Dear Students, On behalf of your student government, I am delighted to welcome you to a new quarter at Shoreline Community College! While you are a student here we want you to feel at home. To provide some guidance, we have put together this Survival Guide to help you navigate the next few months both academically and practically. Even with this information, you may still occasionally feel lost and confused. It’s alright, I’ve been there myself. But, if you do find yourself feeling that way, don’t hesitate to ask for help from any one of the number of resources listed in the following pages. Whether you’re a new or returning student, we want you to feel welcome. At Shoreline Community College, you will have the opportunity to challenge yourself, see things from new perspectives, establish lifelong friendships, and develop valuable skills that will serve you for years to come. We hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities you will encounter while at Shoreline, and if there is anything we can do to assist you, please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Did you know?

Because dolphins are mammals, they need to come to the surface of the water to breathe. Unlike land mammals that breathe and eat through their mouths, dolphins have separate holes for each task. Dolphins eat through their mouths and breathe through their blowholes.

This prevents the dolphin from sucking up water into the lungs when hunting, reducing the risk of drowning.

United Club Council Shoreline has dozens of amazing clubs that host engaging activities and events for students.

Our clubs focus on a variety of topics including hobbies, cultures/identities, and career paths. Joining a club is a great way to get involved, meet new people, and gain leadership experience! The Drowsy Chaperone

Know what you are paying for...

The Student Services and Activities Fee: The S&A fee is folded into your tuition and is the primary source of funding for many programs and all clubs on campus.

The S&A fee helps pay for programs like Student Government, the Arts & Entertainment Board, Tutoring, Learning Centers, the Multicultural Center, Athletics, Theater, the Parent Child Center, the Ebbtide newspaper and more!

STUDENT FEES

Sustainability and Commuter Options Fee: The SCOF fee was created and approved through a student body vote in 2009. The fee covers transportation costs (such as the shuttle and subsidizing bus passes) and is used to pay for sustainability projects on campus like the water bottle refilling stations, $34 per quarter.

The Pagoda Union Building Fee: The PUB collects funds to continue making mortgage fees for the PUB building, $4.40 per credit. At a maximum of $52.80.

The Student Technology Fee: The tech fee helps pay for technology on-campus including computer labs, campus wi-fi, the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lynda.com subscription, etc, $4.40 per credit. At a max of $44.00.

Visual Arts Advising Transfer, Art and Visual Communications Technology (VCT) advising faculty will be available for drop-in advising on degrees and certificates in preparation for Winter Quarter registration. All campus students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to come and ask questions about courses and pathways in the Visual Arts, as well as the common resources across campus. There is no formal presentation faculty will be available for one-on-one or small group information.

International Peer Mentors

International Peer Mentors (IPMs) are student workers in the International Education department. Their mission is to support new and continuing international students to achieve cross-cultural experiences and academic success at Shoreline Community College. They hold several events per quarter, which are open to ALL Shoreline students! Some examples of events are the Halloween Party, Global Showcase, Graduation BBQ, and volunteer opportunities.

Honors College at SCC

The Honors College is an opportunity to work in an academically challenging program with similarly motivated and engaged peers, in smaller classes, with an option to pursue an individual research project, and official recognition of your additional achievement. We encourage military connected, veteran and dependent students to visit the Veterans Resource Center (VRC). Learn more about our GOT YOUR 6 initiative and experience all that the VRC has to offer. The VRC, located in FOSS 5225A, is a highly successful gathering place where students collaborate academically, mentor and support one another. Share information and resources, socialize and decompress as they take on the challenges of adjusting from military life to student life.
