LETTER ‌ith the increase of exposure to home décor ideas all over social media and online, the minds of consumers have now been set wide open, and tradition is just one of many options to consider when decorating for the holidays. Christmas doesn’t have to look red and green all the time. Golds, silvers and blues, for example, can take the place of the conventional holiday hues and still evoke a warm, Christmasy feel. In this issue, two people mastered the non-traditional, modern look for the holiday. The first is Adam Wiltfang, owner of Designer Desserts and the featured home on page 30. Last year a colleague told me about how impressive Adam’s house is, especially at Christmastime. Another colleague, Carey Keenan-Rowell, who founded the Hunt & Gather market, told me, “Adam is the most creative person I know. And I know a lot of creative people.” Anyone who has visited Adam’s Valpo bakery will find this estimation easy to believe, and the photos of his home will offer even further proof. It is a sight to behold. The second person we collaborated with is Michelle Nikitaras from Unveiled Weddings & Events. She pitched the idea of “A Modern Merry Christmas,” using the colors black, white, copper and teal. Those colors are not what I would have first thought for a Christmas photo shoot, but Michelle’s magic made it come together beautifully. Check it out on page 48. We do have a bit of the traditional in this issue, including one of my favorite stories we’ve ever published, on Merle and Suzanne Miller, or “the official Santaand-wife of LaPorte,” as writer Julie Dean Kessler dubs them. They play the famous Claus couple for multiple local organizations, but that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their many activities and accomplishments. Turn to page 42 for the must-read story about this fascinatingly quirky couple. As you prepare for the holiday season, I hope you’ll do so with an open mind for new possibilities along with a soft grasp on the traditions that warm your heart. This season is, by nature, a reflection of the past mixed with anticipation for the future, and that’s what makes it the most wonderful time of the year. Have a happy holiday season and a blessed New Year.

Stocking SURPRISES

The holidays are just weeks away, and now is the time to make sure stockings are stuffed. While candy is a popular addition to any stocking, there are many unique items that will make your loved one’s stocking the best part of Christmas morning. ■ Whether you enjoy shopping local or online, here are a few ideas for the Santa in you this year. For Moms and Dads

Chapstick is a must during the winter season, but finding a place where you can easily grab it when in a dry lip jam can be challenging. Jamie Bruinsma, owner of After8handmade, has designed the perfect solution. “My chapstick holder keychains are so popular,” she says. “I’ve sold over 4,700 of them and still going strong.” Her accessories store, located in downtown Crown Point, is full of stocking stuffer possibilities, from the fun to the practical, including quarter carriers for those trips to Aldi and the 25-cent cart rack.

MAIN PHOTO BY JESSICA DEKOCK, ALL OTHER PHOTOS PROVIDED

■ Coffee is never a bad thing for moms and dads, and Sip Coffee House and Artisan Cafe, with locations in Highland and Crown Point, is one of several local coffee and tea houses that offer a line of gifts that last for several cups of a hot beverage.“We have things like gift cards and a variety of loose leaf teas that are available to buy per ounce to make at home,” owner Rhonda Bloch says. “Some classics are chai, sencha green and Earl Grey, and some unique flavors are hot mama, blood orange, mojito, blueberry, lemon meringue and many more.”

■ If the mom in your family loses her keys often at the bottom of her purse, the Finders Key Purse might be the right solution. This accessory (isntthisclever.com) keeps keys at the top of the purse—serving as both a safety device for easy access and a convenient solution to lost keys. ■ If safety is a top priority, try the Tiger Lady (tigerlady.com), a protection device that is modeled after a cat’s claws and captures valuable DNA if a person needs to use it. ■ For moms and dads who suffer from headaches, the Headache Eraser (squareup.com/store/givingsoaps) is a compact and easy stocking stuffer. Made of avocado oil and essential oils, this roller helps alleviate any pain suffered by a headache.

For Kids

■ As kids, we enjoyed retro viewers that made pictures seem just an arm’s length away. Now a company is bringing this popular toy back with a twist. Retro Viewer (image3d.com) allows customers to upload their own pictures and turn them into 3D magic.

■ For the gamer in the family, a customizable video game ornament from the Ornament Shop (ornamentshop.com) is the perfect fun addition. Gamers also will like SkinIt (skinit.com), which allows customization of electronics to fit someone’s favorite team or style, whether it’s the Chicago Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs or White Sox.

Teens will love a key2Bme (key2bme.com), fun gifts that clip to a key chain or bag that remind them they hold the key to their happiness. This line features things teens love, from dance to cheer and sports, as well as encouraging notes such as “be happy,” “hope,” and “change the world.”

For Pets

■ Don’t forget your favorite four-legged family members this Christmas. Mary Schaut, owner of Fuzzy Butz Pet Bakery in St. Joseph, Michigan, says special dog treats make the perfect gift. Each year, the store carries a line of Christmas treats, switching all of its baked items, from the decorating to the packaging, over to be holiday-themed. Candy canes, snowflakes and Santa treats fly off the shelves, as do several other unique items the store offers including pet stockings themselves. “We’re a full-lined pet store, so we have collars, toys, Christmas clothing for dogs and other gifts as well,” Schaut says.

Lose the Stress, Keep the Joy Why Pulling Off a Holiday Meal Doesn’t Have to Be a Drag

‌D

on’t let the stress of planning and presenting your holiday meal turn you into a grinch. With a little forethought and some help from your friends at your local Jewel-Osco, you can pull off a holiday feast that won’t rob you of your holiday joy.

No Time? No Problem!

Who has time to pull off a holiday meal these days? You do, if you utilize savvy time-saving shortcuts and let Jewel-Osco do the hard work for you. “A fabulous holiday meal does not have to take hours,” says Samantha Woulfe, Jewel-Osco community dietitian. “With a little planning, you can have a holiday feast at your table in no time.” Luckily for you, and for the sake of your precious oven space, the Jewel-Osco Deli has pre-cooked turkeys available; all you have to do to take advantage of this winning arrangement is place your order ahead of time, and the deli will have your main dish ready for you when you need it. What if turkey’s not your thing, or perhaps a full-size turkey is simply too much of a good thing for your small party? No worries, Jewel-Osco’s meat department and butcher block has plenty of savory alternative options that will save time without sacrificing quality. “To cut cooking time, instead of roasting a full turkey, you can roast a smaller bird such as chicken, Cornish hen, or duck,” Woulfe says. “You can even buy a turkey breast or tenderloin, which will cut down cooking time. You can also try for a quicker cooking protein such as pork or fish.” She adds that you can pick up a roast chicken from the deli for your main course. “Serve the chicken on a nice platter surrounded by roasted vegetables, and no one will notice that it didn’t take you hours to prepare.”

spend their time with friends and family rather than being stuck in the kitchen. Woulfe points out that the Jewel-Osco Deli has a variety of fresh salads to choose from, including lighter options with salads that aren’t mayonnaise-based.

Fresh and Easy Meal Accompaniments

Don’t forget to check out Jewel-Osco’s produce section for fresh, hassle-free holiday meal accompaniments. “Each of our stores cuts fresh fruit and vegetables daily,” Woulfe says. “They’re ready to go and are a huge time-saver. You can serve cut-up fruit as a simple side dish or an after-dinner dessert.” Woulfe also recommends roasting seasonal vegetables such as butternut squash, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and green beans to bring out their natural sweetness. The Jewel-Osco Deli is another fresh stop for those short on time or for those who’d prefer to

Don’t Forget the Baked Goods and to Beautify the Table

No holiday meal would be complete without comforting carbs, and The Bake Shop at Jewel bakes fresh bread and desserts daily. When it comes to easy but pleasing baked goods, stick with trusty traditional favorites such as the requisite crusty loaf of freshly baked bread. And, it’s a holiday cliché for good reason: The Bake Shop has your guaranteed crowd-pleasing pumpkin pie ready to go. To complete your table, Woulfe says, “Stop at the Jewel-Osco floral department for a beautiful centerpiece. Your guests will be impressed at the beautiful holiday celebration you created with the help of your local Jewel-Osco.”

Get your holiday party started with festive appetizers

A

s we’re right in the midst of the holiday season, it’s time to think of celebrations of all types. One of the best parts of a holiday party is often the food we share with others before the big meal. Those appetizers and hors d’oeuvres that grace the table can sometimes be the main hit of the celebration. Food experts say when creating party apps, hosts may experiment with various flavors in assorted recipes, prepare food items with themes or simply create whimsical, fun hors d’oeuvres that are easy to eat. “Appetizers are fun to share,” says Andrew Easterday, chef owner of Little Italy in Dyer. Easterday says when people get together for a party, you’ll often find they “gather around the food.” So, having appealing hors d’oeuvres is ideal. Easterday says one of the recipes he enjoys as an appetizer is what he calls Eat Your Veggies. It’s a roasted vegetable dish that features Brussels sprouts, Parmesan cheese, bacon, onion, cauliflower and more. “This time of year lends itself to rich comfort foods and roasted flavors,” he says. Easterday also suggests a sweet corn appetizer which can be roasted in the oven, sprinkled with cayenne pepper or other

PERFECT PAIRINGS Wondering what beverage best accompanies your favorite cookie? Hot Cider with Snickerdoodles The hint of cinnamon in a snickerdoodle makes it a perfect match for a mug of hot cider. Hot Cocoa with Chocolate Mint Cookies You can never have enough chocolate and this double chocolate combo is a sugary taste of heaven. Milkshake with Light Wafer Cookies No matter your shake flavor, a vanilla wafer or creme-filled wafer cookie gives a nice little bit of crunch to the frosty beverage.

‌C

athy Jacobsen of Dyer knows a thing or two about cookies. She’s been baking since she was a little girl and after operating storefronts of her business, Cookielicious, in Dyer and Schererville, she’s rolled out more dough than she could ever count. The business has evolved and the stores are no more, but the focus is now on a cookie and ice cream truck, I’scream & Cookies. From markets to weddings to private events, the mobile ice cream sandwich parlor serves up goodies to hungry sweet-toothed patrons. Jacobsen offers up a few of her favorites, minus her perfect chocolate chip recipe that she says is top secret. For the holidays, when cookie making is happening all over the Region, Jacobsen says that using a base recipe, like her shortbread one, is a great start. You can then customize to suit your taste with combinations like cranberries and walnuts, chocolate and mint pieces or orange zest with cranberries. “It’s a great base cookie and there are no eggs, so it’s really easy to put together,” Jacobsen says. One cookie that she says was popular in her shop was a lavender almond shortbread cookie that used culinary grade lavender buds that she ordered online along with almond extract. There are few rules in cookie making and the possibilities are endless. ■ CARRIE STEINWEG

cup (2 sticks) butter cup powdered sugar ounces honey teaspoon almond extract teaspoon vanilla cups flour teaspoon baking powder teaspoon salt

Directions Cream butter, flavors, honey and sugar till light and fluffy for 5 minutes. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder, then add to creamed mixture. Roll out and cut into your favorite shape. (Use powdered sugar to cover your rolling surface.) Bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes. Variations: Add finely chopped nuts or dried fruits, or you can substitute the almond extract with any of your favorite flavors: orange, lemon, anise.

1 cup (2 sticks) butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 1-1/2 cups peanut butter 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-1/2 cups pastry flour 2-1/2 cups oats 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup chocolate chips 1/2 cup mini M&Ms

Directions Cream butter, peanut butter and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, oats, salt, and soda; add to creamed mixture. Add chips. Mix in M&Ms slowly to avoid breaking. Scoop with tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

Milk with Chocolate Chip Cookies There’s nothing better than a warm chocolate chip cookie dipped in a glass of cold milk. No further explanation needed. Coffee with Triple Chocolate Espresso Cookie Jacobsen’s Triple Chocolate Espresso Cookie offers a great burst of coffee flavor that shouldn’t be tempered, but celebrated with a toasty mug of coffee or a latte. Orange Juice or Orange Julius with Cranberry Walnut Shortbread Cranberries and orange are an undeniably groovy combo and if you don’t have that hint of citrus in your cookie, get it in a glass to go with it. Chocolate Milk with Peanut Butter Cookies Mr. Reese was one smart cookie putting the two flavors together in a candy cup. They go together just as nicely when you take a basic peanut butter cookie and wash it down with a cup of chocolate milk. Egg Nog with Monster Cookies The monster cookie is pretty much an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kind of dessert and if you’ve already gone overboard with this decadent cookie, why not go all in with a rich glass of egg nog? Tea with Classic Sugar Cookies A classic frosted sugar cookie is often accompanied by milk, yet a warm teacup of ginger peach, pomegranate or red rooibos introduces a soothing bit of fruitiness that will make you feel as cozy as a big fleece blanket. Ginger Beer or Ginger Ale with Lemon Cookies The spicy zing and carbonation of a ginger beer or ginger ale nicely complement the tartness of a lemon cookie or lemon bar.

VIGORATE

Healthy Mind, Happy Holiday

T

he holiday season, in all of its tinsel-shiny goodness, is for some a time of stress or working through memories still painful to remember. This holiday season, embrace it the right way and make sure you’re strong and healthy mentally. This begins with a degree of self care. Making sure you’re in order as an individual is important; caring for yourself allows you to care for others. Here are some ways you can implement self care:

1. Exercise The physical is correlated with the metaphysical, which means your body’s health is essential to your mind’s health. Self.com suggests low intensity strength training three times a week, and cardiovascular exercise twice a week. The gift that keeps on giving is an investment in a healthy body, because it means that there’s a good chance you’ll be around for more holidays to come. 2. Make a List Making lists might just be one of the most essential practices for someone ready to make headway into the holiday season. While your child may love making lists of what he or she would like to see under the tree, make one for yourself identifying what you need to get done. Renae Vania-Tomczak, president of Mental Health America of Lake County, suggests writing down your priorities in the holiday season, then sorting out the needs from the wants. Choose the things your time is best spent doing. 3. Celebrate Tradition

Renae also recommends celebrating

old and new traditions, especially those that help you and your family remember a loved one. For some, the holidays might be painful following the death of a family member or friend. “The way to overcome the loss of a loved one is to celebrate the memory of that person,” Renae says. “Going to their favorite restaurant, watching a movie they loved or telling stories about that person help in doing that.” Perhaps you want to start this holiday with a new tradition. Tired of the same old food every year? Try a meal from a different food genre every year, like German food or BBQ. Maybe a movie the whole family fell in love with this year is the one you could watch on Christmas Eve from here on out.

4. Give Generously Shed the expectation of getting for a giving mentality, because it’s a highway to some mental health fireworks. Nothing is better for the family than to enjoy the benefits of everyone sacrificing for one another, and the holiday season is the perfect on-ramp to a lifestyle tinted with self-sacrifice. The gifts you could give number far more than what you could get at Target. Consider this season finding a charity to give to, or an organization to volunteer for. Spending time with those who don’t have a family, money or friends to celebrate with will speak volumes. 5. Love Others The holiday life is best lived with others, so enjoy meals, gift giving and putting up the shiniest Christmas tree in town with the people who mean most to you. A mentally healthy individual is the best equipped to love others, and that’s what the holiday season is about, isn’t it? ■ MATT SCHEFFER

hopping. Eating. Decorating. Eating. Visiting. Eating. Exercising? Who has the time? For all of the joy and goodwill it engenders, the holiday season has a certain unfortunate and seemingly inevitable pattern to it. As activities and obligations pile up, personal fitness routines tend to fade or disappear altogether—and at a most inopportune time, considering the parade of indulgences that traditionally greet the final few weeks of the year. But just because you can’t find time to get to the gym in December doesn’t mean you have to abandon your commitment to wellness. You just have to get creative, possibly by tucking some simple, effective exercises into your bustling holiday schedule. Elizabeth Downs, the healthy living director at LaPorte County Family YMCA, says there are a number of great little ways to stay active and healthy even when the calendar and the buffet table are conspiring against you. “All of these exercises are multifunctional and use multiple muscle groups to get the most out of a short workout,” she explains. “I like to see people build up to two or three sets of these exercises to challenge the muscle groups a little more when only a minimum amount of time is available.” Varya Burden, a fitness instructor at 901 Michigan Ave the LaPorte YMCA, demonstrates the LaPorte following exercises. 219.325.9622

CREATIVITY FILLS EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY OF THIS VALPARAISO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

1 1. A Christmas tree takes center stage, perfectly centered in front of the tallest picture window in the Valparaiso home of Adam Wiltfang and Heath Timm. On the tree, delicate, spiked gold stars, 600 feet of thin wire with lights, and dramatic silver disco balls are a match for the wall of windows under the vaulted ceiling. Even in winter, ribbons of light through custom plantation shades brighten comfy sofa and chairs.

2. Stockings in various styles for each dog, cat, and owners hang in a colorful row at the fireplace. 3. Air plants, succulents, and Edison bulbs hang from chains on a living room wall. 4. Presents are wrapped with care, simple but elegant, and incorporating some of the gold in the Christmas décor.

‌ll set to relocate from their downtown Valparaiso house, Adam Wiltfang and husband Heath Timm agreed they wanted to build and weren’t looking for a subdivision. Their five dogs played a part in changing their minds on both issues, and they couldn’t be happier about it. “We wanted a larger home for our pets, and with more country space for ourselves,” says Wiltfang, a business owner; Timm is a purchaser for Lakeshore Bone and Joint in Valparaiso. But they soon realized that waiting for a house to be built after selling their downtown home could be challenging, especially with the dogs, so “we looked and looked for the right house,” Wiltfang says. They found it, in a subdivision. It’s a corner lot on one-and-a-half acres in Valparaiso’s countryside, with green vistas beyond their property. The couple and their pets—three French bulldogs, a St. Bernard, a boxer, and two cats—moved into the newly built home in November 2015. “This house was mostly done when we moved in,” says Wiltfang, but his and Timm’s creative ways are still transforming the 3,300-squarefoot house into a place with an intriguing and unique vibe. Wiltfang explains that a love of mixing modern and mid-century décor informs their design choices, in a few surprising ways.

The color palette for the downstairs combines dark blue for walls and gray ceilings for living room and dining room, where windows and lighting make the whole pleasantly bright. Wiltfang, who has a passion for Edison lights, chose for one living room wall three Edison bulbs and a number of cacti and air plants hung at different lengths, suspended from black chains secured from a sturdy curtain rod, with cork tiles to set off the vignette. Cacti and succulents are here and there throughout the house, breathing nature’s freshness into nearly every room. The question of how to treat the stepped windows at living room’s end was answered with plantation blinds, with extrawide louvers. The blinds’ widths match the narrow side windows and wider central ones; top and bottom controls allow opening the top third for light while closing the lower two-thirds for privacy. On a ledge and flanking the lower windows, the initials “A” and “H” are in LED lighting made to look like neon. 5 At Christmas, a fir tree goes in the middle, adorned with old and new glass ornaments and 600 feet of lightweight wire— 5. The dining area is accented half copper, half silver—dotted with a blue background for the with very tiny lights. Wiltfang vintage metal “eat” sign; birchexpresses the exuberance of the wrapped candles provide a soft holiday: “I love it! I love giving holiday glow for the concretepeople presents, figuring out just topped table. 6. In the kitchen, what they would like.” Elegant open cabinets and black granite countertops contrast with wrappings feature clean lines, white molding and cabinets, gold touches and unusual tags while a rustic board supporting inscribed with warm sentiments. the light fixture adds texture. With a bit of greenery here and there in the house, the holiday colors are silver and gold, including silver globes from small to large on vintage crates. Wiltfang’s brother helped with some carpentry, including the living room fireplace mantel of cherry wood topped with white marble. These days it’s glowing with silvery branches softened by “snow” and thin golden starbursts. Christmas stockings hang here—one for each pet and identified with a charm or initial, plus two more stockings for their owners. To add interest to space created by a vaulted ceiling with flat center, the choice is a light fixture with large, round, white globes at different heights. A rustic, rectangular board here and for the light fixtures in the kitchen and dining room adds texture and support. Sitting in the dining area and gazing about offers much to see. Despite the sentimental references to the past, most of it is not your grandma’s décor. Wiltfang does have his mom’s collection of 300 cookbooks, some dating back 100 years, part of it displayed here in an oval baker’s rack. But he repurposed a quirky one, The Geometry

of Pasta, for the narrower spaces around the doorway between dining room and kitchen. Wiltfang used its individual pages—blackand-white illustrations and words in varying fonts and point sizes—as wallpaper, which he finished with decoupage. The dining table top is smooth concrete, paired with a wooden bench with a simple, one-plank back, an industrial-meets-rustic combo. On the table, a 1907 chemistry book and varying shapes and sizes of beakers and jars show Wiltfang’s love for the forms and complexity of science. At the holidays, it’s a softer look, with a bit of greenery and candles wrapped in birch bark, but the Edison lights overhead stay, affirming a how’s-it-made curiosity. Birchwood fills a crate and a tall branch sparkles with miniature lights. On the same wall near the opposite corner, small, antique kitchen items—tiny flour sifter, molds, and more—sit in the lower curves of an old metal sign that reads “eat,” its neon lights removed. A big statement piece is the 7-foot-by-4-foot metal-framed mirror. The kitchen was already outfitted with can lighting, black granite tops on counters and island, and polished gray wall tiles. “I was not wild about the black at first,” says Wiltfang, but he now sees it as a bold, 7. The ledge Adam Wiltfang and his brother crafted adds interest to the area above the stove; the glass-covered lights lend holiday cheer. 8. Behind an unusual oval baking rack in the dining room, “wallpaper” inspired by a quirky cookbook is the actual pages Wiltfang cut out, affixed individually to the wall, then decoupaged. The couple loves the wildly creative concept, but with a wry smile Wiltfang says “never again” to the task of decoupaging.

centering accent. Two cabinets with dishes on either side of the stove are without doors, the insides painted the same dark blue as the other rooms’ walls; the accent helps tie together the overall décor. Over the stove, the ledge of reclaimed barn wood with fire retardant sealer added was also fashioned by Wiltfang and his brother. At Christmastime it displays bell jars holding ornaments and lights. The island has a simple, cheery arrangement of silvery pine cones and snowcapped cupcakes, a nod to Wiltfang’s Designer Desserts in Valparaiso, where delectables from cupcakes to wedding cakes are artfully elegant. The kitchen’s wall-mounted chalkboards provide note space; a nearby collection of cutting boards evokes nostalgia. Maple flooring downstairs adds a light touch. Off the kitchen are a bath and 9 down the hall, a library, which the couple also calls “an oddities room” that includes dentist molds, a stuffed owl head, and more. The plan is to turn this room into an office, but meanwhile another Christmas tree brightens the space. Wiltfang and Timm chose the foyer to build two bookcases; between them is a large metal circle sectioned into squares by wires and holding small accent pieces. The foyer gets a rustic sparkle with a wood crate with star, lighted tree branch, and crate with greenery. The couple likes the floor plan that has bedrooms and other living areas upstairs. “That way our guests can wander freely downstairs, have plenty of room to mingle, and nothing has to be closed off,” Wiltfang says. To keep the dogs from weaving amongst guests’ legs, two gates—actually heavy-duty fireplace screens— block the stairway. The couple also had the entire property enclosed with wrought-iron fencing for the dogs’ outdoor play. Up top at the stairway are Edison lights and Bird Machine art, but Wiltfang plans to fill the entire facing stairway wall with photos. “That will take a lot of planning so it looks right,” and he takes a moment to muse the possibilities. 10 Of the four upstairs bedrooms, one is reserved for the dogs when company comes, except for one black French bulldog who quietly follows Wiltfang everywhere. Indeed, all the dogs are quiet during this visit, though Wiltfang says the white bulldog has plenty to say at times. Across the hall is another bedroom and bath; at the other end, a guest ensuite. All have walk-in closets. The hallway, like the rest of the house, features angled walls, which the couple loves. Here, two short, angled hallways lead to the master bedroom. More projects await here: Could be that two walls will be wallpapered in a subtle gray pattern with gold squares. Just past the

here is nothing quite so comforting, healing, and inviting as the smells of happy memories, of holidays past and present, and of the anticipation of a change of season. They say you can never go home again, but the vintage-inspired candles of Antique Candle Works come close, as with its top-selling Christmas Day candle, which Antique Candle Works founder and owner, Brittany Whitenack, raves, “is exactly what Christmas smells like.” Christmas Day, along with its sweet-smelling mason jar counterparts such as Autumn Leaves and Back Roads, has its roots in what began as a hobby for Whitenack, who graduated from Purdue in 2012 with a degree in management. After a year as a manager for Target, which she credits for teaching her the value of branding and perception, she realized the job wasn’t a great fit for her and that it didn’t leave her with much personal time. In search of a fulfilling hobby, she decided to start making candles. “I started out by making a few batches and tweaking how I made them, experimenting with fragrances in figuring out how to make them smell better,” she recalls. Whitenack gave her homemade candles to family and friends as Christmas gifts but saw potential beyond hobby fulfillment in a market for candles that had a farmhouse and vintage appeal. Antique Candle Works was launched in January 2014, and today its candles are sold in more than 60 retail stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, at select artisan pop-up markets antiquecandleworks.com such as Hunt and Gather and Fetching Market, as well as in a few online stores including its own website. In a market saturated with mass-produced candles, Whitenack says the appeal of Antique Candle Works lies in the simplicity, purity, and quality of its mason jar and antique candles. “Our candles are made from 100 percent soy wax in raw form, which is melted down and hand-poured by a small team including myself,” she says. “We use fine fragrance oils that are phthalate-free, the candle wicks have a cotton core

Merle and Suzanne Miller play Santa and Mrs. Claus for various organizations throughout LaPorte County. (next page) One-year-old Charlie Carson of LaPorte gets some Santa time at McClure Christmas Tree Farm.

THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE ADVENTURES OF LAPORTE’S SANTA AND MRS. CLAUS f‌ you should see a certain Mr. and Mrs. Claus and wonder for a zany moment if the red-clad fellow and his sweet-looking wife just might be the real thing, you’re probably seeing Merle and Suzanne Miller. They’re the official Santa-andwife of LaPorte, where late November finds them waving to the crowd in the town’s Santa Parade. But they’re anything but typical. True, Merle’s eyes are blue and merry, and his beard is real. He says many children are less nervous with his Santa because the beard looks natural. “A big, fake beard, they can only see the eyes, and it can look strange to them,” he says. Clearly past retirement age, the Millers tell their ages but demur at publicizing it, “Because Santa Claus is a forever person,” says Merle. For all the fun this Mr. and Mrs. Claus have in their roles, they take it seriously, and Merle is eager to share a bit of history. You’d do well to pay close attention, or you might miss the funny-bone throwaway lines neither can resist. “A lot of people think Santa is irreligious, but Santa Claus began with St. Nicholas, who was bishop of Myra,” Merle says. “The original St. Nicholas was a good man; he had a beard like mine.” St. Nicholas was a 325 CE contemporary of the Roman emperor Constantine. “I knew Constantine,” says Merle. “He was a good friend.” There are enough miracles ascribed to St. Nicholas that some may

be apocryphal. “I don’t know if they all happened,” says Merle. “I wasn’t there.” A few examples: He calmed the seas in response to sailors’ pleas to save their lives during a storm. He saved little boys who were going to be slaughtered for meat by a butcher. A man asked for help marrying off his three daughters who had no dowries, in a time when it was essential. The girls hung their stockings to dry as usual, but Christmas morning there was a gold coin in each of them, and that’s how the tradition of hanging stockings started. It’s true that Nicholas’s father was wealthy and that Nicholas gave to those in need—possibly how Santa bringing presents started. “The Dutch in America pronounced it ‘Sant Nick-OH-las,’ which became Santa Claus,” Merle explains. The Millers are devoted to their roles, working in tandem to make kids wide-eyed with wonder. Suzanne quietly asks parents for their child’s name and a couple of details. Then she slips over to Merle and whispers the info to him. “That way, instead of asking their names, I say, ‘Oh, you’re Sarah! And you’re doing well in school, aren’t you?’” Suzanne chuckles, “Their jaw just drops.” This conversation takes place in their kitchen, which is in the former Washington Elementary School in LaPorte. Yes—the entire school is their home. They bought the 13,312-square-foot school in 1994 and faced a daunting renovation. The school had closed in 1980, two churches had

owned it, and then it stood empty for five years. The roof was falling in. Vandalism had claimed windows and doors. Pipes had frozen. “We did almost all the work ourselves, but had to have help with the roof,” Merle says. The first week, he moved all his tools and equipment there to begin the restoration—and someone broke in and stole it all. “I had to start over.” They kept as much of the original features as they could. In the kitchen, Suzanne and their daughter kept the frames from the broken cupboard, replaced the centers, and reinstalled them with the original knobs. Outside, “We planted all the trees here, so it’s like a park,” says Merle, and after a pause, “How did we do all that?” “All that” included renovating every room in the building except one, a storage room. “We just do fun stuff now,” he says, although mowing the 2-acre property takes six hours. Fun stuff is one of the reasons for purchasing the place. The Millers entertain as Mr. and Mrs. Claus and with performances at their Washington Stage Theatre, where each season is two to seven performances of plays, musicals, and poetry. Only original plays from new writers are accepted. “We’ve produced plays from nineteen new playwrights who wouldn’t have gotten a chance elsewhere,” Merle says. Merle writes humorous poetry and won second place in the most recent poetry slam at Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City. He’s written a book of poetry that includes members of a former poetry group. Between them, the couple has written six small books. When he was in the Army in Vietnam, Suzanne was there as a reporter. “I finally wrote about it,” Suzanne says, in a book called Undercover in Vietnam—the culture, the danger, the orphanages. She declares, “It’s a million seller,” waits a beat, then adds, “I have a million of ’em in the cellar!” If variety is the spice of life, this couple is one hot habañero. Merle performed a trampoline show during halftime for a 1963 Army-Navy football game. He’s on the cover of a 1971 copy of Popular Mechanics, flying his homemade Teenie plane. They appear as historical figures and he demonstrates making metal figures with some of his 500 molds. They’ve performed at Northwest Indiana theaters small and large, including the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. They helped build sets for movie director John Hancock’s locally filmed Prancer and his most recent, The Looking Glass. They’re in their 53rd year as members of Michiana Clowns. Merle claims, “We can’t be really good at anything because we do so many things.” Awestruck kids at Christmas and audiences at Washington School Theatre wouldn’t agree. The shows at the old school building are fast-moving and fun, eliciting lots of laughter and applause. Then there’s the 35-year run of the Dr. Quackenbush & the Magic, Music and Medicine Show, with their daughter and two sons as sidekicks and musicians. It paid for their college educations; each is now a mechanical engineer. There are six grandkids and another on the way. In the early 1990s Merle, Suzanne, and the kids took their entertainment to St. Petersburg, Russia. There were street performances for delighted passersby. A nightclub gig amazed them: the Russian locals knew every word of “She’ll Be Comin’ ’Round the Mountain,” singing and clapping. It was in stark

contrast to the general atmosphere. Merle shakes his head. “The buildings were gray, everything was gray. There were no street signs, no business signs. People didn’t seem to smile—but on that day they laughed,” and a look of quiet pride passes between this couple. Married in 1960, they still take off in their 10-foot camper for extended jaunts. Merle asks, “After living in a place that’s 13,312 square feet, how do we manage to live in a 70-square-foot camper?” The question is rhetorical, but his gaze shifts to Suzanne. They smile. The cadence of their conversations, spoken and implied, is the seamless stuff of five-plus decades of marriage. Merle declares, “Fifty-six years, a heckuva good average.” Suzanne gives a decisive nod. Now it’s the season of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The kids’ responses can provoke suppressed laughter and tears. One little boy’s wish: “Give my mom a bedtime toy.” In some places, Merle says, “Kids are dressed to the nines and wanting all sorts of expensive toys. Then we’ll go to a small town, with kids in used clothing, and they’ll ask for a toy for a brother or sister.” Suzanne remembers a child who asked for a shoe. One shoe. Merle asked why, and the boy told him one of his shoes had a hole in it. Suzanne shakes her head. “We wanted to help, we tried to find out his

name, but we never were able to. It still bothers me.” But they collect toys throughout the year. Mr. Claus gave one little fellow a stuffed monkey. “That kid’s eyes got wide and he told us, ‘My mom calls me her monkey!’” Merle says. He and Suzanne are quiet for a moment, pondering the magic that surpasses anything they’ve performed onstage. He notes the name Santa Claus doesn’t appear in Clement Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” commonly known as “’Twas the Night before Christmas.” Merle recites the tale by heart, pausing to explain to children the history behind some of the verses. On this day he can’t resist a question: “How many reindeer hooves are on the roof?” Eight reindeer, so multiplication yields 32. “No!” Merle exclaims delightedly. “They have split hooves, two per foot, so the answer is 64!” The next morning the couple, as Mr. and Mrs. Claus, traipse over dewy grass to a stand of fir trees for a photo shoot. The photographer calls Suzanne by name, but the gentle response is, “No, it’s Mrs. Claus now.” Jingle bells chime with each step as Mr. Claus, a sack over his shoulder, puts an arm around his wife, who looks picture-perfect in her long, red velvet robe and ruffled cap. They pose, and once again there’s just a moment when you wonder.

‌ opper is the new gold and it is everywhere! This shiny metal is the perfect detail for C any holiday set-up. Try it when decorating for your next holiday party, and your guests will be praising your attention to detail for the whole year to come. ■ We chose this beautiful metal to complement the modern granite and wooden details of the loft space. Along with our teal accent color, the copper touches really dazzled up the black, gray, brown and white of the loft. It was the perfect glow for a joyous holiday table that departed from the more traditional colors of red and green, in a more modern space.

Tasty Olive Company

2014 45th St Highland 219.924.7881 tastyolivecompany.com

Tasty Olive Company is now in its fourth year of business and has established a good customer base of not just foodies, but those seeking a healthier lifestyle or making necessary dietary alterations due to health issues. “In our store, we have over twenty olive oils and over twenty balsamics that are all high quality and all natural,” says owner Lynn Gandolfi. The balsamics come from Modena, Italy, and are all natural with no sugars or preservatives. The pure olive oils come from all over the world, with olives that are pressed at their peak. Among the products available are oils that are infused with such flavors as garlic, mushroom and sage. “One of our biggest sellers is an organic Persian lime that is great for cooking, for salads or as a finishing oil,” Gandolfi says. Customers have the opportunity to taste and pair oils before purchasing and periodically the store hosts tasting events featuring easy recipes. Pre-made or customized baskets make for perfect holiday gifts for a hostess or the foodie in your life. You can get everything from a small sampler pack to large baskets combined with other gourmet products— pastas, spices, crackers, jellies and more. ■ CARRIE STEINWEG

The iconic Star Plaza Theatre has been the hub of big name entertainment in the Region for decades. It was announced earlier this year that the theater would be closed, but after an overwhelming response from the community, the owners elected to keep it open. There is only one act that has been performing there each year since its opening in 1979—the country and gospel musical group, Oak Ridge Boys. The Oak Ridge

Boys Christmas Celebration has become a tradition at the theater, where the quartet sings holiday classics along with some of their most popular hits. Their biggest hit, “Elvira,” was a huge pop crossover in 1981. The Oak Ridge Boys also celebrates 40 years together this year. Except for a short hiatus by William Lee Golden, he along with Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall and Richard Sterban have been singing together since 1973. The Oak Ridge Boys originated in Knoxville, Tennessee, as a strictly gospel group in the 1940s, but moved to recording country hits in the 1970s. Tickets for the December 18 show are available at ticketmaster.com or can be purchased in person at the Star Plaza box office.

The Stray Dog Bar & Grill 245 N Whittaker St New Buffalo, Mich. 269.469.2727 thestraydog.com

Situated in downtown New Buffalo, the Stray Dog Bar & Grill is just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan and a very popular dining spot during the busy tourist season. A rooftop bar and dining area for the 21-plus crowd provides a cheery, relaxing atmosphere during the warmer months. The casually hip eatery offers an eclectic mix of starters, sandwiches, pizzas, and salads. Classic burgers are elevated with a number of cheese options, guacamole, bacon, caramelized onions, chipotle mayo and more. Burgers are grass fed, and veggie and turkey burgers are also available. Pizza toppings include premiums such as portobello mushrooms, Kalamata olives,

crumbled blue cheese, black beans and oven-dried tomatoes. If you’re more of a seafood lover, try the sunset shrimp (served with avocado and salsa), the ahi poke, grilled mahi tacos or a grilled grouper sandwich. As the name suggests, the Stray Dog is an animal-loving establishment supporting shelter adoption and, through sales of a specially designed shirt for their “Jack Fund,” donates to animal charities.
