scar & The Majestics were a hard-rocking, soulinfluenced, garage-punk quartet of the 1960s from Gary who recorded most of their tunes at the legendary Chess Recording Studios in Chicago for the USA Records label.

The four original members return to the glory of their youth tonight on the gazebo stage at Highland’s Main Square Park with a 7 p.m. free public concert.

“Rock ‘n’ roll is something that just stays with you,” explained the band’s guitarist, vocalist and namesake Oscar Hamod. “You get older, you move on, you do other things, but the music is always there inside you. It never goes away. It certainly hasn’t for us.”

WCFL and WLS. “We did shows and worked with all the big DJs at the time,” said Hamod.

“Clark Weber, Dick Biondi and Dex Card…they were always really nice to us. We did some of those famous Dex Card’s Wild Goose shows at the Sherwood Club and played all the big holiday dances at the Marquette Pavilion. The kids packed in to see us at those shows.”

The “kids” may have grown older right alongside the former Midwest teen idols, but these teenyboppers turned senior citizens have remained loyal fans and have continued to come out to see the band since they enjoyed a major rebirth in 2011 when the international label Sundazed Records re-issued the original singles as an Oscar & The Majestics anthology titled, “No Chance Baby.” The 14-song collection features the original 12 singles released between 1964 and 1968, plus two groovy fuzz-tone garage rock covers of “House Of The Rising Sun” and The Who’s “I Can’t Explain.”

“We still do a lot of our own music in our shows of course, but today we mix them in with covers from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s by some of our favorite artists,” said Hamod of

Israel’s blues king returns

fter a chance meeting with a homeless man in New York’s Central Park more than 20 years ago, American-born musician Lazer Lloyd walked away from an Atlantic Records contract and a chance to work in the studio with a member of The E-Street Band to follow his muse to the Middle East.

Lloyd spoke with The Times about his amazing career long-distance from his home in Israel while promoting his latest album “Lost on the Highway.”

The U.S. tour kicks off Sunday at The Northwest Indiana Jewish Federation in Munster with a second area date on June 24 at blues club Rosa’s Lounge in Chicago.

Lloyd’s incredible musical journey has resulted in his becoming a catalyst in the creation of a blues scene in his adopted homeland of Israel. “When I first got here there wasn’t much of a blues scene. But the blues has gotten very popular and a lot of big name artists have come here to perform that I have opened for like Snowy White and Ollie Brown,” said Lloyd whose own guitar-drenched song “Blues In Tel Aviv” (from his album “My Own Blues”) underscores the growth of the blues since his arrival.

When one thinks of blues music, places like Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans generally come to mind. Tel Aviv does not. Lloyd agrees, but adds how that is changing with time.

“We consider King David to be the first blues singer,” mused Lloyd. “If you read the Psalms of King David, he’s singing the blues pretty good there. He’s got women problems, his son is trying to kill him, and he’s got all sorts of stuff going on. And today, we have certainly got plenty of blues here in Israel with what’s going on all the time.”

Since relocating to Israel, Lloyd performed with a smattering of very popular Middle Eastern groups, including the famous Jewish psychedelic jam band Reva L’Sheva where he spent seven years as their lead guitarist. Itching to write and perform his own music, Lloyd formed the original rock/blues trio Yood, a commercially successful project that recorded a pair of albums before

Lloyd began performing under his own name after releasing his 2004 solo CD, “Higher Ground.” Lloyd has appeared on various Israeli TV programs over the years while his music has become a staple on Israeli radio playlists.

Lloyd has emerged from the cocoon of the blues he enveloped himself as a teenage loner, and has become a very passionate and spiritual man. Lloyd believes his fate was determined and his career put into motion when at age 14 his folk-singer/blues fan father took the teenage loner to see Stevie Ray Vaughan.

“After seeing Stevie perform that day, there was nothing else I could do but pick up the guitar and play the blues,” Lloyd reflected as he told his story.

After spending an average of 10-12 hours a day practicing guitar, often while listening to his father’s old B.B. King and Albert King records, Lloyd put together his first band, Legacy,” and began playing clubs along the Connecticut shoreline and later expanded his gig turf to include New Jersey and New York.

While he was earning a degree in music from Skidmore College, Lloyd attended a Master Class taught by

B.B. King. “From B.B., I learned it is as important to be a good person as it is to be a good musician.”

Lloyd’s current North American tour includes dates in Canada with members of Canada’s famous Downchild Blues Band, and several dates across America, including two Chicago area concerts with accompaniment from The Chicago Blues Kings, featuring guitarist Will Crosby, keyboardist Tony Cazeau, drummer Kenny Coleman and bassist Felton Crews.

“I sent them the music in advance and we’ll schedule a rehearsal when I get there before the concerts,” said Lloyd.

ven what you think would be elementary slot machine information that casino goers who wish to be informed are entitled to know is extremely difficult to find.

It is unfortunate that casino operators in particular and the gaming industry in general reveal next to nothing about slots and how they work.

For obvious reasons, casinos prefer to keep slots “magical, mystery money machines” rather than make an effort to educate the public about the math and computer programs that govern them.

The hyping of jackpots, publicizing players who are fortunate enough to win them, and reporting monthly payback percentages (broken down by denomination, not machine) as required by state law are all they tell us.

One question that comes up frequently is whether or not the payback percentages on multi-denomination games change depending upon which denomination is being played.

I discovered that every major slot manufacturer has the technology to configure independently both denomination and payback percentage on multi-denomination slot machines.

Whether or not this capability is deployed on every multi-denomination slot in every casino remains the question.

Only the industry’s smaller manufacturers do not support this ability, but you do not find such games in most U.S. markets.

It is true that casino operators at properties around the country set payback percentages at a higher rate on higher denomination games because they do not get the same level of play as lower denomination games.

ohn Cain, executive director of South Shore Arts and curator of its “Baby Boom or Bust!” exhibit, found his inspiration for his show from a personal milestone.

“The exhibit just came from the fact that I’m turning 60 this summer,” he said. “With baby boomers getting to retirement age, I just thought it would be a really fun thing to do.”

There will be a cerebration and reception in honor of the exhibit at South Shore Arts Gallery at Munster’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts Sunday. “Baby Boom or Bust!”’ is made up of more than several hundred pieces of baby boomer memorabilia.

Cain culled these pieces, such as vintage toys, lunch boxes, merchandise bottles and advertisements, from various collectors.

Cain also solicited works by pop artist Brian J. Sullivan. Based in Champaign, Ill., Sullivan is a baby boomer-aged painter, sculptor and photographer whose works have been

and Marilyn Monroe, to name just a few, will augment the ‘50s and ‘60s memorabilia in “Boom.” Sullivan created the works on display in the exhibit, by Cain’s estimation, over the course of the last decade.

Cain first made Sullivan’s acquaintance after the artist took home an award at South Shore Arts’ Salon Show last fall. “(The award was for) a painting of Felix the Cat, and I could tell right away that I would like his material,” Cain said of Sullivan’s work.

While the pieces that make up “Boom” focus primarily on the baby boomer era, Cain sees his show being appealing to exhibit goers of all ages.

“A lot of (baby boomer) shows are still on television, like ‘The Flintstones’ and ‘The Jetsons’ and all those Hanna-Barbera characters, so I think that younger people will have that familiarity,” he said. “It

was a time for an idealistic America and we were making progress with the space age and there was a lot of new technology in design in cars and in homes, and I think the idealism and that innocent age will be felt by a lot of people. It wasn’t for everyone, but it was for a lot of people.”

FANCIFUL MUSICAL ROMANCE

he large-scale stage musical story “Brigadoon” is not a tale theaters often bring to audiences.

Much like the tiny, mysterious village featured as the production’s plot point, “Brigadoon” just doesn’t emerge as one of the obvious and expected shows revisited by theater companies.

It’s one of the reasons audiences are eager for Goodman Theatre’s new production of “Brigadoon,” billed as Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s “big, beautiful and beguiling song and dance fantasy,” to begin preview performances June 27 for a run that spans through Aug. 3.

Chicago director/choreographer Rachel Rockwell is heading the production as she makes her Goodman debut.

“It’s a very large cast production, and so I think theaters might tend to look toward other musicals when picking their seasons,” said Rockwell, who began rehearsals May 20 with the cast of 28 that features Kevin Earley as Tommy Albright and Curt Bouril as Jeff Douglas, the two American travelers who stumble upon the mythical 18th century village of Brigadoon, which appears for only one day every 100 years.

The cast also includes Larry Adams, Jordan Brown, Joseph Foronda, Rhett Guter, George Keating, Michael Aaron Lindner, Roger Mueller, Maggie Portman, Olivia Renteria, Emily Rohm, Katie Spelman, Craig Spidle, Richard Strimer and Rod Thomas. Rockwell’s ensemble of 11 also includes Drew Nellessen, who hails from Valparaiso and is a 2003 graduate of Valparaiso High School.

“In every sense, ‘Brigadoon’ is a dream piece: an emotionally rich story, romantic in the purest sense of the word, rendered against a glorious score and beautifully orchestrated story ballet—one of the things I enjoy most as a choreographer, but something few musicals have,” said Rockwell, who was approached by Alan Jay Lerner’s daughter, Liza Lerner, to revive her father’s seminal work.

Rockwell said she agreed with Lerner to remain true to the original work.

The original Broadway production in 1947 ran for nearly 600 performances in New York before hitting London’s West End and launching into another nearly 700 performances beginning in 1949.

The MGM film version of the story from 1954 directed by Vincente Minnelli starred Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, Cyd Charisse and Elaine Stewart.

Loewe’s score for the Goodman revival, including such memorable songs as “Almost Like Being in Love,” “The Heather on the Hill,” “Waitin’ For My Dearie,” “There But For You Go I” and “I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean.”

Roberta Duchak is the Music Director and Joshua Clayton is the Orchestrator for the Goodman’s production, which is the first major American revival since 1980.

Female lead actress Jennie Sophia joined this production after working with Rockwell earlier this spring at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. Rockwell, who directed the production, cast Sophia as Fantine in her sweeping musical stage story for a new run of “Les Misérables.”

Sophia also performed the role of Fiona in the June 2011 production of Light Opera Works in Evanston, as well as starring in the same role in 2002 for a run at The Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw, Ind. “My favorite musical moment in this story is with the song ‘From This Day On,’ “ Sophia said.

“It’s the most powerful moment for my character and Tommy.”

As for Nellessen, who said he’s enjoying his first opportunity to work with Rockwell, his favorite scene in the production is “The Sword Dance” musical number.

“The scene with ‘The Sword Dance’ number is challenging and that’s what makes it exciting,” he said.

Rockwell said the musical’s run time will likely be close to two hours and 20 minutes, which includes the intermission.

For the scenery design, she promises plenty of misty fog and rolling hills of Heather, the flowering bloom so associated with the show.

She believes audiences will also be impressed with the detail of the costuming for her “Brigadoon.”

“The costume research included a trip to Inverness, Scotland, which is where the fabric for the costumes came from for the designs from the tartan mill,” Rockwell said.

“All of the clans represented had to be different. And we found some of the patterns could be very bright. One pattern is even called Loud MacLeod.”
