Irvin Ray Brubaker
Irvin Ray Brubaker, 84, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Keystone Villa at Ephrata.
He was born in Myerstown to the late Norman and Lovina (Gingrich) Brubaker and was the husband of the late Mabel (Redcay) Brubaker, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Irvin was a member of Akron Community Church. He was a very faithful and devoted Christian.
He was a great husband, father, friend, and all-around wonderful person. He was a very loving, gentle, caring, kind, forgiving, patient, slow to judge, intelligent, hardworking, and talented person. He built their house in Clay Township with his own two hands that he and his wife lived in for 56 years. He also directed and contributed to the construction of numerous mobile home parks. It was often said that there was nothing that he couldn’t fix. His skills in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mobile home park construction were self-taught. Irvin was an avid baseball and hockey fan and a very avid hunter. He enjoyed

countless hours practicing baseball with his sons and a lifetime of hunting with his sons. He was most at peace and happy when he was at the family cabin in Tioga County.
Above all, Irvin was a great husband, father, and grandfather. He delighted in spending time with his family in any way possible. He spent many fun times at the family cabin where he was often found working the grill or playing pitcher in a wiffleball game. He also helped his children with many home improvement projects.
The world would be a much better place with more people like Irvin. Always willing to lend a helping hand,
always in a good mood, always gentle and caring, always accepting of everyone. Irvin is survived by two sons, Stanley R. Brubaker, husband of Cindy (Soltis) Brubaker of York, and Merle R. 1. Is the book of Romans (KJV) in the Old or New Testament or neither?
2.
Robert “Bob” James Gebhard
‘Big-Rig Bob’ amongst his peers, Bob was revered as one of the greats within his industry. In 1998, Bob opened Class 8 Parts in New Holland, along with his son-in-law John and close friend James. He retired from the business in 2004.

Robert “Bob” James Gebhard, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
He celebrated his 86th birthday in July. Born and raised in Lancaster, Bob was the son of the late Richard Gebhard and the late Barbara (Brandt) Bowers, as well as stepson to the late Faine Amelia Kolb. Bob was the devoted husband to Patricia (Shirk) Gebhard, with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage in January.
Mary Ann R. Kimmel, Brethren Village, Lititz, passed away on Friday, October 10.

Bob attended Lancaster Catholic High School, where he played football, before going on to build a successful career in the heavy-duty truck parts industry. The son of a truck driver, Bob joined Safety Sales & Service in 1957, where he worked until 1973, when he and two partners opened their own business, Big Rig Truck Parts. Big Rig later expanded into Big Rig Volvo White Truck Dealership at the intersection of Routes 222 and 322 in Ephrata.
Affectionately nicknamed
A tireless entrepreneur, Bob was also known to undertake many side business ventures and was always up for a new challenge. Most notably, as a young newlywed, Bob’s father-in-law, Joseph Shirk, asked Bob to help him open a grocery store in the second half of their family home next to Lititz Spring Park. Shirk’s Grocery & Deli went on to become a staple in the Lititz community for over three decades.
For all his many achievements, Bob considered his family to be his greatest success and his greatest joy. He was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He made his love known through being present, whether it was saving one of the kids from a broken-down vehicle, or cheering them on in a championship game. His love knew no bounds. The memories he created will be cherished forever.

Middle Creek Search & Rescue
In the Wednesday, October 22nd issue of The Shopping News, we featured local first responder organizations and how community members can support the people who keep us safe every day. We later learned that Middle Creek Search & Rescue was unintentionally left out of the list. This dedicated team plays an important role in serving our community, and we encourage everyone to support Middle Creek Search & Rescue.
Founded in 1994, Middle Creek Search & Rescue (MIDSAR) is dedicated to providing outstanding search and rescue services to the community. MIDSAR members are trained in grid searching techniques, map and compass skills, crime scene awareness, and interviewing methods. Many members continue their training to include managing search operations, SKYWARN (severe weather spotters for the National Weather Service), and ama-
teur radio licensing. Some team members choose to specialize in land navigation, emergency communications, search management, or wilderness first aid - while others train and certify their K9 for search and rescue work. Members with horses participate on the equine team.
Donation address: P.O. Box 701, Ephrata, PA 17522 Volunteer opportunities: The team is always looking for volunteers to join the team, as well as subjects to hide for K9s in training simulations. NOCH DER ARN
beim Solly Hulsbuck
(Harvey M. Miller, Elizabethville, Dauphin County, PA)
Loss uns amol arnschtlich driwwer denke.
Un des is not all. Was hebt er sei Taasle so hoch!
Datt sin scheene, gehle Wassermelons dick voll ungebore Karpse Kustards. Was en Luscht, was en Freed!
Ken Haus in de Schtadt, mit gepolishede Floors un deiere Pickders rumhenke, is naegscht so schee.
Die Bauerei is en mechdich Palascht im Summer. Alle Feld is en Schtubb. Doh is em Bauer sei Parlor, mit griene Axminister un Wilton Karpets uff em Floor un frische rode Glee-Blumme drin rum.

AFTER THE HARVEST

Since the wind is now blowing over the oats stubbles and nights are becoming cooler, too cool to sleep alone, the farmer begins to reflect on how he stands. How were the crops?

So many acres he had out in wheat, so many in rye, so many in oats, etc. How does it look after the harvest? Let

us consider seriously. A few weeks ago, out there from the barn, there was a wheat field. It looked exactly like a huge piece of butterbread, as yellow as gold. There was a field of rye, where the clouds threw their shadows over it and the wind that passed over it moved the shadows back and forth like a ship at sea. And the oats, like a great greenback fresh from the bank, how it got the jaundice as the sun turned the other fields to gold!
By this time the fields have been shorn clean, with nothing but disheveled straw stubbles to cover their nakedness, but the farmer’s barn is the flour chest of the world until the harvest returns.
And this is not all. On all hills there stand, and sometimes down in the hollows, a great Indian corn harvest. This was called the king of the farmer’s crops. How high it lifts its tassels! What a long-legged, well-built king, oh, it stands high above the rail fence, and its fur (?) reaches toward the heavens! Its bags (pockets?) stand out, stuffed with round clubs with golden buttons out around, hidden in silk. There it stands like a fresh, young soldier, as straight as a string. Row upon row, fields filled with corn, all with golden clubs in the bag (pocket?) to keep hunger from the land.
And there between the rows, just look at those large, round balls of butter! There are beautiful, yellow watermelons full of unborn pumpkin custards. What a joy to behold!
And next comes the buckwheat field. Soon it is dotted with small white flowers and looks like a summer snow all over the field. Here the bees fill up with honey and turn the nectar of the flowers to gold water.
It appears that nature is always manufacturing gold. Polly says, when God created the earth, he placed a golden kiss in the hearts of flowers. And now, when the farmer plants his seeds, all turns to gold. As the grain comes up, kissed by rain and sun, the fields begin to shine. No house in the city, with polished floors and expensive pictures on the walls is nearly as lovely.
The farm is a mighty palace in summer. Every field is a room. Here is the farmer’s parlor, with green Axminister and Wilton carpets on the floor and fresh red clover blossoms in them. There is a room covered with gold, and here one laid in silver. The flowers are his pictures, just as God painted them. And down in the meadow where the quails call, and here in the house where his mate sings, he hears music that penetrates deeper into the heart than one can hear in the city. So, when the wind whistles over the oats stubbles, and
the farmer reflects on his lot, he says: “We thank you, dear Father in heaven!”

On Saturday morning, July 30, Allen G. Musser, “der deitsch Greemer vun Baumannswill,” read NOCH DER ARN on his weekly radio program over WBYO in Boyertown, PA. We were so taken with this Solly Hulsbuck piece that we decided we had to share it with all our good Deitsch Eck Leser. NOCH DER ARN surely must be one of the most beautiful prose pieces Solly has ever written. We hope all our readers will share our delight in it. Those of you who are writing Dutch pieces and sharing them with us from time to time might well take NOCH DER ARN as a piece to emulate. In fact, we challenge all you Dutch writers out there to send us IN UNSER MUDDERSCHPROOCH your description of a scene from nature.
This week we salute our friend, Allen G. Musser, “der deitsch Greemer vun Baumannswill,” and thank him for bringing NOCH DER ARN to our attention! It is truly one of the small gems in Pennsylvania German literature!!!

“Don’t take it lightly”
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Romans 2:4“Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and restraint and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?”
This verse is a question with an implied answer of yes; we do think lightly of God’s kindness, restraint and patience. Other translations render “think lightly” as “show contempt,” “presume on,” “disregard,” “despise” or “have no regard.” The Greek translation means to despise, scorn and show it by active insult. The original word is from two words, Kata (against) and Phroneo (to
think); to think against. We need to deeply consider how good, forgiving and unwilling God is to execute judgment on mankind. He dearly loves everyone and is “not willing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9). God said in Ezekiel 33:11, “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.”
We can see the goodness, kindness and longsuffering of God in His unwillingness to bring judgment on Israel. Time and time again, He sent prophets to warn of coming judgment if they did not repent their deeds and change their direction, turn from idolatry and return to Him. He sent the prophets, but they would not listen. Five times in Amos’ chapter four, God said, “But you would not return to me” after he caused droughts and other judgments to bring them back. Christ’s words echo the same response in his call to the nation of Israel“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you! How

often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling” (Matthew 23:37). God’s goodness, kindness, patience and restraint leads us to the place of repentance as our verse declares. Exactly what is repentance?
Metanoia is the Greek word most commonly translated as repentance. This word literally means “change of mind.” It is a turnabout, 180 degrees and a completely different direction. Biblical repentance involves the
whole person - the intellectual, the emotional and the willful.
The changing of the mind (what we think) is the first step of repentance. It can be best illustrated by Lee Strobel’s journey to faith. Strobel was an investigative journalist for the Chicago Tribune. Lee tried to disprove the newfound Christian faith of his wife Leslie. He decided to start at the resurrection. He felt that if he could disprove the resurrection of Christ, a person would have no reason

to believe anything else in scripture. Lee soon realized that the resurrection of Christ is irrefutable and embraced Christ as Savior. He thought one way at the beginning of his pursuit and now has had a complete change of mind.
Repentance also involves the emotion. We are sorry for our sinful behavior, not just the consequences of it.
Luke 18:13 best describes the emotional side of repentance - “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to raise his eyes toward heaven, but was beating his chest, saying, ‘God be merciful to me, the sinner!’” Finally, a change in the will produces a change in conduct and purpose in our life, which is evidence of true conversion
Josh McDowell, like Lee Strobel, attempted to refute the resurrection of Christ. He was “sick and tired of those Christians on campus.” Upon a serious and arduous investigation, he too realized that Christianity’s resurr-
ection of Christ is supported by solid evidence. His research gave Christianity some of the best evidence for the resurrection ever published. His studies produced, “Evidence That Demands a Verdict.” This book is one of the most exhaustive and comprehensive works ever written that verifies the resurrection. Both Strobel and McDowell had a 180-degree change in direction because they honestly looked at the evidence.
So, our study verse says that the kindness, restraint, patience and goodness of God leads us to a change of intellect (the mind), emotion (how we feel about sin) and will (our new desire to obey). Let’s consider some instances of these attributes of God’s character and how they relate to the unbeliever for salvation, the believer for sanctification and the direction of our nation. We will consider these next time.

National Junior Honor Society Conducts “Hope” Donation Drive

Kelly Martin, collected donations for both the Ephrata Cancer Center and the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Students collected comfort items such as socks, blan-
kets, puzzle books, journals, gift cards, mouthwash, lavender bar soap, strengthening and non-toxic nail polish, nasal saline spray, tissues, hand sanitizer, water bottles, as well as cards of encouragement, and a hope banner for cancer patients. The students, along with advisor Kelly Martin and numerous parents, delivered the care items to the
Barshinger Center to a very appreciative staff who will disperse the items. Kelly says this is a pretty special “give back” as she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2022 and went through treatment at Barshinger. Many of her eighth grade NJHS students have watched her hair grow back and know her journey. It was a special day to enter
that building with her students, who are brining donations for cancer patients!

Lions Donate To Park Association
Each September, the Reamstown Memorial Park Association sponsors “Reamstown Days.” This two-day event offers the local community food, games and live concerts while raising funds for the maintenance of the Reamtown Memorial Park. Each year, the East Cocalico Lions Club sell their delicious French fries at this event, donating the fries themselves and supplying the “Lion Power.” The profit from the weekend is donated back to the Park Association. Recently, Lion Mark Janke presented a check for $2,207 to the Park Association, representing this donation. Lions Clubs “Serve” Their Community When In Need
Casey Ellis, Executive Director of Ephrata Area Social Services (EASS), was starting to worry. Inflation and the increase in the cost of food prices, gas, oil, and other utilities had caused their client numbers to double and their food bank shelves were empty.
Just in time, several Northern Lancaster County Lions Clubs (East Cocalico, Ephrata, Akron and the Cocalico High School Leos), demonstrated what their motto of “We Serve” means and came to Casey’s rescue by holding a Food Drive at three local grocery stores.
The Lions asked shoppers at these stores to purchase at least one non-perishable item and give that item or items to a Lion as they left the store. Over a two-day period, they collected an astounding 300 boxes of food, along with over $1,500 in cash, for the Ephrata Area Social Services and its food bank. This was six tons of food!

Civil Air Patrol “Pull-A-Plane” For Cancer Research
Members of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, participated in the Men Wear Pink of South Central Pennsylvania “PullA-Plane” fundraiser event at the Lancaster Airport on Saturday, October 4.
At the Lancaster Municipal Airport, the “Pull-A-Plane for a Cure” team-building event had groups of 10 competing to pull the C-54D “Spirit of Freedom” plane 100 feet to raise money for cancer research. Standing 27 feet six inches tall, with a wingspan of 117 feet six inches, a length of 93 feet 10 inches and an unloaded weight at 52,000 poundsthis was no small feat. This plane was used in participation in the Berlin Airlift 1948 to 1949. Their efforts contributed to the fundraiser’s success raising nearly $12,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome.

Stauffer

Dayton Stauffer, is an Ephrata High School senior. On the football field, Stauffer’s knowledge of the game is shown as soon as the ball is snapped. He is injured this year and will miss the football season, but his contributions go far beyond the field. Right now, Stauffer’s job is to help the new players on the sidelines. “I told coach that I was going to help the new players since I’m not able to help on the field. I remember when I joined and having someone give me direction was important for my success.”
Stauffer is an athlete holding all the qualities of a blazing star. In addition to football, his skill is also shown on the track team.
After Stauffer walks across the graduation stage, he plans to go to college and study communications. His loving parents, Lisa and Ryan Stauffer, have helped him grow to be mature. He always finds ways to cheer people up. Stauffer has a bright future ahead of him.

Written by: Darren Morrison
Stauffer is quick-witted, never letting anything past him. He enjoys going to school to see his friends and is often enjoying a laugh with a group of friends. He may not tell you he is, but there is no doubt he is destined for greater things. Stauffer’s wittiness and leadership will make him thrive anywhere he goes beyond high school.
