With the apparatus already drivable, the goal of the restoration was to pump and flow water as it did more than a century ago. This project was completed by the membership of the fire company and local area businesses with no monetary expense to the fire company for future generations to see and appreciate this rare and unique apparatus. The
truck’s motor and Howe pump are dated to the mid1890s and were transferred from a horse drawn cart to the Model T truck in 1919 by the Adamstown Fire Company. This truck was retired from service in the 1929/1930 time frame due to mechanical failure and age.
The Adamstown Fire Company is very thankful for all the local businesses who aided them in this restoration project, and would also like to give special thanks to Merle Martin and Bob Achey for the countless hours they contributed to it as well.

Civil Air Patrol Cadets Earn Scholarships
Two Lancaster Civil Air Patrol Jesse Jones Composite Squadron Cadets, Cadet Colonel Slater Shannon and Second Lieutenant Lucyann Draeger were both awarded the Major Jack Weckerle Memorial Scholarship at their Monday, October 13 meeting.
The Jesse Jones Squadron is proud to announce the recipients of the prestigious annual Major Jack Weckerle Memorial Scholarship as Cadet Colonel Slater Shannon, East York, and Cadet
Second Lieutenant Lucyann Draeger, Landisville. The scholarship was established in honor of the late Jack Weckerle and presented by his son, Jack Jr. It recognizes outstanding cadets who demonstrate exceptional dedication to aviation and community service. The recipients received twentyfive hundred dollars each and will contribute towards their private pilot’s license training.
In the past year, Cadet Colonel Slater Shannon received an Achievement Award, a Commander’s Commendation and completed the highest achievement of the cadet program earning the Spaatz Award. Shannon attended the Air Force Supervised Undergraduate Pilot Training Familiarization Course this summer, earned first place in the CAP Aerospace competition in Pennsylvania, and as former Cadet Commander, now is an advisor to the current Cadet Commander.
Second Lieutenant Lucyann Draeger also received an Achievement Award and
earned her Billy Mitchell Award becoming an officer. Draeger attended the Blue Berret National Cadet Special Activity this past summer enabling her to train and work on the flight line in Oshkosh, WI. Her current role at the squadron is Flight Commander.
Major Jack Weckerle’s career in aviation began with humble origins. At the age of 18, he joined the Air Force with dreams of working in the space program. Fate led him to aviation mechanics, which was his true calling. Facing limited job opportunities, Weckerle began
working at Pan Am as an aircraft cleaner. His love for airplanes led him to pursue his pilot’s license and to realize his dreams to become a pilot of the Boeing 707 and 747 aircraft that he once cleaned earlier in his career.
Major Jack Weckerle was an integral part of the Jesse Jones Squadron for ten years. As an aviation mechanic, he contributed to the Civil Air Patrol by ensuring the squadron’s airplanes were in top condition. As a pilot, he enjoyed taking new cadets on orientation flights and introducing cadets into aviation. The scholarship
continues his legacy to support the squadron cadets in aviation after his many years of service.
Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday (except holidays) at 7:00 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located on the airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are always welcome. Shown in the photo, from left to right, are Lt. Col. Glenn Baugher, Cadet
Second Lieutenant Lucyann Draeger, Jack Weckerle Jr. and Cadet Colonel Slater Shannon.

FLAVORS
November is just days away, bringing a chill to the air and turning thoughts towards the upcoming holiday season. Whether you are looking for a special dessert to grace your Thanksgiving table, or just a warm treat from the oven on a cozy fall day, you are sure to find a flavor of pie that suits your needs.
We asked our readers to share their favorite recipes. We received many responses, including those below. To view all of the recipes submitted, along with those submitted for past Hometown Flavors sections, visit snews.com/recipes.
Lemon Sponge Pie
Kay Weaver, Lititz
1 pie crust, homemade or store bought
2 eggs, yolks separated from whites
zest from 1 lemon
¼ cup fresh lemon juice
(may need 2 lemons for juice)
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons softened butter
1 cup milk
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Separate egg yolks from whites and place whites in an electric mixer bowl. Beat with a whisk attachment on medium to high speed until stiff peaks form. Remove from mixer to a separate bowl and set aside.
In the same mixer bowl, add
the egg yolks, zest, lemon juice, sugar, flour and butter. Mix until well incorporated. Slowly add milk and mix until just combined (mixture will be thin).
Gently fold the egg whites into the lemon mixture until combined, making sure there are no lumps. Pour filling into the unbaked pie shell.
Bake until golden brown and set in the center, about 45 to 50 minutes. If getting too brown toward the end of baking, you can cover with foil for the remainder of the baking time.
Cool for about one hour on a wire rack. Cover and refrigerate for 3 hours or longer before serving.
Notes: Eggs can be taken out of the refrigerator about an hour before making the pie filling. Egg whites at room temperature will beat better into stiff peaks. A glass pie dish will also help to cook the crust more, preventing a soggy crust.

MUSIC IN MY WORLD
There is music everywhere, If one listens for it.
Not just music from a box Or music bought in the store.
Music is on every hand, Listen a bit.
On a cold winter night, Listen to the sleet.
Sleet is like a lullaby, It whispers softly to one.
One nestles deep into the featherbed, So glad to be safely at home.
And what better music is there Than rain on the roof?
Water in a small stream
Talks to one and laughs.
Music from all the birds
We cannot forget.
How important bird music is To me, I cannot measure.
And the music of the wind Whistles past the house.
And it sounds quite different Through the pine trees out back.
Children make music too,
When they laugh innocently.
Thunder gives us loud music
With bass drum roll and mighty cracks.
Listen to the mighty voice of the sea, It is full of might and strength.
Those songs from the sea
Are eternal, day and night.
When mother rattles
In the kitchen while cooking, The dishes on the table make
Music of the best sort.
That rooster sings his song
Much too early in the day, I think. And the tea kettle hums it’s music
Early in the morning in the kitchen.
Music is made when one milks
And the milk hits the bucket.
One finds music everywhere In the valley and on the hill.
Yes, one hears the bumble bee humming, And the tree frogs in springtime.
The little cricket sings during the summer For all the good country folks.
Listen then to all the music Of the earth and of the sea.
If you are quiet and listen carefully, You will hear more and more. ***

Woman’s Club Of Ephrata Meeting
The following are the October highlights from the Woman’s Club of Ephrata’s meeting.
“The October breeze might have carried a chill, but inside the Eicher Arts Center, warmth filled every corner. Members gathered for our fall meeting, surrounded by the cheerful glow of pumpkins, the soft rustle of leaves, and the friendly hum of conversation. It was one of those golden afternoons that reminds us just how much we treasure our time together. Our guest speaker, Joe Salerno of the Defensive Skills Academy, led a fascinating and practical talk on “Situational Awareness for Everyday Life.” With his background as a first responder and safety instructor, Joe reminded us that awareness is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to stay safe. He spoke about the importance of being present—keeping your eyes up, scanning your surroundings, and trusting that inner voice when something feels off. He encouraged us to make small, mindful choices that help us move through the world with confidence rather than fear. His thoughtful approach blended realworld advice with a reassuring reminder that preparedness doesn’t mean paranoia—it means empowerment.
After the meeting came to order, the air buzzed with reports, updates, and the comforting rhythm of club business. The autumn decorations were lovely this month, with mums and gourds bringing a touch of harvest charm to our Ephrata sign. Our gardeners once again showed their gift for creating beauty wherever they go.
The Arts and Entertainment Committee shared exciting plans for the upcoming Celebration of Children’s Literature at the end of November. Our club’s themed tree, inspired by “Darby the Brave Little Duck,” will delight young visitors while capturing the
story’s message of courage and kindness. In January, members will gather for a cheerful papercrafting event, creating mini 2026 calendars—a perfect way to start the year surrounded by friendship and creativity.
Our Book Bunch has found a lovely new home at the Tin Roof Café, where the group continues its journey through wonderful reads and lively discussion. The October selection, “In Five Years,” sparked plenty of thoughtful conversation, and November’s book, “The Vaster Wilds,” promises to do the same. There’s something special about sharing stories over a warm cup of coffee on a crisp morning.
Throughout the meeting, there was a sense of care and connection that always fills our gatherings. Updates were shared about members facing health challenges, reminding us how deeply we value one another. The Homelife Committee continues to keep our members in their hearts and prayers, sending cards and kind words when they’re needed most.
The season of giving is upon us once again. Donations are being collected for our sponsored Christmas family, ensuring two children will experience the magic of the holidays. We’re also gathering cards for activeduty military members and gifts for veterans at the Lebanon VA. These efforts, though simple, reflect the true heart of our club—quiet acts of service that ripple outward in kindness.
Fundraising continues to be a bright spot this year. Our fall Bingo was a resounding success, both in joy and generosity, and there’s already talk of a spring event. Preparations are underway for the everpopular cheese spread fundraiser, along with the ongoing car wash and lottery ticket sales. Each of these projects plays a part in keeping our club thriving and able to give back in meaningful ways.
We also received several community updates, including an opportunity to assist with the Sweigart Foundation’s tea next June. There was even a signup sheet for the annual “wreath fluffing” at the end of the month—a task as messy as it is merry! Plans for our December Christmas meeting are also
shaping up, with a festive $10 gift exchange and plenty of holiday cheer in store.
Perhaps the sweetest moment of the afternoon was welcoming a new member into our fold. There’s always a special joy in seeing our circle grow, and we look forward to many wonderful years ahead together.
As autumn deepens and the holidays draw near, we’re reminded of how truly rich our lives are—not in things, but in friendships, laughter, and shared purpose. We look forward to gathering again in November for a presentation by a talented local artist who finds beauty in heirlooms and miniature portraits.
If you’ve been thinking about joining us, there’s no better time. The Woman’s Club of Ephrata is where friendship and community meet in the most delightful way. For membership information, please contact Nancy at 7178086739 or Norma at 7178035250.

Everybody’s a Somebody in the Body of Christ by Pastor Kevin Sadler
This article is an excerpt from the booklet “Everybody’s a Somebody in the Body of Christ,” by Pastor Kevin Sadler, based on episode 6 of the TV series, Transformed by Grace.
“For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where
were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him. And if they were all one member, where were the body?” (1 Cor. 12:1419).
These verses in 1 Corinthians 12 teach that each and every member of the Body of Christ is vitally important. Nobody’s a nobody. Everybody’s a somebody. Each has an essential role.
Many of the Corinthian believers were not happy with their gifts, and many in the church wanted a gift that someone else had. Paul says, “the Body is not one member.” That is, we simply cannot all hold the same position in the Body. God has graced different people with different abilities, and God in His wisdom and sovereignty has placed each of us in the Body where we will be the most useful for Him: “God set the members…as it hath pleased Him” (v. 18).
The “honourable”/“less honourable” and “comely”/“uncomely” members (v. 23) that Paul refers to is from man’s point of view (“which seem,” v. 22; “which we think,” v. 23).
From God’s vantage point, all members of the Body of Christ are important and necessary.
“Sir Michael Costa, the celebrated conductor, was holding a rehearsal. As the mighty chorus rang out, accompanied by scores of instruments, the piccolo player — a little pintsized flute—thinking perhaps that his contribution would not be missed amid so much music, stopped playing.
“Suddenly, the great leader stopped and cried out, ‘Where is the piccolo?’
The sound of that one small instrument was necessary to the harmony, and the master conductor missed it when it dropped out. The point? To the conductor, there are no insignificant instruments in
an orchestra. Sometimes the smallest and seemingly least important one can make the greatest contribution. Even if it doesn’t seem to make that big a difference to the audience at large, the conductor knows it right away!
In the church, the players and the instruments are diverse — different sizes, different shapes, different notes, and different roles to play. Like the piccolo player in Sir Michael’s orchestra, we often in our own sovereignty decide that our contribution is not significant. Our contribution couldn’t possibly make a difference, so we quit playing, stop doing that which we’ve been given to do. We drop out, but the Conductor immediately notices. From our perspective, our contribution may be small; but from His, it is crucial.
I just have to believe I’m talking to some piccolo players who have dropped out of the orchestra for whatever reasons: pain,
exhaustion, insecurity, criticism, laziness, misbehavior. Convinced that your contribution doesn’t mean a hill of beans in the bigger scheme of things, you have buried your talent in the ground.”
That’s what Paul says in verses 15,16; to paraphrase, “Should the foot complain that he is only a foot and not a hand, or the ear that he is not the eye?” That is, the foot is a part of the body, the ear is a part of the body, and they’re both needed. For a body to be a body, it must have different parts and diverse members. Similarly, as members of the Body of Christ, we have particular functions to perform. Our purpose in life should be to perform our separate functions as well as we possibly can, and in His strength for the glory of God.
God does not want us to envy other people’s gifts and positions in the Body of Christ, and He also does not want us to judge others who may have a different
gift. Some are prayer warriors, some are evangelists, some are teachers, some are pastors, some give, some rule, some show mercy and compassion, some minister by caring for the poor, providing for the sick, or watching over the local church. We’re not all eyes, nor hands, nor feet, and we’re not all ears. If we were all the one same part of the Body, like the eye, Paul says in verse 17, then how would we hear, and if we were all an ear, how would we smell? In other words, if we all had the same position in the Body, how would the Body work? How would we minister? It would not even be a Body as verse 19 shows. The diversity in the Body allows Christ’s Church to reach more people, to help more people, to minister to more people. The Church is most effective with its members faithfully performing the different ministries to which God has called them.
