A PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN ANTHOLOGY
Edited By Earl C. Haag
This week, we are celebrating the publication of the first broad anthology of Pennsylvania German literature in the latter part of this century. In addition to many dialect poems, Haag’s anthology also includes Dutch newspaper columns and excerpts from Pennsylvania German plays. The collections of Heinz Kloss and Ralph Charles Wood were published in Germany many years ago and have long since been out of print. Harry Hess Reichard’s 1940 anthology is a collection of poetry only.
To indicate the depth of the history of our dialect literature, we are featuring in this ECK the very first poem in Haag’s anthology. Emanuel Rondthaler’s MARYETS UN OWETS (Owetlied). In Professor Haag’s words, MARYETS UN OWETS is “generally acknowledged to the first piece of true literature published in the PG (Pennsylvania German) dialect.” According to Haag, MARYETS UN OWETS was published anonymously in the August 1849 issue of Deutscher Kirchenfreund under the title “Abendlied.” Edward Rondthaler Sr. was a minister in the Moravian (Herrnhuter) Church and served first as a tutor and then principal at Nazareth Hall, Nazareth till 1854. The poem was again published in 1869 by William C. Reichel in a historical sketch commemorating the centennial of
Nazareth Hall. MARYETS UN OWETS appeared in the PennsylvaniaGerman magazine for the month of April 1900 and again in May 1906, “at which time editor H. A. Schuler informed his readers that in response to his inquiry, Miss Elisabeth Rondthaler, daughter of Emanuel, affirmed that her father had indeed written the poem ‘about 1835, he then being twenty years old.’” The poem was reprinted in Daniel Miller’s Pennsylvania German, Volume 2, published in Reading in 1911, and in several publications since. Thus it is fitting that Professor Haag begins his anthology with MARYETS UN OWETS and we feature it in this ECK, a salute to this landmark publication.
MARYETS UN OWETS (Owetlied)
By Emanuel Rondthaler Sr.
Alles dutt sich ennere do, Nix bleibt immer so wie nau; Was em Freht macht, bleibt net so, Watt gaar arrig ball hatt un rau.
Drowwe watt es annerscht sei, Datt, wu’s nau so bloh aussicht; Datt iss maryets alles fei, Datt iss owets alles licht.

MORNINGS AND EVENINGS (Evening Song)
Mornings the sun shines so lovely, Evenings the yellow moon rises; Mornings the dew lies on the clover, Evenings it is dry.
Mornings all the birds sing, Evenings the treetoad cries loudly; Mornings one pounds with the flail, Evenings one already lies in the coffin.
Everything changes here, Nothing remains as it is now; What brings joy does not remain, It soon becomes hard and rough.

Ach, wie dutt’s mich doch gelischde Nooch der blohe Wohning datt; Datt mit alle gude Grischde, Freht zu hawwe, Ruh alsfatt.
Up there it will be different, There, where it looks so blue; There in the morning all is just fine, There in the evening all is light.
Mornings complete joy is there, Evenings it’s still the same; Mornings the heart is so still, Evenings we are still glad.

Oh, how I long
For the blue dwelling there; There with good Christians, To have joy and eternal peace.
When they carry me to my grave, Weep not, for it is so beautiful; When they say “It is evening,” Think with Him it’s all the same.
***
This 352 page paperbound book gives examples of original poetry, prose and drama by 53 of our dialect’s best authors. There are 165 items in the dialect in the anthology. The Contents lists all the authors and their works in the order in which they appear in the book. Haag’s excellent ten page Introduction is a must for all who have a serious interest in the history of our Dutch literature. Each author is introduced in a brief account of his life and work.
The volume includes a 20 page Glossary of English translations of dialect words and idioms found in the anthology. The names of numbers, days of the week and months, and words which the reader can reasonably be expected to know (sei, geh, der Vadder, etc.) have not been included. A three page Bibliography includes generally the printed sources of the texts in the anthology. At the very end there is a threepage Index of Authors and Titles. ***
We are hopeful that by the time this ECK appears, Haag’s PG Anthology will be on the shelves of your favorite bookstores (Provident?). Please let us know if there are any bookstores in your area which should carry this book.

Facing Opposition
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Nehemiah 4:9“But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night.”
Trouble from fellow brethren: There was a shortage of grain in that time and the Jerusalem leaders were lending to their brethren and collecting interest. The Jewish nation was commanded to not charge brethren interest. This practice was strictly forbidden. In Exodus 22:25 it says, “If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you are not to act as a creditor to him; you shall not charge him interest.” It doesn’t get much clearer than that. Unfortunately, many of the influential leaders were exacting usury, as it is called in the Bible. It even progressed to the point of mortgaging their houses and land to buy food because of a famine in the land. Some properties were seized by their own brethren. Unfortu
nately, there are those in the brotherhood who are disobedient to the word of God and cause serious problems in the assembly. Some of these people are the tares and not the true wheat. Some are brethren and just disobedient. It will always be so. Don’t lose heart. We are often disillusioned when leaders or those who are prominent in the church, live in obvious sin. Some believers will always take advantage of brethren and the church. I remember all too well, as a member in a local assembly, the Worship Leader, of all people, was convicted of a money scheme that went on in the church. He swindled people out of a lot of money… in the church yet! He ended up in prison. Don’t look at others, it’s Christ we look unto. Hebrews 12:2 says, “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” When this happens in the church, we all are taken aback, but we must continue on.
Nehemiah faced this problem head on with sound discipline. He didn’t hope the problem would just go away. First, he gave it a lot of thought, then acted by

calling the assembly and rebuked them for their conduct. He also set measures in place to make sure the nobles obeyed and the practice ceased. Remember in 1st Samuel 2:1236 how weak Eli was in rebuking his sons for their wicked conduct “Why do you do such things?” He made no attempt to correct his sons and the Lord destroyed them. Nehemiah 5:6, 7 “And I became very angry after I heard their outcry and these words. After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, ‘each of you is exacting usury from his brother.’ So I called a great assembly against them.” In verse 11, Nehemiah commands them to restore their houses, lands and to repay some of the monies they took from the brethren in interest. Next, Nehemiah required an oath before the priests from the leaders to restore back to the people and cease the practice. Lastly, Nehemiah offers his own example of obedience He, as the governor, was allowed to tax the people for his own needs, but did no such thing. Former governors took bread, wine, silver and servants from the people.
“Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor’s provisions. But the former governors who had been before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides silver, but I did not because of the fear of God” (Nehemiah 5:14, 15).
You will always face opposition. You will face it from the world because it is diametrically opposed to God, hates God and will always seek to destroy your faith. We may always face opposition in the form of self that says as the workers, “there is too much rubble to continue the work.” I fear the opposition, maybe I should just quit. We will face opposition from fellow, disobedient brethren, who by their conduct, will disillusion us. Instead, we should be looking unto Jesus. Face the opposition by first of all knowing it will always be there. Secondly, pray first and then make a plan Thirdly, remember how great and awesome our God is

Lititz Historical Foundation Meeting
Join the Lititz Historical Foundation for their Annual Meeting at the Lititz Public Library on Saturday, November 15, beginning at 1:30 p.m. After some brief items of business, they’ll turn the afternoon over to Lititz Historical Foundation President Cory Van Brookhoven, who will discuss the history of turnpike mile markers in Lancaster County.
Generations ago, Lancaster County had ten “turnpikes” that ran through many of its towns, with small markers

noting the distance at each mile. While they were once critical, today, many of these makers have been removed, destroyed, or have simply vanished from their original locations. Van Brookhoven will discuss the history of these markers and also present updates concerning the whereabouts of many of these important parts of our county’s history.
The presentation is free and open to the public. The Lititz Library is located at 651 Kissel Hill Road Lititz. Signups begin on Saturday, November 1 at 9:00 a.m. Beginning on that date and time, contact the Lititz Library to reserve your spot by calling 717-626-2255. Seating is limited to 100 people.

* “To remove spots from suede, try using an art gum eraser.” J.C. in Florida
* Wet weather can affect your outdoor appliances, making rust a problem sometimes. This even happens to the metal end of a lightbulb in an outdoor fixture. Coat threads of the light bulb with petroleum jelly to keep it from rusting and becoming hard to remove.
* To remove scuffs from your linoleum floors, simply cut a small “X” into a tennis ball and push the tip of your broom handle into it. When you come across a sticky spot while sweeping, flip the broom and rub the spot with the tennis ball.
* “As you pack away your pool supplies, you might want to save the water wings for this cruise/duty-free alcohol hack: Use blowup arm floaties to protect your liquor bottles while being transported in luggage. Use one or a set depending on the size of the bottle.” T.T. in Georgia
* Boots will be coming out of storage soon, or new boots will be purchased, while the pool supplies will be packed away for the winter. Save your pool noodles to keep boots sitting upright. Simply cut a pool noodle to the height of the boot top and insert. Lo and behold, the boots won’t flop over. This extends the life of the boot.
* “For troublesometoopen jars pickles and such use a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. It’s a great gripper, especially if

your hands are the least bit moist.” D.L. in Indiana
* If you get a graycolored film on your utensils after they come out of the dishwasher, try cleaning them with a cream of tartar paste. Additionally, clean out the filter regularly.
* “I love my blender and use it all the time, but I don’t always have time to clean the blades properly when I’m in a rush. There is a spot under the blades that I find it hard to clean if my smoothie gets dried on. I have found a way to clean it now, though, with rice! A couple of spoonfuls in the otherwise clean blender, and the rice buffs any residue right off. I even use the rice powder in a homemade facial mask that makes my skin feel great!”
D.W. in Oregon
* Have you nailed down your holiday shopping list yet? Many find it distasteful to see Christmas and other holiday items out so early, but studies show that the
earlier you start, the less you spend. Likely because you are not rushed and are able to take advantage of sales and to shop smart.
* Use cola to marinate your meat! The acids in the soda pop make meat nice and tender before cooking, and sugar can actually give you a nice caramel flavor on the outside too. You can use a cola bath for meat on the grill or search cookbooks or internet sites for great slowcooker recipes.
* “If your cat regularly has issues with hair balls, try giving it a teaspoon of olive oil a day. Mine loves it and will lick it right off a saucer, but you could drizzle it over food too. It’s better than butter, because it’s good fats not bad.” Y.E. in Missouri

* A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bottom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away.

It works for us!” A.A. in California

1. Who had a No. 1 hit with “Indian Reservation”?
2. “Moon River” was used in which film?
3. Name the duo that released “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.”
4. Which group released “Get Off of My Cloud”?
5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “The stars won’t come out if they know that you’re about, Cause they couldn’t match the glow of your eyes.”
Answers
1. Paul Revere & The Raiders, in 1971. The song was originally released in 1959 under the title “The Pale Faced Indian.”
2. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in 1961, and sung by Audrey Hepburn. Andy Williams covered the song later, and his version went into the National Recording Registry in 2022.
3. The Righteous Brothers, in 1964. Producer Phil Spector had the wrong time printed on the label so DJs would think the song was shorter and give it more airtime.
4. The Rolling Stones, in 1965.
5. “Candida,” by Tony Orlando and Dawn, in 1970. Orlando was hesitant to release the song because he was working for a different publishing house and was afraid of losing his job. To keep his secret, the song was released as being done only by Dawn.

PUBLIC AUCTION
CUSTOM 4 BDRM. STONE RANCHER 2 CAR GARAGE – .85 ACRE LOT

* On October 20, 1967, the mythical Bigfoot was believed to have been filmed in northern California, firing the imaginations of numerous enthusiasts. However, when a prominent researcher sent the FBI a supposed hair sample, agents concluded that it was, sadly, of “deer family origin.”
* On October 21, 1797, the USS Constitution launched in Boston Harbor. A 44gun U.S. Navy frigate, it was constructed to fight Barbary pirates off the coast of Tripoli, and performed admirably during those conflicts. In 1805, a peace treaty with Tripoli was signed on the Constitution’s deck.
* On October 22, 1895, a train with a faulty brake tore through the Gare Montparnasse in Paris and out the front before landing nose down in the street. Onlookers purchased train tickets just to see the damage.
* On October 23, 1958, Boris Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “Doctor Zhivago,” a romance set during the Russian Revolution and World War I. The book was banned in the Soviet Union, and the Soviet government
forced Pasternak to renounce the honor, but his admirers smuggled the manuscript out of Russia in pieces and the CIA helped with distribution behind the scenes. Appearing in numerous translations around the world, it was hailed as a classic, but Pasternak was banished from the Soviet Writers Union, ending his literary career.
* On October 24, 1921, in the French town of ChalonssurMarne, an American sergeant chose the body of the first “Unknown Soldier” to be honored among the approximately 77,000 American servicemen who died on the Western Front during World War I.
* On October 25, 1964, Minnesota Vikings star defensive end Jim Marshall ran 66 yards in the wrong direction into his own end zone after recovering a fumble against the 49ers in San Francisco. Despite the gaffe, the Vikings won.
* On October 26, 1984, 19yearold John McCollum was found shot to death on his bed in Indio, California. The boy’s parents believed that singer Ozzy Osbourne was responsible, because John was listening to Osbourne’s album “Blizzard of Oz,” which contained the song “Suicide Solution,” when he died, but the suit was dismissed in 1988.

Gehmans Mennonite
Alexis Oberholtzer 8th Grade

Oberholtzer

If you ever have the chance to meet someone in the eighth-grade class at GMS, one person you need to meet is Lexi. Lexi is a wonderful person to be around every day. She really enjoys the social part of school and will definitely miss the social life after graduating. After graduating at GMS as part of the class of 2026, she plans to join the Fierce homeschool group to play volleyball, so she can still interact with other girls and make new friendships.
A handful of Lexi’s hobbies can include reading different books, drawing, volleyball, and one of her favorites is listening to music. Along with her parents (Dalton and Heidi) and her two other brothers, she attends Shiloh Mennonite Church every Sunday.
When Lexi was asked the question, “If she would have the chance to change anything in the world, what would it be?” She responded by saying, “I would love to have no abortions in the nation.”
Lexi confidentially says that someone she truly admires is her pastor, Dave Weber, there at Shiloh.

Written by: Alyssa Landis
She feels that one of her greatest accomplishments was, “finally being able to draw a human without making it look like a deflated balloon”.
When given the choice of what to eat, Lexi would be one of the first to call out and say, Chinese food, please! Lexi also enjoys playing the piano in her free time. Overall, I would say that Lexi is someone that you would need to talk to in your life even if it is just popping into her life and saying hi.

Mariah Santiago

Senior year can be one of the most stressful seasons for high-achieving students with ambitious plans for their future, but Mariah Santiago thrives under stress. Santiago, grade 12, is involved in Class of 2026, National Honor Society, Vocal ensemble, Chorus, Orchestra, Cheerleading, Garden Spot Performing Arts and Health Council.

Cheerleading has been an important part of Santiago’s life since she was in kindergarten and this year she’s serves as co-captain of the varsity squad.
During Santiago’s sophomore year, she began participating in the school’s theater group, Garden Spot Performing Arts, by playing in the pit for the spring musical. She says, “it’s a family, it’s a tight knit group.” Being in theater allowed her to have fun, make friends and develop her creativity.
When asked if she’s stressed about all her extracurricular activities, Santiago’s answer is, “I work under stress pretty well…I actually like being stressed.” This statement is quite unconventional since most teenagers would rather have a more relaxed day to day schedule. But for Santiago, stress is a motivation not only to do more but to contribute more to our GS community. Plus, she says, when a project or activity wraps up, there’s an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, and “it just feels good, like this weight’s been lifted off of you.”

Santiago admits that it can sometimes be hard for kids to acknowledge their faith in a public school. But she surrounds herself with people who share the same faith, and she knows what she stands for. Matthew 19:26 is a Bible verse that resonates with her: “Basically it speaks to not relying on myself but putting
my trust in Him.” After graduation, Santiago hopes
