WATER
How could we live without water? If plants wilt, people wish for rain. I can’t think of anything more necessary. We need it for plants and animals. A cool glass of water quenches the thirst. For the well to become dry would be a burden. We’d have to carry water from the spring. That would be harder than carrying coal from the cellar. Today people senselessly waste water. To carry it all, they wouldn’t have time. They only have to open a faucet, that’s why. We collected rain water in barrels. Today each child has his own bath water. All our smaller children washed in one tub of water. The smallest bathed first, according to size. If the

water got too cool, Mom added more hot water. People enjoy playing on as well as in water. Some enjoy boating, others swim. For water pleasure, go to familiar places. Unless we are careful, we could lose our lives.
***
On July 14, 1987, “die Anna vun Bannwill” wrote us that a “recent rash of thunderstorms” prompted her to write WASSER. She is quite right when she says: “I feel it is something we take for granted until we have a drought.” While Anna enjoys her automatic washer, she has reservations about all that water going down the drain into the sewer. She concludes: “To the conservative Pennsylvania German, it seems a waste, even though I wouldn’t want to go back to the old methods.”
***
We chose WASSER for this week to underscore the heat wave and drought which has been visited upon us this summer of 1988. The time is already upon us when Americans will have to learn to conserve water and not take it for granted. The older we get the oftener we are reminded of the traditional conservative ways of the Pennsylvania Dutch, a lifestyle which was conservative in the best sense of the word. We used only as much as we needed and “conserved” the rest for future need. Our prayer is that our Old Order Brethren will be able to preserve their conservative lifestyle and not let themselves be pushed from the land!!!

A sling and a stone.
Author: Wenger
Scripture: 1st Samuel 17:50 “So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone.”
This account of David’s victory over Goliath is full of zeal for God and practical lessons for the spiritual life. It’s no wonder God said of David, “He was a man after God’s own heart.” Let’s get right to it. Think of it! The entire army of Israel was facing off with this giant who taunted Israel and her God. Let’s look at the scripture account.
“Then a champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was six cubits and a span in height
(9’ 8” tall), and he had a bronze helmet on his head. He wore a bronze coat of mail weighing five thousand shekels (156 lbs.) and he had armor of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels (15 lbs.). In addition, his shield bearer went before him” (1st Samuel 17:47).
“And Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ‘Why do you come out and array yourselves for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me. If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But, if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and labor for us.’
Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day! Give me a man to fight!’ On hearing the words of the Philistine, Saul and all the Israelites were

dismayed and greatly afraid. This went on for forty days morning and evening” (1st Samuel 17:811).
Ignore sarcasm, false accusations and criticism. David ignored his brother’s sarcasm and false accusations. His brother even presumed to know the motives of David’s heart. Apparently God knew the condition of David’s heart and his motives. Never fear false accusations and verbal assaults. David didn’t return
evil for evil, he just ignored his brother’s attempt to belittle him. Let’s look at his brother Eliab’s statement: “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart, you have come down to see the battle!” Of course, David wanted to see the battle, why not. It’s good that he did. David was just obeying what his father commanded him.

Be bold, be courageous, and ignore the stone throwers. Persecution is part and parcel of discipleship. It’s interesting that this criticism comes from his own family. Don’t think that to be strange, Christ said, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own home town.” Real discipleship means we have to be prepared to accept being marginalized, criticized and persecuted. Matthew 5:11, 12 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Guard your heart, and keep your motives pure. David’s motive was righteous; no one else made any kind of statement like this, “Just who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” Jesus
states that what comes out of our mouth reveals what is in our heart. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:4). David was jealous for his God. We should feel the same when others use the name of the Lord our God in vain. It should bother us. Yes, David did ask what would be done for the one who defeats the giant, but it was customary in that day to make an offer as Saul did. Gifts don’t matter much if you aren’t alive to receive them. The description of Saul and all of the rest of the army was that they were all afraid, very afraid. Remember, this was going on for 40 days, morning and evening. That was plenty of time for someone to come forward, but no one did… only David. David’s motives were pure and God blessed him in victory. God looks at the heart and not on the outward appearance.
We will continue our study from “A sling and a stone.”

Family Undertakes A Three-Generation, 334-Mile Bicycle Trip
Although a little apprehensive at first, Jane Nolt of Bowmansville felt honored when her granddaughter, Megan Rank of Strasburg, asked her to go on a 334mile bike ride with her and her mother, Connie Rank, from Pittsburgh to Washington DC. Connie and Megan were planning this trip to celebrate Megan’s high school graduation, and Connie and her husband Fred’s final year of homeschooling their three children. “What Grandmother wouldn’t want to do something special like that with her daughter and granddaughter?” Jane says. Although she was a little nervous about a grandma in her 70s pedaling her bike 35 to 45 miles a day for eight days, with the encouragement of her husband, Wilmer, she agreed to do it. They would be riding on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a rail trail, from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, then the C&O Canal Towpath from Cumberland to Washington, DC.
The original plan was for Wilmer to ride, as well. However, in order to simplify the logistics, they decided to tent camp in campgrounds and have Wilmer transport them and their bikes to the trail each day. With the help of the “Trail Guide, Official Guide to Traveling the C&O Canal Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage,” they made their plans – where they would camp, and set pins in Google Maps at the begin/ end points for each day’s ride. The guidebook was an indispensable resource for

planning the trip, with a chapter addressing questions such as: What kind of bike do I need? Is there cell phone coverage? How about bathrooms? Am I going to get wet or muddy? What should I wear? What if my bike breaks? Also included were detailed maps of trail towns and canal towns, showing locations of motels, restaurants, bike shops, etc., as well as a waterproof map of the GAP and the C&O.
The detailed milebymile section of the guide provided valuable info of all points of interest along the trail.
(Connie used this resource to print out daily lists to have handy so they wouldn’t miss anything.)
They began their ride on Sunday, July 13 with Wilmer driving them and their bikes from their campsite at Ohiopyle State Park to the western end of the GAP, at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny River in downtown Pittsburgh. Wilmer, as he oftentimes did
on the following days, rode along with them for a while, before returning to their pickup truck and enclosed trailer. It was a hot, humid week with afternoon thundershowers. “After getting caught in a drenching afternoon thunderstorm the first day,” relates Jane, “we tried to get an early start after that to avoid riding in the midafternoon heat and thunderstorms.”
The next Sunday afternoon, July 20, Wilmer joined them at mile 4 on the C&O Canal Towpath to ride with them the final 4 miles of the route to the Zero Mile Marker, and then on to the Lincoln Memorial at the western end of the National Mall.
They planned their trip so that they could easily cover the distance each day and have time to look around, stop and take pictures, and enjoy their surroundings. “There was so much to experience!” exclaims Jane.
“Whether traveling over high viaducts, biking through tunnels, exploring small towns, or imagining what life was like 150 years ago for a family living in one of the many C&O Canal lockhouses, as mules pulled the canal boat, or barge into the lock.”
“Doing this ride with my daughter and granddaughter was an awesome experience. There were a few challenges, like when my bike lock jammed and I couldn’t get it open, getting caught in a thunderstorm with trees all around and no shelter in sight, lifting our bikes over trees blown down on the trail in recent storms, and some
times dealing with muddy conditions on the C&O Canal Towpath. There were a couple scary moments, like accidently running over a snake, and when a startled deer bolted across the trail inches in front of my bike.
But I recall many more awesome moments: riding in silence, enjoying the cool breeze rippling my shirt as the morning sun begins to break through the mist, looking down from a high bridge on a view seen only in years past by those on passenger trains, realizing how blessed I am to spend this time making memories with my daughter and granddaughter!”

Congressman Smucker Visits Local Nonprofit In Ephrata
On Monday, July 28, Congressman Lloyd Smucker visited Art of Recycle (AoR), a 501c3 nonprofit in Ephrata. Expecting a small shop, he found instead a large community center with a craft
activity spaces, and a free resource center serving educators and nonprofits across several states. Smucker toured the facility, meeting staff, volunteers, and visiting teachers. He learned how AoR operates without grants, relying on community donations— some sold in the craft store, others shared with schools and nonprofits. Store revenue covers the center’s costs.
In 2024, AoR sought

Smucker’s help after years of IRS delays with Employee Retention Credit (ERC) payments. His office intervened, securing release of funds that the organization needed to pay debts from pandemic shutdowns. Cofounder Chelas Montanye thanked Smucker’s team for their swift action.
During the visit, teachers shared their challenges in accessing classroom resources. One, Rebecca Jensen from Shrewsbury Christian Academy, explained she traveled over an hour for supplies to support 140 students as music returns to her school postpandemic. AoR staff member Darlene Prutzman highlighted the nonprofit’s mission: communities working together to solve problems and ease burdens on government. She guided Smucker through the center

and emphasized the importance of shared resources.
Before leaving, Smucker asked how he could further assist. Montanye replied, “Tell people about Art of Recycle. We have much to offer schools and organizations in need.”
