Terre Hill Historical Plans Cigar Industry Trolley Tour

The Terre Hill Historical Society is planning a twentystop trolley tour through Terre Hill from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20. You have the option of a self-guided tour using a map or riding the trolley with departure times of 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., or 3:15 p.m. There is no cost to
attend this tour, however, donations will be welcomed. To register, call the Historical Society at 610273-3109 before Saturday, September 13. There will be some historical photos shown and narration along the route.
In 1880, Terre Hill produced 340,000 cigars a
week and it was the town’s main industry, as well as the dominant occupation throughout the region. The cigar industry ran from about 1848 to 1927. During that time period, thirty percent of the work force in Terre Hill were women. In the cigar industry in Terre Hill, 10 to 30 employees was considered a small operation, and 300 employees was considered large. Along with cigar makers, there were cigar box makers, packing operations and warehouses.
Shown in the photo, from left to right, are Deb Heckman, Curator and Process Researcher; Carol Ann, Historical Society Secretary; and Rod Hartman, Curator. Special thanks to Greg Hartman for investing his time to research for this event. The memorabilia shown is part of the program.

Get up, Get up

Proverbs 24:16 - “A righteous man may fall seven times and rise again…”
According to the context, the person in consideration is righteous and we must conclude that this instance is not a result of sin, but calamity, trouble and affliction of some sort. We can scarcely talk about falling and rising up again without considering our good brother Job. In Job 1:1, we see that Job was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil. We are then told that Job was the greatest of all the families of the East and his wealth in livestock is cataloged (Job 1:2-3). Then, tragedy struck, and in about 24 seconds, Job lost his livestock, servants and children. When reading Job’s account of his calamity… remember that it says while he (the servant)
was yet speaking, another servant came and related the next calamity, one after another. If you read just the servant’s words, in less than 60 seconds, it was all gone. Not only that… but in two instances, it was the result of natural causes, so to speak… wind and fire from heaven. Certainly Job would attribute these two directly to God Himself, and yet it says that Job’s first response was worship. Then, Job arose and tore his robe, shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said, “Naked I came into this world, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:20, 21).
Bad things happen to good and righteous people all the time. How would we respond to this kind of devastation? We most often don’t know the purpose in these trials and tribulations. Job didn’t. He never got to peek behind the curtain to understand why God did this. I am not sure, even if we know the purpose of our pain, that the answer would

satisfy. As believers now in the church age, we can look at scripture and know God’s purpose in Job’s case. If the loss of everything dear to Job isn’t enough, Satan then struck him from head to toe with painful boils. Yet even with this, Job said, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity? In all this; Job did not sin with his lips” (Job 2:10).
In the closing verses 42:10 of Job we read, “And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends.” Indeed, the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. This is one of the most arresting and illuminating verses in all of scripture; when he prayed for his friends God restored Job’s friends said, over and over, his troubles were from some sin Job was not confessing. To be honest, it would take me a while before I would be praying for them. This isn’t the case with Job. The shortest route through devastating trials is concern for others, rather than self. It’s not about you; yes, even in trials and pain.

The reason Job rose again is because he first focused on God and sincere worship. Secondly, it was others. We can see this exact order in Job’s life… “one who feared God and shunned evil.” In Job 1:5, we read in regard to his sons… he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings, according to the number of them all, for Job said, “‘it may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts’” thus Job did regularly.” When calamity strikes, remember, worship first others second, and we will rise up, even though we fall.

To say all we wish to say. Some are large, some small, And occasionally we become entangled.
Words are curious things; They have strength and power, But many are weak and useless And have no effect.
Take the rooster on the manure pile, That crows every morning. When one could sleep longer,

The robin sings so beautifully And gives us spring joy But when the pigs holler terribly, It really depresses us.
The mocking bird knows all; He needs no songbook. He knows all bird tongues, Knows where they build their nests.
The horse standing in the barn Knows when guests are coming. He neighs to the other horse And gives him a mighty welcome.
The minister preaches in the chancel, That we behave ourselves properly. And if we don’t do that, We won’t get to heaven.
The teacher teaches us in school With knowledge from A to Z. And often when we’re old, we wish, We had obeyed him.

The lawyer is a clever fellow; He advises one well.
The judge, when we don’t behave, Has to throw us in jail.
The auctioneer sells so much; He cries loud and long.
The doctor tells what brings health, Because the sick are always afraid.
Mother has so much patience: Helpful are her words. Dad is stricter and course, His words have a bite.
Therefore I say: Watch your words! They bring joy and tears. Sometimes one says without thinking Things that are not intended.
