Terre Hill Days Community Festival Happens This Week!

The annual Terre Hill Days Community Festival is upon us and it will be held this week Thursday, July 13 through Sunday, July 16. The annual event features free nightly musical entertainment, as well as food, children’s activities,

games and carnival rides.

Over a dozen food vendors will be in attendance with an assortment of delicious food. Admission and parking are free. The event benefits the Terre Hill Park.

Highlights this year include: oldies band The

Nomads on Thursday night, Nashville recording artist Jess Zimmerman on Friday night, and the Josh Squared Band on Saturday. An Arts & Crafts fair will also be held Saturday morning, and the event wraps up with fireworks Saturday night at

10:00 p.m. Sunday’s events include a community church service and a picnic in the park with entertainment at noon (rides and food are not operating on Sunday).

Reinholds VFW Makes Generous Contributions To Fire Companies

Samuel “Sam” C. Sherk

Samuel “Sam” C. Sherk, 81, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Lyle C. and Eleanor E. (Bemesderfer) Sherk and was the husband of Connie Sherk, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

During his working years, Sam worked as a trade associate for PennAg Industries Association.

He enjoyed playing the piano and woodcarving. An avid outdoorsman, Sam loved hunting, fishing, and spending time in the Outer Banks with his family. His passion for the outdoors included acting as a former president and member of the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association.

Additionally, Sam was a hunter safety instructor for

10 years. Sam was a dedicated member of the community and had served as a chairman of the Future Farmers of America Foundation and was a member of Friendly Circle. He also served as an Ephrata borough Councilman.

Robert (Bob) Nelson Smith, 82, husband of Audrey Bazzoni Smith, Lititz, passed away on Wednesday, June 28.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons: Robert Owen Smith, husband of Colleen Gallagher Smith, and Dwight David Smith; and four grandchildren.

Back To School Backpacks Distribution

On Tuesday, August 1, REAL Life Community Services, in partnership with UGI, will distribute 100 backpacks to Cocalico School District students to help prepare them for this coming school year.

Volunteers will be handing out the backpacks, which are loaded with folders, notebooks, markers, crayons, pencils, pens and glue sticks, everything you need to succeed in school, at the National Night Out in Reamstown Park. This is the fifth year that UGI worked with REAL Life Community Services to provide for children. Thank you to UGI for being such an amazing part of the northern Lancaster County community!

LACH MIT EM BECKAKARL VON WESTERHOI!

A few months ago, we discovered that the late Stephen Schweizer, who had served as a minister for ca. 45 years in (German) Reformed churches of this area, was a native of Westerheim, West Germany. Stephen Schweitzer served for many years as the Reformed minister of the Muddy Creek Charge and conducted services in English and in German. We, of course, are too young to remember the late “Parre” Schweizer, but our parents and grandparents remembered him. Stephen Schweitzer was the father of the late (Rev. Dr.) Martin Schweizer and the late Marcella Schweizer, M.D. We remember the German sermons Martin Schweizer, Ph.D. preached in the old Muddy Creek Union Church, although we were too young to understand them. We will never forget Marcella playing the piano for the Sunday School sessions of the former First Reformed Church in Ephrata, where as children we attended Sunday School. Jim Sharp was one of our beloved teachers. Sally Fry Wolf was another.

When we examined the Stephen and Martin Schweizer folder at the E and R Historical Society Library at the Seminary in Lancaster, we discovered that Stephen had

been born in the town of Westerheim in Germany and had come to this country as a five year old child. As a result, we wrote to the church office in Westerheim requesting additional information on the Schweizer family. On March 1, a 40 page booklet entitled LACH EIT EM BECKAKARL VON WESTERHOI! (Laugh with Karl Rauschmaier of Westerheim!) came to us from Mrs. Herlinde Moll of Westerheim. Mrs. Moll’s great-grandfather, Rupert Schweizer, was a brother to Stepehn Schweizer.

In this ECK, we will reproduce in the Swabian dialect of Westerheim a few of the jokes recorded in this booklet. This is the dialect that Stephen Schweizer would have learned as a child in Westerheim. Since he grew up in Pennsylvania, he probably learned Pennsylvania Dutch here. ***

The Cross of Christ

Perhaps you are reading these lines but do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We want you to know that life begins at Calvary! To illustrate, consider for a moment the vertical beam of the Cross. It represents the way through which the broken

relationship between God and the sinner can be restored. The way is the Lord Jesus Christ. The Savior Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6).

In your heart of hearts you know that you are not right with God. Sin has separated you from the Holy One of Heaven and has made a mess of your life! It’s left you living in fear of death and the judgment to come. I know, I’ve been there! Salvation is not found in what you can do to make yourself acceptable to God, but what He has already done for you at Calvary. The only way to restore

your broken relationship with God is to believe that Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again the third day (I Cor. 15:3,4).

As the song says, “When He was on the Cross, you were on His mind.” The moment you place your faith in Christ’s finished work,

you will be forgiven of all your sins: past, present, and future. Keep in mind, too, that the day Christ died all of your sins were yet future. Nothing in this life is free, someone paid for it! This is also true of God’s provision of salvation; Christ paid for it with His precious blood. Today, God is offering salvation as a free gift to all who place their trust in His Son. When you believe the gospel, the burden of your sins will be lifted. You will for the first time in your life, experience “peace with God” through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1). Once this relationship is established, it is permanent because you are sealed by the Holy Spirit until the redemption of the

purchased possession (Eph. 1:13,14).

We might liken the horizontal beam of the Cross to our relationship with those around us. Our lives touch the lives of others. God has believers in every walk of life so that those who are still outside of Christ might have the opportunity to hear the good news. This horizontal beam also represents the importance of reaching out to our brothers and sisters in Christ who have yet to see the revelation of the Mystery (Rom. 16:25; Eph. 3:8,9), which raises an important question: when was the last time you shared Paul’s gospel with a Christian friend?

21st Annual Rothsville Community Day

Plans are in the works for the 21st annual Rothsville Community Day to be held Saturday, September 16 at Forney Field, Church Street, Rothsville. The day will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run/Walk sponsored by Wellspan Family & Pediatric Medicine-Rothsville.

Registration for the run begins at 9:00 a.m. at Forney Field. Proceeds from the registration fee will benefit Wellspan’s “Patient Support Fund,” which provides assistance to patients in need of nonmedical items and services to help them achieve and maintain better health.

All of the events of the day are free, and will include kid’s games and activities, traditional competitions, and food. The popular helicopter candy drop, sponsored by the

Rothsville Ambulance Association, will take place at 10:45 a.m. The barrel train ride will be returning. Entertainment will be supplied by Phredd McNaughton and the DKers. Door prizes from local businesses will be given away throughout the day. More details will be announced in early September. The event is organized by Rothsville area churches (Jerusalem Lutheran, Millport Mennonite, St. Paul’s E.C. and Salem United Methodist), in conjunction with the Rothsville Fire Company and the Rothsville Ambulance Association.

Akron Lions Club Awards Members

At a recent meeting of the Akron Lions Club Lion Craig Beamesderfer was presented with the Lion of the Year award for all he does for the club. Lion Craig is very active and is the treasurer of the club of which he was busy this past year in writing out $45,315 in various checks donated to the organizations that the club supports.

Lion Brenda Fetter was presented with the Melvin Jones award for her dedication to the Akron Lions. Lion Brenda has been in charge of sandwich making for their toasted cheeseburgers since 2017, has been President, and is involved with their food

collections. The Melvin Jones Award was named after the Lions founder in 1917.

Both these Lion members are a big asset to the club and help to make the Akron Lions function as well as it

does.

* Use the measuring cups when adding detergent to the washer. It avoids using too much, which can get costly. And it will avoid residual soap left in the fabric.

* If you use airconditioning, use a programmable thermostat. You can set it to a higher temperature overnight, when it’s naturally cooler, and have it cool down the house right about the time you’ll get home, so there’s no wasted energy cooling a house with no one in it.

* When putting woodystem flowers, such as roses, in a vase, cut the stem diagonally and whack with a small mallet. It will absorb water much better this way.

you make the first batch, go ahead and portion out the remaining dough by teaspoons onto a cold cookie sheet. Freeze as balls, and then replace them in the container they came from. Refreeze. Now you can take out only as many cookies as you would like to make, and cook them straight from frozen.

* Spray old artificial flowers with hair spray to make the look fresh and vibrant.

personal items. Glass jars can be cleaned and labels removed. Paperboard boxes can be custom trimmed and covered with leftover wrapping paper or wallpaper. Paper milk cartons can be cleaned with soap and water, dried thoroughly then painted to hold a variety of items. Don’t overlook the many possibilities in a piece of recycling or trash.

* Use plain household vinegar to kill grass that grows in the cracks of walkways and driveways.

* “Use bathroom fans appropriately. Make sure to turn them off. They vent air to the outside, and that includes your paid-for air conditioning, too. Close the bathroom door after showering and let the fan run for about 10 minutes.

Good Samaritan Services Breaks Ground For New Office Building

Good Samaritan Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to responding to homelessness and poverty, celebrated the groundbreaking for a new office building in Ephrata with a ceremony on Thursday, June 29. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall or winter of 2023.

Joanne A. McVaugh

Joanne A. McVaugh, 87, of Denver, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at Spruce Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She was born in Denver to the late William B. and Ellen (Seiberling) Lutz and was the wife of the late Nelson C. McVaugh Sr.

Joanne was a member of St. John’s UCC, Denver. She loved dancing, ceramics, and bell choir at church. She taught Sunday school and helped with Meals on Wheels.

During her working years, Joanne worked as a factory worker for Woolworth.

Joanne is survived by two

numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Lutz and a sister, Florence Windish.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 PM on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut Street, Denver, followed by a memorial service at 2 PM with Pastor Brad Haws officiating. Inurement will take place in the Fairview Cemetery Annex.

Cheryl A. Englerth

Cheryl A. Englerth, 75, of Ephrata, PA, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Neffsville Nursing and Rehab.

Born in Coatesville, PA, Cheryl was a daughter of the late Anna L. Kurtz Grow and Walter F. Grow, Sr. She was a member of the Scott High School Class of ’64 and was married to her loving husband, Charles L. Englerth, Sr. on October 16, 1965.

Grow, and Donald Grow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by a brother, William Grow. Funeral services will be held at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St. Ephrata, PA 17522 on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Friends will be received before the service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Place of interment will be Memory Gardens, Ephrata, PA.

her family and spending time with them.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: Dawn M. Nelson, Cathy L. (Ray) Huber, Charles L. (Lori) Englerth, Jr., and Cristina L. (Don) Updike; eight grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; one sister, Linda Grow; three brothers: Walter Grow, Jr., Robert
