The Lancaster County Office of Aging, Lititz Senior Center, located at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 East Market Street, Lititz, is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with lunch served at noon. There is no cost to attend.

The Center serves independent Lancaster County seniors ages 60 and up from Ephrata, Rothsville, Akron, Neffsville and Lititz areas. Ephrata is also served by van service. Reservations for lunch and transportation must be made by 10:00 a.m., one day in advance, by calling the Center at 717626­2800.

This is the 4th year for the Bowmansville Free Community Event, which is sponsored by local churches. Everyone is invited to come out and have a good time, and you can leave your wallet at home! Denver Lions Student Of The Month

The Denver Lions Club has recognized Madison Rodgers, of Reinholds, as student of the Month for March 2024. Madison is the daughter of Jenni and Shane Rodgers.

Beyond her studies at Cocalico High school, Madison is active on the Soccer Team, Wind Ensemble, Choir, Symphonic Band and Tri­M. She is an honoree of the National Honor Society, Global Scholars and the Spanish Honors Society. Madison was recognized as student of the month in various subjects and as a First Team all­Star in the Lancaster­Lebanon League for 2023. She is also a member of the All­County Band from 2022­2024.

Madison is affiliated with Calvary Church and her community activities include volunteering for the Peter’s Porch food program, and helping with the Denver Math Night. She is a STEM Club helper, and a tutor for

elementary students.

Future plans include attending Thiel Collage to study early childhood education, and play soccer, with a goal of coaching on the elementary, middle, or high school level.

As of Wednesday, May 15, the Weather Channel reported 701 “confirmed” tornadoes in the United States. This is above normal averages. On May 30, 1985, 19 tornadoes touched down in Pennsylvania on that single day killing over 65 citizens. Tornadoes and high wind events are serious threats to the area.

It is critical that family members and employees of businesses know what to do. A Tornado “Watch” means it could occur and is usually issued several hours in advance. A Tornado “Warning” means it has been spotted or observed on radar.

Immediately, get to the lowest floor of the building. Seek out rooms with few or no windows. If there is no basement, go to interior windowless rooms such as closets, restrooms etc. If possible, get low to the floor on your knees and elbows with your hands or a pillow covering your head.

Keep in mind, that severe thunderstorms can have “straight” line winds with the same velocity as a tornado without the rotation. The same protective action should be taken. In the aftermath of a high wind event, check for injuries and be cautious of down energized wires, as well as building collapse. Call 911 if you need assistance.

Records show that Lancaster County has a tornado every two and a half years on average. Adults, as well as children, need to know what to do. If you want additional information on tornado and storm safety, contact Randy Gockley (Ephrata Borough Emergency Management Coordinator) at 717­4669050.

Kay L. (Gainer) Heagy Obituaries

Kay L. (Gainer) Heagy, 83, of Lititz, PA, entered into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 17, 2024. Born in Manheim, PA, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Sherer) and Harvey Gainer. Kay was the devoted wife of the late Jackson “Jack” Heagy.

A committed member of Brickerville United Lutheran Church, Kay was actively involved in the church community, contributing her time and energy to various activities and initiatives.

Kay had a zest for life and a variety of interests. She loved to travel, especially to the beach, where she found tranquility and joy. A lover of chocolate, Kay always had a sweet treat nearby. She also had a fondness for cardinals, collecting items that featured the vibrant bird. However,

Cody, Alec, and Bree, and a loving great-grandmother to Luke, Ben, Jackson, Elias, Ava, and Kai, with two more great-grandchildren on the way. Kay is also survived by her companion, Gordon Shelly.

Donald Reamer Beck, 100, Lititz, passed away on Sunday, May 5.

He is survived by a daughter, Judy, wife of Leon Lobos, Millersville; and a grandchild.

This is the third week of our Alice Ziemer Brice Festival, which occupies the entire month of April. Knowing that Alice Ziemer loved to travel, one could expect a poem about the sea, although such poems are rare in Pennsylvania German literature.

Alice Ziemer gives a vivid description of the sights and sounds one could hear on a steamer crossing the Atlantic. It is unfortunate that these days most of us have to travel by air instead of by ship. We’ve just about lost the passenger ships, just as we’ve almost lost the passenger trains. This is progress? (We won’t even discuss the loss of the trolley. What a marvelous way to travel from Lancaster to Ephrata and then through Reamstown and Adamstown and finally

Cauliflower

Casserole

Rosemary Heth, Glenmoore cooking spray

3 lbs. cauliflower, trimmed and cut into bite-size florets

8 oz. softened cream cheese

8 oz. container sour cream

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1½ cups sharp cheddar

cheese (6 oz.), divided

1½ cups pepper Jack cheese (6 oz.), divided 8 bacon slices, cooked and coarsely chopped, divided ¼ cup chopped chives

Preheat oven to 425°F. Coat a 9”x13” baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside. Fill a large pot with a steamer basket, and fill with 1” of water. Add cauliflower florets, and cover. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce heat to medium and steam until cauliflower is very tender, about 20

minutes. Remove from heat; let stand 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, stir together cream cheese and sour cream in a large bowl until very smooth, about one minute. Fold in garlic powder, one cup each of the cheddar and pepper Jack, half the bacon, and three tablespoons of the chives. Fold in warm cauliflower. Spoon into prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining bacon, cheddar and pepper Jack.

Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted and

top starts to brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining one tablespoon of chives. Serve hot.

2 cups frozen peas, uncooked

1 cup diced celery

Dressing:

1 cup sour cream

CauliflowerBroccoli Salad

Half head cauliflower, chopped

Half head broccoli, chopped

1 large sweet onion, sliced and separated into rings

Buffalo Cauliflower Bites

½ cup mayonnaise

½ package ranch dressing mix (use dry)

Combine cauliflower, broccoli and onion. Chill for several hours, covered with plastic wrap. Add peas and celery.

Combine dressing ingredients and mix well. Pour over vegetables and toss.

½ teaspoon lemon juice ranch or blue cheese dressing for serving

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Grease a baking sheet with cooking spray or line it with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk flour, water, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper until batter is smooth. Add cauliflower to batter and toss to coat.

Spread cauliflower onto the prepared baking sheet in a single later with space between them. Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, about 20 to 25 minutes, flipping over halfway through.

In another small bowl, combine the hot sauce, melted butter and lemon juice until well blended. Brush the buffalo sauce mixture on the cauliflower. Return to the oven and bake until they start to brown, about 15 minutes.

Serve hot with ranch dressing.

Roasted Cauliflower

“Delicious! Makes a great side dish, or I like to put it in the food processor and pulse a few times and add it to a stir fry.”

1 whole head of cauliflower

1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil

¼ teaspoon sea salt

Cut cauliflower into florets and place in a bowl. Add olive oil and stir to coat. Add salt.

Place on a cookie sheet with sides. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cauliflower Almondine

1 large head of cauliflower

1 can cream of mushroom soup

¼ cup blanched slivered almonds

1 tablespoon melted butter

2 tablespoons breadcrumbs

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Cook the cauliflower until barely tender. Arrange in a casserole.

Heat the soup and stir in the almonds. Pour over the cauliflower. Top with the butter and breadcrumbs mixed.

Bake 10 to 20 minutes.

Beef Stir Fry

Mary Ann Dell, East Earl

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon corn starch

1 tablespoon water

¼ teaspoon salt

½ lb. 1/8” beef strips (cut while partially frozen)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

¾ cup beef broth or bouillon

3 cups cauliflower florets, halved

2 cups diagonally sliced

celery pieces

1 medium onion, sliced

1 cup thinly sliced carrots

1 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

Combine soy sauce, corn starch, water and salt. Add meat and let stand while preparing vegetables.

Heat oil in a large skillet. Add meat and stir fry until it loses its pink color. Add broth slowly. Stir until it boils. Add vegetables and mix well. Cover and simmer 7 to 9 minutes or until vegetables are tender crisp.

Scripture: Job 40:8“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified.”

The context of this verse is that Job felt God’s hand upon his life was too severe with the calamity he endured. Job felt that God was unjust in His treatment as he states in Job 27:2, “As surely as God lives, who has deprived me

of justice, the Almighty, who has embittered my soul.” To be honest, all of us would think the same if we were in Job’s shoes. Job’s friends maintained Job’s problems were a result of sin, pride and self­righteousness. This was not the case as we know. Remember, Job was an upright man; “God said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is none like him on the earth; a blameless and upright man, who fears God and shuns evil?’” (Job 1:8).

God’s rebuke to Job is, “Would you indeed annul My judgment and condemn Me to justify yourself.” This rebuke to Job seemed to be out of place, but it gives God

his rightful sovereignty and glory. It always amazes me that Job was never told why this trial took place. Would it really make a difference if we knew why we endure painful trials and suffering and God’s reason behind it? Would it change anything? I doubt it. We would just condemn God by thinking we know better. In previous chapters, God compared His unlimited knowledge that was demonstrated in the creation of the world to Job’s limited knowledge. God’s rebuke is first to Job, to his friends, to us and all other readers of scripture yet to come. Would we indeed annul God’s judgment? How do we condemn God to justify ourselves? The unbeliever will often condemn God and justify self by saying, “If God loves people, how can He allow suffering and sickness in the world? If God loves people, why would he send them to hell? If God is just, why is there so much injustice in the world?” Sometimes these are honest questions from an honest skeptic, and that’s ok. Most often though, when you hear these questions, it is from an unbeliever who seeks to condemn God, and by doing so, justifies themselves. Doing this,

God says, “It’s appointed unto man once to die, after that the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). The unbeliever says there are many ways to God not just one. But God says, “Neither is their salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven, given among men, by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). So, the unbeliever is essentially saying they know better. They seek to annul God’s judgment and condemn Him and by doing so, to remove themselves from any responsibility to acknowledge God and thereby any responsibility to obey Him. Move over God, now there are two of us.

Lincoln Fire Company Outreach Visit

The Lincoln Fire Company will have a Public Outreach Visit at the Charity Gardens Agape Drive Park in Clay Township on Thursday, May 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Residents from Charity Gardens, Country Side Estates, Wyndale, Lincoln

Gardens and other nearby developments are invited to stop by.

All apparatus will be on display and adults and children are invited to come and meet their local volunteers. There will be

free handouts and demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. There will be applications for anyone interested in joining the fire company.

The Fire Station is located at 38 South Market Street and provides first due service to eastern Clay and Western Ephrata Borough and Township. They responded to 408 calls in 2023.

Friendly Circle Meeting

The Friendly Circle held their May meeting on Tuesday, May 14 at Akron Community Church. President Carol Landis welcomed everyone and conducted the meeting. Elaine Egerton and Joan Shelly greeted 60 members and three guests to the meeting. President Landis started the meeting with The Friendly Circle’s theme song “The More We get Together” followed by the “Pledge of Alligence” and “God Bless America.” They also sang “Bringing in the Sheaves” and “Give My Regards to Broadway,” accompanied by Jim Kimmel on the piano.

The devotional leader was Pastor David Miller from New Joy Church in Ephrata. Pastor Dave’s lesson was about ‘Transitioning,’ such as when you move to a new house, new state, going to college, marriage, having children, grandchildren, starting over, new friendslife is full of transitions. People ultimately don’t like change. God wants people to change - the old has passed away and newness has begun. Christ changes people’s desires. The Lord is your change agent. Take opportunities to talk to others while waiting in line at the grocery store or out for a walk. Pray in the car and allow the Lord to minister to you. Those times can bring joy to you and to others. Christ never changes. He always loves us. Have courage ask God to intercept when you slip or mess up. Trust in Christ. Pastor Dave also gave the blessing before the meal.

Following the delicious meal, they were entertained by Nick Viscuso, Keyboardist. Nick has been entertaining for over 45 years. He resides in Gap. He started playing classical piano at age six and switched to organ and keyboards ten years later. He plays fully orchestrated keyboards as a solo one man band artist. Nick specializes in music from the 40s to current pop standards. Nick entertained them with, “Lady and the Tramp,” Elvis’s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You,” “Mack the Knife,” “Stranger’s in the Night,” “In the Mood,” Paul Anka’s “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” “New York New York” and Chuck Berry’s “Johnny Be Good,” plus more. Everyone enjoyed his music as they clapped and sang along.

The business of the meeting was held with Secretary Libby Rupp reading the minutes from April 2024 and Treasurer Debbie Moyer giving the Treasurer’s report as of April 2024.

Pat Bunting led the singing of three May birthdays and one April anniversary, Theda and Richard Raffauf, 32 years.

Grace Gerhart reported sending one get well card. Sandy Butzer reported 60 members present, plus three guests. She also introduced new members Jean Lausch, Barbara Mahon, Marilyn Onest and Mary Pentz. Napkins were donated by The Friendly Circle.

The trip committee has two trips planned for 2024.

* On May 27, 1831, trapper-explorer Jedediah Smith, who established the South Pass across the Rocky Mountains in modern western Wyoming as a well-

known and heavily traveled route for fur trappers, was riding alone when he was attacked and killed by a hunting party of Comanche Native Americans on the Santa Fe Trail.

* On May 28, 1983, Irene Cara’s song “Flashdance (What a Feeling),” from the “Flashdance” movie

soundtrack, reached the top of the U.S. pop charts and helped push the film to the No. 3 spot on that year’s total box-office revenue list. It also proved to be the biggest hit of Cara’s career.

* On May 30, 1899, amateur bandit Pearl Hart and her drifter boyfriend, Joe Boot, held up an Arizona

stagecoach, making away with over $400 in cash. Although discovered and sentenced to prison, neither served their full term, and Hart was pardoned by the governor in 1902, living out the rest of her life in relative obscurity.

* On May 31, 1970, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale off the coast of Casma, Peru, in the Pacific Ocean caused an avalanche traveling at over 100 miles per hour that buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca, killing an estimated 50,000 people and making it the worst natural disaster ever recorded in the country’s history.

Fishing Rodeo For The Handicapped

On Saturday, May 11, the Garden Spot Lions Club held their annual Trout Fishing Rodeo for the Handicapped. Approximately 40 participants from Sunny Crest, Zerbe Sisters and Welsh Mountain nursing homes and others, enjoyed the beautiful, sunny spring morning besides the James Sensenig farm pond in Churchtown. Approximately 75 volunteers from Garden Spot Lions Club, Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop 172, and others assisted the handicapped fishermen. The PA Fish and Boat Commission issued a permit to the Lions Club to exempt the participants from licensing for the three-hour event.

The Horace Keller family contributed all fishing equipment including bait for the rodeo. The Beartown and Penn Dutch Sportsmen’s

Clubs stocked the pond with trout. The photo shows Lions Club President Stuart McLauchlan holding the catch of a smiling, proud “fisherwoman.”
