Girls On The Run Makes An Impact On Lives And Community

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is much more than running. Throughout the ten-week season, participants learn to embrace their inner strength, create meaningful conn-

ections with others, and make an impact on their communities all while finding joy in movement.

Elementary), Harper Drake, Coach Lindalee McAlanis and Addisyn Heimbach (participant from Denver Elementary). Not pictured are Callie Oleskowitz (participant), Coach Nicole Horst and Junior Coach Anna McGuire.

Participants practice twice a week to grow in key areas and develop essential life skills such as confidence, competence, caring, character, and connection. The conclusion of the season is the GOTR 5K, where participants are encouraged to go at their own pace, their happy pace. The goal is to do one’s personal best, not

compete against others. The 5K is designed to empower girls by giving them the opportunity to set and accomplish a goal. Successfully crossing the finish line provides a tangible sense of achievement, boosting their confidence and inspiring them to pursue other life goals.

As a part of each season, GOTR participants plan, create, and implement Community Impact Projects to make a difference in their communities using skills learned at GOTR like showing empathy, resolving conflict, and working as a team. As girls work together on their Community Impact Project, they discover invaluable lessons in the act of creating the project itself, as

well as what happens when teams work together to complete a goal. Community Impact Projects help girls realize the power we all have to make a positive contribution to the world. This year, the girls decided to raise money for the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) as their Community Impact Project.

This spring, there are three Girls on the Run sites hosted within the Cocalico School District. At these three sites, 58 girls have been lead through the season by 11 certified adult coaches, and eight certified junior coaches. Junior coaches are high school-age girls who support teams through coaching, and serving as youth mentors to the participants.

HIGH SCHOOL

I don’t know why it was called the high school, perhaps because we learned other languages. The building had only one story and some pupils quit before the end of the first term. At first, we were not quite comfortable in high school - having three rooms and teachers was different from a one-

room school. We had no choice. Our parents made us go. Although we already had had eight years in the country school, it was thought we needed more. We were compelled to take English. Between German and Latin we had our choice. We were convinced it would be beneficial because many English words were derived from Latin. In Geometry, the teacher drew forms with lines and encouraged me to learn it, but I was not impressed. So I switched to Agriculture, and even though I was a farmer’s daughter, I learned new things. I was not too impressed with Home Ec either. I preferred Mom’s way of doing thing. In Chemistry, they mixed things together that almost took one’s breath away. Had our cow stable smelled as bad, we would have been ashamed. Each year one subject related to Government. We were taught Civics and Problems of Democracy. With all the shenanigans in Washington and Harrisburg - plus all the mudslinging - it’s a shame.

High school or country school, I appreciated them both. That was the extent of my education, my career was housekeeping. Today I would advise young people to go further. It helps them to mature and become better informed. ***

Having written on the EE-SCHTUBB SCHUL, die Anna vun Bannwill turned to DIE HOCHSCHUL. Anna admits that she injected a bit of humor into DIE HOCHSCHUL. Of her school years she wrote on November 6, 1986, the day she wrote DIE HOCHSCHUL, “In spite of my flippant description of the subjects, I actually enjoyed high school and was graduated at the age of 15. It was a four year program at that time.” Un nau wisse mir ferwas die Anna so schmaert is!

We again flourish unser Deitscher Schtrohhut in the direction of Bannwill!!!

Consider Being A Living Organ Donor

There are so many people waiting for an organ donation. Please consider being a living organ donor. The gift is life changing. In search of a living liver donor – Joe Stoyanovitch, a lifelong member of the Lititz community, is in search of a living liver donor. He is a husband to his wife of 40 years, a father of two, and a grandfather of three. Following a cancer diagnosis in August of 2024 and months of tests and treatments, Joe has been approved for a liver transplant. His doctors have advised that a living donor is the best option for him. A living donor would allow

him to receive a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor at a time that is convenient for the donor

and would allow him to get to transplant before he may become too ill to receive one.

The National Liver Registry has helped Joe to develop a custom website to share his personal story and to spread the word to potential donors. The website also provides information about the living donor process. His website is: www.nkr.org/LW5982. By sharing his story, you can help to increase the number of people who may consider liver donation, as well as build awareness about the life-giving gift of living liver donation. 9 9 9

— Concerned Family

You’re not alone—this is a common question we hear from families. Start by watching for signs: Are everyday tasks becoming harder? Is the home falling into disrepair? Are there safety hazards or health concerns?

When these signs appear, it’s time to begin the conversation—with care and respect. Rather than pushing for change, try asking: What would make life easier? Have you considered a home that better suits your needs now and in the future?

That’s where we come in. As the Downsizing Duo, we specialize in senior transitions. Together we guide families through every step—from planning the move, sorting decades of belongings, and helping find the right next home.

You don’t have to do this alone. Reach out—we’re here to help with compassion, clarity, and a smart plan.

Scripture: Isaiah 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, everyone, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

It’s interesting to note that this prophecy was written about 700 years before Christ. Crucifixion wasn’t even a form of punishment at that time. Isaiah 53:5 reads, “But He was pierced through for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our peace fell upon Him and by His wounds we are healed.” These verses speak of the substitutionary death of our Lord. The Bible states that, “All have sinned and fallen

short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Continuing in Romans 3:10-12, “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” That pretty much includes everyone. It’s called the total depravity of man. Jeremiah tells us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it” (Jeremiah 17:9)? The original sin of Adam and Eve passed to all mankind from that one act of disobedience. Romans 5:12 says exactly that:

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men. For that all have sinned.” We sin because we are sinners, we aren’t sinners because we sin. Psalm 51:5 states, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

There is only one answer to our dilemma. “The Lord (Yahweh) ‘I Am’ (God the Father) has laid upon him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah

53:6). Christ bore our sins past, present, and future on that cross. It’s the only solution, someone must die.

“For the soul that sins it shall die” (Ezekiel 18:20). He, Christ, died in our place. His death has a twofold purpose. He took our sin upon Himself and we received His righteousness. 2nd Corinthians 5:21 illustrates this truth: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” His sacrifice on the cross was a once for all atonement for

the sins of the entire world. What do we mean by that? Is the whole world going to heaven? Nothing could be further from the truth. 1st John 2:2 says, “He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.” This is speaking of the efficacy, the universal reach of His work. It has the power to save all, but only those who trust in Christ and turn to him are saved. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who

believe in His name” (John 1:12). “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except by me” (John 14:6). He has taken our iniquity and we receive His righteousness, forever justified before God. So, every man, woman and child could be saved, but only the ones who come to Him, believe and receive, will be saved. Remember the scripture, “Wide is the path that leads to destruction and many are on it. Narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there are that find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). So, we looked at how God laid on Him the iniquity of us all (salvation). Let’s consider how iniquity is dealt with in the believer’s daily walk.

THIS WEEK’S Jerusalem Church Hosts Band

On Sunday, June 1 the Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 36 Church Street, Rothsville, will host the Heidelberg Brass Band at 10:00 a.m. They will lead the worship service with the Polka Mass. A picnic lunch will follow in the church social hall. All are invited to attend.

But what should we do when we sin as a believer, because we will have to deal with this on a daily basis? 1st John 2:1: “My little children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father.” Once Jesus is your savior, He then becomes your advocate (to plead in favor of) to God the

Father. “If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin” (1st John 1:9). Don’t bag or store your sins, confess them (agree together with God it is sin) right away. Above all, do something about it, forsake it. “He that covers his sin shall not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them, shall find mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). So, the tendency of sheep is to go astray and turn to their own way, to wander off. We do this even as a believer, but we should always stay close to the shepherd. Don’t be that lamb that goes astray!

Laila Martin 8th Grade

Martin

Brooklynn Groff

Senior

As the ambitious senior, Brooklyn Groff, wraps up her last quarter at Garden Spot High School, she continues to lead her peers towards success.

Laila is the 13-year-old daughter of Brandt and Gina Martin. She attends Lincoln Mennonite Church with her family. Laila’s favorite Scripture Passage is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” When asked what her favorite part of school is, she said, “P.E. and hanging out with her friends.” Laila’s favorite class is P.E. because she gets to do what she loves, running. Along with running, Laila likes to listen to music, playing the PS5, and playing flag football and basketball with her 3 brothers. After she graduates, Laila is planning on going to Schaefferstown Mennonite for high school. Some of Laila’s favorite hobbies include going to New York to visit her biological siblings and shopping at her favorite store, Main Street Exchange. Her greatest accomplishment so far is running a 5K and finishing 6th in the B division. If she were to change anything in the world, it would be abortion. If Laila could travel anywhere in the world, she would go to Dubai. She would like to travel to Dubai because she wants to ride a yacht and because there are really pretty beaches. Laila’s role models are her mom and dad because they love her and encourage her when times are easy and hard.

Groff is president of Tri-M Music Honor Society, treasurer of National Honor Society, and treasurer of Garden Spot Performing Arts. Groff was also one of two drum majors in the fall of 2024, as well as a member of concert band and chorus.

With only a few weeks remaining in her senior year, Groff looks forward to attending Alvernia University for their five-year program for occupational therapy.

Through an internship with Garden Spot’s occupational therapist, Groff reflects on what she’s learned about her future career: “I just loved it. I loved working with the kids. I loved figuring stuff out. It just assured me that this was going to be something that I was going to like doing for my career.”

One of her most treasured moments this past year was partnering with Elena Zimmerman to lead the marching band. She explains how she “loved being the drum major. I loved being the leader. I loved our little salute that Elena and I did. We had a fun salute to go with our spy-themed show.”

Groff continues to lead her fellow music peers, and her advisor, Daniel Larrick, describes Groff as “extremely organized...and very relatable.”

Wherever Groff is, her classmates, advisors, and teachers all rely on her to lead her peers and to go above and beyond in her responsibilities.
