Peter’s Porch also operates at Faith United Lutheran Church on the first Saturday of each month, Lititz Mennonite Church on the second Saturday, and Landis Valley Christian Fellowship on the fourth Saturday.

SYNOPSIS
Der alt Brodfresser, Dave Hornberger, woke up one night and recalled “Baali,” a day laborer who used to work on their farm by Stevens. The Currier and Ives sketch of “The Ladder of Fortune” reminded him of Baali. This C. and I. sketch can be interpreted as a sermon. Some climb the ladder to salvation, others remain behind in perdition.By day Baali was an excellent worker, but on the weekend he was intoxicated. He wandered about town calling out: “Ring the bell for Baali!” The young fellows in town would ask him for his recipe for potato wine and then in mock earnestness write it down. When they read it back to him, the ingredients were all distorted. This made Baali very angry. Baali lived with his housekeeper and two daughters. The townspeople referred to the three women as “Annie Baali,” “Alice Baali” and “Mary Baali.” It was reported that his housekeeper got in trouble in Ephrata with the constable because of her amorous affairs. There was even a piece in the paper. The next week Baali came again to work on the farm. He told Mrs. Hornberger of the incident. He had asked his housekeeper whether she was ashamed of what she had done and said to her: “I guess you no longer know what shame is!”
My pastor and I compared notes recently. We agreed that nowadays people no longer blush. And the pastor reminded Dave of Jeremiah 6:15: Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush…”
On March 21, another letter from Der alt bluttkebbich Brodfresser was postmarked in Effredaa. We are always pleased to hear from our good friend Dave Hornberger. Baali and his family certainly makes for a good story, even if it illustrates how not to live your life. The observation concerning our present day inability to blush is a telling one.

Aaron Hurst 8th Grade
Hinkletown Mennonite
Aaron Hurst is the son of Chad and Nicole Hurst and is an eighth grader at Hinkletown Mennonite School. He attends Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community with his parents and three siblings. His pets include two dogs and a few fish. Two simple facts about Aaron are that he loves pizza, and his favorite color is orange. Aaron is a middle school student whose time is occupied by sports now, but he already knows that he will spend his time in the field of agriculture later in life.
Aaron enjoys being very involved and active through participating in the many sport programs offered to middle school students by HMS. The seasons of soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track and field fill up his whole school year. The engagement Aaron has in all of these activities is driven by his competitive personality. Although sports occupy his time now, Aaron hopes to have a career in agriculture in the future. He plans to further his agricultural knowledge through the resource of FFA in high school. The part Aaron likes most about the field of farming is the opportunity to fix equipment. This interest in agriculture did not start with Aaron, though; it has been introduced by and passed down from family. His father’s side of the family owns Oregon Dairy, which originally started out as a farm but has now grown to additionally include a market, restaurant, and bake shoppe. Perhaps Oregon Dairy will be a place to invest in his career in the years to come.
Although Aaron Hurst has a plan for the future, only God knows exactly what will happen. Everyone wishes Aaron the best and looks forward to seeing what God does in his life!
Ryan Weaver 11th Grade
Ryan Weaver is a junior at Ephrata Mennonite this year. He likes to play basketball and soccer and he plays both of those sports at Ephrata Mennonite School. He has been going to that school since kindergarten and he can’t wait to be a senior and finish school.
One of his highlights at school is doing Ministry Arts Team tour because he got to make great memories and got to make some great friends and make stronger friendships through this.
He also attends Martindale Mennonite Church. His parents are Daryl and Jen Weaver, and he has one brother who graduated from Ephrata Mennonite last year and has three younger sisters who go to Ephrata Mennonite. Daryl also helps with the spring program that’s happening this year at EMS.

One thing he’s looking forward to is summer break and all the fun that is going to happen over that time. That fun might be riding motorcycle which is one of his dreams that he would love to do in the future, when he can get enough money to buy one and to get his license for one.
Overall, Ryan is a great guy and he would be an excellent person to get to know.

Don’t Give Up
By Pastor John Fredericksen
Being in the pastorate can be discouraging. After all, you are an obvious target for criticism. The messages are always too long or too short, you use too many illustrations or not enough, the content is too deep or too shallow, you stand too strongly on biblical truth or not strongly enough, and so it goes. On one occasion, I had a Christian leader harshly dress me down in public for 45 minutes and accused me of a variety of things I simply had not done. He only thought I had done them. I left that meeting so discouraged; I just wanted to give up the ministry, and maybe even give up walking
with the Lord. Thankfully, He sent me encouragement when I needed it most.
Being discouraged spiritually isn’t exclusive to pastors either. All believers encounter this at one time or another. You can almost feel the sorrow of heart when you read the testimonies of God’s men of the past. David wrote: “I had fainted…” (Psa. 27:13), Jeremiah said: “When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me” (Jer. 8:18), and Jonah said: “… my soul fainted within me” (Jonah 2:7). They were so discouraged and spiritually weakened that they simply felt like giving up. Thankfully, these servants of God did not give up, and there is much to learn from what carried them through. Jonah relates to us how he found the strength to carry on: “I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto Thee, into Thine holy temple” (Jonah 2:7). Coupled with obedience to God’s will, his discouragement turned when he stayed his mind on the Lord in prayer. Similarly,
Isaiah proclaims: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength… they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). As you can see, Isaiah also found it helpful to focus his thoughts on the Lord through prayer.
The Apostle Paul had opposition from without and from within the company of believers, and had much to be discouraged about, but he didn’t quit. His testimony was: “seeing we have this ministry…we faint not” (II Cor. 4:1). He kept his heart focused on serving the Savior, with Galatians 6:9 in mind: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Simply put, heaven and reward from the Savior strengthened the resolve of this servant. It can for us too.
Are you discouraged spiritually? Don’t quit! Pray, focus on the importance of serving Christ, and rejoice in future reward!
Next week, we will continue the series on Isaiah.
