Crossword Puzzle 6 Things To Do 6-7

In honor of International Firefighter Day, Ephrata businesses, schools, churches and local residents joined together to share their appreciation for their volunteer firemen, fire police and staff, through cards, gift cards and food. The Ephrata businesses signed a giant ‘thank you’ card and donated over 160 gift cards to the fire

staff, while five restaurants supplied all the food for their celebration! Hundreds of students from the middle/ intermediate school and high school signed giant thank you cards, while the elementary schools created their own cards. These tokens of appreciation for these selfless volunteers were given to the fire staff

on Tuesday, May 6 during their meeting. The Ephrata community says, “Thank you to these local heroes who are always there for us 24/7!”

This week in the midst of the first “heat wave” this spring, we are sharing with our SHOPPING NEWS readers the last opus from the pen of Die Anna vun Bannwill. Just one week ago she wrote GEDREI. At that time, she wrote: “Over the years, I have recalled ‘This, above all else, to thine own self be true.’ I was reasonably sure it originated from Shakespeare. To check, I called my high school English teacher, still well and residing in Wernersville. Her name is Helen Shearer. The words are from Hamlet by Shakespeare…I am so fortunate to still have my high school teacher as well as my first teacher for five years in country school alive yet and well.”

Anna informs us that GEDREI expresses some of her feelings on this old fashioned virtue.

Anna signs her note with: “Wie immer, die Anna vun Bannwill as browiert gedrei zu sei zu was she waar gelannt.”

This week, we are iwweraus delighted to be able to salute two outstanding ladies who helped make DIE ANNA VUN BANNWILL what she is today, a great Dutch lady. We salute Helen Shearer of Wernersville and Anna’s grade school teacher!!!

Feeling a little sheepish lately?

Author: Wenger

Scripture: Isaiah 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, everyone, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

We should have a quick review for those who may be just joining on our study of Isaiah 53:6. Our attention went first to Israel, who would not keep the Sabbath as God instructed. Adam and Eve also turned to their own way and look at the results. Samson wouldn’t listen to God’s instruction and to his

demise, was involved with a Canaanite woman Delilah. That encounter cost him his sight, freedom and eventually, his life. Then, we considered Solomon. You would think his great wisdom would prevent him from loving foreign women, as Samson did. He eventually fell into idol worship and led a whole nation into idolatry. Then Israel thought they knew better than God and didn’t drive out the previous inhabitants of the land. Just as God said, they adopted their ways and were eventually judged.

So, let’s continue in our study on how to keep from going astray or turning to our own. Our first key was walking in faith, as Joshua did when he said, “choose you this day.” Make a decision that you will follow the Lord. Israel was always wishy washy, back and forth, obedience and disobedience; look how they just wandered for forty years. Next, we moved on to the greatest

area of influence on our actions and that is, guarding your mind. In regard to the imagination, we have the admonition to bring every thought into obedience to Christ. So, let’s look at a few other safeguards. Surrender/submission to God’s plan as detailed in scripture will keep us on the path of obedience. In salvation you have to come to the place where you realize your way isn’t working out. There has to be a repentance, which is a turning from sin and self and turning to forgiveness of sin and servanthood to Christ. It really is the same as we walk in the new life. We have to understand His plans are better. His plans bring lasting peace. His plans bring refreshment instead of exhaustion and striving. We have to practice the sovereignty of God. He is sovereign, but we must live in it, not just profess it to be true. God’s will is going to be done and we can either

participate or spectate (which means to “not take part”). Remember the metaphor about the clay and the potter? Isaiah 45:9 says, “Woe to him who strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him who fashions it, ‘What are you doing?’ or your handiwork say, ‘He has no hands?’” But we can’t just submit to fuzzy thoughts about God. We need to surrender to the word of God. Which is yet another way to ensure you aren’t going astray or your own way.

Study the word. I often wondered why some believers are vibrant, alive, excited about Bible study, while others, well, seem like they just wanted fire insurance when they got saved. We limit the Holy Spirit’s work in our soul if we don’t spend time in the word. If you have a lackadaisical attitude to the living and breathing word of God,

the Bible, your life in Christ won’t be very real to you. There will be very little change in your life. You will be at best, spiritually lukewarm. If you’re a believer, there should be a desire to seek God further. “Desire the sincere milk of the word that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). In 2 Timothy 3:16 we see how the word of God keeps us on the path and yes, it is a straight and narrow path. “All scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.” When we wander off the path, the word of God will guide us back on the path and provide instruction so we can stay on the path.

Next week, we will finish our study of Isaiah 53:6. We pretty much went to sea on the topic of going astray and turning to our own way. Sorry about that, it just kind of happened. The inclination of going astray still remains with us as believers after salvation. The primary thrust of our study verse is mankind in general, as a whole, have tried to live without God as in the tower of Babel. The only answer to that problem is that a sacrificial lamb took our place. Next week, we consider how the iniquity of us all was laid upon Him.

Student Spotlight

Madison Zepp

Senior

Cocalico High School

In her final year at Cocalico High School, Madison Zepp, daughter of Jon Zepp and Amanda Knaup, has filled her schedule with a demanding and equally fascinating course load. Over the past school year, Madison has taken Journalism II, AP European History, Honors Applied Calculus, Physics, AP Statistics, AP English Language and Composition, Advanced Ceramics, and has completed an internship in the marketing/ creating department for Garden Spot Communities. Outside of her studies, Madison can be found running Cocalico Book Club meetings, participating in the Cocalico ASL Club, and writing articles for the Newspaper Club. Additionally, Madison is currently employed at Redner’s Markets.

Beyond school and her extracurriculars, Madison enjoys hanging out with her siblings, reading, writing, playing guitar, listening to music, and spending time outdoors. Her role models are her parents, who have worked hard to be where they are. One of her favorite quotes is, “If it’s meant to be, it’ll be,” by Ethel Cain.

Madison has been the Student Spotlight reporter for the Newspaper Club for the past two years, and she is proud to say that she has found fulfillment in highlighting people and their stories in such a unique and special way. Her favorite memory in all four years of participating in the club is when her first Student Spotlight article was published, which felt like her first true article, even though she had published other articles before. This fall, Madison will be attending West Chester University for English Education, pursuing her goal of becoming a high school English teacher. Those who know Madison are lucky enough to experience her kindhearted nature, friendly disposition, and willingness to create a space where everyone is welcome. Madison has a bright future ahead of her, and Cocalico wishes her the best of luck in all of her endeavors!

Emma Christner

Senior

Emma Christner, a senior at Lititz Christian, was born to Aaron and Heidi Christner in Warsaw, Indiana. Her mother is someone she admires most because of how well she raised Emma and her three older brothers: Alex, Jack, and Stephen, who also attended and graduated from Lititz Christian in the past years. Throughout Emma’s years at LCS, she has been involved in many in-school and extracurricular activities that have helped shape her into an outstanding student. These activities include varsity volleyball and basketball, being the Student Activity and Leadership Team president, yearbook, National Honor Society, and fulfilling the role of Stage Manager for the school’s 2024 spring musical. In addition to these activities, Emma likes to spend her free time baking, cooking, playing sports, and spending time with her family. What she loves most about school is her friends and teachers, as well as Calculus class with Mrs. Hoover and Economics class with Mr. Swift.

After graduating from high school, she plans to attend Lancaster Bible College to major in business and play basketball for the women’s team. Emma was raised in a Christian school and household. She and her family also attend the Worship Center in Leola, where she attends youth group. Lastly, something she would change in the world would be to

* There’s no end to the quick timesavers and innovations in the kitchen. Today’s homemakers are likely to have a fulltime job already. Here’s one for those mornings when you want to get a little fancy, but don’t have all day: Make hash browns in a waffle iron. Parboil shredded potatoes the night before. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag. Generously oil your waffle iron and scatter precooked potato shreds on. They cook twice as fast, and have all of the doublesided crispiness of panfried.

* Freeze leftover wine for use in cooking. Use and icecube tray for uniform measuring.

* Want to hardcook many eggs at once? Bake the eggs in the oven 325350 for 30 minutes, then submerge them in ice water for 10 minutes. Peel and enjoy.

* “Tension rods can be used in cabinets to separate cookie sheets and have them stored upright. Use two shorter ones mounted vertically in the cabinet, and slide the sheets right in. You can also use a dish rack to store pot lids upright. This is something I do, and my cabinets are nice and organized.” R.L. in Indiana

* Try prep cooking once a week for as many elements of that week’s meals as possible. Chop veggies, saute or even brown meats for casseroles or prep slow cooker bags. It does save time if you are able to cook two meals at once, say, roast two chickens: one for tonight’s dinner and another for chicken enchiladas later in the week.

* I only buy my bread when it’s two for one. I freeze it in half loafs, so I always have fresh bread, even if my nest is empty now! D.D. in Maryland Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

How You Can Turn Your Yard Into A Vacation-Worthy Oasis This Summer

Warm weather means more time to relax outdoors.

For those homeowners lucky enough to have entertaining spaces outside, spring and summer provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air under the sun or stars.

Over the last few years, families have become especially familiar with what works about their yards and where there is room for improvement. Pandemicrelated travel restrictions and early stayathome mandates resulted in plenty of time spent in backyards on staycations. Even though many such restrictions have been lifted, homeowners may have seen the benefits of having functional respites right outside their doors.

A backyard renovation can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. The American Society of Landscape Architects suggests homeowners budget the cost of a major landscaping project at between 5 and 10 percent of their home’s value. Large or small, here are ways to make an outdoor oasis at home.

Create living privacy

deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging.

Extend the living space

Decks and patios can help make outdoor entertaining areas more comfortable by eliminating the need to sit on the grass or gravel. Plus, they add another “room” to the home. When paired with weatherproof patio furniture, such as sofas, loungers and tables, a private seating area can be crafted and utilized

for any number of entertaining desires.

Hang a hammock

Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book.

Additional oasisinspired ideas include outdoor kitchens, letting up lanterns, cascading water features, and bird feeders to attract the sounds of nature.

Install a pool

Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days. An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer

Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the allnatural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easycare vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fastgrowing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers.

the ultimate hangout zone. However, aboveground pools also serve the purpose and are more budgetfriendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with

some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

Provide outdoor atmosphere

Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a
