Historic Ephrata Cloister Schedules New Amphitheater Open House

Historic Ephrata Cloister will hold an Open House at its newly revitalized amphitheater on Sunday afternoon, May 4, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this free event to get a sneak peek at the venue before the project is officially completed and open for business.
Visitors can tour the amphitheater, take a look
inside the set buildings behind the stage, test the acoustics of the space, and pose for photographs in the Glade. Inside the Visitor Center, displays will chronicle the evolution of the amphitheater through its many phases and provide a look back at the Vorspiel through its three decades of performance. Located on the grounds of
the Ephrata Cloister, a National Historic Landmark and Pennsylvania Trails of History site, the amphitheater was originally constructed in 1963 by the Ephrata Cloister Associates, the nonprofit organization that supports the work of the museum, which is managed and operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. For thirty
years, the open-air hillside was the home of the Vorspiel, a musical drama featuring 18th century hymns composed by the Brothers and Sisters of Ephrata and starring notable local actors and musicians, plus the newly formed Ephrata Cloister Chorus. The historical drama ran every
summer Saturday for nearly 30 years before closing in 1989. Since then, the amphitheater was used for weddings and gatherings until it fell into disrepair and was completely shut down in 2020.
In 2021, the Ephrata

WEATHER PROPHETS
Is is cold enough for you?
Do you think we’ll get snow today? Yes, this looks like a hard winter, If I understand this thing.
Our weather, this is something That we all talk about. Listen to people talking About the rain and the sun.

When folks get together
Often they will ask you soon: Well, how do you like this sort weather? Isn’t the sunshine fine?
Each person has a way That they read the weather signs. Ask him what he thinks about the weatherImmediately he will tell you what he knows.
There are still so many signs To forecast the weather. What is the report for today?
Sunshine or perhaps rain?
Do you think we’ll have a hard winter? Notice the caterpillars in the fall! If they are dark: Watch out! For cold weather be prepared!
Caterpillars that are just light brown, Some folks think will tell you truly, That the winter will be mildSome folks believe even this.
Some folks look a the sky In August to see the white clouds. White clouds in abundance in August Portend snow and ice.
Yes, they say of the clouds: That’s the snow blooming now For the winter storms that are coming. This portends weather cold and raw.
A red sky in the evening means That we’ll surely have sunshine. A red sky in the morning says: Keep your raincoat by your side.
And a prophet highly esteemed By the old German people Is the groundhog in February: It will speak to us of springtime.
When the katydids sing, The country folks often say to you: In six weeks you can look For the first frost on the trees.
Does the sundog appear in the sky? Look for rain in one day.
Mornings when there is no dew on the grass: It will rain today - is the saying.
Do you see clouds in the sky That look like tedded hay, And does the moon have a ring around it? These are also signs of rain.
Are the children cross and grouchy And do the flies pester one? Then the folks say it will rain: I think we’ll stay at home today.
Is there a colorful rainbow In the west instead of in the east? This means we’ll have weeks of rain, Look for weather that is damp and ugly.

A loyal reader asks...
“How do I decide what to keep when downsizing?”
Great question – and one we hear often! Downsizing isn’t just about fitting into a smaller space – it’s about keeping what truly matters. Ask yourself: Do I love this item? Have I used it in the last 90 days? Will it fit in my new space? If not, it might be time to let it go.
Try the 20/20 rule: If you can replace it for under $20 in

under 20 minutes, you probably don’t need to keep it. Or the 90-second rule: If you can’t decide in 90 seconds, it’s likely not essential.
Sort items into: Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash. We have resources to help you consign or sell valuable pieces and maximize your return. Still stuck? A “Purging Pal” (yes, that’s a thing!) can coach you through it with compassion –and maybe a few laughs.
Hint: Start early, take breaks, and celebrate small wins.

There are many other things That folks take as signs That tell them of
So when people get together Strangers or friends like me, The weather is discussed like: Is it hot enough for you? ***
Concerning the word Wassergall for sundog, Gladys reports that she learned it from her sister and brother-inlaw; however, Gladys’ husband and his family gave her the term Widdersunn. Gladys opted for Wassergall. Lambert’s Dutch dictionary does not list either form. When Gladys checked with “Der Schtiwwelgnecht,” Clarence Reitnauer, who lives just outside of Siessholzwill in the hills of eastern Berks County, she learned that Clarence did not know the term in either language. This is remarkable for “Der Schtiwwelgnecht” has been writing a Dutch column in the weekly newspaper Town and Country for about 20 years.
Bischli-Gnippli had a vague recollection of having heard of the word sundog in English, so he began his search by consulting the second edition (1987) of the Random House Dictionary of the English language. The definition there is: 1. parhelion; 2. a small or incomplete rainbow. Parhelion is defined as: A bright circular spot on a solar halo; a mock sun; usually one of two or more such spots seen on opposite sides of the sun and often accompanied by additional luminous arcs and bands. The Greek word parelion means “beside the sun.” The Muret-Sanders German to English dictionary translates sundog with Nebensonne, which is a direct translation of the Greek term parelion.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, other terms for sundog are weathergall, watergall and windgall. The OED refers also to the German term Wettergalle.
S.O.S.!!! READERS TO THE RESCUE! WHO RECALLS A GENUINE DUTCH WORD FOR SUNDOG?

OBITUARIES Woman’s Club Of Ephrata
(Continued From Page 3A)
James L. Martin, husband of RoseAnn, Akron; Jerry S. Martin, husband of Carleen, Ephrata; and Randy S. Martin, husband of Jody, Denver; three daughters: Glenda M. Weaver, wife of Leon, Ephrata; Janet S. Fox, wife of Stanley, Ephrata; and Charlene S. Mellinger, Ephrata; 35 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Earl Ray Sensenig, and Lloyd Sensenig; and two sisters: Vera Hoover, and Earla Mae Burkholder.
She was preceded in death by a son, Isaac S. Martin, and three infant greatgrandchildren.
Highlights
As the first day of spring tiptoed into Ephrata with sunshine and the first signs of daffodils, the Woman’s Club of Ephrata gathered at the Eicher Arts Center to welcome the season with open arms and open hearts. Their March meeting was a perfect blend of purpose and renewal—just the kind of gathering that reminds us why they cherish this community so deeply.
Their featured speaker came from the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, offering a moving presentation about the rescued wolves in their
care. Each of these magnificent creatures has been given a second chance at life after being displaced from unsuitable or illegal domestic environments. While they can never be released into the wild, they now live peacefully within the sanctuary’s protected grounds. They were inspired by the stories of healing, trust, and the deep respect these animals receive.
The spirit of service was alive and well as their members shared updates from various committees. From the continued success of their outreach and wellness calls to preparations for upcoming spring events, the energy in the room was buzzing with commitment and care. Plans for the April Membership Tea were mentioned with delight—teacups
at the ready and spring dresses waiting in the closet! They also paused to reflect on the resilience of their members. Whether facing health challenges or simply needing a little extra encouragement, it’s the kind words, check-in calls, and thoughtful gestures that keep the club spirit thriving. Moments like these truly showcase the heart behind everything they do. The Woman’s Club of Ephrata meets the third Thursday of each month at 1:00 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center. They welcome new members who are passionate about friendship, service, and giving back to the community. For more information, please contact Nancy Bacon at 717808-6739. They’d love to welcome you into the fold!

How To Show Appreciation For Teachers Tips To Get Children Excited About Exercise
Great teachers go above and beyond for their students. Students benefit from those efforts in the classroom, but many adults also can name one, two or even more educators whose lessons and enthusiasm for learning has benefitted them long after the final bell rang on their academic careers.
The efforts of teachers who go the extra mile for their students are worthy of recognition and appreciation. Families who want to express their gratitude to teachers can do so in any number of ways.
• Write a note. A personal note from a student or parents or both can warm the hearts of teachers. Personal letters may not be as common as they once were, but they remain a thoughtful way to express gratitude and appreciation to people who have had a positive impact on a person’s life. That makes a personal, handwritten note an ideal and meaningful way for families to show their appreciation for a teacher.
• Pitch in at school when the opportunity presents itself. Teachers seek a helping

hand at various points in a given school year. A teacher might ask for volunteers to assist with holiday parties or special school events or even request help coming up with extra school supplies or items needed for a particular project. In fact, a recent survey from the Association of American Educators found that public school teachers spend an average of $673 per year of their own money on school supplies. Parents can express their appreciation for teachers by responding with enthusiasm to requests for supplies, When responding, parents can ask teachers if there’s anything else they can do to help and offer to volunteer their services during class parties.
• Organize a class gift. A gift from the class around the holiday season and/or at the end of the year can let teachers know their efforts have not gone unnoticed. By pooling their resources, parents can give teachers an especially nice gift. A night out at a local restaurant or tickets to a show can make for a well-deserved excursion for educators who often work long past the school day to help students learn.
• Contact higherups at the school. An email or phone with a school principal or another higher-up in the local school system is another way for parents to ensure the efforts of a teacher are recognized. Let the higherups know when a teacher has made a positive impact on a child and how much their efforts are appreciated. Many teachers go to great lengths to support their students. Families can recognize those efforts in a host of meaningful ways that will let educators know how much they’re appreciated.
Human beings need to engage in physical activity to stay healthy. But too many children are not getting the exercise they need. Only 50 percent of boys and less than 34 percent of girls between the ages of 12 and 15 are adequately fit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children who are not physically fit are at greater risk for chronic diseases. In addition, children who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of retaining that extra weight into adulthood. Getting children to exercise regularly can be an uphill battle with so many distractions, such as electronic devices, vying for their attention. But parents can explore the following ways to get children more excited about physical activity.
• Choose interactive toys. Select toys for kids that require movement. These can include sporting activities, scooters, bicycles, and even video games that involve physical activity. Kids will be moving while they play, which is a first step.
• Set an example. Children may be more likely to embrace physical activity if they see their parents exercising regularly. Adults can share their passions for activities that encourage movement, whether it is hiking, heading to the gym, swimming, or rock scrambling.
• Make it a contest. People can be very competitive, especially young children. If kids know there is a prize or reward attached to doing something, they may have more motivation to engage with it. Offer a prize to the person who can log the most minutes of physical activity each week.
• Make things social. The more people involved in an activity, the greater the chance kids will want to be involved. Therefore, invite
their friends, cousins, classmates, and other relatives to participate.
• Look for new ways to exercise. Plan vacations and day trips around an activity. Perhaps the family can learn how to surf or snorkel on a trip; otherwise, a trip to the zoo or a museum can involve a lot of walking.
• Find reasons to walk. Kids and parents can walk to or from school each day to get exercise. Parking further away from stores ensures some extra steps as well. Take the stairs in malls instead of elevators or escalators.
• Encourage participation in team sports. Afterschool athletics often involve multiple days of practices and games or meets, which can be all the exercise a kid needs to be healthy. Athletics also present a fun way to exercise with friends.
Kids need physical activity to stay healthy, and there are various ways to make them more inclined to be active.

Feeling a little sheepish lately?
Author: Wenger
Scripture: Isaiah 53:6“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
One last thought about going astray that frightens me and it should frighten you, too. Psalms 81:8-12 states that if we continue on in disobedience that eventually, and we don’t know how far that is, God will say, ok, have it your way, and God steps back. God speaks to Israel about their idols“Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you! O Israel, if you will listen to Me! There shall be no foreign god among you; nor shall
you worship any foreign god. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it, But My people would not heed My voice, and Israel would have none of Me. So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, to walk in their own counsels.” Sorry, the verse is lengthy, but the scariest part is at the end when God gives them up to their own ways! Sounds to me like that’s kind of it for protection, provision, rain and all of the other blessings of God we so often take for granted. What often followed was plagues, invasions from enemies and just abject misery. The problem is, you don’t know when God has reached his tipping point and may give you up.
Well, I think I made my point over the last couple of weeks with biblical characters who went astray and turned to their own way. Really though, we aren’t that

different. Human nature is human nature. We can easily say, if I saw what the Old Testament saints saw or the New Testament miracles, I wouldn’t do what they did. Don’t be too sure of that. We may be sheep, but we don’t have to go astray. Here are some keys to protect and deliver.
Walk in faith, don’t stumble in doubt The book of James says, “But he must ask in faith without any
doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that person ought not to expect he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man unstable in all his ways” (James 1:6-8). Joshua had the resolve to walk in faith (in what God can and would do) when he commanded the Israelites to choose, “and if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will

serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Joshua extended a powerful call to make a (once and for all) deliberate decision, which had far-reaching consequences. This decision, or lack of, will have a tremendous impact on your life as well. The Israelites were constantly wavering back and forth. Look at what their indecision did for them - wondering in the wilderness for forty years! Joshua ends with his own life example… “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” No surprise he was one of two out of ten spies who brought back a good report of the Promised Land, that they, with God’s help, could take it. Guard your mind because it all starts there. We are drawn to go astray and turn
to our own way by our own desire within, that is temptation in its infancy. The book of James makes this clear. “But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust (ungodly desire of any kind)” (James 1:14). Temptation to go astray comes from within. There may be external triggers, but they simply start the process. It continues in a definite progression that we see in verse 15 of James 1. “Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings for forth death.” One verse that speaks to the mind is Proverbs 4:23 - “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are all the issues of life.” The verse emphasizes the importance of protecting one’s inner thoughts, desires, and motives, as they are the source of one’s actions and character.
We will pick up our theme next week.
