FACTS ABOUT ESTONIA AND TALLINN
Estonia’s capital Tallinn is the best-preserved medieval city in Northern Europe. Estonia’s UNESCO world heritage capital Tallinn was granted city rights in the 13th century by the King of Denmark. Since then, the streets of Tallinn have seen many world powers, from the Danes and Swedes to Germans, and tsarist and Soviet Russia. Tallinn’s Old Town is filled with medieval houses and alleyways and is still protected by the remnants of the city wall. The wealth of architecture in Tallinn means that there are many legends and stories to explore. In addition to the city’s medieval core, newly revamped districts such as Noblessner, Telliskivi, and Rotermann are popping up at lightspeed, offering even more cool architecture to explore.
Estonians speak Estonian...as well as English, Russian, Finnish and German. In fact, according to recent studies, they are among the best English speakers in Europe. However, While the millennials usually know two languages fluently on average, the older generations of Estonians are often fluent in Finnish and Russian in addition to English and Estonian. So no matter what you speak, communication will be possible.
The Estonian language is something unique to the country and sounds different from anything else in Europe. Because of its melodic sound and long vowels, there’s an ongoing joke that many visitors think Estonians speak elvish. This magical-sounding language is in fact Estonian, a Finno-Ugric related to Finnish and Hungarian.
Being among the least densely populated countries in Europe, Estonia makes for a great nature and city break destination for those looking to stretch out their limbs and enjoy some peace, quiet, and solitude. In the recent five years, immigration has been driving a subtle population growth year by year.
Estonia is the only Baltic country with a deep-rooted and extensive island culture. Although most are uninhabited, Estonian islands tend to be rural, with some holding traces of their local Viking and medieval legacy. Estonia’s islands used to be populated by Estonian Swedes, many of whom left the region during WWII, leaving behind a wealth of culture that’s visible to this day.
Today, many Estonian islands have their own unique coastal cultures, with traditional singing, dancing, food, and dress. Of course, no matter which island you’re on, you’ll be sure to enjoy plenty of fish and seafood dishes.

The card offers free access to more than 40 of Tallinn’s best museums and attractions, public transport and a number of other benefits. You can buy the card for 24, 48 or 72 hours. The plastic card is valid for 12 months and one adult card includes two children up to seven years of age free of charge. The Museum Card is a pass that allows you unlimited visits to over 100 museums and 500 exhibitions in Estonia for a full year!
Estonian Song and Dance Celebration is the local signature event and a reason why Estonia is often referred to as the “singing nation”. This mesmerising event is unique to Estonia has even earned the song and dance celebration a place at UNESCO’s prestigious list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Alongside traditional choral music, Estonian hosts loads of music festivals from nearly every genre. It’s safe to say that Estonian music plays a huge role in the country’s culture. In fact, music and singing actually started Estonia’s movement to regain independence.

Niisiis, oled värskelt Tallinnas maabunud. Kuidas iganes sa pealinna jõudsid, jalad tahaksid veidi sirutust ja meel virgutust. Idülliline Kadrioru park sobib ideaalselt mõlemaks. Kadriorus, mis kätkeb endas mitme sajandi jagu arhitektuuripärle, paljusid kvaliteetmuuseume – KUMU, Kadrioru Kunstimuuseum, Lastemuuseum Miiamilla jt –ning hulgaliselt linnalegende, pole paha mõte ka kergem eine või kohv teha, näiteks maitsekas Katharinenthalis, pidulikus Mon Reposes või ehedas Vesivärava kohvikus.
Ent, kui isutab kogukama suutäie järele, siis tasub siht võtta kesklinna, täpsemalt Rotermanni kvartali suunas, kus leidub äripäeviti rohkelt lõunapakkumisi, ent kindlalt positiivse maitseelamuse pakuvad BALI kohvik, väärt veinikaardiga Flamm ja Michelini-soovitusega R14. Pärast einestamist võib tekkinud magusasoovi rahuldada RØSTi pagariäris, Kalevi šokolaadipoes või lühikese jalutuskäigu kaugusel asuvas armsas Värava kohvikus.
Rotermanni piirkond on suurepärane punkt, kust alustada ostlemisteekonda, mis läbib vanalinna ning lõpeb Telliskivi Loomelinnakus. Sealsamas paikneb ka käekelladisainerite AEGAON esindus, juhuks kui seigeldes ajataju kaduma peaks. Rotermannist pole pikk maa Viru Väravateni, kust edasi kõmbi Raekoja platsi suunas. Raekoda imetletakse - ja imetled sinagi - tõenäoliselt niiehknaa, kuid kohe Raekoja taga asub Fotomuuseum, mis üllatab põnevate näituste ning toreda poega. Nurga taga sobib vahepeatuseks Raamatukoi kauplus, mille riiuleid kaunistab suur kasutatud teoste valik.
Siit, Harju 1 maja eest on Telliskivisse jõudmiseks kaks viisi: läbi Toompea, rühkides Lühikest Jalga pidi Taani kuninga aeda, nautides Kohtuotsa platvorrmilt linnapanoraami ning laskudes Patkuli treppi pidi Šnelli parki; või mööda Nunne tänavat, enne mida jääb teele Raekoja plats, Rataskaev ning Nukuteatrimuuseum. Kopli KÖÖK, Karjase Sai (õhtuti barbarea restoran) ja KOKOMO üllatavad menüüde ja taskukohaste hindadega, tegemata kvaliteedis järeleandmisi. Uute tulijatena on Põhjalas maandunud õllebaar Tuletorn Brewing ning veinibaar Bar Rara. Mõttel saad lendu lasta imelises raamatupoes REaD.

Narva maanteel, tehnopidude meka HALL Noblessneris, Tallinna Tähetorn Hiiul, ARS Kunstilinnak Tondil ja Filmimuuseum Maarjamäel on ainult mõned näited Eesti pealinna melust ja olust. So, you have just landed in Tallinn. By whichever means you arrived, your legs want a little stretch and your mind searches for refreshment. The idyllic Kadriorg Park is perfect for both. Offering centuries’ worth of architectural gems, a number of quality museums – KUMU, Kadriorg Art Museum, Children’s Museum Miiamilla, etc – and many urban legends, it’s not a bad idea to have a smaller meal or a coffee in Kadriorg, for example in the tasteful Katharinenthal, the pompous Mon Repos or the authentic Vesivärava Café.

However, if it’s a proper bite you’re craving for, you should head towards the city center, more precisely the Rotermann Quarter, where there are plenty of lunch offers on business days, but a positive taste experience is guaranteed in BALI Cafe, Flamm that also has a fine wine selection and the Michelinrecommended R14. After the meal your need for something sweet, if you should have one, can be met at RØST Bakery, Kalev Chocolate Shop or the lovely Värav Café, a short walk away.
Rotermann is a great starting point for a shopping journey that passes the Old Town and ends in
Telliskivi Creative City. There’s a lot of walking, but no worries: in Reede you can find comfortable and stylish footwear! The saleroom of watchmakers AEGAON is located right next to Reede, in case you lose track of time while wandering Tallinn, At walking distance from Rotermann are the Viru Gates, from where you can walk towards the Town Hall square.
The Town Hall is always admired - and you will probably admire it too -, but right behind the Town Hall is the Museum of Photography with its exciting exhibitions and nice store. Around the corner, the Raamatukoi book store is suitable for a stopover.

From here, Harju 1, there are two ways to get to Telliskivi: through Toompea, by ascending Lühike Jalg which leads to the Danish King’s Garden, enjoying the city panorama from the Kohtuotsa platform and descending the Patkuli stairs to Šnelli Park; or along Nunne Street, before which you may pass the Town Hall Square, the Cat’s Well and the Museum of Puppetry Arts. Having reached Balti Jaam, the shopping can continue, as Balti Jaama Turg, with its abundance of shops, activities and places to eat, welcomes all visitors. The shopping tour is concluded by a large selection of clothing design in Telliskivi: notable mentions being Kopli Couture, Reet Aus, Kelpman Textile and Toku. In fact, besides design and dining two world-class photo galleries, Fotografiska and Dokfoto Keskus, occupy Telliskivi.
The fact that Tallinn is a city of factories and plants is also indicated by our next destination on the Kopli peninsula, where another revived industrial district called Põhjala factory is located at. The reason for such a route is simple: Põhjala is just one of the best areas to enjoy a good bite and a bit of culture. Kopli KÖÖK, Karjase Sai (barbarea restaurant in the evening) and KOKOMO all surprise with menus and affordable prices, without compromising on quality. The newest additions in Põhjala are Tuletorn Brewing beer bar and Bar Rara wine bar. You can let your mind wander in the wonderful REaD bookshop.
However, for the best cocktails you have to look toward the Old Town again, because the small Botaanik, the mysterious Whisper Sister and the Latin America inspired Escobaar reign in a class of their own. Cocktails aren’t your thing? There are enough bars on the streets of Kalamaja where you can wet your whistle with both local and foreign brewskies, be it in the cozy Tops, the cultural Uus Laine, theatre-bar Heldeke!, or the legendary Kolm Lõvi.
Although! Assuming you have time and that the party in Kolm Lõvi didn’t last until the morning, then there are places in other parts of Tallinn that are waiting to be discovered: the eclectic video game museum LVLup! in Narva maantee, the techno mecca HALL in Noblessner, Tallinn Observatory in Hiiu, ARS Factory in Tondi and the Film Museum in Maarjamäe are just a few examples of the leisure and pleasure of the Estonian capital. So, here’s to exciting experiences!

THE BEST WINTER ACTIVITIES ARE FOUND IN ESTONIA’S WILD NATURE.
Frozen bogs, snow-covered pine trees, and icy beaches will make you feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet and are all yours to explore. A wintertime hike is the easiest way to immerse yourself in nature. No special gear is needed, just boots, a backpack with a thermos, and some snacks.
Follow wooden boardwalks as they wind their way through the bogs or follow clearly marked trails through the forest. Many trails have special places to light a campfire. Bring marshmallows to roast for a real winter treat!
Estonia doesn’t have mountains. You won’t get huge downhill runs like you do in the Alps. But you know what else Estonia doesn’t have? Crowds. Here, you can race with the wind rather than hundreds of downhill skiers.
Even without towering mountains, you can still find hills big enough to get the hang of downhill skiing or snowboarding.
However, if you fancy a ski race, Estonia has that, too — join thousands of competitors at the worldfamous Tartu Maraton. This 63km cross-country skiing competition attracts athletes from all over the world. The race starts in Otepää, the winter capital of Estonia, and ends in Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city. Of course, you don’t have to be a professional skier to enjoy the country’s most popular sport. You’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to go cross-country skiing in Estonia. There are many sports centers where you can rent cross-country skis, head out on groomed tracks, or bring your own and ski on any path covered with enough snow.

Estonia is a great shopping destination because prices are cheaper than in many other EU countries. Most shops in the Old Town and department stores throughout the city are open seven days a week, and major credit cards are widely accepted.
Most shopping centres have free parking, wireless internet access, ATMs, a currency exchange booth or bank and places to eat & drink. Some of the shopping centres offer low cost playrooms, for the kids, with adult supervision so you can shop in peace.

–Handicraft items (hand-knitted woollen sweaters with Estonian folk patterns, carved wooden beer mugs, fun felt hats, juniper coasters.
–Original art, applied art and design objects such as graphic prints, handmade jewellery, colourful glassware or fine ceramics.
–CDs of Estonian composers of international acclaim (Tormis, Pärt, Tubin, Tüür, Villu Veski).

The Estonian way of life revolves around the changing seasons and nature’s bounty. Berries are picked and collected in the summer months, while fruits, vegetables, grains, potatoes, and mushrooms are harvested in the autumn. Apples grow abundantly in Estonia, but some types of talveõun (winter apple) are harvested late in the year and last through the winter. This produce, along with farmed and wild game meats, is pickled, salted, smoked, and otherwise preserved to keep pantries full throughout the winter. Nowadays home food preservation is done more for fun than out of necessity. However, the practice of growing and harvesting one’s own food remains popular in Estonia and is making its way back into modern-day kitchens. Innovative young chefs using these time-honored culinary techniques as a way to make the most of seasonal ingredients.
Typical Christmas foods in Estonia
Winter dishes in Estonia tend to be hearty and filling, providing energy and warmth in cold weather. The food served at a Christmas dinner is no exception. Staples include verivorst (blood sausage), sült (jellied head cheese), hapukapsas (sauerkraut), oven-roasted potatoes, and pork. Lingonberry sauce and pickled pumpkin are offered on the side, as the acidity is the perfect accompaniment to the richness of the meat. While these food traditions go way back, Estonian families today sometimes opt for lighter fare over the holidays, especially as vegetarian and vegan options become more popular.
Ancient Christmas dinner traditions
The Christmas meal itself, eaten on Christmas Eve or the night of Christmas, is an important family event that goes back to pagan times. There were to be seven, nine or twelve servings of food to bring good luck and plenty for next year’s harvest. Food had to remain on the table all night long, and it was forbidden to peek under the table, for this was a sacred place where spirits dwelled, and any food dropped was left there.

Andrei Tarkovski ja Strugatski-vendade vaimus on end erinevates Põhja-Eesti paikades sisse seadnud alternatiivne kunsti ja ulme teemapark, mis läbib Tarkovski kultusfilmi “Stalkeri” võttekohti, tutvustab märkimisväärseid industriaalpärandi näiteid ja esitleb erinevaid kaasaegse kunsti taieseid.
Põhilised teemapargi punktid asuvad Tallinnas Noblessneris (“Stalkeri” pop-up muuseum, Peetri 5), Joaveski vana puupapivabriku aladel ja Narva Kreenholmi manufaktuuris (Joala 23c). Alates 2025. aasta kevadest avaneb kogu Teemapargi rada. Seni soovitatakse külastada “Stalkeri” pop-up muuseumi Tallinnas.
In the spirit of Andrei Tarkovsky and the Strugatsky brothers, an alternative art and sci-fi theme park has been set up in various locations in North Estonia, traversing the shooting locations of Tarkovsky’s cult film Stalker, showcasing notable examples of industrial heritage and displaying a variety of contemporary art.
The main points of the theme park are located in Noblessner, Tallinn (“Stalker” pop-up museum, Peetri 5), on the site of the old Joaveski cardboard factory and at the Kreenholm Manufactory in Narva (Joala 23c). From spring 2025, the entire Theme Park trail will open. In the meantime, a visit to the “Stalker” pop-up museum in Tallinn is recommended.

There is no better way to experience the lifestyle of the Russian Old Believers than by staying at the traditional cottage located in their cultural realm near Lake Peipsi. This cottage is a true representation of the traditional way of life. For the even more adventurous, you can opt to stay in one of the boat houses – some of them even come with sauna! Now if you're one for sauna - Mesi Tare has five of them to rent. The authentic smoke sauna offers a unique experience. They also have a tent sauna, a plastic wrap sauna and a Finnish sauna, as well as a hot tub. And that’s not all! They organise tours on Lake Peipus throughout the year, and the winter tour includes a ride powered by the traditional “karakatitsa”, a type of vehicle with two or more wheels used to move around on the ice of Lake Peipus and locate optimal fishing locations. These vehicles are custom-made by local fishermen. The hostess of Mesi Tare also runs Samovar House where visitors can learn about the importance of these unique tea pots in Slavic culture and the Old Believers’ culture. An authentic Old Believers house by Lake Peipus is home to over two hundred diverse samovars. At Samovar House they share stories about the history of samovars and introduce different shapes and styles of samovars. The Samovar House collection includes over 200 samovars from Russia and other countries, as well as souvenirs and other items related to samovars. The hostesss collection of polka dot cups is also on display. Authentic samovar tea can be enjoyed on site as part of a tea ceremony. Open

QR-pilet on masinloetava koodiga tunnipilet, mis kuvatakse nutiseadme ekraanil või prinditakse. QR-pileti saab osta veebilehelt tallinn.pilet.ee või nutiseadme rakendusega. Sõiduõiguse annab valideeritud koodiga QR-pilet.
1 tunni QR-pilet maksab 2,00 €, QR-sooduspilet 1,00 € Ühe tunni sooduspiletit QR-piletina on elukohast sõltumata õigus kasutada järgmistel isikutel allnimetatud dokumentide alusel:
1) õpilane, kelle rahvastikuregistrijärgne elukoht ei ole Eesti Vabariik - IYTC noortekaart või ISICu õpilaspilet (ISIC Scholar);

Kaardile laetud raha eest ühissõidukis valideerimisel ostetud pilet on 1 tunni pilet hinnaga 2,00 €, millega võib sõidukisse siseneda ühe tunni jooksul. Iga sisenemine tuleb valideerida. Kuidas saada Tallinna lennujaamast kesklinna?
Lennart Meri Tallinna lennujaam asub vaid 4 km kaugusel kesklinnast. Kesklinna ja lennujaama vahel liiklemine on lihtne nii bussi kui ka taksoga.
Bussiga
Bussid nr 2 ja 15 ühendavad lennujaama kesklinnaga. Bussid sõidavad tööpäevade hommikul kella 6:00 kuni u 00:00. Nädalavahetustel ja riigipühadel kell 06:00 kuni u 23:00. Tallinna busside sõiduplaanid leiad aadressil transport.tallinn.ee.
Bussid väljuvad reisiterminali kõrvalt (peatus Lennujaam), kuhu pääseb läbi saabuvate lendude ala. Pileti saab osta bussis viipekaardiga (2 €) või piletimasinast lennujaamas (2 €). Reisi- ja kruiisilaevade terminalid asuvad jalutuskäigu kaugusel keskaegsest vanalinnast (olenevalt terminalist 15-20 minutit).
Bussiga
Bussid nr 20 ja 20A ühendavad sadama D-terminali kesklinnaga ning sõidavad alates 5.30 kuni südaööni (k.a nädalavahetustel ja riigipühadel, vt sõiduplaane: bussiliin 20 ja bussiliin 20A).

to get from Tallinn Airport to the city center
Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport is only 4 km away from the city center.
By bus
Buses No. 2 and 15 connect the airport to the city center. Buses run from approximately 6:00 am to around midnight on weekdays, and from 6:00 am to around 11:00 pm on weekends and public holidays. You can find Tallinn bus schedules at transport.tallinn.ee.
Buses depart from next to the passenger terminal (stop: Lennujaam), which can be reached through the arrivals area. Tickets can be purchased on the bus with a contactless card (€2) or from a ticket machine at the airport (€2). The nearest stop to the city center for bus No. 15 is Estonia (20-25 minutes), while the stops for bus No. 2 in the city center are Kaubamaja, Estonia, and Vabaduse Väljak (20-30 minutes).

By taxi
A taxi from terminals A or D to the city center costs approximately €7-10.

Public transport tickets for city visitors and groups
A valid ticket grants the right to use the Tallinn public transport system. The same tickets can be used for trams, trolleybuses, and city buses (numbers 1–73).
QR tickets
A QR ticket is a machine-readable transport system ticket with a validity period of one hour that is either displayed on the screen of a mobile device or printed out.
A QR ticket can be purchased either on the website tallinn.pilet.ee or with a mobile app. A QR ticket with a validated code grants the holder the right to ride.
A QR ticket that costs costs €2 can be used to purchase up to 10 tickets per code. An unused QR ticket is valid for one year starting from the moment it is purchased. A QR ticket is validated at a square orange validator by the 1st door of the vehicle.
Tourists can also purchase a Public Transport Card that is not personalised.
With the money deposited on the card, tickets can be purchased for up to six persons at a time. In order to do so, deposit money onto the card at a point of sale and swipe the card in front of the orange validator when entering a transport vehicle; this will automatically deduct a one-hour ticket from the card. If the card is used to buy tickets for multiple people, swipe the card, increase the number of passengers (up to five) with the arrow on the validator screen, press OK, and swipe the card in front of the validator one more time.
NB! Tallinn Airport now has self-service machines where you can purchase public transport tickets.
Tallinn Card holders have the right to use the public transport system free of charge for the entire validity period of their card. When entering a vehicle, swipe the Tallinn Card in front of the orange validator to validate the ride.

In Estonia you may in several places find therapeutic mud, the healing properties of which were known in folk medicine since ancient times. Establishments were especially built or reconstructed for the use of local seawater or mud for the treatment of ailments under the supervision of physicians. Today the main objectives of the spa treatments are to give prophylactic care and spa treatments of the kind, which hinder ailments from becoming chronic, lessening the need of sick care, thereby saving costs, and to restore the working capacity and general capacities of the ailing. In our continually more and more hectic rhythm of life many middle aged and even younger persons suffer from stress. In the course of time the Estonian spas have also partly changed their policy from being purely care centres towards being recreation centres, where the clients in addition to the treatments have the possibility to occupy themselves in various healthy activities, go in for sports or just relax and spend their time comfortably.

The history of spas in Estonia expands over more than two centuries. In 1813, doctor Benedikt Georg Witte began offering salt and herb baths in Kadriorg, thereby making Tallinn the first resort town in the Russian Empire. This aspect of Tallinn quickly gained popularity among the Russian elite. An attentive Baltic German physician Carl Abraham Hunnius took notice of how Estonians in Haapsalu rubbed sea mud on their bodies to alleviate joint pain. Convinced of its restorative powers, Hunnius opened the renown Mud Baths of Haapsalu in 1825.

resort towns to this day. The healing mud found in Estonia is also greatly valued nowadays. The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Tallinn is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in its entirety. All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in their basic original form, as well as many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, along with barns and warehouses from the medieval period.
