Cornhole Tournament: to Benefit Blain Community Fire Co at Blain Picnic Grounds Building: ~ ~ Sat March 5 & 26. Start time 11am / Doors open @ 9am $30.00 Entry fee per team, Cash Payout, Food Stand provided.

The Fremont Fire Department is kicking off their annual fund drive on March 1st with a goal of $25,000.

Each year, the department conducts a fund drive in the spring to allow the citizens of their response area to contribute. This fund drive goes specifically to the truck fund to reduce debt on the new fire engine the department purchased in 2019. Local residents should be receiving a donation request in the mail soon. Donations can be mailed to the Fremont Fire Department at P. O. Box 83 Mount Pleasant Mills, PA 17853 and put in the memo line “Fund Drive” or you can donate online via PayPal at fremontfd.com.

SATURDAY, MARCH 19th - Millerstown Community Park Fundraiser: Open Kettle Soups, Sandwiches, Baked goods. 10am until all sold. All food is to take out and enjoy at home.

The 3rd Annual Fremont Meat Bingo will be on Saturday, March 19th. Event will be held at the Fremont Social Hall 299 Millrace Rd Mount Pleasant Mills.

Doors open at 4PM and Bingo will begin at 6PM. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets are $25 each and include 20 regular games valued at $50 each. There will also be 3 special games valued at $65 each and side raffles running throughout the evening. All meats are provided by Stauffer’s Butcher Shop and include items such as hamburger, steaks, sausage, ham, bacon, pork chops, ribs and more. FAMILY ACTIVITIES TO GET KIDS OFF THE COUCH

Thanks to increasingly busy weekday schedules that have families running in different directions for work, school and extracurricular activities, weekends are an ideal time to recharge. Too often, however, family members retire to their respective rooms, devices in hand.

Kommando Tech says people spend an average of three hours and 15 minutes on their phones each day, with Americans spending 5.4 hours a day using phones. Those statistics do not include how much additional time is likely spent on devices like tablets or laptops.

Chances are phones are being used while lounging on the couch or bed, something that has negative health consequences for many children and adults. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to weight gain, loss of muscle strength, weak bones, diminished immune system response, and poor blood circulation, according to the health information site Medline. These fun activities can get kids and parents off the couch on weekends.

Take a family bike ride - Inflate those tires and tighten your helmet chin straps. A family bike ride is an ideal activity for the family because it is something that can be enjoyed by all age groups. Choose the pace and the terrain based on the age of the youngest and/or oldest rider (flat, easy-to-navigate paths for the very young or the elderly), and enjoy exercise in the great outdoors.

Wash the cars - It’s a chore, but it’s one that has the potential for lots of laughs along the way — and possibly a suds fight. Washing vehicles also is a great way to cool off when the weather is warm.

Engage in sports training - Whether the children participate in organized sports or not, set up an obstacle course or fitness circuit in the backyard. Everyone takes turns going through the course. The family can spend time together as everyone gets beneficial exercise.

Do a walking tour - Educational attractions like museums, zoos, aquariums and arboretums are great to visit on weekends. The family will see new sights and learn important information about exhibits, all the while walking a few miles.

Visit an amusement park - Research the nearest amusement park and take a road trip for the day. Hours will be spent walking around the park and going on thrilling rides.

Consider discounted memberships or season passes if this is the type of activity the family plans to repeat.

The possibilities for physically active family engagement are endless and beneficial for the body in myriad ways.

MEATLESS CHILI HELPS CHASE AWAY THE CHILL Warming up on cold days can be a challenge, especially when the weather outside is frightful. Bundling up near the fireplace is one way to keep warm, as is dining on hearty meals that have staying power.

Chili is a cold-weather staple that is full of delicious, fresh ingredients. A little chili goes a long way, and it can be spiced up to increase its warming power. This recipe for “Kidney Bean Double Chili” courtesy of John La Puma, M.D., ChefMD, is a healthy take on this beloved, hearty dish.

cloves garlic, minced ounces frozen beef flavored crumbles, such as Boca or Beyond Beef brands tablespoon chili powder, such as ancho or chipotle chili powder by McCormick brand teaspoons dried Mexican oregano cup chipotle salsa, preferably Frontera brand 15- or 16-ounce cans no salt added kidney beans, rinsed, drained medium yellow summer squash or yellow zucchini, cut into 1⁄2-inch chunks (2 cups) cup reduced fat sour cream cup chopped cilantro or flat leaf parsley

Cook chili peppers and garlic in a large saucepan coated

with cooking spray over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add frozen crumbles, chili powder and oregano and continue to cook 1 minute. Stir in salsa. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook 5 minutes or until chili peppers are tender. Stir in beans and 1 cup water. Stir in squash. Cover and cook until squash is tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt, if desired. Ladle into shallow bowls; top with sour cream and cilantro. *If fresh poblano chili peppers are not available, substitute 1 or 2 jalapeno chilies, minced and seeded, and add 1 large green bell pepper, diced. If chipotle salsa is not available, substitute your favorite salsa and add hot pepper sauce to taste. Ancho or chipotle chili powder will give the dish more heat than regular chili powder. Beef stock may replace the 1 cup water. ENJOY!
