Print Sales at The Photographers’ Gallery in London presents, until April 27, an exhibition dedicated to the new work of the Italian photographer Giacomo brunelli, titled ‘eternal London’. brunelli was studying International communications in college, when he discovered his father’s old Miranda camera in a drawer - a 35mm SrLmanufactured in Japan during the 1950s and 60s. That was the first time he decided to deal with photography. brunelli always shoots in black and white from a low angle that allows him to get up close to his subjects. He is printing the images in small size, retaining the black borders with rounded corners, reminding the 19th century cabinet cards. Giacomo brunelli was born in Perugia in 1977 but he lived in London for almost six years. He is best known for his series ‘The Animals I/II’; he photographed animals in backyards, fields and farms since 2005, defining his work as ‘animalfocused street photography’. With the lens almost touching the subject, he forced the animals to flight or fight, capturing that moment of reaction. brunelli’s images are striking for their immediacy as a direct consequence of the intervention by the photographer. His depictions of animals question how much we truly understand the animal kingdom and its innate wildness.

In the series ‘eternal London’, the Italian photographer wanted London to be recognizable, so he started his walks around famous landmarks, like big ben, the Thames, St. Paul’s cathedral, the Tower of London, etc. He used the morning twilight or diffused light on a cloudy day, creating a hazy atmosphere, offering a unique view of London based on his distinct filmnoir style. As in his previous series, brunelli was following his subjects, a person or an animal, before focusing his camera on them. by using unusual angles – directly from behind or very closed to them – he protects his subjects’ anonymity by obscuring their faces, giving his photographs a dramatic atmosphere. brunelli liked the first few shots he took – the one with the back of a policeman's head, and another in front of a church- and he decided to build the idea of the new series around those images. Although he enjoys capturing people in spontaneous moments, he had to act fast as his old Miranda camera makes a characteristic noise when the shutter is pressed. “once they realize I’m there, they become my actors and it’s no longer spontaneous. I only ever manage 2 or 3 pictures” brunelli says. All his photos are framed around the silhouettes of people and animals, including the statue of Winston churchill depicted alongside big ben, a dog running into the Thames, and a woman featured against the backdrop of St. Paul’s cathedral. All images in the series ‘eternal London’ are silver-gelatin prints signed by the artist and it is an exclusive commission for Print Sales.

Galerie Hiltawsky in berlin presents, from April 25 to June 7, the exhibition “Lawrence Schiller”, a comprehensive and astounding overview of the famous American multifarious artist’s work. Lawrence Schiller is known for his legendary photographs of Marilyn Monroe. In 1962, Schiller had the chance to take some of the most interesting photos of Marilyn for ‘Paris Match’ magazine, on the set of “Something's Got to Give”. It was the actress’s last work, as she died on August of the same year and the film was abandoned. In November 1963, while on assignment for the ‘Saturday evening Post’, Schiller photographed Lee Harvey oswald. Later, he landed Jack ruby’s final interview.

H

Schiller’s iconic images of richard Nixon, robert F. Kennedy, bette Davis, barbra Streisand, Tippi Hedren, Paul Newman, Joanna Woodward, robert redford, clint eastwood, buster Keaton, James earl Jones, Muhammad Ali and Madame Nhu, among others, are tributes to the artist’s charm, his ingenuity, his sensibility and his doggedness, as well as his technical expertise. Lawrence Schiller was born in 1936 in brooklyn. His work began in junior high school in San Diego, when he received his first camera. Though a childhood accident left him with impaired vision in one eye, he became an obsessive photographer. He worked for ‘Life’ magazine, ‘Paris Match’, ‘The Sunday Times’, ‘Time’, ‘Newsweek’, ‘Stern’, as a photojournalist and in 1966 he published his first book, ‘LSD’. Since then he published eleven books most of them became

national bestsellers - and he directed seven motion pictures and miniseries for television. Schiller’s acquaintance with the American novelist, journalist, essayist, playwright, film maker and actor, Norman Mailer, led them to a long, unique friendship and collaboration on several books. In 2005, Schiller traveled to china for creating a collection of chinese contemporary art, numbering over 80 paintings and photographs. In 2007, he exhibited his own vintage photographs ‘Marilyn Monroe and America in the 1960s’, for the first time in the USA, and since then the exhibition has toured beijing, Sofia, Hong Kong, Salzburg, berlin, Miami and London. In 2012, Schiller published his eleventh book, ‘Marilyn & Me’, an intimate story of a legend before her fall and a young photographer

on his way to the top. An original text and extraordinary photographs, some of which have never been published. The exhibition “Lawrence Schiller” presents Monroe’s images (shown in Shoot Me Mag., issue #08, www.shootmemag.com/issue/08/ ), unique portraits of famous American idols, images of memorable and ephemeral moments in world history, a tremendous fighting scene with Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson, and a documentation of the minutes after Lee Harvey oswald was charged with the murder of JFK. Today, Schiller lives and works in New york, looking back at a fascinating career

Football breathes happiness into sun-baked days and rain-soaked evenings. on a continent where not even the basics are taken forgranted, football is precious. And like everything that’s truly precious, it’s a necessity, like bread and water.

Š www.jessicahilltout.com This project changed my life.

It took on proportions that I could never have imagined. It was a self-funded labour of love that I embarked on with my father. I love Africa and he loves football. I took the photos and did the travelling. He brought to life the book and its concept. The aim of AMeN was to shine the light on all those in the shadow of the World cup, far from the big stadiums and the corporate carnival-nature of the event. To embrace Africa and everything that makes it unique. To speak of the authenticity and sheer ingeniousness of a continent that manages to do so much with so little. To capture people with simple needs and huge hearts. To express football in its purest form.

I was never much of a football fan, but I've always loved Africa. eight months were spent on the road in 10 African countries with my Hasselblad, 80mm lens, digital camera, printer, log book and a stock of deflated footballs.

I just followed my gut and felt my way through villages in search of all those little details that speak of Africa's great football passion. For me all the big stories are in the small details. People were incredibly helpful and once I had gained their trust they gave me more than I could ever have imagined.

48

When I got home my head and heart were full of life lessons and beautiful memories. This project was living inside me.

It was essentially a promise I made to myself after being deeply touched by the people whose faces adorn the pages of my book. The dream came true thanks to Adidas and other spontaneous donors such as chris bean and Sarah caplan.
