University of Texas Task Force Recommends Allowing Concealed Guns in Class

AUSTIN, Texas, (December 10, 2015)--A Campus Carry Policy Working Group recommended that students at the University of Texas at Austin be barred from carrying concealed handguns in the dorms, but should be allowed to carry firearms inside their classrooms A "campus carry" law that goes into effect next August limits the group's options to endorse the measure.

The recommendation coincides with a controversial "mock mass shooting" demonstration planned near the campus grounds. The event would include dummy firearms, actors role-playing victims, and the sounds of gunfire broadcast over a loudspeaker, organizers said.

The task force members said they could not recommend prohibiting handguns from classrooms due to legal conflicts with the pending state law, Bill 11, which was signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in June — despite their personal concerns, and "overwhelming sentiment" that campus is not an appropriate place for firearms.

"Let me be perfectly clear about this, every member of the working group thinks that we would be best if we did not have handguns in the classroom," Steven Goode, a professor at the university's school of law and chair of the task force, said at a news conference.

A group called “Gun Free UT” has expressed the opposition of thousands of students and faculty have also spoken out against anti-gun protest, saying that they believe the goal is intimidation.

NEW YORK, (January , 2015)--Immediately following the Newtown shooting, shares of gun makers Smith & Wesson (SWHC) and Sturm, Ruger (RGR) dipped, along with shares of outdoor goods retailers Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) and Cabela's (CAB) -- two companies that generate a substantial revenue from sales of weapons.

Since Olin is a chemical company that also owns Winchester Ammunition, and distributes its ammunition under the Super X, Supreme, Supreme Elite, AA, and Winlite brand names, among others, it represents the least risk to trading volatility.

The company trades at a P/E ratio of 13, and Winchester only represents between 20% to 25% of the business, so Olin is actually primarily a chemical company, and not a pure play on firearms stocks.

Currently, Smith & Wesson trades at a P/E ratio of 9.4, but . With the regulatory risk of gun control very high in the past year, Smith & Wesson looks cheap.

Finally Sturm, Rugger (NYSE: RGR) manufacturers firearms under the Rugger name from its facilities in Prescott, A., and Newport, NH. The risk of gun control has resulted in record sales and stock surges.

Ruger shareholders benefit from a variable dividend that fluctuates based on a set percentage of the company's earnings.

For the first quarter, the company paid out $0.49 per share, or roughly 40% of net income.

Wound-Care Market Openings

PARIS, (December 9, 2015)-According to Justin Smith, analyst at Societe Generale, the the $5 billion advanced wound care market has four major companies with a combined 55% marketshare: Smith & Nephew (SNN), Kinetic Concepts (KC), Molnlycke, and ConvaTec. The analyst advised that none of these players is focused on advanced wound, care as they are diversified businesses, involved in a number of medical markets.

For example, Smith & Nephew, is not a recommended buy due to perceived material weakness in its surgical and wound management sectors. Smith is concerned about management’s tendency to spend too heavily on acquisitions, such as the $782 million cash purchase of Healthpoint in late 2012. “We think it overpaid,” said Smith.

To find pure plays in the overlooked advanced wound-care market, some savvy investors have focused on smaller companies whose strength lies in product innovation to address immediate market demands.

Among the more highly regarded stocks in the market is Derma Sciences Inc. (DSCI), a smaller medical technology company focused on advanced wound care.

Derma Sciences provides a suite of dressings containing Manuka organic honey which clinical studies have proven to be effective when applied to skin wounds and ulcers.

Recently, Derma Sciences concluded an exclusive licensing agreement for products in the synthetic skin sector, projected to be a $500 million market.

Branded as AmnioMatrix, the skin replacements are expected to reach the market in the third quarter of this year.

Edward J. Quilty, Derma Sciences’s Chairman and CEO, says the company views the skin substitute products as an important component of his strategy to offer a full products suite to address the fast-growing advanced wound care market.

Wound care investors should also be aware that Derma Sciences has yet to report a profit, and this situation is unlikely to change dramatically.

DermaTrax Introduces Self-Diagnostic Smart Dressing

DYKE PARADE, Ireland, (December 7, 2015) -- Researchers have developed a new "smart dressing" can automatically report the status of patient wounds while in place, lowering the need for regular visual inspections by staff. According to the device's creators, it's not only more convenient than standard dressings, but could also reduce costs associated with wound treatment.

The driver behind the new tech, known as DermaTrax, is to make wound care more comfortable for the patient and reduce physician workload. DermaTrax achieves these goals by eliminating the need to repeatedly remove the dressing in order to conduct visual inspections.

"This hi-tech dressing will generate significant savings in healthcare costs, due to reduced clinical inspection time and shorter hospital stays as a result of faster wound healing," said Fleming Medical CEO, Mark Fleming.
