It is believed that one of the earliest examples of footwear worn on the Indian Subcontinent was a sandal made out of wood. During the Buddisht period before Khadau (Paduka), people wore strapped sandals. Indian kings wore sandals that were ornamented with precious jewels, they were more of an ornamentation than foot protection. Later, the importance of covering toes became important and people started making shoes that protected the feet from getting injured. It was only when covering the top of the feet and toes became important, Mojaris were found.

Mojaris are also known as Sindhi Mojaris (as they were first made in the Sindh region of Pakistan) , traditionally made by artisans using tanned leather.

What makes mojaris different are the designs and embellishments used to decorate them. Bright threads are used for making design embellishments. Designs are sewn on top. Brass nails are also used for sewing designs, especially on the edges. Tiny mirrors are pasted onto the leather/cotton skin. Even bells, ceramic beads and corey shells are used for making the designs look well decorated and intricate. For a long time there has been a conflict or a confusion in understanding whether Mojaris and Jutis are one and the same thing or are they foundationally different? Well, the commonality between these two types of footwears is that they originated as a typical style of handcrafted footwear produced in South Asia. Mojaris especially were a footwear made especially for the royalty and then later, trickled down to what it is today.
