Boating at Sussex Inlet

“There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …” Kenneth Graham, The Wind in the Willows

The first time you visit Sussex Inlet, be careful – you could easily lose your heart to this tranquil water wonderland.

S

ussex Inlet has long been a place of pilgrimage for city folk seeking an escape from their frenetic lives. This drive leads to boating and surfing heaven with a great network of waterways that lead to the sea. Look at an aerial view or map of the ‘island’ town and you’ll soon understand why messing around in boats is a major aspect of the Sussex lifestyle. The Inlet itself is the waterway that curls sinuously inland from the ocean to St Georges Basin. Add to this the extensive network of residential canals and you have the perfect environment for a laid-back boating experience. If you’re a boatie, surfer, fisher or simply want to escape – you can lose yourself here and hope never to be found. The township of Sussex Inlet at the mouth of the estuary has everything the holidaymaker could want – fantastic accommodation, hire boats to explore the canals, clubs, shops, cafes and a cinema. A short drive away are the small villages of Swanhaven, Cudmirrah and Berrara that offer a range of beach and lake activities. Drive distance: approx. 31 Km
