Cambewarra • Kangaroo Valley From Nowra take the winding road over Cambewarra Mountain, through rainforest ferns and tall timbers. Stop for tea at Cambewarra Lookout and if you’re lucky, watch the hang gliders taking off.

he view from here, over the coastal plains out to the ocean is simply spectacular. Follow the road down to the village through a lush rural and bush landscape, looking out for lyrebirds that may dart across the road in front of you.

The Kangaroo Valley village has a charm all its own, with historic buildings, galleries, quaint shops, great cafes and the delightful stone pub. Unique to the Valley, the famous stone Hampden Bridge spans the Kangaroo River and Australia’s oldest suspension bridge. Nearby is the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Settlement Museum Park housing old buildings, machinery and artifacts from the 19th century.

Take time to drive to the Upper Kangaroo Valley area to be amazed by the dramatic backdrop of the escarpment or paddle a canoe on the river.

At Seven Mile Beach National Park you’ll find a picnic area and walking track.

East of Shoalhaven Heads is Coolangatta, renowned as the birthplace of European settlement in the district.

Here the Coolangatta Estate complex has preserved the historic buildings and runs an eight-hole golf course.

It is the home of the multi-awarded Coolangatta Estate Winery and restaurant.

Bomaderry • North Nowra West Cambewarra Just four kilometres north of Nowra, Bomaderry is the last station on the South Coast railway line.

A

thriving township, it has several cafes, a supermarket and is a popular family destination with a wide range of recreational venues. Here you’ll find the aquatic centre, ten-pin bowling, indoor basketball stadium, tennis courts, a gym as well as several excellent sports fields. Just off the Princes Highway is the Bomaderry Creek Walk, a long-time favourite for all levels of fitness and taking in some spectacular bushland. Part of the walk is wheelchair accessible.

If you care for a hit of golf, along Illaroo Road from the Nowra bridge, the Nowra golf course is tucked away on the edge of the Shoalhaven River. Further along is North Nowra which has a small shopping centre and

gym. Nearby, the Grotto Walk overlooks the river and descends the escarpment to the riverbank.

Continue along Illaroo Road out into the rural area to sample some more local wines and head out to Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon which is open to the public on Sundays, 10.30am–4pm. Terara • Numbaa Comerong Island Drive through dairy country along atmospheric roads that run beside the Shoalhaven River, with spectacular views to Cambewarra Mountain and the escarpment.

he rural township of Terara is a short drive east along the Shoalhaven River. The site of the original settlement, it was abandoned following severe floods and re-established at the current site of Nowra.

If you have time, take a stroll around the streets of charming weatherboard cottages and drink in the historic atmosphere. A short distance further along is the dairy district, Numbaa – the site of the area’s first farm.

Continuing your drive along this route, you’ll arrive at the ferry which will take you across to the fascinating Comerong Island. These days, the island is a nature reserve and if you follow the road you’ll arrive at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, across from Shoalhaven Heads. Throw in a line for some great beach and estuary fishing.

ou’ll find villages of traditional holiday cottages alongside fabulous architect-designed coastal homes. The villages are friendly and casual, with a great sun and surf vibe, but each one still retaining its own unique character.

Greenwell Point is seafood central for the northern Shoalhaven. A small fleet of trawlers heads out daily to bring in the catch and its waters are famous for magnificent oysters.

Surrounded on three sides by river, beach and lake is the settlement of Culburra Beach, a well-established popular beach destination, its main beach is patrolled in summer for a good surfing experience. Nightlife is taken care of with licensed restaurants, a club, cafes and shops. A haven for birds, Lake Wollumboola (part of Jervis Bay National Park) is a shallow, saline lagoon that provides a winter habitat for endangered migratory birds and a refuge for many waterbirds, including black swans.

with its retro fibro holiday homes sitting side-by-side with grander modern homes. This area has been a favourite of several generations of holidaymakers over the years, with people coming back again and again.

There are lots of swimming spots to suit every level of skill and great fishing for the whole family. If you’re up for a bushwalk, head out on one of the tracks that start at Abrahams Bosom Reserve. You can take the short return walk out to where the S.S. Merimbula was wrecked, or the nine kilometre Coomies circuit.

Drive out to the Point Perpendicular lighthouse and catch sight of migrating whales in season or if the nor’easter is blowing, spend some time at one of the sheltered Jervis Bay beaches on Beecroft Peninsula, such as Long Beach or Honeymoon Bay, ideal for swimming and fantastic snorkelling.

Also on the northern side of Jervis Bay are Callala Bay, Callala Beach and Myola offering safe beach swimming and dolphin sightings. There is a sailing club at Callala Bay as well as a regional boat ramp.

s a marine park, the Bay is home to abundant wildlife including seals, sea eagles, penguins, seabirds, the resident dolphins and, of course, the migrating whales who drop in on their annual journey along the coast. Several operators offer popular dolphin-watching cruises in the bay and, in season, you can catch a boat and head out to take a look at the antics of the humpback whales.

With so many sheltered beaches strung along the Jervis Bay coastline, you’ll be spoiled for choice with swimming and snorkelling spots.

Hyams Beach is reputed to have the whitest sand in the world and, combined with its crystal waters, offers a sublime beach experience.

Other favourites include Greenfields Beach in the Jervis Bay National Park and Murrays Beach in Booderee National Park (a car fee applies).

For safe cycling, a popular route known locally as ‘The Bay and Basin Ride’ runs from Moona Creek, first to the Vincentia shops on the Jervis Bay foreshore cycle path along scenic Collingwood Beach, and then continues cross-country on the off-road cycle path to Sanctuary Point.

A favourite destination is the Huskisson township with its main street running down to the shoreline and the wharf on Currambene Creek that’s always picture perfect. Indulge yourself with lunch at one of the diverse selection of eateries and enjoy a coastal shopping expedition.

Also known for its history, Huskisson was once the site of a thriving ship-building industry. On the former site of the shipyards, Lady Denman Heritage Complex has a permanent museum collection as well as an art gallery showing exhibitions by local artists. Also in the complex you can buy Aboriginal art and crafts and, if your timing is right, watch a boomerang throwing demonstration. Always popular is the large pond with a huge selection of ocean fish species and the mangrove boardwalk to see these fascinating trees close up.

The townships of St Georges Basin and Sanctuary Point are located on St Georges Basin, a large, shallow lake, ideal for all types of boating. And for a tranquil walk along the foreshore from Paradise Beach to Palm Beach, the Basin Walking Track will take 40 minutes each way. The beaches along the walk are popular for swimming and fishing and offer access for sailing and water skiing.

f you’re escaping city crowds and stress, Bendalong is just the place.

While you’re there, check out the colony of giant stingrays that hang out near the boat ramp. Head further south to discover the laidback village of Manyana as well as Cunjurong Point and Berringer Lake, which is located directly on the edge of the lake for boat access to Lake Conjola.

If you’re into fishing, boating, water skiing or sailing, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the expansive waterways of Lake Conjola. The township at the mouth of the estuary is just 15 minutes’ walk along the boardwalk from the surf beach. Pause for scenic views of the beach and lake from the viewing platform along the way.

For a change of scenery, take a day trip and picnic at Granite Falls and Boyd Lookout, both located in Morton National Park, to view Lake Conjola from a different perspective. Before venturing out, check that the gravel road is in good condition as it can deteriorate in bad weather.

Pigeon House Mountain Didthul You can see the distinctive outline of Pigeon House Mountain Didthul against the horizon from miles away as you travel along the south coast.

Drive off the Princes Highway either from Milton or south of Burrill Lake onto Wheelbarrow Road, around 30 kilometres. The gravel road passes through forests of spotted gum, bloodwood and silvertop ash to arrive at the base of the walking track, a picnic area with tables, barbeque and toilet facilities.

The return walk to the summit takes around four hours and is in four stages with the first part a steep 800 metres, then a flat kilometre followed by a steep 500 metre climb and then onto a series of steel ladders attached to the cliff face. Around 8000 people climb Pigeon House Mountain Didthul each year to experience the exhilaration of the climb and the reward of the magnificent views from the summit. Spread out below are rugged cliffs and gorges carved out by the

Clyde River and its tributaries, as well as Byangee Walls and The Castle. On a clear day, you can see as far to the north as Point Perpendicular and Mount Dromedary in the south.

Cafe culture in Milton

Travelling to the Milton, Narrawallee and Mollymook area is like entering another world where life is just that bit more laid-back and people don’t take themselves too seriously.

With its arts, crafts and designer stores and excellent cafes and restaurants, Milton is a great base for exploring the surrounding coastal and hinterland attractions. No trip to Milton would be complete without visiting the 120-year-old fig tree at the northern end of town.

From Milton you can do the loop and head east to Mollymook first, taking a short detour to Narrawallee Creek Nature Reserve, which includes Pattimores Lagoon with its calm, shallow waters, mangroves and the mudflats, an important breeding site for birds.

Mollymook is golfers’ heaven with two great golf courses connected with Mollymook Golf Club – one beachside and the other on top of the hill. Watch out for whales and other oceanic marvels from the Bannister Point lookout.

There’s so much to do at Ulladulla, but a good place to start is to hang out around the harbour or stroll along the foreshore and breakwall, to watch the fishing boats unload their catch or indulge in the guilty pleasure of fish and chips on the grass.

ou can head up to Warden Head for uninterrupted views of the coast to look out for whales during the season or follow the cultural trail of One Track for All. This is a two-kilometre track that links Indigenous culture with white history.

Ulladulla is synonymous with seafood and you can buy fresh off the boat from the cooperative at the harbour. One highlight on the calendar is Ulladulla’s celebration of its Italian fishing heritage with the muchloved Blessing of the Fleet festival on the harbour.

In a traditional ritual, fishing boats are decorated and blessed to ensure crew safety and bountiful catches.

National Parks and Nature Reserves BOODEREE NATIONAL PARK Booderee National Park is situated 35 kilometres southeast of Nowra. Booderee National Park won two Gold Medals in the 2009 New South Wales Tourism Awards – the best tourism attraction and best Indigenous tourism experience in the state. At the National 2009 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Hobart, Booderee won the Gold Medal for the best Indigenous Tourism in Australia and a highly commended in the best tourism attraction category.

In keeping with the protection of the environment, spear guns, hand spears, dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted in the reserve. For enquiries regarding the National Park, camping at Green Patch, Bristol Point or Cave Beach call into the Visitors Centre or ph 4443 0977. Fees apply.

Murrays Beach: Ample parking and a boat ramp give access to popular fishing spots. No dogs or other domestic animals are permitted in the area. Of interest is the ruined Cape St George Lighthouse, Stoney Creek Road. It was built in the wrong place and proved to be a navigational hazard, luring boats to their doom on the rocky coastline.

The Navy was requested to shell it.

Botanic Garden: Located 2km along Cave Beach Road, the Garden has an emphasis on the coastal flora of south eastern Australia. Facilities include nature walks, toilets, BBQ(e) and both open and covered picnic areas. Open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10am to 5pm, closed Christmas Day. ph 4442 1122.

Comerong Island Nature Reserve The reserve protects the largest remaining sarea of littoral rainforest on the south coast, outstanding wetlands and is home to a variety of protected wading birds. Excellent for recreational fishing, swimming, surfing and birdwatching.

10km east of Nowra via Comerong Island car ferry. 2WD in dry weather only.

Conjola National Park This coastal park features extensive forests beside beautiful lakes and estuaries and large areas of woodland and heath that become a mass of wildflowers in spring.

You’ll find a picnic area and walking track at Monument Beach and a walking track at Fishermans Rock. Access from Cudmirrah and Berrara on unsealed roads.

Jervis Bay Marine Park The bay offers beaches, rocky platforms and reefs, extensive seagrass beds, estuaries, deep-water cliffs with caves. Dolphins are a regular sight in the crystal-clear waters. Activities include scuba diving, swimming, surfing, boating and fishing. Access from Princes Highway.

Sections of the park fringe Jervis Bay, St Georges Basin and ocean beaches. The area is rich in Aboriginal heritage, includes important wetlands and preserves a flourishing diversity of plants and animals. It lies next to Booderee National Park.

Beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies surround the beautiful Durras Lake.

At Greenfields Beach, you’ll find a picnic area as well as short walks.

Meroo National Park This park features a wide variety of forest types including spotted gum and adjoins the largely natural Tabourie, Burrill, Termeil and Meroo coastal lakes.

You can enjoy bushwalking, fishing, swimming and canoeing.

Morton National Park Features sandstone scenery on a grand scale. In the south, the park offers views of the coastline and the Budawang wilderness areas.

Remote bushwalking for experienced walkers especially in the Budawangs, with walks at George Boyd Lookout and Granite Falls. More leisurely walks can be enjoyed around Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley in the north.

Murramarang Aboriginal Area The headland complex of Aboriginal middens is important to local Aboriginal communities as well as being scientifically significant. The site, the largest on the south coast and one of only three older than 10,000 years, contains a dense concentration of stone objects, shells and bones. Access from Princes Highway at Termeil.

Explore Durras Lake and Durras Mountain on a range of walking tracks. Access from Princes Highway on mostly unsealed roads.Vehicle entry fee applies.

Narrawallee Creek Nature Reserve Explore beautiful estuaries, coastal forests, quiet beaches and honeycombed rock platforms. Enjoy fishing, swimming, surfing and bushwalking. Access north of Ulladulla.

Seven Mile Beach National Park The sweep of Seven Mile Beach is rimmed with sand dunes and low forest inhabited by birds, possums and small mammals. Access south of Gerringong on Gerroa Road.

CURRAMBENE FOREST BIKE TRAILS Shoalhaven Bicycle User Group has produced a map showing several trails that start at the southern end of Worrigee Road, 9.8km from Nowra Visitors Centre, and at Callala Bay Road, north of the village.

Trails are gravel roads, fire trails and bush tracks.

Most trails are impassable after heavy rain, due to sticky red clay and boggy areas.

The Royal Australian Navy invites you, your family and friends to visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

The Museum houses the nation’s most comprehensive collection of Naval aircraft ranging from a World War 1 Sopwith Pup that flew from RAN cruisers in the North Sea; through to the current ship-borne helicopters that now operate with the Fleet. The main focus of the museum is a display of RAN fighters, anti-submarine bombers and helicopters that have formed the Fleet Air Arm since 1948, covering the Navy’s involvement in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and peace-keeping and disaster relief operations over the last six decades. Artefacts such as engines, ordnance and flying helmets are displayed in the many exhibition areas and the Museum’s art gallery houses a unique collection of original works by famed artists and photographers.

FACILITIES The collection is housed in a 6,000 m2 purpose built hangar and includes a gift shop, art gallery and helicopter flight simulator. Full disabled access is available on both levels with a lift to the viewing balcony overlooking the runways. The function centre will be reopening soon for your convenience.

NEW ATTRACTIONS The Sea King helicopter ‘Shark 07’, a Gulf War veteran from the former 817 Squadron, and the ex RAN and RNZAF Douglas Skyhawk two seater jet fighterbomber ‘880’ have now joined the collection.
