Four years ago Preston was looking for anyone to come out and join the team. He recruited some kids off the hockey team who didn’t play a spring sport. He had 10 freshman come out for the team, but most had never picked up a lacrosse stick before. It didn’t matter, he just needed bodies. One of the few players with extensive lacrosse experience also happened to be one of the best players in the Shore: junior Matt Frost. The current Quinnipiac University starter helped Preston build a foundation, and the Roses went 7-8 that season to bounce back from a 3-12 campaign the year before.

hen Kevin Preston left his position as an assistant at Manasquan to become the head coach at St. Rose prior to the 2014 season, the first objective he had was to make sure the Purple Roses survived.
Around that time St. Rose had roughly 13 kids in the entire boys lacrosse program and was on the fringe of folding. The Belmar school is small to begin with, and without a football team to use as a pool to recruit potential players and with a baseball program that dominates the spring season, bringing the numbers up was a huge challenge.
Through relentless effort and with a vision to build a competitive program in the Shore, Preston guided the Purple Roses to their best season ever in 2017. Four years after taking over a program on the verge of being eliminated, St. Rose set a program record for wins in a season and scored the biggest upset in the history of the Shore Conference Tournament. For his efforts in leading St. Rose to new heights, Preston has been selected as the 2017 Shore Sports Network Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year.
“Just seeing the process come to fruition this year was a pretty incredible experience,” Preston said. “Four years ago most of the kids were just athletes who were new to lacrosse. We were building lacrosse players. We have an incredible parent group that supports us and a great coaching staff. It’s cool to see how it came from almost nothing.”
St. Rose went 7-10 in 2015, Frost’s senior season, but stumbled last year with a relatively young group to go 5-11. Coming into this season, however, Preston saw a squad that was ready to take the next step. “In March we could see that we now had a group of lacrosse players,” Preston said. “We were able to come into this season with a deep team, not just one or two players, and that made the difference.”
One of the players who was recruited to the team with no prior experience ended up setting the program’s single-season goals record this season. Senior attackman Chris Bormida scored 55 goals to break Frost’s previous record of 53, and did so with just three years of lacrosse experience. As a freshman Bormida was a baseball player. “He came out sophomore year and was the definition of most improved every year,” Preston said. “He went from scoring around seven goals to 13 as a junior to 55 this year. His hard work was incredible.”
Senior attackman Griffin McDermott started as a freshman in the midfield, then moved to defense and finally settled in as an attackman. He scored 41 goals with 27 assists to tie Bormida for the team lead in points with 68. McDermott was one of the players who led the

“His conditioning, his speed, the intangibles, his determination – he’s everything you want from a complete attackman,” said Manasquan head coach Sean Cunningham. “He’s the kind of kid that brings it to a different level come game time. He’s a skilled shooter and a pure scorer in that sense. I keep coming back to the phrase, ‘he has a motor’, because it’s true. The kid goes all game and never stops.”

or all the talent on Manasquan’s roster if an opposing coach was given the chance to take one player out of the equation if would most certainly be No. 4.
One of the state’s elite goal scorers, senior attackman Jarrett Birch keyed Manasquan’s rise to power not only in the Shore Conference but on the state level as well. In 2017 Birch was nearly unstoppable, leading New Jersey with 86 goals while adding 19 assists to finish with 105 points. His play over the course of the season helped Manasquan accomplish several goals, including winning the Shore Conference Tournament for the first time in program history. For his impressive statistics, ability to come through in clutch moments and importance to the Warriors’ program, Birch has been selected as the 2017 Shore Sports Network Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.

The Class B South Player of the Year as well as a first-team All-Shore selection by the Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association, Birch was a major reason why the Warriors finished 21-2 and claimed their third straight division title, won the SCT for the first time and reached the South Jersey Group II final for the second year in a row. He scored at least three goals in 19 of 23 games and had multiple points in 21 of 23 games. Birch had seven games scoring five or more goals, including a nine-goal, three-assist performance in a win over Lacey. He scored seven goals in wins over St. John Vianney and Wall, tallied six times against Seneca in the state tournament and had five goals in wins over Ridge, Jackson Liberty and Holmdel.
What makes Birch’s totals even more impressive is that he did it on a team with multiple scoring options, including his sophomore brother Canyon, who scored 77 goals and led Manasquan with 106 points. It helped that teams couldn’t focus all of their attention on Jarrett Birch because of the Warriors’ balance, but Birch was unquestionably the go-to threat for Manasquan.
Birch’s career numbers put him among the elite offensive players in Shore Conference history. His 266 career goals are seconn all time in the Shore behind Southern’s Dylan Jinks (272) and his 351 career points are third behind CBA legend Tommy Duerr (431) and Jinks (421). His 266 goals are also third in state history according to LaxRecords.com.

recruiting effort within the school, and along with defenseman Hunter Harms and goalie Robbie Brugnoli formed the senior nucleus of the team.
St. Rose started the season 3-0 and stood at 8-4 through the month of April. Among those victories was a 12-5 win over a solid Holmdel team. The win that made everybody in the Shore take notice, however, came on May 6 in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament. Brugnoli made 25 saves, Bormida scored four times and McDermott had three goals and one assist as the Purple Roses, seeded No. 14, took down No. 3 Southern, 8-7, for the biggest upset in SCT history.
“That was definitely the kind of game we look back on and see how it was everything we had been working toward,” Preston said. “We had been able to get over the hump against the middle group of teams but to win over a team like Southern that had won the SCT recently, it was the cherry on top of the season.”
“Going into the season we didn’t have that expectation. We didn’t know how good we could be until halfway through the season when we started to realize how talented we were and that we had a big win or two in us. In the Southern game it all came together at the right time. If we play them 10 more times we might lose 10 in a row, but on that day we proved how good we can be when everything comes together.” St. Rose fell to St. John Vianney in the SCT quarterfinals and was edged by Oratory Prep in the first round of the NJSIAA Non-Public B playoffs, but those defeats certainly did not sour a season that saw the Purple Roses finally break through.
“My message to the players after the season is that we’re not building anymore, we’re going to challenge and fight to get into the tournament every year,” Preston said. “We’ve gotten over the hump and now it’s time to do more and prove ourselves in the Shore Conference.”

Birch’s leadership ability was also crucial to Manasquan’s success. Birch was just a sophomore and not an official captain during Cunningham’s first year in 2015, but quickly became a player his teammates turned to.
“That year we decided to start a bunch of talented sophomores and see what happened and he was one of the only known quantities coming back,” Cunningham said. “So even back then he was looked at as a leader. Since then he’s been a two-year captain and a big presence for us.”
Manasquan is the oldest lacrosse program in the Shore and has experienced a great resurgence in the last three seasons, winning an SCT title and a state sectional title. Birch and the rest of this year’s senior class has led the way, and an exciting group of sophomores helped buoy the program as they ascended to a top 10 team in New Jersey. Manasquan didn't reach the level it is at today because of one player, but Birch is indeed the face of the franchise.
“His impact is considerable,” Cunningham said. “I’m a big proponent of the program being the biggest thing, but you have to take time to appreciate individuals, especially when they set records like this. He’s the first first-team all-state player from Manasquan, he has the most goals in a season, the most career goals, most career points. That in and of itself is very important. Kids look up to him and say I want to be like No. 4, I want to be part of that program. It’s always nice to have an individual to put up there and be the face of a program. There are so many important factors in the success of this program but having a prolific attackman definitely creates interest and energy.”
A two-time first-team All-Shore selection by both the SCLCA and Shore Sports Network and a two-time Class B South Player of the Year, Birch will continue his career at Division I Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.

NORTH ALL-STAR BIOS Name: Drew Dunn School: Freehold Township Position: Attack
Highlights: Dunn scored 40 goals and added 53 assists for 93 points to help the Patriots to one of the most successful seasons in program history. His 93 points were the third highest total in the Shore Conference and top 25 in New Jersey. Tallied a season-best nine points on two goals and seven assists in a win over Neptune. Had a goal and two assists when Freehold Township beat Washington Township in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV quarterfinals. A first-team all-Class A North selection by the coaches association, Dunn will continue his career at Widener University.
Name: Josh Nastarowicz School: Freehold Township Position: Attack
Highlights: Nastarowicz was the Patriots’ leader in goals with 44 and tied for third on the team with 73 points to help Freehold Township to a 13-6 record and the program’s first trip to the NJSIAA sectional semifinals. He registered a season-high eight points on six goals and two assists in a win versus Marlboro. A first-team all-Class A North selection by the coaches association.

Name: Nick Casner School: CBA Position: Attack
Highlights: One of the top playmakers in the Shore Conference, Casner amassed 80 points on 32 goals and 48 assists to help the Colts win the Class A North division title and reach the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals. He had a season-high eight points twice, tallying two goals and six assists vs. Freehold Township and four goals and four assists against Middletown South. Casner had four goals and one assist when the Colts nearly knocked off eventual Tournament of Champions winner Delbarton in a 7-6 loss in the state tournament. Casner finished his career third on CBA’s all-time scoring list with 272 career points. A first-team All-Shore selection by the SCLCA, Casner will continue his career at Division I Siena College.
Name: Alex Werner School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Attack
Highlights: The set-up man in the Bulldogs’ offense, Werner scored 29 goals and had 35 assists for 64 points to help Rumson win the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II championship. Rumson also reached the final of the Shore Conference Tournament. Werner had a season-high eight points on three goals and five assists in an SCT semifinal win over SJV. A first-team Class B North selection by the coaches.
Name: Charlie Curran School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Attack
Highlights: Curran was the leading point producer for the Bulldogs with 73 points on 48 goals and 25 assists, helping Rumson win the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II state sectional title. Highlights: The leading goal scorer for the Bulldogs, Pavluk scored 54 goals Curran had a season-high six goals and eight points in a win over Ocean City and added 14 assists to finish with 68 points. His play helped Rumson win the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II championship in the sectional quarterfinals. In the South Jersey Group II final, Curran while also reaching the Shore Conference Tournament final. Pavluk had a pair of scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in a 5-4 win that sent Rumson seven-point games to highlight his season, scoring five goals with two assists to the Group II championship game. Finished his career with 86 goals and 40 against Wall and scoring six goals with one assist versus Allentown. He concluded assists for 126 points. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class B North his career with 82 goals and 23 assists for 105 points. A first-team Class B North selection by the coaches, Curran will play at Division I Fairfield University and second-team All-Shore pick by the SCLCA, Pavluk will continue his career at next season. Highlights: Ferdinandi scored 24 goals and added 14 assists for 38 points, helping the Patriots reach the NJSIAA sectional semifinal round for the first time in program history. Had a season-best six points in a win over Red Bank and scored a season-high four goals in a victory over Shore. A first-team Class A North and second-team All-Shore pick by the coaches, Ferdinandi will continue his career at Montclair State University.
Name: Nico Lorenzo School: Howell Position: Midfield
Highlights: Lorenzo scored 42 goals and added 22 assists for 62 points while also picking up 51 ground balls for the Rebels. He registered a careerhigh 10 points with seven goals and three assists in a win versus Shore and had a five-goal game against Toms River South. A second-team All-Shore and firstteam Class A North selection by the SCLCA, Lorenzo will continue his career at Wilkes University.
Name: Ryan Madalone School: CBA Position: Midfield
Highlights: Madalone scored seven goals and added six assists for 13 points to help CBA reach the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals and capture the Class A North division title. A first-team Class A North pick by the coaches, Madalone will continue his career at Skidmore College
Name: Bryan Hess School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Midfield
Highlights: One of the top midfielders in New Jersey, Hess returned from an injury suffered last season to post career highs in every offensive category and lead the Bulldogs to the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II sectional title. Hess was second on the team with 51 goals and added 16 assists for 67 points. He had three seven-point games, including an unstoppable performance in the Group II final where he carried Rumson with seven goals in a 12-11 overtime loss. For his career Hess scored 103 goals with 34 assists for 137 career points. A first-team All-Shore and firstteam Class B North selection by the SCLCA, Hess will continue his career at Division I Lafayette College.

Name: Oliver Heins School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Midfield
Highlights: Part of a deep group of midfielders for the Bulldogs, Heins scored 18 goals and totaled 21 points on the season. He had a hat trick in a win over Southern and scored twice versus Ramapo in the Group II championship game. A first-team Class B North selection by the coaches, Heins will play at Massachusetts Institute of Technology next season.
Name: Andrew Walsh School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Midfield
Highlights: Walsh finished the season with 14 goals and 4 assists for 18 points to help Rumson win the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II sectional championship. He had a season-high three goals and four points against St. John Vianney and scored twice in a sectional semifinal win over Somerville.
Name: Brock Zenker School: Middletown North Position: Midfield
Highlights: Zenker scored 40 goals with eight assists for 48 points to lead the Lions and also picked up 41 ground balls. A second-team Class A North selection by the SCLCA.
Name: Sam Hanna School: Ocean Position: Midfield
Highlights: One of the top offensive players in the Shore, Hanna scored 51 goals and added 27 assists for 78 points. He also picked up 44 ground balls. Hanna had a pair of games recording double digit points, scoring eight goals with three assists against Jackson Liberty and scoring five goals with five assists versus Red Bank Catholic. He also scored eight goals in a game against Middletown North. He concluded his career with 138 goals and 85 assists for 223 points while picking up 174 ground balls. A second-team AllShore and second-team Class B North selection by the SCLCA, Hanna will play at Springfield College next season.
Name: Billy DiMaio School: Holmdel Position: Midfield
Highlights: DiMaio led the Hornets in goals with 37 and added 12 assists for a season total of 49 points. He also picked up 93 ground balls to rank second on the team. He scored a season-high five goals in a win over Red Bank and picked up a season-best 13 ground balls versus North Brunswick. A second-team Class B North selection by the SCLCA, DiMaio will continue his career at Chestnut Hill College.

Name: Jack Kaiser School: Middletown South Position: Midfield
Highlights: The leader of the Eagles’ defense, Kaiser helped Middletown South go 9-9 to finish with a .500 record for the first time in the program’s fouryear history. Over the past two seasons Kaiser picked up 191 ground balls, intercepted 29 passes and had 31 takeaways. He also scored two goals and added five assists. A first-team Class A North selection, Kaiser will attend the University of Alabama.

Highlights: The leader of Rumson’s shutdown defense and one of the top defensemen in the state, Jennings spearheaded a unit that allowed just 3.8 goals per game to lead the Bulldogs to the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II sectional championship. In addition to his lockdown defense, Jennings added three goals and one assist. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class B North pick by the SCLCA, Jennings will continue his career at Division I Providence College.
Name: Dan Maloney School: Rumson-Fair Haven Highlights: Murphy picked up 26 ground balls and was a standout on a Freehold Township defense that allowed 6.9 goals per game. He had a season- Position: Defense

Highlights: A versatile weapon in the defensive end for the Patriots, Poole picked up 99 ground balls and also notched 10 points on eight goals and two assists. His play helped Freehold Township finish 13-6 and reach the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV semifinals. Poole had a season-high 12 ground balls against Robbinsville and scored a hat trick in a win over Neptune. He also had two goals when the Patriots beat Washington Township in overtime in the state playoffs. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class A North selection by the SCLCA.
Name: Ean Delehanty School: Shore Position: LSM
Highlights: A ground ball ace for the Blue Devils, Delehanty picked up 127 ground balls while also scoring eight goals with eight assists as one of the top long stick midfielders in the Shore Conference. He had a season-high 10 ground balls against Jackson Liberty and had a hat trick in a win over Barnegat. Delehanty finished his career with 229 ground balls and 41 points. A second-team All-Shore and first-team Class B North selection by the SCLCA.

Name: Jack Cook School: Holmdel Position: Face-offs/Midfield
Highlights: One of the best face-off midfielders in New Jersey, Cook followed up a stellar junior season with a dominant senior year where he won 85 percent of draws. Cook won 305 of his 361 face-offs this season, defeating every opponent he faced by at least 57 percent. He won over 70 percent of draws in 17 of 19 games and won better than 90 percent of the face-off an incredible six times. Cook also finished with 226 ground balls, the second highest total in New Jersey. He had a season-high 20 ground balls against St. John Vianney. Cook was also a key contributor in the offensive end for the Hornets with nine goals and 33 assists for 42 points. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class B North selection by the SCLCA, Cook will continue his career at Division I Mount St. Mary’s University. N ame: Conor Deverin
School: Rumson-Fair Haven Position: Goalie
Highlights: Deverin’s return to the cage as a senior was a major reason Rumson allowed just 3.8 goals per game, won the Class B North division title and the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II sectional title and reached the SCT final. He made 160 saves with a .658 save percentage and a 3.8 goals against average. He had a season-high 17 saves in an 8-7 SCT final loss to Manasquan and came back with 10 saves in a 5-4 win over Manasquan in the South Jersey Group II final. Birch had a whopping 12 points on nine goals and three assists in a win over Lacey and had seven goals in wins over St. John Vianney and Wall. Birch had three goals and two assists in an 11-8 win over eventual Tournament of Champions finalist Moorestown, scored five goals in a win over Ridge and had a combined 11 goals in four games against RumsonFair Haven and CBA. He is Manasquan’s all-time leading scorer with 266 goals and 85 assists for 351 points. His 266 goals are third all-time in New Jersey. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class B South selection, as well as the division Player of the Year, Birch will continue his career at Division I Furman University.

Highlights: Murphy tied for the team lead with 62 points, scoring 29 goals and delivering a team-best 33 assists while also picking up 51 ground balls. He had a season-high eight points with two goals and six assists in a win over Lawrence and scored four goals with three assists in a win against Marlboro. Murphy is Brick Memorial’s career scoring leader with 73 goals and 71 assists for 144 points. A first-team Class A South selection by the SCLCA.

Highlights: A gifted goal scorer with a blistering shot, Johnson scored 66 goals and added 14 assists for 80 points to help the Rams capture the Class A South division title for the fifth year in a row. Johnson had a season-best nine points on six goals and three assists in a win over Brick and scored a season-best seven goals in a win over Toms River South. Over his career Johnson scored 136 goals and added 37 assists for 173 points. A first-team Class A South and secondteam All-Shore selection by the SCLCA.
Highlights: Cagno was a main contributor to a Toms River East team that shook off an 0-5 start to finish 9-9 for its first winning season since 2012. Mulrane concluded his career with 132 goals and 53 assists for 185 points. Highlights: An under-the-radar player during his time at Donovan Catholic, Schlendorf concluded a record-setting career for the Griffins with 33 goals and 17 assists for 50 points. He had one of the best single-game performances in the country this season when he scored nine goals with five assists for 14 points in a win over Barnegat. The 14 points tied for the most in the state this season. He followed that game up by scoring eight goals in a win over Jackson Liberty. Schlendorf finished his career with over 250 points. A second-team Class B South selection by the coaches, Schlendorf will continue his career at Montclair State University.
Highlights: A sturdy defender for a Manasquan defense that allowed just 3.8 goals per game, Mallett caused 32 turnovers and picked up 41 ground balls to help the Warriors secure the Class B South division title, win the Shore Conference Tournament for the first time in program history and reach the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II final. Highlights: One of the top defensemen in the Shore, Belko picked up 57 ground balls while also dishing out six assists to help the Crimson Knights go 12-3 and reach the quarterfinals of both the Shore Conference Tournament and NJSIAA South Jersey Group II playoffs. Belko finished his career with 196 ground balls as a three-year starter. A second-team All-Shore and first-team Class B South selection by the SCLCA, Belko will continue his career at Monmouth University.

He caused 41 turnovers and picked up 57 ground balls, helping Manasquan capture the Class B South division title, win the Shore Conference Tournament for the first time in program history and reach the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II final. LeBlanc led a Warriors defensive unit that yielded just 3.8 goals per game. A first-team All-Shore and first-team Class B South selection by the SCLCA, LeBlanc will continue his career at Division I Loyola University.
