W
ELCOME TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES OF THE 2022 SHORE CONFERENCE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT.
The year 1937 featured the Hindenburg disaster in nearby Lakehurst, the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the start of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s second term, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and the premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” A gallon of gas cost 10 cents, the average price for a new car was $760 and the average American made $1780 a year. The year 1937 also saw the first ever Shore Conference Boys Basketball Tournament with Keyport defeating Atlantic Highlands 31-22 in the championship game. Certainly, a lot has changed in the 85 years since but winning the SCT title remains a goal of all 48 schools that make up the Shore Conference of High Schools. The girls division of the SCT began in 1972 and tonight the 50th champion will emerge from a field that had five teams ranked in the state’s top twenty just a week ago. Winning the SCT is often harder than winning an NJSIAA title and this year will likely prove to be no different. The Shore Sports Network is proud to be a part of what is truly the highlight of the basketball season in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Special thanks to tournament directors Nick Pizzulli (boys), Toms Stark (girls) and Randy Westrol (assistant) for their efforts in overseeing the near two-week event.

ow good has St. John Vianney been d u r in g it s d o m in a n t 2 0 2 1 - 2 2 s e a s o n ?
The Lancers – who have been ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation this year – jumped at the chance to pick up a game Sunday in Delaware against the No. 1 team in the nation. That was while sporting an unbeaten record, one day after winning a conference quarterfinal game and two days before the conference semifinal game. St. John Vianney is about to play some of New Jersey’s best teams over the next three weeks and decided that would not be quite enough of a challenge for this group. Sidwell Friends of Washington, D.C. handed St. John Vianney its first loss since January 2020, but it was important for coach Dawn Karpell to challenge her team with the best possible opponent. After all, the Lancers just got down blowing out two opponents that were ranked No. 2 in the state: Saddle River Day, 76-51, on Feb. 6 and Rutgers Prep, 87-48, a week later. The Lancers are led by Princeton University commit Madison St. Rose (22.0 points, 3.5 steals per game) and junior standout Zoe Brooks (17.6 points, 3.8 assists, 3.56 steals), who transferred into the program from Trenton Catholic. Seniors Megan Cahalan and Ashley O’Connor have plugged into important

roles, while junior Janie Bachmann offers the lineup some versatility. With plenty more talent off the bench, including sophomore Julia Karpell, junior Bre Delaney and junior Mikaela Hubbard, St. John Vianney features eight players who have scored at least 100 points this season. After winning the unofficial Shore Conference championship in 2021, this Lancers squad is hoping to add a second official SCT championship in three years and fourth in the last seven years including the 2021 title. SJV has won a record 14 SCT championships, double the next closest team (Neptune, seven), and has is playing in the title game for the sixth straight season.

anasquan had to settle for the No. 3 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament because of a loss to Red Bank Catholic in December and for the next six weeks, the Warriors got better and better and got a chance to prove it in Tuesday’s Shore Conference Tournament semifinal game. Facing a Caseys squad that beat them, 55-36, in the WOBM Christmas Classic championship game, the Warriors flipped the script with a 51-30 win over Red Bank Catholic in which Manasquan never trailed. With Tuesday’s win, Manasquan has won 19 straight instate games since the Dec. 30 loss to Red Bank Catholic and have rallied around its senior core. Mary Donnelly has put her versatility on display throughout the
tournament, particularly in the last two games. Donnelly – averaging 10.3 points per game, 6.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the season – has gone for 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game over the last two and her defense vs. McDonald’s All-American Justine Pissott was the central to Manasquan’s Tuesday win over RBC. Fellow seniors Georgia Heine, Brooke Hollawell and Dorothy Lofreddo have also been huge for Manasquan over the course of the season, and Hollawell’s progression in recovering from a torn ACL suffered last March has had a lot to do with Manasquan’s improvement. Sophomores Hope Masonius and Katie Collins are the up-and-comers in the lineup and have already made their presence felt. Junior Rylyn Orlando also provides some
production off the bench, as well as plenty of defensive energy. Manasquan won its first Shore Conference Tournament title in 2014, which began a run of three titles in five years. Since the 2017-18 title, Manasquan did not reach the championship game until this season, giving the Warriors six appearances in the final since 2012 – five of which have come under current head coach Lisa Kukoda.

A
bout week shy of one year ago to the day, Marlboro was on the c u s p o f w in n in g i t s f i r s t ever Shore Conference championship, a l b e it what would have been an un o f f i c i a l o n e . The Mustangs went into Manasquan’s gym, took an undefeated Warriors team into overtime and only lost the game in the final second of extra time, with Manasquan completing its perfect season with a 58-56. While Manasquan celebrated perfection, Marlboro suffered another heartbreak. The Mustangs are led by a core of seniors who have been integral players in each of the last three seasons – the last two of which ended with devastating losses. For Jack Seidler, Jonathan Spatola & Jay Ratner the sting of those two losses – the overtime defeat to Manasquan and the buzzer-beating loss to South

Brunswick in the 2020 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV championship game – has stuck with them and pushed them to reach another championship game. This time, though, it is Marlboro that has the senior experience, as well as the motivation to win the program’s first ever postseason tournament championship. Seidler, Spatola and Ratner were the key cogs in carrying Marlboro into the championship game with its come-from-behind, 45-37, slugfest win over Christian Brothers Academy on Thursday night. The entire lineup, however – which also includes seniors Zack Molod, and Vincent Spatola – can score, evidenced by an 85-44 win over Jackson Memorial in the quarterfinals in which all five starters scored at least 12 points. Marlboro hopes its senior experience and the prospect of winning the program’s first ever Shore Conference Tournament title will provide an edge, but it will again have to overcome Manasquan and its new-look roster to get it done. Marlboro’s last foray into the SCT final was a loss to Mater Dei Prep in 2017, but this time, the Mustangs are banking on the higher seed and the three-year struggle paying off with a championship.

wo months before the current season even started, Manasquan’s hopes for another Shore Conference championship took a major hit when star senior Ben Roy suffered a torn ACL in an October fall league game. The Warriors were already gearing up to be a young, inexperienced team around Roy and without the two-time Shore Conference Player of the Year, 2021-22 had the potential to be the dreaded “rebuilding year.” Manasquan might be rebuilding, but the new house is going up fast and it again looks to be state-of-the-art. With four underclassmen around 6-foot-7 senior forward Matt Solomon , the Warriors have already reached the 20-win mark and are set for their fourth straight appearance
in a Shore Conference championship – one of which came in last year’s unofficial Shore Conference postseason. Solomon has been a steady presence in the locker room, the huddle and down low, while the rest of the lineup presents matchup problems all over the floor. Freshman Darius Adams has had a big tournament, averaging 18.5 points in the SCT, including 20-plus points in each of the last two Manasquan wins. The Warriors rookie poured in 26 points in Thursday’s upset win over Red Bank Catholic after putting up 20 vs. Donovan Catholic in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Ryan Frauenheim runs the point for the Warriors and sophomore Alex Konov and freshman Griffin Linstra are, as coach Andrew Bilodeau refers to them, the team’s Swiss Army Knives. Konov scored eight of his 10 points in the first
quarter Thursday to get Manasquan started and Linstra has drawn some of the toughest defensive assignments in the state in his first high school season. After losing to Ranney in the 2019 championship game, Manasquan has won the last two Shore championship games in which it has appeared. The Warriors won their first title in 62 years in 2019 at Monmouth University, captured the 2021 title in its home gym, and will now try to complete a three-peat in Toms River with a team that is set up to contend for more titles in the foreseeable future.
