Head Coach Southern Regional. With a talented senior core and standout underclassmen 2013 was shaping up to be a big year for Southern Regional, and head coach John Pampalone made sure his team understood what it was capable of.

"The expectations are huge, and we're not shying away from them," Pampalone told All Shore Media early in the season.
As the season progressed and Southern's undefeated record grew, so did the pressure. The Rams rarely faltered, however, and finished the season 18-2 with a pair of championships to set program records and continue to raise the bar for Ocean County. For his efforts, Pampalone was recognized as Shore Conference Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year by the Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association.

"It's an honor to be named Coach of the Year," Pampalone said. "It was a great group of kids who lived up to expectations."
The Rams began the season 14-0 including an epic 9-8 triple-overtime victory over Jackson Memorial on April 13 that paved the way for their first Shore Conference Class A South championship. Southern advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament championship game for the first time in program history before falling to eventual champion Rumson-Fair Haven. The Rams bounced back with four straight victories to claim the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV title and reach the Group IV championship game for the first time. Southern was stopped by eventual Tournament of Champions winner Ridge in the Group IV final, but that couldn't put a damper on the greatest season in the history of Southern Lacrosse.
The Rams return goal-scoring machine Dylan Jinks, dynamic attackman Brendan Mullen, explosive midfielder Shawn McManus, elite face-off specialist Billy Dowd and standout goalie Brendan Lefanto next season and should once again be among the top teams in the Shore Conference.

ackson Memorial senior catcher Matt Thaiss and four former Shore Conference pitchers at the collegiate level were selected in this year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Thaiss was taken in the 32nd round with the 953rd overall pick, becoming the only current Shore Conference player to be selected. A pair of Toms River North graduates, NJIT pitcher Mark Leiter and Seton Hall pitcher Brian Gilbert, were also selected along with St. Joseph's University pitcher Jim Yacabonis, a former Christian Brothers Academy standout. Just like Toms River North, it was a banner day for Jackson Memorial, as former pitcher Pete Kelich, who starred at Bryant University, was taken in the 38th round by the San Diego Padres. Gilbert was taken in the seventh round by the Minnesota Twins, Yacabonis was selected in the 13th round by the Baltimore Orioles, and Leiter was drafted in the 22nd round by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Thaiss was happy to be selected but said that he intends on honoring his commitment to the University of Virginia. This spring he hit .351 with 26 hits, 20 runs scored, 19 RBI, 11 doubles, 4 homers and a .531 on-base percentage thanks to 29 walks.
"To take me away from Virginia, they knew it was going to take a lot (of money) because it's a great education and a great program,'' Thaiss said. "All along I really wanted to go to school. I am dead-set on going to Virginia, and it would've taken life-changing money not to go, but it's definitely nice to be drafted."
Thaiss said he spoke with members of the Red Sox organization the day before
he was selected and told them what he would sign for.
"I think they went a different way earlier in the draft after hearing that, but it's all good,'' he said. "I can come back in three years (when he will be drafteligible again) and hopefully go a lot higher."

anney's baseball team had just suffered a lopsided loss to St. Rose in mid-May when junior pitcher Steven Jacobson returned home to find a box waiting for him that made the defeat seem like a distant memory. Sitting inside the box was the culmination of four years of hard work. While there are plenty of Shore Conference baseball players who accomplished impressive feats this spring, only one can say he published his debut novel.
"I opened the box, and just to see that cover with my name on it, flip the book over, see my picture and words I've written, it was an incredible feeling,'' Jacobson said.
On May 21, Jacobson, 17, released his first book, titled "One Last Season." Available on Amazon, BarnesandNoble.com and Books-A-Million, the fictional story revolves around 43-year-old catcher Fred Duvall, a one-time-greatturned-backup who takes over the starting job due to an injury. The team's owner doesn't believe Duvall can last the full season despite his hot start, so he trades for a young catcher to compete for the job. The new catcher happens to be Duvall's estranged son, Cody, whom Fred abandoned 20 years earlier when he opted for the life of a professional baseball player. "It took a long time, but it was worth it,'' Jacobson said. "I've always had a very creative, imaginative mind and always like to lay my ideas down on paper.
"I was thinking, what if a comeback like that happened in baseball at catcher, the most grueling position on the field,'' Jacobson said. "Also, if the catcher is in his 40s, he might have a son who could play Major League Baseball, and that's what really sparked the idea."
A project Jacobson thought would take a few months in 2010 ended up nearly taking until the end of his junior year of high school to complete. In between editing and finalizing the book this spring, Jacobson was a pitcher/outfielder for Ranney in the Panthers' first year playing in the Class B Central division as a newlyminted member of the Shore Conference. He had largely kept the book project under wraps until his teammates discovered it on Amazon.
"I'd always heard he loved writing,'' Ranney baseball coach Brian Dolan said. "He's so humble, he never really came out and told anybody about it. I think that's amazing for an adult with a full-time job to do something like this, but for a kid to do that is even more impressive. We got a copy delivered to the school, and I was thumbing through it and said, 'This is amazing.''' "I wouldn't say my teammates were surprised, because they know how much I love writing, but they were impressed,'' Jacobson said.
He wrote his book in the midst of a host of other extracurricular activities, including playing baseball for Ranney and for his offseason travel team, the New Jersey Marlins. He spent his winter and spring breaks during this school year doing the final edits.
"It was definitely a really good learning process,'' he said. "I'm not terribly worried about how many copies I'm going to sell. It's just nice to have my name in print. It was a really detailed, really focused process."
Baseball fiction has long been a favorite of Jacobson, who lives in Colts Neck after growing up in Farmingdale. When his mother went to the gym at The Atlantic Club in Manasquan, Jacobson would go to the Wall Township Library and scan the shelves for baseball books. New Jersey author Dan Gutman was a particular favorite, along with books by New York Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica and a 1940s series about the Brooklyn Dodgers by former New Yorker writer John R. Tunis. "I read a lot of baseball fiction,'' he said. "I used to love to go to the library and peruse the sports fiction sections."
After becoming a published author, Jacobson plans on doing some writing in college. However, he sees it more as a side passion than his main focus.
"I don't want to grow up and be a writer,'' he said. "I like to have things to do, and if I was a writer and had writing block for a long time, I wouldn't have a lot to do."
While the book is mainly available online and via order through bookstores, Jacobson will also be having a reading and talking about the book at 11 a.m. on July 13 at the Monmouth County Library branch in Shrewsbury, where he is a volunteer. He has no immediate plans to write another book, but there could be one down the line. "There's a lot of stuff going on right now,'' he said. "It took me three years to write this one, so it would probably take a while to write another one. I've been writing short stories since I was eight years old, so for now I'll work on them because they're quick and easy. As for another book, I will probably write one at some point in the future."

The seeds of the novel were sewn when he was 13 years old in 2009, watching Redskins back-up quarterback Todd Collins enter the game against his favorite team, the New York Giants. The announcers detailed the latecareer comeback story of Collins, who came off the bench in 2007 to lead the Redskins to three straight wins and had remained as Jason Campbell's backup for the next two seasons. Jacobson's favorite sport was baseball, not football, but the story of Collins getting one last shot late in his career germinated the idea for Jacobson, who has loved creative writing from a young age.
Jacobson published the book through CreateSpace, a company under the Amazon umbrella that provides writers with the tools to self-publish and distribute their work. Jacobson worked with a team at CreateSpace that put the book through two rounds of professional editing, produced a bio and a press release, and designed the front and back covers. From beginning to end, the project took from January of 2010 to this past May, and he said it cost about $4,000 in using CreateSpace to produce.
