Welcome to the 34

annual WOBM Christmas Classic, hosted by Townsquare Media, the Shore Sports Network, WOBM FM/AM and the Toms River Regional School District. Once again 32 varsity basketball teams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 52 games over six days at the Toms River Athletic Arena (formally the Pine Belt Arena). The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eight boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. It has grown into one of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey and has featured 32 teams since moving to the campus of Toms River North in 2003. Special thanks to the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the event and providing such an outstanding facility for the participants. th

WOBM ChristMas ClassiC tip-Off BrunCh

s it’s been for the last 22 years, WOBM Christmas Classic week began on December 18th with a Tipoff Brunch hosted by the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Toms River. More than 260 players, coaches, officials and special guests Christams Classic founder/director gathered inside the main Kevin Williams & Dr. Andrew Nelson ballroom for what has from Seaview Orthopaedic & Medical Associates become one of the highlights of the tournament. Hungry student-athletes made return trips to the buffet line which featured a delicious breakfast cooked-up and served by the Clarion’s awardwinning staff. The Clarion has been a gracious supporter of the WOBM Christmas Classic by sponsoring and hosting the opening event which allows players to come together before they step on the court to battle for the prestigious title which concludes with the championship games on Wednesday, December 30th.

Among those to take the podium were Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent David Healey who proudly welcomed the teams to the tournament that is hosted by his school district and Dr. Andrew Nelson from Seaview Orthopaedic & Medical Associates wished everyone a healthy tournament. Seaview serves as the official team doctors for the WOBM Christmas Classic and will work with an outstanding group of athletic trainers.

The $10,000 half court shot returns thanks Ed Sarluca is presented with the to the generosity of the Pine Belt Family of Jim Ruhnke Award from King Rice Dealerships with locations in Toms for his many years of service to River, Lakewood and Keyport. the tournament. Always one of the most exciting parts of the tournament Williams is thrilled to have the Pine Belt group on board again and hopes they will get a chance to hand out a $10,000 check on December 30th.

Serving as guest speaker was Monmouth University basketball coach King Rice, who was earned the MAAC Coach of the Year award the last two seasons as the Hawks rose to prominence not just in New Jersey but across the country. Rice told the student-athletes that they are fortunate to have a chance to play in the WOBM CC and thanked the sponsors who have allowed the tournament to thrive while so many other holiday events have ceased to exist.

As he does annually founder/director Kevin Williams hosted the morning event which featured all 32 teams and talked about the growth of what’s become one of the premier holiday tournaments in all of New Jersey. As only he can the WOBM radio personality and Director of the Shore Sports Network expressed his appreciation for the 21 sponsors who contribute in some fashion especially the newly-opened See the Rim Basketball Academy in Toms River who is the presenting sponsor. Their lead trainer Zach Leach spoke briefly about their teaching philosophy and desire to improve the level of basketball in the shore area.

Two of those sponsors date back to the first WOBM Christmas Classic in 1984 as The Causeway Family of Dealerships returns as the sponsor of the more than 700 tee shirts that will be distributed to players, coaches, staff, etc. They will also continue to provide the Boys MVP award which the Wintrode Family has done for all 34 years.

Ocean Trophies also goes back to year one with Scott Ritchie donating some of the hardware and doing his usual great job with the large array of trophies and plaques awarded.

Two new girls’ teams have joined the field this year with Marlboro and Middletown South replacing Freehold Township and Monroe who have opted out and made other holiday plans.

Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent David Healey with Townsquare Media Market President Dennis Lamme

On the boys side Central Regional has returned to fill the spot left vacant by Wall. Also welcomed to the tournament were first-year head coaches Mike Pelkey (Brick Memorial), Sean McAndrew (Lacey), Matt Gathman (St. Rose), Steve Jannarone (Colts Neck) & Kim Peto (TR South).

Guest speaker Monmouth Basketball Head Coach King Rice

He also shared what it’s like to be the father of a 16-year old in today’s sometimes confusing world dominated by social media. Rice talked about how progress is not and should not always be measured by wins and losses because his teams lost at least 20 games each of his his first three seasons at Monmouth but yet he was praised by his athletic director, Dr. Marilyn McNeil for improving the academic standing of the program. Soon after that he was rewarded with a contract extension and then came seasons of 18, 28 and 27 wins. His message was that if not for McNeil’s confidence someone else might have reaped the benefits of the foundation that was laid.

Williams announced this year’s recipients of the academic scholarship awards made possible by RWJ Barnabas Health/Community Medical Center. The awards are based on the academic performance of boys and girls who played in the 2016 WOBM CC and are now college freshman. They will receive their awards at halftime of the championship games on December 30th.

north Boys, Manchester girls garner top seeds

T

he Toms River North boys and Manchester girls enter the WOBM Christmas Classic as the top seeds following voting by all of the tournament coaches during a dinner meeting at The Villa/Office Restaurant & Lounge in Toms River on December 10th.

The Mariners are seeking their fourth consecutive appearance in the championship game, having lost in the finals in both 2016 and 2015 (not 2015 and 2015). Coach Rory Caswell returns a pair of outstanding seniors in Travis Holland and Holden Petrick who will look to win it all on their home court. North’s biggest challenge is expected to come from Manasquan, Red Bank Catholic and defending champion Freehold Township.

Coming off a season in which they won a state sectional title for the first time in school history Manchester earns their first-ever top seed on the girl’s side. The Hawks return a trio of starters in Kamari Reynolds, Dakota Adams and Serenity Anderson but will have to get past a tremendous field that includes defending champion Toms River North along with Ewing, Donovan Catholic and Middletown South.

Once again through the support of RWJ Barnabas Health/Community Medical Center we are able to honor eight student-athletes who played in the 2016 tournament and are now college freshman. All of them will receive $500 to help with their second semester college costs and this brings the total to over $80,000 awarded through scholarships. 2017 Dejah Adams Di’Avian Foster Lindsay Hernandez Ryann Maier Darrion Carrington Mark Denis Caverly Joseph Manso Stephen Staklinski

PINE BELT HALF COURT SHOT RETURNS

O nce again one lucky person will get the chance to sink a half-court shot and win $10,000 during this year’s WOBM Christmas Classic.

By Kevin Williams

Presented by the Pine Belt Family of Dealerships, the shot attempt will come between the 3rd and 4th quarters of the Boys championship game on December 30.

Who takes the shot will be determined during a random drawing of those who registered on line prior to the tournament. Five people will be selected with four winning a $100 gift certificate from River Rock Restaurant and Marina Bar in Brick. However the fifth gets a guaranteed $500 and a chance to make a halfcourt shot for $10,000 courtesy of Pine Belt with locations in Toms River, Keyport and Lakewood. Julia Kilpatrick pictured right, was last year’s contestant and gave it a good try before settling for the $500 prize.
