Studio Brief Cities change constantly in the open-ended spectacle of daily life, with new buildings being constructed and the repair or demolition of old and redundant structures. However, within this urban flux, some elements endure; from the major urban spaces, the exemplary architectural works, the memorials to major historic events. Over centuries, these urban-artefacts become symbols of civic identity, embedded in the memory of citizens. Also, there are structures that endure through adaptation, embracing change by suitable new uses to old spaces. This studio explores the “creative” potential of building adaptation. It will focus on suitable “retired” buildings in a city, blurring conventional boundaries between architecture and interiors. We will research every aspect of the existing architectural space, including its history and setting, the essence of its emotional power, and its place in the collective urban memory. We will then design inspiring interior-architectural transformations that will generate new spatial purposes, experiences, expressions, meaning, emotions and memories.

It was an interesting approach to look at the site building in terms of relative attributes and metaphors. This helped in connecting with the building or rather parts of the entire building, emotionally and develop sensitivity towards certain aspects like the rawness and the timelessness, the way it is obscured and covered in the center of a lush green landscape. This helped in understanding the site in an unusual yet interesting way.

Selecting a few attributes from all, these (on the right) are their graphical representation. The decision of taking a framed square and Reflections modulating it according to the attributes came Subjective: Impressions through the building structure itself. It was taken as the base for all the graphical symbols Impression of the site with relating attributes depicting the building structure and andbody. representing them in a graphical manner.

Site Impressions: Montage

Following the earlier stage, this exercise talks about the first narrative that occurs in one’s mind after understanding the site building and articulating it in terms of attributes and metaphors. From those images itself, three attributes were chosen and were to depict them envisioning a basic narrative relating to the site building. Three montages were made with the same idea out of which any one had to be intuitive without considering the attributes relating to it. This one (on the right) is articulated by the words - Contrast - Play of light - Balance

The one on the top is articulated by the words - Glitch - Frame in a frame - Repetition The bottom one was an intuitive attempt visualizing the space taken over by the nature and the building getting obscured by it yet welcoming the wilderness in the same way a mother holds a child.

The site offered opportunities in many ways and it was a crucial factor to identify them for understanding the possibilities it has in terms of design, that can be later translated in the form of interventions and help in taking stand on the design decisions made. There were six aspects that were to be identified while studying the site. - Threshold - Connectors - Planes

- Apertures - Crown - Blocks

Fenestrations/ openings: Apertures

Connector

Planes The entrance cut outs acts as connectors from the outside to the inside

Planes are elements that divides a space and the exterior walls segregate the interior space from the outside The fenestrations on the internal wall, visually connects the two segregated spaces by the bays

Derivative rules of Art Tobias Putrih

Here, out of a list of 10 diverse artists, we had to select any two and study their artworks. This was to understand the artist’s style and principles for the stage coming further.

Alberto Oderiz

Extraction: - The artwork consists of two elements, Linear wooden member and a pin to connect.

- Members of different sizes with groves placed differently on them, when come together, creates interesting compositions and add structural quality to the sculpture along with a sense of balance.

- There are different sizes of wooden members with holes on different points on the linear member.

Members of different sizes when connected allows addition/ extension in any direction and any form

Pin

Tobias Putrih

Wooden member - When a single module is made after connecting the wooden members, the linear members come together and make a plane/ surface with different dimensions depending on the way the modules are fixed to each other. - After the modules are connected and made into a sculpture, empty spaces are created according to the arrangements of the planes created. - If the pin is inserted into the groves of the wooden members, it allows rotation of 360 degrees, and that point acts like a pivot.

Transforming the Transformers

The exercise unfolds in 3 stages of operative dialogue based on 3 different attitudes adopted with respective sites. 1. Weave 2. Box-in a-Box 3. Parasite Being mindful of these attitudes, each for each stage not repeating in the other, Interventions like thresholds, apertures, connectors, planes and blocks are to be created taking the principles of one of the artists from the previous exercise and one artist was alloted. Articulating and translating both of their styles and principles, the interventions created should narrate through the selected parts of the site.

Stage. 1 For the first stage, transition spaces were to be created connecting the thresholds to the apertures.

Stage. 2

Stage. 3

This stage was to deal with the crown and the elements connecting it with the other surfaces from inside the building, also creating thresholds.

For the last stage, all the interventions were to be thought of like thresholds connecting to the inside, dealing with the crown and the apertures and in all creating an experience out of it.

Experience

An Odyssey into the world of urban farming Programming the Program

Vision and philosophy One of the major reasons for encouraging such a practice is because urban population is increasing rapidly and on the contrary the agricultural land is decreasing. Having an increase in the population, the demand for food increases as well. As an addition to this, over the years, there has been a huge change in the food pattern in our day to day lifestyle as we have started adapting and accepting global food products and ingredients. It becomes a crucial factor to consider them growing in our environment and region. A practice like urban farming not only elevates the food and farming industry but also encourage innovative techniques and thoughts, and starting from revisiting the abandoned buildings and spaces , and inculcate a program of such sort is a step towards gifting the nature back what we got from it. A gift to the future. A sustainable future. Greendustrial is a gift to the nature and an attempt on how to make it into an experience for people of all ages.

Parasite Growth

Growth

The concept “Growth was derived considering the life cycle of any living thing (here plant). Growth is the process of any life cycle and the project is of such a kind. Weaving The image of the site in the current situation. This image in particular, conveyed something special of the building. The way how nature subtly has taken over the built by growing and rising inside and the building welcoming it as a child, plants an idea on developing the language of design and interventions to be of the same strategy. The image suggests an approach of weaving through spaces making its way upwards. The way how the termite tunnels rise and utilize the building, can be translated as an idea or a strategy to define the language of the interventions.

Referencing the relevant

These images or references become the inventory to kick start the design and a platform for constantly referring to this imagery showcasing all sort of interior atmospheres, functions or activities that somewhere connects and relates with the kind of an experience the program asks for. The kind of interventions and ideas generated through these references, gives a direction to work further on the design along with the concept word “Growth.

Sun- path Study

The site analysis helped in understanding the built and how to treat it during the design process. But when it comes to growing crops and greens, one major factor involved for the growth to happen is the amount of sunlight they get. The site had a slanted roof with openings towards the north from where the light could enter inside. The sun- path study helped in locating the area allocation for the crops and the greens to grow.

Material Palette

The materials are selected being mindful of what goes with the existing site as well as the program. The journey talks about an experience that people would take along with them. The soothing color scheme going with the idea of organic and natural. The rough surfaces and finishes makes one touch wherever they go. A sensory experience focusing on the visual and physical aspect through materials is highlighted.

2020: A Green Odyssey Abundance on the plate for the privileged few, us the city dwellers and an empty bowl for a large toiling population prompted a question about the prevalent disconnect and emotional indifference for the roots from where the food that we, the privileged, source. The project is building up on that narrative to bring value to the food that comes to our plates. The sensorial experiences attached with working, tending and toiling the land for the green produce, be it the delicate herbs, the colorful fruits and vegetables or the shady orchards, this project offers a chance to reconnect with the soil, learn basics of farming and turn our cities to be having farming backyards and balconies. It approaches the present abandoned site with a playful language of bends and curves of discoveries in contrast to its stoic and hard shell like container. The project offers forking choices of activities related to farming and farm produce, all orchestrated within the regimental layout of the given structure. However, the generosity of the scale of the given structure is articulated by taking advantage of creating an elevated entry to achieve a hovering experience as being amongst the branches of the trees and its foliage to be looking down at the spread on the ground, here, the platter of green produce growing on the floor of the abandoned factory building. The project Imagines to be a lively place to go to for people of all age groups and everyone wishing to connect with the greens which is not as leisure as in parks but as an active gardener of the greens. In its landscape, it offers greens as experiential space making elements with its colors, textures and fragrances.
