Chemistry education at Shiv Nadar University provides a link between the fundamental principles governing the nature of the universe and the science of life and spans traditional as well as a variety of interdisciplinary areas. Chemistry is often called the central science, as it plays a vital role in nearly every other scientific field. At the undergraduate level, we offer B.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry. One can also combine a Minor in Chemistry with a Major in any other discipline at Shiv Nadar University and vice versa. University-wide elective courses in the curriculum allow students unprecedented freedom to explore subjects outside their chosen major; in some depth. This flexible and broad curriculum prepares students not just for a career in chemistry upon graduation but for a leadership role in the world as well.
At the undergraduate level, we offer a 4-year B.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry and also options to pursue specialisations in (A) Chemical Biology or (B) Computational Chemistry or (C) Materials Chemistry. These specialisations will allow the students to build their deserving careers in the specialised research areas. Several B.Sc. (Research) Chemistry students have been selected for M.Sc or Ph.D. studies (with full scholarships) at top universities worldwide such as Penn State University, University of Michigan, University of Utah, EPFL Switzerland to name a few.
The chemistry curriculum at Shiv Nadar IoE provides both a broad background in chemical principles as well as an in-depth study of chemistry or chemistry-related areas that build on this background. The chemistry curriculum is divided into three categories: introductory general chemistry, foundation courses providing breadth across sub-disciplines, and rigorous in-depth courses that build upon these foundations and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Since chemistry is an experimental science, substantial laboratory work is an integral part of almost all our courses. The introductory general chemistry course provides a common grounding in basic chemical concepts for students with diverse backgrounds, develops basic mathematical and laboratory skills, and prepares students for the foundation courses. Foundation courses in general chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry provide breadth and lay the groundwork for more in-depth coursework.
Admission:
We admit students from both the streams PCM (Physics - Chemistry - Mathematics) and PCB (Physics- ChemistryBiology). Annual intake based on SNUSAT, JEE-mains, College board SAT, ACT, or CUET score.
Major degree:
The four-year research program provides options to students in higher education (abroad) and career opportunities in Industries.
The basic undergraduate degree program offered by the Department of Chemistry is the Bachelor of Science: B.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry. In addition, the Department of Chemistry also offers specialisation in Material Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Chemical Biology in B.Sc. (Research) program (with Specialization).
(a) Course Design: All semester courses are structured to enhance students' core competencies in different branches of Chemistry.
(b) Electives: The Department offers a variety of elective courses covering a wide range of domains, such as analytical chemistry, biochemistry, material chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, polymer chemistry, among others.
The credit requirements for B.Sc. (Research) Chemistry are 152 [73 credits in Core Chemistry Courses (Introductory + Foundation + In-Depth) + 13 PCM (B) / 10 PCB credits (Physics/Life Sciences) + 12 PCM (B) / 15 PCB credits (Chemistry electives) + 12 credits (Senior project) + 42: (18 credits CCC courses + 18 credits UWE courses + 6 credits from either CCC and/or UWE/DSE (Department Selective Elective) category)]

In a normal scenario, one can obtain an Integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc. (Research) degree for 5 years, M.Sc.-Ph.D. for 6 years, M.Sc. (Research) for 2 years and Ph.D. for 5 years.
a. Course Design:
to enhance a student’s core competencies in different branches of Chemistry.
b. Electives: courses covering a wide range of domains such as analytical chemistry, biochemistry, material chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, polymer chemistry, among others.
The credit requirements for Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. and M.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry are 83 credits.
• 83 credits = 33 credits (Chemistry Core Courses) + 25 credits (Chemistry elective courses) + 24 credits (Master project) + 1 credits Seminar (CHY615).
The credit requirements for Integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc. (Research) and Integrated B.Sc.-M.Sc.-Ph.D. in Chemistry in Chemistry are 211:
• 211 credits = 128 credits from 3 years B.Sc. (as suggested in UG prospectus) + 83 credits from 2 years M.Sc. (Research) for both the mentioned degrees.
The credit requirements for Ph.D. in Chemistry are 12 credits.
• 12 Credits = 6 credits (Chemistry Major Courses) + 6 credits Electives
Research activities are not only confined to the postgraduate level but are integrated into the undergraduate programs through our Research Experiential & Applied Learning courses (REAL). Undergraduate research allows students to integrate and reinforce chemistry knowledge from their formal coursework, develop scientific and professional skills and create new scientific knowledge.
Original research culminating in a comprehensive written report provides an effective means for integrating undergraduate learning experiences and allows students to participate directly in the process of science.

Shiv Nadar University has several active collaborations with research and academic institutions in India and abroad with an aim to facilitate the exchange of ideas and resources in scientific research and development, and the exchange of students and faculty members. At the Chemistry department, presently, we have two MoUs, with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune and Tamkang University (TKU), Taiwan.
The agreement with the Chemistry department at IISER Pune enables us to pursue collaborative research in Natural Sciences. The scope of the agreement includes sharing relevant information and laboratory resources between the two institutions as well as the exchange of students, scholars, and postdoctoral fellows for projects.
The Shiv Nadar University-TKU MoU allows the exchange of undergraduate students from the Chemistry department and the possibility of research collaborations with the faculty members of the chemistry department at Tamkang University.
