Ice Road Truckers canceled: What happened?
‘Ice Road Truckers’ premiere was released on June, 17, 2007 and was viewed by 3.4+ million people. Thus, it became History Channel’s most-watched original series since the network’s launch way back in 1995. It featured people who drove in remote regions of Canada and Alaska on deep lakes over thin ice. Their objective was to supply critical deliverable to remote communities, diamond mines and industrial sites. But the show got canceled after 11 successful seasons which obviously intrigued the channel’s loyal viewers. Many wondered the reason for its cancellation since it was running successfully. It was also nominated for the Emmy Award in 2008 for Nonfiction Programming for Outstanding Cinematography.
Its origin
History Channel in 2000 had aired ‘Suicide Missions’, a documentary series. It featured hazardous job involving transversing on man-made structure or on ice road, driving heavy vehicles on Northwest Canada’s frozen territories. One episode ran by the title ‘Ice Road Truckers’. The series is based on Edith Iglauer’s 1974 published non-fiction novel named ‘Denison’s Ice Road’. Original Productions’ Thom Beers was tapped for the series. He was ‘Deadliest Catch’ hit series’ executive producer, shown on Discovery Channel.
Ice Road Truckers canceled
Season 11’s episode ‘One Last Lick’ was aired on November, 09, 2017. Following it, fans waited anxiously for Season 12’s release. But none came! The show’s mainstay, Alex did not get any information about the network’s plan. He did ice road trucking whether or not the camera was present. This disappointed his fans as they felt it was a courtesy to inform at least him about the show’s continuation or cancellation. Entertainment insiders claimed show cancellation. VP - Public Relations of History Channel stated through an email that no decision is yet made on the future of the series.
‘Ice Road Truckers’ official page on Facebook is still up, giving hope to its fans. Although there are some postings noticed on the official page, it is mainly ads promoting other shows shows on History Channel. Fans, in huge numbers, have commented on this page asking the series’ creators to restart their favorite show. But the network has not given any positive response till date. No reason is also cited from the producers as to why the show got canceled and Season 12 has not started.
Some fans are of the belief that the probable reason for the show to discontinue was that it might not have dominated TV ratings like it did before. ‘Truck Night America’ got premiered in 2018, thereby raising speculation that this new series might have have taken its place.
