On this day she asked her friends to abduct her. She went to the forest and sat in penance and this mesmerized Lord Shiva and got married to Maa Parvati on this day. Therefore on this day married women pray and fast for the good health and longevity of their husband and their family. Unmarried women fast so that they get a husband like Lord Shiva. It is made from 2 words Harat which means abduction in Hindi and Aalika which means friend. So girls and women celebrate with friends and companions. Rituals to be performed while performing Hartalika Teej Puja Like Karwa Chauth, Hartalika Teej's fast has to be observed by fasting without grains and water.
