Features of the Naval Campaign in the Far East

The area over which the Japanese campaign, begun on December 7th, has extended forms a triangle which is over two thousand miles on the side and the distances involved are very great. There are many islands within the area, some of them very large, some mere dots. The Japanese were very well acquainted with this area due to the aaivities of their fisheries and their other commercial interests over many years.

The campaign was one of Amphibious War, this most difficult and least known variety of warfare. In this instance, aircraft took a very forward part.

The enemy has been able to employ landbased planes throughout all his advances.

In most instances, the planes which have played so vital a part in the enemy's success were of the Japanese Naval Air Service—mostly land planes. The enemy was adept in their use—as we found them to be with other weapons as well. Japan's long war with China had provided much experience in Amphibious Warfare. She prepared her blows long in advance, evidently with thoroughness AND the surprise element gave her forces a tremendous advantage.

The AUied naval forces in Asiatic waters were not large. A full half of them were American, after the early loss of the

British REPULSE and PRINCE OF WALES, Those were the only two capital ships on our side and their loss was a severe one. It occurred ar the very beginning and included the loss of Admiral Phillips, R.N., well-known to be one of the best of the British Navy. His venture was unlucky and there has been criticism of his taking to the sea with those rwo ships under the conditions which obtained. It is now apparent, in the light of the final outcome of the land campaign in Malaya, that Admiral Phillips took the only course which could have saved Singapore.

One salient feature of this campaign is that the Allied naval force generally followed the plans which the three nations had separately developed prior to the outbreak of the war. All three based their plans on the thesis that any opening of the war would be made by the enemy and that it would be a surprise attack made by superior naval forces.

Estimates of results from air bombing are much more difficult;—it usually is not possible for planes to hold their position long enough for good observation; furthermore the observations are made from high in the air, frequently in poor visibility, and the personnel is usually not proficient in the highly specialized observations with which such estimates are concerned. Naval Officer Procurement The rapid expansion of the Navy has made necessary large increases in officer persoimel in quanities that have varied as conditions changed. The principal source for obtaining required officer persoimel is through induction of officers into the Naval Reserve.

To meet these conditions, there have been established Offices of Naval Officer Procurement, to meet the following requirements and principles.

1. Through the operation of a simplified and efficiently operated organization directly under a Director of Naval Officer Procurement responsible only to the Chief of the Bureau of Navigation, to respond quickly to procurement demands for officers with a minimum loss of time in prospeaing, selecting, and processing applications, consistent with maintaining the high quality of personnel recommended for appointment.

2. To be thoroughly familiar with the procurement possibilities throughout the district under the cognizance of the individual Directors, i. e., to know density and quality of material suitable for the various classifications as outlined by the existing requirements and qualifications for Naval Reserve Officers, as laid down in the Bureau of Navigation Manual and such special class qualifications as are promulgated for special billets required.

The Chief of the Bureau of Navigation particularly desires that the following features of administration in the various Offices of Naval Officer Procurement be effected: A. Close liaison between the Office of Naval Officer Procurement and the Navy Recruiting Service.

The Naval Academy Band

On the midshipmen practice cruise the summer of 1933, mid-ocean between the Madeira Islands and Halifax, Lieutenant William Richard Sima, leader of the Naval Academy Band, and Midshipmen Collins and Martin jotted down the above fighting words in the space of about 15 minutes. A day or so later the words were placed on a slide, along with the musical arrangement by the leader, and for the first time, the now familiar song that fits any Navy sporting event was introduced to midshipmen of the Naval Academy. Twenty members of the band made the cruise.

On Monday, April 13, the Naval Academy Band will broadcast the "Lieutenant Sima March" at 2:30 o'clock over the Mumal Network system, to 187 stations.

The march was written by George J. Demchak in Lieutenant Sima's honor— in recognition of his 32 years' service with the band; of his ability as a composer, arranger and performer. Up until last October, the band played only on local stations. It now ranks as one of the five best service bands in the Nation, including the Washington Navy Band, the Washington Army Band, the Marine Band and the Military Academy Band at West Point.

Back in the days when midshipmen were called naval cadets the regiment marched to the tune of a fife and drum, with two Annapolis men, William Bealer, fifer, and John Jarvis, drummer, making up the band's membership.

Today, the band totals 78 musicians.

Of this number bandmaster H. O. Sattmary and bandmaster Michael Mrlik— who wrote a brief history of the band in 1935—have over 30 years' service at the Academy. Fifteen others have 20 years or more experience with the group. Several members have had wide notices be-

fore joining the band: Freddie Magliano was with Jan Savitt, Charlie French played the trumpet with Isham Jones, Sigis Monde blew for Tommy Dorsey, while G. M. Carle was formerly with Enoch Light. F. W. Akers, French horn artist played with John Scott Trotter, Bing Crosby's stand-by. John Kleis formerly played under John Philip Sousa.

The first official band at the Academy was formed the spring of 1853 under orders of Secretary of War Bancroft, then acting Secretary of the Navy. The year before, an order had been issued by the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography for a Band of Music to be established at the Academy. In the spring of 1853, John Philip Pfeiffer, formerly with the Charleston Navy Yard Band, scraped together thirteen men of necessary instrumentation and sailed in May on the receiving ship "Ohio" for Maryland's capital city. Among the first duties was the participation in June Week festivities.

Upon arrival of the musicians, the fife and drum "band" disbanded upon orders, and varied occupations were assumed by the pair. Mr. Bealer became a painter while Mr. Jarvis undertook the duties of a local mail carrier. The former's fife is now on display in the new band quarters in the wing of Bancroft Hall, which was loaned by his son, William W. Bealer of Annapolis.

In those early years, printed music was unknown; the leader arranged and copied by hand everything used. In order to pay for instruments and the meager fare of the musicians, a fund was established when each officer and smdent contributed 25 cents a month, but the drawback was the extremely low enrollment of both. The Navy Academy Register of 1858 lists the number of officers as six and cadets l 6 l . In 1855, a staff of 40 officers paid %\ a month while the 239 smdents paid 50 cents for a period of nine months, kx. that time the band totalled 29 members, including the leader.

On May 9, 1861, the Academy personnel, including the band, was removed to Newport, R. I., due to the Civil War. Midshipmen of the three upper classes were detached and given sea duty. Five new members were added to the band, making a total of 18, but at the close of

the war several were discharged. In order to obtain qualified musicians in the sadly depleted band, the stams was changed from enlisted men to civilian employees, and their pay was also raised.

When the midshipmen departed on sunamer cruises, the Academy was closed until October. Bandsmen mrned in their uniforms, free to accept any work they could get until school re-opened. Small bands and orchestras were formed, which played in summer resorts and hotels.

When the Academy was placed on a twelve-month basis, laws were passed prohibiting musicians connected with the Academy to enter outside engagements.

Mr. Pfeiffer was succeeded by leaders Hammer, Myers, Marshall and Schoff.

In 1866, Charles A. Zimmerman, son of a former member of the band, became leader. His immortal "Anchors Aweigh" will live in the hearts of Navy personnel as long as there is an ocean for Navy ships to ride upon.

In 1903 a second band with 17 members was brought to the Academy, by orders of the Navy Department, under the leadership of bandmaster P. Desantis of the Norfolk Navy Band. In 1910 the two bands merged, bringing the membership to 48. It was that year when 18-year-old William Richard Sima joined the band, when Captain John M. Bowyer was superintendent of the Academy.

Improvement of the band was credited to a great extent to representatives from the Fifth Congressional District and members of the Continental Congress in Washington. On the approval of Naval Academy authorities and the Navy Department, considerable legislation was passed in order to improve material conditions. The late Hon. Sydney P. Mudd, Congressman from the Fifth District for several terms, did much to help the band.

His work was carried on by his son and successor, the Hon. Sydney P. Mudd, Jr. now deceased.

In 1919 the Hon. Fiorillo "Little Flower" La Guardia, former Congressman from New York, later mayor, carried the issue of band conditions, it is reported, on the floor before Congress assembled.

His father was an army bandmaster who lost his life in the Spanish-American War. The Hon. Stephen W. Gambrill, Rep-

resentative from the Fifth Maryland Distria, was successful in the introduction and passage of a law which placed the band on an equal basis of the Navy Band in Washington. Naval authorities collaborated with him in the work.

Upon the death of Mr. Zimmerman, Adolph Torovsky, who had been second leader for many years, became head. In 1918, Mr. Sima was made second leader; the following year the band was enlarged to 75. Upon "Torovsky's retirement, J. J. Petermaim, bandmaster, took over. And upon his retirement in 1933, Mr. Sima became leader of the band numbering 77 men. Rear Admiral Thomas C. Hart was superintendent.

Lieutenant Sima was born in Baltimore in 1892. His mother Mrs. Mary Sima, who was an opera singer in her native Bohemia, now lives at 3405 Cliftmount Avenue, Baltimore. He attended City College, and at the age of 15 became musical director at the old Wilson Theatre, now the Rivoli, in Baltimore. "I always wanted to be a director," he said.

"When I was a small boy I'd forget to watch the show but would watch the orchestra director instead."

He not only got his wish but has added a creditable number of musical compositions to his credit, including innumerable scores for academy shows such as "Gangway" and "Cease Firing." In the summer of 1918 he played with Victor Herbert in the "Red Mill" and "Naughty Marietta," at the premiere performance at Ford's Theatre. He was violinist at the old Caswell Hotel, and at the age of 18 played for Lillian Russell in musical com-

edy, and for Margaret Anglin in "Lady Windermere's Fan." For 19 years after coming to Annapolis he played in various theatres and picmre show houses—up until movietones replaced the silent films. He recalled two occasions when the old Colonial Theatre burned, once during a packed house, when the stage went up in flames just as the last person got out of the building, and also the time the old Republic suffered a fire. As many as ten men played for silent picmres, he said, and it was a most important part to accent tension or excitement on the screen by the various musical arrangements.

During June Week —and there were four last year, the band appears at all functions; when the Regiment marches in dress parade upon Worden Field, the band precedes the battalions of future naval officers, step by step. At football games, both home and away, in all types of weather, the band is ready to play marches and patriotic songs that have become such a necessary part of entertaining the public.

Other duties include furnishing music for midshipmen hops, with sweet swing music—and the very latest hot numbers demanded—playing for officer's hops, at musicals, daily drills, intermissions of shows, concerts, guest speakers, formal and informal occasions at the Superintendent's House and other places of high rank—as many as four bands are playing at the same hour. Lieutenant Sima said.

The band is divided into A, B and C groups, so when the occasion demands one group may appear at some formal event while another is carrying on with an informal occasion. There are three bands for drills, a midshipman dance orchestra of 15 pieces which plays for the number one performances, while a number two band called the Star Dusters plays for less formal affairs such as hops, USO events, with the large band performing for formal occasions.

The bands play for the regular midshipmen, reserve midshipmen, enlisted men for infantry drill, while the latest is for the physical fitness program now in progress at the Academy. Every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a band is on hand for captain's inspection on the Reina Mercedes. A new wrinkle soon to be established that will help bandsmen quite a little is the recording of ten march numbers that will be amplified for midshipmen marching to classes, rather than have the bandsmen personally appear. For the first time in a number of years the drum and bugle corps was disbanded, a group that relieved the large band upon several occasions, particularly football games.

The band leader's wife is also a talented musician and has given valuable assistance as accompanist to her husband. They have appeared at dozens of recitals and personal appearances in Annapolis and nearby communities, at the Goverment House, at various Navy functions of social interest. She is from Portsmouth, N. H., and is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. They have one son, William R. Even Annapolis has a thriving war industry these days. Last Samrday, we decided to visit the Annapolis Yacht Yard, where we had noticed several new buildings being constructed recently. W e had to show our identification passes before we were admitted to the plant, and then, an officer on duty there showed us the new subchasers and torpedo boats that they are building. The yard, humming busily, was quite a contrast to the yard that it was a year ago. Last year we went there without being stopped, and saw only a few men building small yachts.

We also inspeaed the old yacht "America," which was taken to the shipyard from the Academy last year. The workmen have constmcted a covering over it to protect the hull while they are working on it. The hull is falling to pieces, and the wood is so rotten that it can be easily crumbled in one's hand.

There is some talk about rebuilding the entire ship, because none of the original wood can be used again. Seventy-five thousand dollars has already been appropriated for its reconstruction.

Recently, the Executive Department noticed that the midshipmen were not keeping in step while marching to class.

In an effort to remedy this, they installed two large loudspeakers on Bancroft Hall.

They tried them out by playing martial music while the sections formed on the terraces and marched to class. The music could be heard much farther than the rhythm of the drummers who ordinarily beat out the cadence. The loudspeakers also had the advantage in that they could be used on rainy days when the drummers could not stand on the grass near Stribling Walk. One afternoon, a confusion arose in the sections remrning from class when some tricky person played a swing record over the speakers.

The midshipmen practically danced back to Bancroft HaU to the mne of "Smile, Darn You, Smile." We don't • know whether this little incident was the cause of their disappearance or not, but nevertheless, the speakers were taken down and have not been used since.

A couple of weeks ago, the Naval

Academy was visited by the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway. They were seen with the Superintendent at the Masquerader's performance, at the Sunday morning chapel services, and when the Prince inspected the four battalions of the regiment. While they were at the chapel, the organist honored them by playing the Norwegian National Anthem before the Star Spangled Banner at the close of the service.

The new regimental commander for the second set of stripers is R. J. Zoeller, a midshioman whom you probablv remember from the football team and the basketball squad. Another member of the football team who has done well for himself is Howie Clark, who is the First Battalion Commander. The commanders of the Second, Third, and Fourth Battalions respectivelv, are J. J. Devlin, A. M. Carter, and G. F. CoUeran. These men will hold their stripes for two months, and from the first and second sets, the final stripers will be chosen. The regimental commander of the third set will be the man who will have his name put on the bronze plaque in the first deck corridor near the rotunda.

As if the Youngsters are not having enough trouble getting their radios, the Midshipmen's store is complicating matters for them. After many trials and tribulations, the Executive Department has finally given the third classmen permission to order their radios. However, the store can only obtain forty more radios, and after that, the purchaser must have a priority slip. As the radios come in, the Youngsters have to stow them in the Express Office until they are authorized to keep them in their rooms. It seems that every time that the Executive Department is almost ready to allow them to have radios, the Youngsters get into some mischief. For example, one week-end last month, the third class was in charge of the regiment while the first classmen were on leave. The sophomores, believing themselves heirs to first-class rates during the absence of the senior class, walked out of the mess hall when they had finished eating, instead of wait-

ing for two bells, the signal which usually grants them permission to leave. The Officer-of-the-Watch, noticing that a large number of third classmen were strolling out of the mess hall, had the doors locked, and proceeded to have a muster taken of every company in the mess hall. The guilty men, about one hundred in number, were placed on the conduct report, and as a result, the Youngster class will not get radios for another month.

Once again the Fourth Battalion must move around to make room for incoming reserves. Two hundred and fifty athletic instructors are coming to the Naval Academy for a period of training, and the eighteenth company will move to the first wing to make room for them. We understand that the Navy is going to take in a thousand athletic instructors to train the men in the fleet. In order that their physical exercises will be standardized, these men will be taught the system used by the instruaors here at the Naval Academy. Their daily schedule will be composed entirely of physical education, and they will spend eight hours a day in the gymnasium for a period of thirty days. The second group of two hundred and fifty men will come here after the first group leaves.

Beginning this June, the midshipmen in the company which wins the regimental competition will be given the Navy "E." Each man will wear it on the right sleeve of his full dress jacket as long as he is in the color company.

A new addition to the organ in the Naval Academy chapel is being installed by the Moller Pipe Organ Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, in the side wall of the rear balcony in the chapel. It is to be an "echo" organ and will be wired so that it can be played from the regular console. Professor Crosley says that the new addition will enable him to introduce many different effects into his music, and will help the choir to keep in step as the men march up the center aisle.

W e have just received some last minute information concerning khaki uniforms for midshipmen. It has been rumored that each midshipman will receive two khaki suits before the beginning of the Summer term. Since we will have to be in uniform at all times while on leave this summer, those khaki uniforms will be just the thing.

Was commissioned an Assistant Naval Constructor and served at the New York Navy Yard from 1900 to 1902 and then was ordered to duty at William Cramp & Sons Ship and Engine Building Company, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he supervised the construction of three cmisers and three battleships there building for the Navy.

Resigned from the Navy August 1st, 1906 and became Assistant to the President of William Cramp & Sons Ship and Engine Building Company, in which position he continued until May, 1914.

On this date he was elected President of Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation at Quincy, Mass. (a Bethlehem Steel Corporation wholly owned subsidiary).

Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War this company undertook the construction of twenty (20) 350 ton submarines for the British Navy, ten (10) of ^vhich were built at Vickers in Montreal. These ten were begun after Christmas of 1914 and the tenth submarine was delivered on the 20th of June 1915. In August, 1917, at the request of the then Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Josephus Daniels, he undertook the smdy of the possibility of constructing one hundred and fifty (150) 1100 ton Destroyers for the United States Navy in record time. In September contract for these vessels was placed and Mr. Powell undertook to build any part of the one hundred and fifty vessels that the other shipbuilders,

From 1938 to 1940 Mr. Powell was engaged in general business and in work incident to the dissolution of United Shipyards, Inc. Mr. Powell is an Honorary Vice-President of the American Bureau of Shipping and an active member of its Standing and Finance Committee, which is the managing organization.

He has been a member of the Corporation of Massachusetts Instimte of Technology since 1924; is Chairman of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and takes an active part in the educational problems of that Department of the Instimte.

He is President of Webb Institute of Naval Architecmre, New York City.

This Institute educates Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and, in addition, cares for indigent shipbuilders.

He is a Director of the National Sailors Home, an endowed Home for men who have served in the Naval armed forces of the United States.

Mr. Powell was President of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in 1937 and 1938, and headed the delegation of more than seventy American shipbuilders and Naval Architects who attended the International Conference in London in June, 1938, and is now a Past President of that Society.

He has been President of the Class of 1897 of the United States Naval Academy for the last twenty-five years.

In 1921 and 1922 Mr. Powell assisted Mr. Powell was appointed a Special Albert J. who had been constructing this type of vessel for the Navy, could not handle, and was eventually assigned eighty-five (85) of these vessels. He built for the Navy the Victory Plant at Squantum, Mass. for the construction of part of this order for Destroyers. The order to constmct the Squanmm Plant was given on August 5th, 1917. On April 21st, 1918 the first Destroyer was launched at this plant and it was completed and delivered to the Navy in October, 1918.

Later a Destroyer was assembled at this plant from keel laying to delivery in forty-six and one-half (46-1/2) working days, a world record for this type of shipbuilding. He contracted for and built for the Emergency Fleet Corporation the largest order of vessels, except the Hog Island contract, that was carried out for them under the war program. To carry out the war time contracts for the United States Navy and for the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation decided to consolidate its shipyard facilities. This was done under Mr. Powell's direction and he operated the combined companies known as the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation with plants at Quincy, Mass.; Elizabethport, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; Sparrows Point, Maryland; San Francisco, California, and Oakland, California, from the date of organization until he severed his connection with Bethlehem on January 1st, 1921.

From 1922 to 1927 he engaged in general business in Boston and New York, reorganized a number of companies connected with maritime affairs and in 1928 consolidated seven shipbuilding and ship repair plants with plants located on New York Harbor, to form United Dry Docks, Incorporated (afterwards United Shipyards, Inc.).

This Company he operated as President until he sold all of its physical assets to Bethlehem Steel Company in June of 1938. This was one of the two largest repair companies in the United States and, in addition, did a considerable shipbuilding business constructing, among other craft, four (4) 1500 ton Destroyers for the United States Navy and was the builder of the first all welded tanker of sea-going size that was constructed in this Country.

He is Congressman Edouard Victor Michel Izac, from San Diego, California, the only member of Congress to have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the only member of Congress who is a graduate of Annapolis.

(The Honorable Samuel W. King, delegate from Hawaii, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1910; but as a Delegate he is not permitted to vote in Committee or on the floor of the House, and, technically, is not a member.)

Congressman Izac was born in Cresco, Iowa, in 1891; graduated from the Naval Academy with the class of 1915; served on various men-of-war; reached the grade of senior lieutenant; and was forced to retire in 1921 because of wounds received while a prisoner of war in Germany.

When the U. S. S. PRESIDENT L I N COLN was attacked and sunk by the German submarine U-90 on May 21, 1918, Lieutenant Izac was captured and held as a prisoner on board, and later he was coiffined to a German prison camp.

February 21, 1942 COMMUNIQUE NO. 42

The Navy Department issued the following communique, outlining the Naval situation as of noon (EWT) February 21, 1942: Far East Six U. S. destroyers in company with Dutch warships attacked the Japanese landing force on the Island of Bali and sank two enemy destroyers. Our destroyers suffered only slight damage and minor loss of personnel.

In addition to the naval battahon composed of bluejackets and marines fighting with General MacArthur's command considerable equipment salvaged from Cavite and other sources of naval supply has been used to good advantage in the defense of the Bataan Peninsula.

Rear Admiral Francis W. Rockwell, U. S. Navy, Commandant of the 16th Naval District, the Senior Naval Officer fighting with General MacArthur, reports that this equipment consists of three-inch and four-inch artillery as well as boat guns and machine guns of several types, with ammunition. A large number of hand grenades, aircraft bombs and depth charges have been available.

Stores of gasoline, diesel oil and lubricating oil were saved and are being used in field operations. Motor launches, tugs and facilities for repair of artillery, tanks and trucks have been provided in addition to electrical and ordnance supplies.

The Navy Department issued the following communique, outlining the Naval situation based on reports received up to 8 A.M. (EWT) February 23, 1942.

Atlantic Area The Coast Guard Cutter ALEXANDER HAMILTON was torpedoed by an enemy submarine off Iceland. While being towed into port the ship capsized and had to be sunk by gunfire.

Loss of personnel which occurred when the ship was torpedoed was moderate. Next of kin of those lost have been notified.

There is nothing to report from other areas.

February 24, 1942 COMMUNIQUE NO. 44

The Navy Department issued the following communique, outlining the Naval situation based on reports received up to 9:30 A.M. (EWT) February 24, 1942: Atlantic Area The USS TRUXTUN, a World War destroyer, and the USS POLLUX, a cargo ship, ran aground in foul weather off the coast of Newfoundland and were lost.

Due to the extremely difficult surf caused by the gale raging in the Atlantic and the bitterness of the winter weather loss of life was heavy on both vessels. Heroic efforts to swim lines ashore failed due to the inability

to handle them when they became oil soaked.

A breeches buoy was finally rigged to a ledge at sea level, but some of the survivors were washed away before they could be gotten to the top of the cliff that lined the rocky shore.

The TRUXTUN broke up almost immediately after grounding and soon thereafter the POLLUX did likewise.

The survivors owe their rescue in large measure to the tireless, efficient and in many cases heroic action of the people of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland.

The next of kin of those lost in this tragic drama of the sea have been notified.

February 25, 1942 COMMUNIQUE NO. 45

Far East The Secretary of the Navy issued the following communique, summarizing previously published losses inflicted by U. S. Naval Forces upon the Japanese Navy and Merchant Marine in the period from December 10, 1941 until February 24, 1942, inclusive. The following information is compiled from Navy Department Communiques beginning with No. 1 and ending with No. 44, and complements similar information summarizing enemy losses and damage published in recent Communiques of the United States Army.

In accordance with its previously announced policy, the Navy does not indulge in the practice of overstating the losses that we inflict upon the enemy, or of understating the losses inflicted on us. The Navy will report only such facts as can be substantiated. Thus the tabulation of vessels damaged does not include many enemy ships thought to have been damaged, lack of conclusive evidence precluding speciflc announcements in these Instances.

elude only those sunk during the heroic defense of Wake Island and during the recent raid on the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. In accordance with the established Navy Department policy submarine sinkings are never announced until it is reasonably certain that the enemy has become cognizant of their loss. This explains the time lag in connection with various reports. There is evidence, however, of further sinkings of enemy submarines in Pacific waters, but their announcement will not be made public until full reports have been made to the Navy Department and absolute surety is determined.

Prior to the vicious attack made on the United Nations by the Japanese Empire on December 7,1941, the pride of the Japanese Merchant Marine consisted of three 17,000 ton luxury ships of the Yawata class. One of these ships is known to have been converted to serve as an Aircraft Carrier. The United States Naval forces have simk one Merchantman of the Yawata class, and one Aircraft Carrier of the same class, leaving only one such vessel known to be in service with the enemy.

Atlantic Area The USS JACOB JONES, a World War destroyer, was sunk by an enemy submarine off Cape May, New Jersey, just before dawn on February 28, 1942.

There were only eleven survivors consisting of nine engine room ratings and two apprentice seamen. Factual information in regard to the circumstances that led to the sinking is sparse because of the lack of deck ratings among the survivors. It has been established, however, that prior to receiving the first torpedo hit, the enemy submarine was not sighted nor was tiie torpedo.

The first torpedo blew up the bow and apparently killed all the personnel on the bridge as well as the men sleeping in the forward living compartments. The second torpedo, which was fired after the submarine circled ahead of the JACOB JONES, blew up the stern and all the depth charges.

The only survivors, except one man from the after engine room, were in the amidship section when the stern was blown up.

March 3, 1942 COMMUNIQUE NO. 51

The Navy Department issued the following communique, based on reports received up to 6:30 PJVE. (EWT) March 3, 1942.

Central Pacific In the course of recent Naval operations west of the Gilbert Islands a task force of the Pacific Fleet consisting of an aircraft carrier, cruisers and destroyers, was attacked by 18 heavy bombers of the enemy operating in two groups of nine each.

These attacks occurred in the late afternoon and were timed about onehalf hotir apart.

The Japanese formations were closely and vigorously engaged by our carrier fighter planes and by antiaircraft fire from the ships of our task force.

Only three enemy planes of the first formation reached their bomb release point over the aircraft carrier which avoided aU bomb hits by split second maneuvering.

The leading bomber of this group attempted a crash landing on the carrier and was shot down by heavy close range anti-aircraft fire when barely 100 yards from its objective.

In the second attack only five bombers of the enemy formation reached the bomb release point. In this instance the salvo of enemy bombs was closer to the carrier than in the first attack, but again no hits were obtained.

Sixteen of the eighteen attacking enemy bombers were shot down in this action. There was no damage to our surface forces.

It is impossible to estimate with accuracy the damage infiicted upon the enemy during these actions of February 27th. Observers in the PERTH consider that one Japanese 8-inch gun cruiser was sunk, a second 8-inch gun cruiser damaged and a destroyer sunk. It has also been reported that a cruiser of the MOGAMI Class was set on fire and three destroyers seriously damaged and left on fire or sinking.

H.M.A.S. PERTH and U.S.S. HOUS-

TON, which had received some damage in this action, reached Tanjong Priok at 7 o'clock the morning of Saturday, February 28th. Five U. S. destroyers reached Sourabaya after the action.

With the enemy in command of sea and air north of Java in overwhelming force the Allied command was faced with the problem of extricating the remaining Allied ships from a very dangerous situation. The way to Australia was barred by the 600 mile long Island of Java with the Straits at either end of it under enemy control.

After dark on 28th February H.M.A.S. PERTH and U.S.S. HOUSTON left Tanjong Priok with the intention of .passing through Sunda Strait during dark hours. During the night an enemy report from H.M.A.S. PERTH was received which indicated that she and U.S.S. HOUSTON had come into contact with a force of Japanese ships off St. Nicholas Point at about 11:30 P.M. Winter Sports Wane The major winter sport season ended on Mar. 7 when the teams of the Naval Academy and West Point clashed in five sports at Annapolis and on the Army's home grounds.

The Navy gymnasium team mrned in the only midshipmen win in the interservice contests, defeating Armys previously unbeaten gymnasts 31 to 23. Incidentally, Navy gym captain, Walter C. Blattman heads the list of individual scorers in the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastic League with 37 points.

Army's rifle and pistol teams also mrned in victories. The Cadet riflemen, firing on their own indoor range, kept up their undefeated swing, taking the midshipmen, 1,390 to 1,362. Navy's previously undefeated pistol team lost to the Army on the Naval Academy range, 1,372 to 1,308.

The West Point swimming team took six of nine first places in the Navy tank to defeat the middies, 44 to 31.

Basketball

In turning in their tenth straight triumph and the twelfth win in thirteen starts the Mountaineers were a flawless team but the Middies rose to the occasion in the second half and cut the visitors margin to 9 points. At this point the guarding was close and the contact hard and the big crowd of 5,000 was brought to its feet by the excitement.

Two Navy players, co-captain Bob Zoeller and Gene Huntemer, were removed for fouls in the late minutes and the West Virginians widened their margin after the count had stood 40 to 31 and 43 to 34.

Navy scored the first four points of the game but West Virginia scored the next fourteen before co-captain Bill Busik broke the slump for his mates by looping a running one-handed flip. Midway West Virginia led 26 to 11.

After the rest period Navy rallied somewhat with field goals while the Mountaineers provided by free throws.

Hamilton, given a brief rest, was rushed back into the game as Navy took the pace from the invaders and with five minutes to play suddenly became a threat.

Hamilton immediately flipped in a field goal, and a pair of fouls as Zoeller was ejected.

In the overtime play Busik scored on a snowbird and Huntemer threw in a pair of fouls, then widened the score further with a field goal on a fast cutting play. Freedman threw in a long range field goal and Wilson added a foul for the losers.

Navy trailed 17 to 9 at the half.

Zoeller gave the Navy the first goal two minutes after play opened but little Bob Gersten flipped in two field goals in a row to take the lead from the Tars. Then Reid Suggs sank the first pair of his five field goals netted from outside.

Navy started big John McTighe and Alan Cameron, captain-elect of football in place of Gene Huntemer and U. W. Patrick, but Patrick came in as Navy trailed 8 to 2. Just the same the middies trailed by 8 points in the low scoring first half which was marked by brilliant guarding by both teams. Despite fast handling of the ball neither the Tars nor Tarheels were able to work the ball under their opponents' basket.

GEORGETOWN

Dominating the play after the first five minutes the Navy basketball team defeated Georgetown, 51 to 36 on Feb. 25 in their annual clash.

The middies scored the first four points, but Georgetown took the lead at 7 to 6, after which Busik's eight consecutive goals gave the Navy team a lead which they never relinquished. Midway Navy had doubled the score at 26 to 13.

PENNSYLVANIA

The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team scored its fourteenth consecutive victory on Feb. 21 when it defeated Navy, 16 to 12 before 1,200 fans in Philadelphia.

In scoring their fifth victory of the season the Quakers won two bouts by falls and two by decisions, while the midshipmen won four bouts, as many as Penn had dropped in four previous meets this year, by decision.

W E S T VIRGINIA

The Navy wrestling team defeated an outclassed but game West Virginia squad, 34 to 0, Feb. 28 before 4,000 spectators.

The Middies won every bout, five of them by falls. The Mountaineer grapplers got only two match points during the entire meet, these coming in the bantamweight encounter.

Capt. Simeon Hall of West Virginia, fought hard against Earl Buckwalter but the midshipman was too experienced and remained unbeaten for the season, taking his seventh straight win in the 136 pound class. Al Smolin put up a battle against Navy's Mickey Bennett, but went down by a fall after 7 minutes, 10 seconds.

V. M. L Dropping only three decision bouts the Navy wrestling team ended its season on Mar. 7 by defeating the Virginia Military Instimte grapplers, 19 to 9- It was Navy's fifth win in eight meets.

The Navy gymnasium team went back into a contending position for the Eastern Intercollegiate League title on Feb. 28 in Philadelphia by defeating the Temple gymnasts, defending champions, 29 to 25.

Solan Hale, Middle tumbler, made the "victory possible by upsetting George 52ypula, Owl mat ace and National A. A, U. champion.

ARMY

The Naval Academy gymnasium team took first places in four of six events Mar. 7 to defeat the West Point cadets, 31 to 23, in an Army-Navy clash.

The midshipmen rolled up points in the horizontal bar, rope climb, flying rings and tumbling. Army gymnasts placed first on the side horse and on the parallel bars.

Blattman, Navy captain, won the opening horizontal bar event and placed second on the side horse. George Eberle, ^ot a second for Army on the horizontal bar, while Ben Vaughan placed third for Navy.

Bob Maloney, Army, took first honors on the side horse, with Lou Beeson, Army, in third place. These places tied the meet up 9-9.

Navy took its largest margin in the rope climb to pull ahead. George Davis -won first place for the middies with 3.8 seconds passing before he touched the pan and Dale Cox of Navy placed second, in 4.1 seconds. Bill Watkins, Army, came in third in 4.4 seconds.

Wally Frank took the parallel bars exercise for the Army but Larry Kurtz placed second for Navy. Frank Boyd of Army was third.

Navy took a first and third on the flying rings. Jim Parker, Jr., won the event with Abie Ellis in third place. Bill Hughes placed third for the Army.

Cardie Hale of Navy won the mmbling but Army got a second and third with Lee Marshall in second place.

COLUMBIA

The Navy varsity swimmers cracked two Naval Academy records Feb. 21 as they downed the Columbia tankmen, 43 to 32.

Bob Selmer, Navy, lowered the 150yard back stroke record for the third time this season, swimming the distance in 1:42.6â&#x20AC;&#x201D;1.7 seconds better than his old mark.

Earlier, the middle medley relay team, consisting of Selmer, Edleson and Robison, negotiated the 300-yard race in 3:05.8, lopping a half second off the previous record.

The Lions won five first places to the Navy's four but the midshipmen piled up second and third places.

Dave St. John of Columbia was the lone two event winner, taking the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races.

DARTMOUTH

Navy broke its own record for the 300 yard medley relay against Dartmouth Feb. 28, but dropped the swimming meet to the Indians, 39 to 36.

Selmer, LeRoy Edleson and Charles Robison sent the Middies off to a flying start, swimming the medley relay race in 3:05.(5â&#x20AC;&#x201D;.2 second better than the previous Academy mark they set last Samrday.

But John Storrs and Fred Worthern, Dartmouth's aces, came back to win the next two events. The meet was closely contested until the 440 yard free style race, when Worthern and Storrs placed first and second, respectively, to give the Indians their seventh victory.

Storrs and Worthern were the lone two-event winners, Storrs taking the 220 and 100 yard free style races and Worthern the 50 and 440 yard free style contests.

Dartmouth capmred five first places while Navy won the two relay events, fancy diving and the 200 yard breast stroke competition.

Jim O'Mara of the visitors bested Navy's ace, Selmer, in the 150 yard back stroke race.

ARMY

Sparked by Bill Criss, speed swimmer, the Army mermen defeated the Naval Academy tankmen on Mar. 7 by a 44 to 31 score.

The West Pointers took six first places in the nine events, with Criss mrning in

three of the wins. Navy took first honors in fancy diving, 150 yard back stroke and the 400 yard relay.

Criss won the 100 yard, 220 yard and 440 yard free style races. Frank Thomas, Navy, placed second in the 100 yard event, but Frank Scofield, Army captain, got second in the 220 yard race and Don Bruner, Army, was second in the 440 yard swim.

Scofield swam in the anchor position on the winning Army 300 yard medley relay team and took first place in the 50 yard free style race, outdistancing Henry Cook of Navy in the short spurt.

Selmer, Navy, broke his own record again in winning the 150 yard back stroke. He covered the distance in 1:41.7 to set a new Navy record and shatter his own mark of 1:44.3.

Navy mrned in its best performance in the fancy diving, won by Dick Krotkiewicz with Hack Wilson, his middle teammate in second place. After this event Navy was trailing 17 to 15, the closest they came to the Cadets during the contest.

Paul Coonquist won the 200 yard breast stroke for Army, with his teammate Lou Clay in second place.

The midshipmen closed the meet by taking the 400 yard relay after getting an early lead.

V. M. I. Navy's pistol team scored its third consecutive triumph Feb. 28, defeating Virginia Military Institute's shooters 1,308 to 1,281.

V. M. I. bested the middies in the slow fire by one point, 415 to 414, but bowed in the time and rapid firing. Lou Naiswald of V. M. I. was high gun with 268 with middies Tom McCleUan and Jack Little tying for second high with 265 each.

ARMY

The Army pistol team mrned back the previously undefeated Naval Academy pistol experts on Mar. 7, winning the inter-service meet, 1,372 to 1,308.

The West Pointers took the lead in every firing position. They won the slow fire with a 52 point advantage, took the time firing with a three point lead and

Outshooting two rivals in all firing positions the Plebe rifle team on Feb. 21 scored 1,346 points to defeat the freshmen teams of Xavier and Georgetown University. Xavier yearlings took the runner-up position. The Plebe gymnasium team took four first places in six events the same day to defeat the Penn State freshmen gymnasts, 31 to 23.

R. Hille and E. H. Spanger of the Plebe team. Hille was second.

Marvin Katerman, Penn State, took the rope climb in 5.3 seconds, just seventenths of a second ahead of his teammate, Starr Wirtschafter. Spanger placed third for the Plebes.

Alex Julian won the side horse and the parallel bars for the Plebes.

Winning six of the eight bouts the University of Pennsylvania freshmen wrestling team showed strength in every weight Feb. 21, to defeat the Plebes, 18 to 8. It was the fifth straight win for the young Quaker matmen.

The only fall of the meet went to Midshipman Joe Henson who threw Capt.

The Plebes took the lead at the start Feb. 21, to defeat the Maryland freshmen basketball team 37 to 33.

Spook Elliott, Plebe center, sparked his team with 12 points. Paul Slick and Paul CuUen, Maryland, got 21 points between them.

The Plebes took a 16 to 11 lead during the first quarter and boosted this to a 23-17 advantage at the half.

The Plebe fencers won with every weapon Feb. 21 in defeating the University of Pennsylvania freshmen, 17 to 10.

The young middies took the foil bouts, 5 to 4, won the epee contests, 6 to 3 and held a 6-3 edge with the sabre.

League and Dodies saved the Quaker freshmen from a shutout with the foils by taking two bouts apiece. Hemphill, plebe fencer, won all three of his foil bouts. Dodies also won two of the freshmen's three bouts with the epee.

It was the Plebes' third straight victory and Blair's first defeat in eight meets.

The Plebe gymnasts ended an undefeated season Feb. 28 by defeating the Temple University freshmen, 51 to 3.

Lieutenant Sima remembers, meeting such notables as Queen Marie of Rumania, Princess Lleana of Greece, Marshall Joffre, King Ferdinand, Marshall Petain, the Prince of Wales. He recalls playing before Presidents Wilson, Harding and Coolidge, when the most patriotic of all music was furnished by the band in their honor. One of the duties of a band leader is to greet visiting dignitaries in person as well as with the Star Spangled Banner.

"And while on the subject of the Japs, if "that bell' hasn't been placed in one of those old bathrooms in the basement of Bancroft, why not give it hell every time we give the Rising Sun a substantial push down beyond the horizon? Not in the sense of an old-fashioned small town Fourth of July celebration, but to pep up the morale of the Regiment as well as lifting the officers 'consigned' to the Academy out of the dumps. From personal experience in 1918 I can distinctly recall how we were the butt for those "rhinomatic' officers, and so their minds might be diverted from the Regiment to orders afloat. ""Altho this town is full of A. N. and M. C. (shades of Sidney K. Evans on Sunday mornings and his accent on the M. C ) , H. W. (Hump) Toomey is the only other 22'er in these parts to my knowledge. He's in charge of engineering for Pan American, but is about like the stray end of a rubber band with a sheaf of passports and an 'employee's pass' on the line, that, the nearest we have had lunch together has been over the phone.

"Alex M. Balfe, '30, is president of Merrill-Stevens Drydock Co., who are doing quite a bit of Navy work at 12th Ave. on the Miami river. Met him a couple years ago, but just recently learned that he too is an ex-Pampered Pet. "And all of these aviation cadets I see uniformed, on the streets, in night clubs, and—^well it's beyond my age and none of my affairs to learn if they know the significance of a block N, but this sure is some sailor's town. AU of which places me in the category of John Paul Jones coming to the surface and looking over the outfit with his long glass.

But a more mournful awakening of what has happened to quite a few of my years when I read the account of the JACOB J O N E S and the death of Jack Daub. In 1915 I was a smdent (?) at Kishi. Jack's father was housemaster and fellow tenant of the same dormitory. My room was above the Daubs' apartment on the first floor, and one night we heard the most unusual noises for a teen-aged boy's dorm.

The next morning we learned that John Jusms Daub was with us. From the end of the following year when I left I lost all account of him, but I remember him as a "toddler' with a smile for everyone.

T. (Nate) Cooper, '94, became a seaman 2nd class, as he was in charge of the Philadelphia Recruiting Office. In 13 months I served on 2 "cans,' was Admiral Ben Toppon's orderly (then Commandant of the Phila. Yard) who had me detailed to Naval Intelligence, sent up for Pay Corps exams, but couldn't be commissioned on account of age; so was made an acting supply officer until I became disgusted after repeated requests for free transportation to Queenstown on a car. My last resort was the procurement of a 3rd alta. appointment, whereupon I obtained leave to prep at Buck's. Washington was convenient so by exam, time I was first to Chick du Pont who passed, but my Senator didn't let me down for I found later that my appointment came from 1500 Penna. Ave. However, too much down draft thru the breech and concussion while in the cans the year before put me up next door to Boot Hill—overlooking the Severn, and there was some talk of sending me over to Washington indefinitely; so I put in for a medical resignation. ""The end of my lament is that now there doesn't seem to be any place in the outfit for me; yet I'm to sign up for the draft next week, as I'm a couple of months or so this side of 44, which is one helluva position to be in, for I used to expect a coyote to sneak up behind me everytime I found myself west of the Bromo-Seltzer Tower.

Don "Bull" Eraser—spent the weekend of February 7th down here. Don is commandant of Midshipmen at the Admiral Farragut Academy. He expects to be commissioned in the Naval Reserve shortly. Don is married and has a son, aged 2 on Jan. 30th. With Don formerly were ""Hi" Smith and ""Dud" Hill, both of whom are now on active duty. ""Holy" Lee, '35, is now at the Admiral Farragut Academy — married — instructing midshipmen.

Don tells us that: (1) Dick BIy recently left Lakehurst for Sunnyvale. Dick had been at Lakehurst for several years —was very active as an instmctor for Naval Reserves. ( 2 ) Doug Cordiner and ""Red" Blount '35, are now at Lakehurst.

(3) Jack Weller is with Glenn Martin at Baltimore after first having had a fling at instructing at the Admiral Farragut Academy last year.

(4) ""Si" Randolph is in Chicago— married—has two children.

Jack Bain tells us that: (1) In Washington, D. C , he ran into ""Fink" Fisher, now back in as a Reserve officer, after having resigned and gotten out of the service several years ago. Fink is in the Bureau of Aeronautics.

We are sorry to announce the death of Dick Blanchard which occurred in Honolulu, several months ago, prior to December 7th. The stomach ailment which

caused his physical retirement while at the academy reoccurred and the attack was fatal. Dick studied Medicine, at Harvard, we believe, after leaving the Academy. At the time of his death, he was serving his internship at Queen's Hospital, Honolulu, T. H. Ed Worthington has joined the ranks, along with Dewey Johnston, of those claimed by Davy Jones. ""Ned" was killed while on patrol duty, somewhere out in the Pacific, on January 31, 1942. ""Ned" was serving in a cruiser aviation division.

"Ned" was a Baltimore boy and is survived by his father, one brother and two sisters. This information is quoted from the Baltimore Evening Sun of February 9, 1942.

The Postgraduate School is still in operation, in accordance with the Navy Dept's Policy. Another communication group of Reserve Officers graduated in December, and a new group has convened, this group is scheduled to remain until July.

Another group of ""constructors" graduated in February. Most of them have been ordered to Navy yards, private yards, and some to repair ships.

Those of us at school who wish we were at sea, and that means about 100 per cent, are still hoping that the Dept. may change its policy and that orders to sea will be forthcoming. Until then we fight the ""War of Books."

The new V-7 group of Midshipmen is being put through its paces. The month of June, 1942, will see well over one thousand young officers added to the fleet, from the U. S. N. A. alone!

Speaking of hospitals, we are reminded that Clyde "Firpo" Caldwell, when last heard from was at the hospital, San Diego, Calif. Where is he now? Let's hear from you, ""Firpo."

It is with deep regret that we announce Art Newman's joining Davy Jones' tribe. Art was exec of the Truxtun which sank recently off the Newfoundland coast. We knew Art very well and his loss is deeply felt.

Although we think that Otto Schatz's idea of a memorial to our dead is a fine one, we think it well to let that matter ride until after the war.

A better idea, for the present, is advanced by Don Scherer: "Let's buy U. S. Defense Savings Bonds with the two thousand or so dollars which we have in the class treasury fund."

A canvass of opinions at the P. G. school shows unanimous agreement with this proposal.

We are sure that if we could contact every member of '34 each would agree with this proposal.

The regular luncheon meeting of the Naval Academy Association of New York was held Wednesday, March 11, 1942, 12:30 p.m. at Midday Club, 25 Broad Street, N. Y. C. Our able speaker on this occasion was Captain C. Abel-Smith, R. N., whose subject was "Naval Aircraft," and was thoroughly enjoyed by our usual large attendance.

Preliminary plans for the Annual Dinner have been completed under the guidance of Len Kirby, the maestro of these afFaits, and the same general outlines of the very successful Dinner of last year are to be followed again. The place is the Hotel Pierre, 5th Avenue and 6lst Street, the time 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 27, 1942, the tenative price $3.50. Dinner will be served at 8:00 p.m., the hour from 7:00 to 8:00 being devoted to warming up. The dinner last year was generally agreed to be one of the best ever held and inasmuch as the coming affair is planned to follow the same form, all hands may look forward to a big evening. More details will be broadcast later, but be sure to mark the date NOW, and lay plans for rounding up your cohons.

The offices of President and Vice-President are to be filled by elections at the coming Annual Dinner and Directors for the various Divisions must also be named. The present Secretary, Calvert Carey and the present Treasurer, E. J. Sadler, were elected last year for the regular two year terms, hence these offices need not be filled at this time.

In accordance with procedvure prescribed by the Constitution of the Association the Executive Committee has seleaed nominees for the offices of President and Vice-President, as follows: President Glenn O. Carter,—-'05 (present incumbent) Vice-President N . O. Wynkoop,—"16 These names will be submitted to the membership on ballots which provide for the addition of other nominees by the members prior to voting should they so desire.

SAN FRANCISCO BRANCH If our general membership realized the important and worthwhile dinner meetings which we are holding at the Army and Navy Club, attendance would be one hundred per cent.

The type of speaker, the topic and the quality of attendance attest to the worthwhile and extremely important meetings which are being held. In no other group and under no other conditions could a more representative and informative gathering be found, and it is to be hoped that our membership in general will

realize this and make appropriate response by attending our next meeting. This next meeting will be held on the first Wednesday of April—April 1st—at 6:30 P. M. at the Army and Navy Club, Fairmont Hotel; and on this occasion Professor N. Wing Mah will be the guest speaker and will present a topic and a message of the same high order and with the same clearness and definiteness which has charaaerized our preceding speakers. The Professor represents the Department of Political Science at the University of California, and he will speak on China in the present Pacific situation.

Our last speaker needs no introduaion, for it was none other than John Thompson, who has just returned from the Rio Conference where he was the guest of the Brazilian Government. Before telling us of this important gathering John reported that at the Embassy he met Admiral Beauregard, '07; Lieutenant Gus Long, '26; Lieutenant George Gellhorn, Jr., '25; and Fred Cunningham, '20, who is the third secretary of the Embassy. The Navy Mission included Captain E. P. Eldredge, '12; Commander Milo Williams, '22; Lieutenant Commander Brownie Temple, '24; Lieutenant Commander Al Jarrell, '25; and Lieutenant Al Fitzwilliam, '27. These alumni have been enumerated so that their many friends and classmates may know their whereabouts and their activities; and it was most thoughtful of John to bring back from each and every one of the foregoing alumni their personal remembrances to those of us ashore and afloat. John Thompson reports that upon landing in Rio he first looked up the Navy men whose names appear above, and he then went into some detail to tell us of the large German representation and of the activities, both obvious and those less obvious, of the fifth column in South America. He emphasized the undoubted loyalty of Brazil to the United States and gave us a splendid word picture of President Vargas both from his personality and the psychological standpoint. President Vargas was voted by John as the key man of the Conference. The fast movement of tempo of the Rio Conference was described, as was also the problems centering about the Chilean and Argentine representatives and the points which they stood for.

It was the speaker's personal feeling that the most important argument in South America in establishing solidarity in the Western Hemisphere is to show our sister republics some very definite and bona fide naval and military successes in the present conflict. Other factors, of lesser importance at the present moment but which will be of greater importance in the final analysis, include the many defense projects which the United States is promoting at proper points in the Caribbean and on the South American continent. Japanese infiltration and fifth column activity along side those of Germany were given their proper share of attention, and the supply of munitions, tanks, planes, air fields, and railroad building in the various countries, particularly Brazil, were adequately covered. The potential danger of invasion from Africa by way of Brazil left no doubt as to its feasibility, and from this point John took us on a visit to the Caribbean and its many points of defense including Trinidad.

We were assured of the solid friendliness of Central America, and the speaker very aptly pointed out that particularly in Argentina the psychology and culture are predominantly European. This is based on several factors, the

two most important being that most of the upper Argentines have spent much time in Europe and their sons and daughters are educated there; and amplifying this there has been up to the present time a very active trade with Europe. These factors have readily created, in the speaker's words, "an Argentina which is an European outpost in the Western Hemisphere." In closing, emphasis was laid on the fact that Brazil now, where the prevalent language is Portugese, is the greatest Latin nation in the world—Italy having declined and Spain being in the throes of a post war period; and that the future of Brazil—a staunch friend of the United States—lies with us, and the future looks bright.

Guests whom we were most happy to welcome included Major General Upshur, U. S. M. C ; Mr. Godfrey Fisher, Consul General of Great Britain; Captain W. van den Donker, Royal Netherlands'Navy, who spoke briefly on the shelling of Aruba where he was stationed at the time and which engagement he witnessed and participated in; Mr. B. D. Ochse, Netherlands' East Indies Trade Commissioner; Lieutenant Commander Wytema, Royal Netherlands' Navy; Lieutenant Commander Cross, Royal Navy; Lieutenant Hullenbeck of the Navy Flying Corps; Mr. George McNair, Vice President of Riggs Optical Company; and Mr. S. W. Selfridge, an official of the Standard Oil Company, whose son is a Plebe in the Naval Academy.

In closing a very bright note was sounded when Commander Haight paid the only dues for the coming year which was paid at this meeting and raised the hope, in so doing, that others at the next meeting who have not paid their dues will follow the good example set by the Commander of the Net Depot and help the treasury along the paths of the new deal into a bright fumre.

Hap Lyon, now Captain Harry N. Lyon, has recently been made Aide to Brigadier General Upshur, U. S. M. C , and may be found nowadays busily attending to his duties at Marine Corps Headquarters.

It is with deep sympathy that we announce that a sudden accident took Mrs. Wilbur, the wife of one of our members, the Honorable Federal Judge Curtis Wilbur; and the sympathies of our Alumni are extended to him in this hour of loss.

Frank H. Wickhorst, '27, who has been on the coaching staff of the University of California has been detailed to take charge of training of Navy aviators at one of the Eastern colleges and is leaving to fulfill those duties.

And now a special word of praise to Captain Lewis Mesherry, known to most of us affectionately as Lewis, for the splendid cooperation which he has afforded us at the Army and Navy Club. While Lewis is a retired Army officer, it is safe to assume that down in his heart he always had a soft spot for the Navy.

Please note that our meetings now have been changed to the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be held on the first Wednesday of April—April 1st—at 6:30 P. M. at the Army and Navy Club at the Fairmont Hotel and that an extraordinarily good speaker will address us.
