"You will, I know, be interesred in learning that Bailey, Banks and Biddle were able to strike off abour a dozen of the buttons, which were delivered ro me on Friday afternoon at the BeUevue-Stratford Hotel, and the reception of these buttons was most enthusiastic. The tsvelve buttons were sold in abour ten minutes and alumni from various parrs of rhe counrry left their money with me ($1.25) to get buttons and mail them to them as soon as possible. Our football coach, Major Larson got one of the firsr ones and returned to Annapolis proudly wearing it in his buttonhole.

Class of 1936 Miniature figures showing uniforms of commissioned officers at the Navy and Marine Corps will soon make a long needed display in the Naval Academy museum.

The President of the class of 1936, O. G. Sexton, has informed the Superintendent of the Naval Academy that the class fund may be expended as the Superintendent may desire and that he believes that all the members of his class will applaud the expenditure for these miniature figures.

Additions to the U. S. N. A. Yacht Club The ever-growing, popular Naval Academy Yacht Club is about to acquire two new fine yachts to join with the Vamarie. we have just learned.

The late Dudley F. Wolfe, noted sportsman who lost his life in a mountain climbing accident in Tibet last July, left his famous racing yacht Highland Light to the Naval Academy along with a s$ 100,000 maintenance fund.

A sloop, Highland Light was built in 1931 at Neponsett, Maine. She is 68 feet overall, 50 feet at the water line, 15 foot beam and draws 10 feet.

Special legislation must be passed by Congress before she can be accepted and it is anticipated that she will not be available before next fall.

The other yacht is the auxiliary schooner Freedom which has been offered to the Naval Academy by Mr. Sterling Morton of Chicago, 111. She is 89 feet overall, 66 feet at the Waterline, has a 20-foot beam and draws 10 feet. A 175-horsepower gasoline engine will push her along at 9 knots.

Fishing on a Presidential Cruise

A whole lot of people doubtkss wonder jusr how good the fishing really is on a Presidential cruise. I hope rhe following description of what transpired when I tried out my luck at one of the so-called Best Spots will convince skeptics that when a place gets such a designation it can be good.

During the firsr part of the Houston's cruise the Presidential party and members of the crew who were so inclined were getting plenty of fish. They caught everything from the small Pompano, hooked on a trolling lure, to a gigantic Jew Fish which succumbed to the fascination offered by a chunk of bacon fat lowered over the ship's stern on a swab twine. Of course there were sharks—all kinds of rhem. At Clipperton Island the waters were fairly alive wirh rhe big monsters. More often than not when a fisherman hooked inro a game fish, he would feel the fish's first rush, then be able to reel line in at a good clip to find only the head remaining on his line.

Sometimes, too, they caught the sharks, but then it wasn't so much fun.

"The Galapagos Islands is a fisherman's paradise," the ones in the know said. "Wait until we anchor at Hood Island, and you'll see fish—more fish than you evei saw before."

"Okay," I said, "I'll wait."

The Galapagos Islands which are owned by Ecuador are a strange group of islands—strange for a variety of reasons. In the first place, the Islands, although cut in their midst by the Equator, possess climatic conditions more nearly in keeping with those of the temperate zones than with their latitude.

This is caused by the cold waters of the Humbolt Current which after sweeping

up from the Antatctic regions to touch the coast of South America ar Chile unloose their flood against the shores of the Islands. Another reason probably lies in the fact that they are the natural habitat of unfamiliar animal life, namely: the ferocious looking though harmless marine iguana; the tortoise; the fightless comorant; the seal; and various domestic animals which have turned wild (The pigs and dogs are dangerous).

A person who goes ashore gets the eerie impression that these volcanic Islands have seen better days—in some dim prehistoric age. At present few people, if any, live on any except one of the group. However, some years ago, when three people elected to set up a tropical trysting place on James Island, the Galapagos were cast rather precipirarely into the spotlight of notoriety.

What caused journalistic minds to turn handsprings and set the tongues of the world wagging with a vengeance was the mysterious tragedy of the Baroness and her two lovers. Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrborn of Ausrria was the cause^—But that is another story.

So I bided my time until that day. A boat was then available and everything was set. On checking over my fishing gear I discovered rhat the line on my reel was frayed so I hastily borrowed another one which had comparative new line. But instead of the usual star where one could set the drag ro any degree of tightness, the borrowed reel had, unluckily for me, only a small thumb piece of leather acting as a brake against the fish. There were four of us in the boat: the Navigator; the First Lieutenant; the Radio Officer; and myself—all old hands

ar ocean fishing except myself. A steady offshore wind in the neighborhood of fifteen knots was kicking up a short and choppy sea.

As soon as the boat cleared the gangway we put out our trolling lures and adjusted ourselves for results. But we didn't have to wait. The First Lieutenant gave out a yell, warning us to reel in our lines. Then very soon he brought in a beautiful fish of the grouper family weighing about five pounds. This kept on, time and time again, with eveiybody bringing in fish except myself.

By this time the motor launch was pulling away from the ship in the direction of a jutting point which my companions said looked just like the place where rhe big ones would be hanging out. We were paralleling rhe shore, keeping offshore about a quatter of a mile.

About this time the Radio Officer struck a big Wahoo that kept him busy for twenty minutes before bringing him ro gaff. All rhis, of course, was eating up the time, and so far I hadn't even got a nibble.

I changed to the other of my two lures, spirting on it for good luck. We were rounding rhe point when the bottom of the ocean belched fish. "I got a strike"— "I got one"—"Me too"—Everybody except myself again. Disheartened, I starred to reel in. Then somerhing almosr tore the pole out of my hands. I bore down on the leather drag with all my force, and although smoke seemed to be curling up from the friction, yard after yard of line went out. It kept on going until I saw the bare metal of the spindle. But it stopped at last, leaving only four or five feet of extra line.

must have lost their fish because they were shouting well-meaning advice. By pumping I managed to regain twenty yards of precious line. My arms ached with the effort.

"You're doing fine," somebody yelled into my ear. Then catastrophe swooped down. Wirh a plop the reel came off the pole and fell into the bottom of the boat.

There being nothing else to do I struggled with the reel, hoping to put it back on before the fish got away. This I finally accomplished after a seemingly long time, but then I found out that I had put the reel on backward. I was having a difficult time now working in the fish, but the fish was having his troubles, too, as he had also to pull against the increased friaion. I reeled in, regaining as much line as possible until I got to a point where the fish put on all brakes.

Finally, seeing that neither of us was getting anywhere, I underrook a bold srep and took the reel off altogether. But putting it back on correctly was an entirely different matter. All my fingers felt like thumbs, and no matter how I squinted and sweat, every way seemed wrong for that reel. However, I clamped it on anyway, and was quite overjoyed to see that the line finally had a fair lead through the guides.

I reeled in yard after yard of slack line, there being not the faintest kind of an answering rug. The others shrugged rheir shoulders and said tough luck. The boat commenced purring for another run.

Then just as I was getting in the last bit of line the reel jammed. I couldn't budge it another inch. A surging pull followed this, and I knew I still had my fish.

A lightning flash ripped the water, taking almost all the line out again. I worked on that fish, sometimes pumping in the line and at other times trying to stop his strong rushes. The First Lieutenant came up behind me and slipped a fishing brace over my shoulders.

I fought that fish from the bow, the stern; from standing and sitting positions, and sometimes from rather odd angles. Once again the reel came off, but I slipped it back on in a split second. All this time the fish was coming in closer, switching from one side of the boat to the other. I had to go around the bow each time so the line wouldn't get hung up on the keel of the boat. Once, it did catch on some part of the keel. I was sure that this was the end. But it worked free when I dipped the end of the pole deep into the water.

The Squalus Comes into Harbor

Commander Charles B. Momsen, U. S. Navy, was standing quietly at attention in Acting Secretary Edison's office in the Navy Department with several members of the rescue and salvage crew that raised the submarine "Squalus."

Cameras were clicking, reporters were busy taking notes. For this was the small group chosen from all of their fellow workers to hear the letter of commendation from The President being read to them in praise of the magnificent efforts they had all put forth in bringing to a victorious close the greatest undersea engineering job in history. On completion of the reading of The President's letter Acting Secretary Edison added his splendid commendation. The little ceremony was soon over. It had lasted a bare half hour.

Commander Momsen had devoted years of study and practical scientific thought since the sinking of the ill-fated S-51, to development of means to get men out of sunken submarines should such tragedies ever occur again. The "lung" invented by him and his little company of experts had become known to all the world as the "Momsen Ltmg."

The diving bell used in the rescue work of the "Squalus" had been tried out many times before in practice by him in preparation for just such an emergency.

He knew it would work where others often doubted. The long years of experimental effort had not been in vain. The efficiency of the diving bell resulted in the heroic rescue of 33 members of the crew still alive.

The scene shifted from the Secretary's office to "Swede" Momsen's home in Washington. His charming wife greeted us at the door. Inside we met for the

first time his son, home on September leave after "starring" in his plebe year at Annapolis. "Swede's" son is the first "baby" of the 1920 graduating class to become a Midshipman at the Naval Academy. His daughter rushed by us apparently intent on filling a date.

We looked over Commander Momsen's personal scrap book of the entire rescue efforts and then begged him to talk about his toughtest job that had just been completed. It had taken 113 days to bring the "Squalus" to the surface and bring her into harbor.

"We had just completed a series of experiments at the Washington Navy Yard to determine the point of pressure at which the breathing of oxygen was safe and at which the maximum amount of carrier gas was eliminated when we got word of the accident," Commander Momsen began. "Previously we had completed the decompression tables for helium, and when we first arrived in Portsmouth we carried helium equipment with us. But we didn't use it on the first few dives."

Commander Momsen and his crew of experts were under way with their equipment from the Navy flying field at Anacostia one hour and forry-five minutes after the accident occurred.

"After we got started in our rescue efforts the performance of air in diving was so poor we had to adopt helium for immediate use. As soon as we used helium instead of air the change was tremendous, divers' minds were clear, and they were able to perform intricate tasks which were impossible while breathing air."

The Navy's best divers with the "Falcon" as leader of the salvage craft dug in

for the duration, determined that nothing should stop them till the "Squalus" gave up her living and belched forth her dead. There were 240 feet of water to work in which became 249 feet at high tide. And the "Squalus" was bedded in mud. It was to be slow work, what with running lines under the sunken hull inches at a time, blowing out compartments and rigging the pontoons for lifting operations.

"We made a total of 246 dives while preparing the ship for the first successful lift. Most of these dives we continued to make with helium. For the entire job 628 dives were made. There were only two cases of 'bends' and these two were caused by rapid rate of ascent rather rhan inadequate decompression."

For a deep job this was a record that had never been equaled.

"We had a total of 48 masters and first-class divers and in order to keep them fresh we kept one-third of them on leave at all times. The experienced divers were used in regular rotation; we never selected particular men for particular jobs, because by rotating you avoid introduction of individual jealousies, discontent, etc. Later on the less experienced divers fell into line and took their regular turns with the others."

We had read on June 19th that Lieutenant Morrison had made the 150th dive and had succeeded in running the tunnel 31 feet under the stern, two-thirds of the way. Had any other officers been used in diving?

"Yes, there were seven line officers qualified as divers on the ship. One of these, the one you mentioned, Lieutenant J. H. Morrison, made as many dives as any of the regular divers. In spite of

fact we didn't see the hull till we got her into the Navy Yard and started pumping out the compartments. Altogether we had three successful attempts to lift her and three unsuccessful lifts. That first lift coming after 50 days preparation was heartbreaking. Hoses were cut away, lines parted, everything was in a general shambles. 190 feet of water. This made diving operations easier and we prepared her for the next lift about a week later. That lift was successful, just like the first one, and we were able to tow her in four and a half miles further to a depth of 93 feet."

On August 31st after diving operations had become materially easier the "Talcon" ran into bad weather. A nor'easter forced the 'Talcon" to break loose from her sunken cargo and head for port. Air lines were cut loose and capped, 20 foot waves made it impossible to continue operations.

"This storm got worse and worse and it was not until the 13 th of September that we got the final lift. There wasn't much to see on these lifts, as a matter of JANUARY,

"The diving bell had been operated many times before in drills. We had spent three years working and training in the use of the diving bell. Commander Allen McCann did the experimental work with the earliest diving bell, by doing actual operations in company with a submarine. We were fortunate to have him in charge of the bell work with the 'Squalus.' Of course there was much excitement in using it for an actual rescue. The first diving bells ever used were made from the S-1 aeroplane tank.

We had cut this in half and two diving bells were made out of it at the Navy Yard, New York, for test at Key West, Florida. After two years of study the presenr rescue chamber was developed and tested. We have made very few changes in it since that time.

"We had planned that we would make four trips of the diving bell. The first time it brought up seven. You can imagine our excitement when these first men were rescued. I told them to send up eight on the second trip and when it arrived it was so crowded that my plan to rescue nine in the third and fourth attempts seemed impossible.

Then lo and behold we found that nine had come up instead of eight and it would not be necessary for the bell to make a fifth trip. So we brought them up seven, nine, nine, eight. The last trip the wire jammed in a reel. W e tried to pull it clear with the preventer or safety wire, but this wire stranded until we had only one strand of wire left. That is why the last group were left sitting on the bottom for over four hours. We really were not worried for they were fairly comfortable and of course had plenty of air."

The work of removing the bodies from the "Squalus" was begun under flood lights. Everything indicated that the men had died almost instantly. One body could not be found. It must have drifted out of an open hatch after the first lift.

Commander Momsen left us to start packing, off on his next duty in command of the U. S. S. "Sirius." After a trip to the Pacific Coast he will fill many lecture engagements, among them one to the Harvard Engineering Society and another to the Baltimore Engineering Society. The whole country is indebted to Commander Momsen and all the others for the painstaking research and hard work that enabled so many men to be rescued in this, the Navy's hardest peacetime job. It is to be hoped that they will never be called upon again in repetition of their past experiences.

The Friday night rain dampened the ardor of ticket peddlers and by morning the ducats were down to four-forty. At 11, you could get them for anything you wanted to pay. But nothing except North Stand Seats, from which you can view only the "Seats of the Mighty." . . .

Early Friday night, though, the picture was different. For eighteen-eighty you could get two burlesque tickets with a brace of Army-Na\7 game tickets thrown in—sort of a double feature—or Ladies' chinaware night. .. . Heliotrope peddlers were wearing boards displaying "your favorite colors." They still smelled of heliotrope... . The lobby of rhe Bellevue was jammed ro rhe gun'les and at the bar they were standing four deep. . . . For a buck you could get two gulps of Scotch. . . . "Fats" Meecum wangled the best number of the week. He bought two tickets at list price and someone tossed in a quart of five-year-old Rye for good measure. His friend must have known Fats could use the libation The muchly increased space allowed for dancing this year spared many a scuffed ankle but made the ballroom look about as vacant as a newly laid out graveyard. . . . Everyone had a large evening, including one of the boys whose tails and white tie disguised a swell jitterbug. . . . They came from far and near. . . . Larry Kuhn, '33, had his bride of four months in tow.

They both recommend marriage highly. . . . The "register" set up in Navy headquarters ^ot as much attention as last year's girl friend. About ten men signed it; mostly local talent. . . . BEAVER FALLS PA It CAN, It SHALL Be Donel It is to be marvelled at the way the regiment built up the great spirit that carried the Big Blue and Gold through a hard battle to win over a fighting Army team.

Two weeks before the game the spirit of the regiment did not seem to be too good, to put it mildly, and something liad to be done.

Someone, we know not who, struck on a slogan that made a change in each and every midshipman—yes—and everyone in Crabtown.

IT CAN, IT SHALL BE DONE. Midshipmen were somewhat bewildered to arrive in class and see this slogan in each classroom. After reading it for about a week, it began to sink in.

It meant the Army game!

The week before the game the regiment went wild. It had taken on the old Navy spirit. Signs and banners plastered Bancroft Hall. Classes sang and cheered to and from class. Tecumseh's face was given a real coat of war paint. And the Thursday evening before the game when the team departed for Philadelphia, not one but four huge bonfires on the terrace added a most inspiring touch to that great demonstration.

The day came—the regiment marched

on the field their every step clearly showing their determination to win—and when the regimental commander reported the regiment he added: IT CAN, IT SHALL BE DONE.'

Victory Dinner Admiral Wilson Brown, Superintendent of the U. S. Naval Academy, and Mrs. Brown tendered the victorious Naval Academy football team and coaches a Victory Dinner on Saturday evening, December the ninth.

After the dinner the party attended the Victory Hop in Dahlgren Hall where the members of the team were presented to those who attended the occasion.

The following limerick was the late President Woodrow Wilson's favorite.

Navy fumbled and Hutson recovered for Army on his 24-yard line. Then on fourth down and 10 to go. Hatch, from kick position went through all the motions and then struck out around Navy's right end and made 13 yards and a first down.

Army tried a pass which failed. On the next play they tried the same play and connected, with Hatch passing to Adams for 32 yards and a first down on Navy's 35. The Navy followers began to get the jitters as Army moved down the field for the first time in the game.

Again Army fumbled but recovered.

On rhe next play, Gillette, who played a whale of a game for Navy, intercepted Army's pass and that ended Army's threat.

After several plays. Navy kicked and Army returned the ball to their own 40.

Navy was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness.

Army apparently had decided to take to the air. Hatch heaved one down the field and Lenz, who was playing an inspired game, intercepted and ran the ball back to Army's 42 on a brilliant run.

After several plays and an off-side penalty against Navy, Whitehead lofted one of his best kicks of the game. The ball rolled out on Army's two and the Cadets were in a hole.

Army's Brown got off a beautiful punt from deep in his own end zone. The ball sailed 60 yards to Shafer on his 46 and he brought it back 10 yards.

Shafer then tossed a pass, one of three which Navy attempted in the game, which Foster took for 10 yeards and a first down on Army's 36. Navy kept marching and on fourth down made it another first down on Army's 26.

They rushed her to a hospital in Baltimore and Melissa slowly recovered.

Major "Swede" Larson was a happy man after the game. He sute had given his best to the team. After the game he said: "Boy, am I happy. I am so happy I came right up here to the dressing room and had a good cry for myself."

Bill Wood, Army's coach, is reported to have said: "There's not much for me to say. Captain Harry Stella played a great game.

You can't alibi a licking."

Who said the residents of Crabtown are not for Navy football teams? The stay-at-homes sure put on a real demonstrarion after the game. And, when the team returned on Sunday all Crabtown clogged every available inch of space near the old Short Line Station.

The old victory bell took a terrific beating, too. Hope that becomes a yearly event!

Many were the penalties called against Navy in the game-—on four occasions they drew 15-yard penalries for unnecessary roughness, clipping and holding and on five occasions were guilty of off-side and delaying the game. Sounds like the game was rough. Yer, on the other hand, it was not as bad as it sounds. Navy was playing a hard, determined game and a bit too determined on those occasions.

Only on two occasions has Navy mauled their Army comrades more decisively in the entire history of the forty contests. The score now stands: Navy— 15; Army—22; 3 tied. Keep going Navy.

Twenty-nine Navy players made their N-star in the game. Every first classman on the squad got into the fray which we consider a fine bit of consideration on the part of "Swede" Larson.

W e learn that the scalpers got scalped.

Earlier in the week of the game they gave away a pair of pasteboards with every purchase of a necktie. The price far exceeded the cost of the tickets. Game day found few patrons and neckties were nor in demand.

The hawkers took it on the chin, too.

Hie fog and intermittent rain threw them for a loss.

It is reported that forty-five thousand hot dogs, twenty thousand cans of hot chocolate and fourteen thousand cups of coffee were dispensed during the game.

If facilities had permitted we firmly believe that at least twice those figures would have been reached.

On Monday afternoon, after the Army game, we saw a whole flock of midshipmen kicking, passing and handling the JANUARY,

old pigskin. They are getting ready for the next Army game, it seems. Well, as we see it, the football picture is a rosy one now. Prospects for next season are very good.

Last year's plebes will supply some excellent material to bolster up the team.

The swimmers, gymnasts, wrestlers, fencers and riflists also swung into their hard grind, getting set for their heavy schedules which open in January.

Foster 1940 Navy Football Captain Midshipman Richard E. Foster is Navy's 1940 football captain.

Hailing from Piedmont, Califotnia, Foster is of slight build, weighing 165 pounds and standing 6 feet. At the beginning of the season he was an end on the B squad. Through his outstanding work early in the season he was drafted up to the varsity. His work improved steadily and he soon clearly demonstrated that he is a smart, alert end. He is a good pass receiver and a fine, popular leader.

Coach Johnny Wilson sent in 48 Plebe players, and each combination was able to score.

The first team less the services of their great end Zoellers, who was on the bench nursing a broken hand. Gene Flathman, giant 245 pound stellar tackle who was also on the bench with ankle trouble, and Ploszay, a husky, hard charging back who was out because of trouble with the Academic Department, started the game and within five minutes, Busik scored.

Substitutions then began when Hurt, another very promising back, took over from Busik. A few minutes later Hurt hit the line and broke into the clear to run 15 yards for the second score. Bill Vitucci, the Plebes guard, who is a fine placement kicker, converted on this attempt after missing the first try.

The Plebes scored in every period except the second.

Bullis' score came late in the fourth quarter when Troxall took a flat lateral from Patchel and ran 70 yards for the score.

During the season the Plebes licked six opponents, Massanutten Academy, 34-6; Admiral Farragut Academy, 7-0; Kiskimentas Springs School, 38-0; Bordentown Military Academy, 16-7; Hun School, 47-0; and Bullis School, 42-6.

They ran up a total of 184 points to 19 against them.

Johnny Wilson, his coaching staff, and the Plebe players are to be congratulated on their fine season and great team. They should add materially to next yeat's varsity eleven. In particular, Busik, Zoellers, Flathman, and Ploszay, should become next year's stars for Navy while many others of the great Plebe eleven will be found in the varsity games of 1940.

Outstanding for the Bullis team was Ed. Dove 145 pound back. He is an elusive back who runs well.

For the Plebe eleven; Massy, tackle; Ringenberg, cenrer; Vitucci, guard; Busik, Zechella, Cameron, Siegfried, Hurt and Clark, backs were outstanding.

The Graduate System of Coaching In a recent article in the sport section of the Baltimore Sun we ran across an article by Jesse A. Linthicum, one of the foremost sport writers in the country.

Midshipmen for more than twenty-five years have stood, uncovered, in the crypt of the Naval Academy Chapel, paying their humble respects to a great sailor. That the remains sealed in the casket are the true remains of John Paul Jones has been argued and the abundance of proof verifying their authenticity may never fully convince some of the skeptics. Fortunately, this hue and cry is dying down and the doughty skipper of the

safe in the belief there will be few to speak against him and what he did.

Few people, save historians, have been aware of the struggles that dominated his life and which would have killed the ambition in weaker men. But just as John Paul, a youthful Scotsman fought against the obstacles faced by a fatherless youth and won, his will to reach his full stature carried him above the petty bickerings of selfish politicians and brought him glory. Frustrated, time after time, John Paul Jones saw his greatest dreams die away, until only one remained: T h e Liberty for which he fought. H i s idea of a great American fleet was to lie dormant many years, and even his personal wish to command a ship of the line was crushed when t h e Frigate America was given to the French as a tribute.

For those to whom Naval Aviation is merely a phrase, DIVE BOMBER should prove highly enlightening, for here is a book that will not frighten the novice or deter the ambitious youths in their desire to follow Naval Aviation as a career.

This is a history of a student, beginning with his first interview, carrying through the many phases of training and ending with the author being commissioned an ensign. The various types of ships are discussed simply and no one, contemplating taking u p aviation in the U. S. Navy, should omit DIVE BOMBER from his list of MUST reading.

T h e name of our association has been changed to United States Naval Academy Alumni Association of San Francisco as previously suggested, and the by-laws were changed unanimously by all those present as well as by twenty-two votes returned by mail in response to about two hundred ballots sent out. T h e changes in the by-laws have also previously been published and are known to the membership.

Allan Guthrie writes November 11th and advises that many of our membership are falling by the wayside insofar as sending their one dollar subscriptions to him and continuing their support of him is concerned. H e further states that he has had to drop several of our prominent members because of non-payment of dues. Can this failure be due to lack of interest or disapproval or just plain neglect?

Your secretaty here continues to give him the news of our branch, and if possible our membership should get behind him and help h ' m along. If you approve of the Alumni Bulletin, give him a thought and send in your subscription—if you do not approve of him, write and tell him so. Allan has done a good work out here and merits encouragement and support.

It was quite heartening to find some paying their dues for the coming year, and the occasion is taken at this time to request the membership- to send in their two dollars to replenish the treasury and to give it a new and vital start for the coming year.

A discussion, pro and con, in the matter of holding a football broadcast during the ArmyNavy Game was finally decided by the membership as impractical due to our regular meeting coming so close and the question as to whether or not a good turnout would be effected. For this reason it was decided to hold our regular meeting and cancel the football broadcast.

B. C. Lillis, one of our members, has been recalled to aaive duty as Communications Officer at the Navy Yard, Mare Island, and Harold Snow is on duty at the 12th Naval District. Bunny Cochrane writes from the Naval Academy that he also has been recalled to aaive duty and is teaching Navigation to the second classmen.

Commander W . H . McGrann announced under date of October 30th that the project of placing a bust of Admiral Sims in Memorial Hall of Bancroft Hall had been approved and that the collection of funds was in order.

Following the suggestion of Admiral Osterhaus, a letter was addressed to the Bureau of Navigation requesting a loan of sixteen millimeter motion picture films for use during our monthly meetings. T h e Bureau advises that all football pictures are made for the use of coaches and cannot be loaned by the Navy Department, but they may be applied for by addressin<; the Navy Athletic Association directly and the secretary is forwarding a letter so directed for the purpose of obtaining some football films. Other Navy motion pictures may be obtained by communicating with the Recruiting Officer of the 12th Naval District.

W e hope that within the next meeting or two we will have some good football pictures to show.

SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. Last Wednesday's luncheon was addressed

by Mr. Frank Fuller, the winner of the Bendix Air Race and a flyer who has had a world of experience. He told us not only of some of the problems involved in flying at various heights, but gave us considerable information regarding the possibilities of supercharged cabins and four engine ships, as well as many points to be worked out in coupling speed with gas consumption. H e was the guest of Mr. James Howell, Acting Chairman of our Entertainment Committee in the absence of Captain Ross Culp, and the talk was a treat well enjoyed.

The spirit of the meeting was further heightened by the knowledge of the Navy's victory. Following the game Commander Laird directed a telegram be sent on behalf of our Association to the team and its coach, and behind that telegram was a wealth of pride in the victory of those who represent us.

Elmer Langworthy who has recently come West spoke a few words regarding the New York Chapter as well as the one in Southern California and indicated his desire of attending as many of our luncheons as time and opportunity afford.

Richard McCullough has just returned from a trip East, and in going through Gallup, New Mexico interviewed Lieutenant H . K. Lyle, '16, who is doing well and receiving our bulletins regularly. W e also found that the Chief of Police of Gallup is an ex-boatswain's mate.

W e have in contemplation the showing of some football films which the Navy Athletic Association are going to loan us, and with a

sixteen millimeter projector we feel that everything is set.

Before closing Commander Laird requested that some thought be given to the 1940 dues, and the Secretary feels that as far as the treasury is concerned we can take a passage from Frank Fuller's address on flying and have it well applied as far as our exchequer is concerned—the ceiling is low and visibility poor.

W e listened to the national hook-up broadcast of the Army-Navy game, and the party got so well started and goodwill flowed so fluently, that many stayed to attend the Saturday evening dance. T h e orchestra played "Anchors Aweigh" for us and amid the clinking of champagne goblets, the party broke up at 2:30 a. m. It was a great game, a grear day, and those of the St. Louis area who missed the get-together really lost out on a very good time.

WASHINGTON, D. C. James L. Fly, '20, Chairman Federal Communications Commission, who has a distinguished record in government service gave a very interesting talk at the regular meeting held Friday, Dec. 15, at 8 P. M. at the ArmyNavy Club.

T h e telephone company showed some highly interesting movies illustrating broadcasting systems. This feature of the program we owe to Al Hopiak, ' 3 5 .

Refreshments were served and hit the spot.

Dick Stimson, the capable Secretary, and the Army-Navy Club made it a perfect score for the evening.
