1. Cars will be numbered. Tickets will be numbered. Only 70 seats will be sold for a specific car. (There are 80 seats in each coach.)

2. In order to prevent a rush for seats there will be a guard for each car at Penn Station who will pass on the tickets sold for that car, and only those holding tickets for each specific coach will be admitted to the car before leaving the station.

3. A porter has been engaged for each car

at Municipal Stadium one-half hour after game.

From Steam and Juice to Paper Making To the outsider, it is a far cry from naval engineering operations to a paper mill. Such, however, is not the case, and Robert F. (Bob) Nelson, '19, who graduated with his class June 1918, put his interviewer straight with an amused chuckle.

"You see," Bob said slowly—he hasn't lost much of his Georgia drawl in spite of the Yankee atmosphere—"running a paper mill is very much like running a bartleship. In both cases, the operation is continuous. We have to operate 24 hours a day or not at all. In this industry, we never think in terms of hours per day, our terms are days per week. The better the condition of our equipment, the more chance we have for a long and profitable run. This is exactly the same problem the engineering staff of the naval vessel faces. So you see, it is not a far cry from ships to paper making.

They are pretty much alike."

"Bob" is general manager of the Glassine Paper Company just outside the city of West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

His mill nestles in a valley that is both picturesque and historic, and in the nearby dwellings, obviously dating back to the days when Washington wintered his army in the nearby Valley Forge, the casual visitor finds much of interest. Like all paper mills, the Glassine plant has a natural water supply that is one of the smaller tributaries of the Schuylkill River.

cient to say that the art of printing, admittedly one of the greatest contributions to our modern civilizations, was dependent upon paper and thus, the art of paper making, however, simple it may appear, is important.

To modern living, the products of "Bob's" mill make their own equally important gifts, for Glassine products protect much of the food we eat today. To use his words, "where the cost of packaging must be held to a very small part of the total cost involved, we fit into the picture. Where protection and not 'dress' is of major importance, products such as ours are in demand."

Candy bars, food products and the like are sealed in airproof containers made from paper of rhe "Glassine" type. And if you think it is a small business, start counting the Baby Ruth candy bars at the ship's store. That is just one commodity.

The process of making the paper is essentially the same as that employed in any other paper mill except that the stock used and the finishing processes differ.

Finished paper is nearly as transparent as glass. This is converted from a pulp of about the consistency of oatmeal which {Continued on page 6)

Our Chief of Aeronautics

Rear Admiral John Henry Towers, the Navy's Number One aviator, recently appointed by the President as Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, paused in his daily duties to glance back on a hazardous career in the air, packed with breathtaking experiences, each one forming a rung in his ladder of famous aeronautical achievements. Seeing him in the normal surroundings of his office at the Navy Department in Washington, efficiently directing the business of the Navy's ever expanding air force, or in his pleasant home on the hill near the Naval Observatory, his lovely Frenchborn wife at his side, it is diffioilt to associate him with those adventurous early days of '"flying" in which he was a pioneer with the late Glenn Curtiss.

Jack Towers grew up with aviation, or more aptly, perhaps, naval aviation grew up with him, for he was the first of three officers in the Service to request flight duty.

What prompted him to become interested in flying? For back in 1908 the word "aviation" was not yet in existence.

"I was on a foreign cruise in the 'Kentucky' then, and read a press news item that the Wrights were demonstraring a flight to the Army at Fort Myer," he explained, his eyes twinkling at the recollection. "It occurred ro me rhat flying machines might be applicable in some way to the Navy, so I requested flight duty."

But at that time his idea was regarded as little short of fantastic and was considered so even two years later when he was serving in the "Michigan," for Towers was stiU anxious to fly. The Captain of the "Michigan," however, could not spare him. He was fire control officer and spotter. When the "Michigan" went on to win the Gunnery Trophy and Battle Efficiency Pennant, the Captain was proved correct. Lieutenant Towers was one of only three aboard to receive letters of commendation from the President and the Secretary of the

Navy for his efforts in helping to achieve an almost perfect score of 99.929. The other letters had gone to the Captain and Executive Officer.

"Sometime after tatget practice the mess gave me a farewell dinner. At last I had received my orders to flight duty."

But they were bent on poking fun at him. The menu card carried large black

letters at the top, which read: "To That Rising Young Aviator," and to rise at all in a "flying machine" in those days was StiU something of a feat.

In June, 1911, the Navy Department bought three planes—two of Curtiss and one of Wright design. They constituted the first "Naval Air Force." Towers and Lieutenant Ellyson, later gallantly to lose his life, trained with Glenn Curtiss at Hammondsport, New York, while the heroic but ill-fated John Rodgers was assigned to the Wright brothers.

"My first hop was to be what we called a 'grass hop,' " Admiral Towers continued. "I was just to sit in the plane and get used to it, driving it along the ground. Ellyson had done it and confidently assured me it would not fly. But he was 20 pounds heavier than I. My lighter weight proved all that was necessary. Soon I found myself a 'rising young aviator,' indeed, 30 feet above terra firma. But there was no time to be thrilled over my first hop. The plane immediately turned on its side and slid back to earth, crashing on one wing. All I had to show for my first efforts at the controls were a broken ankle and a lot of bruises. The other students were very annoyed with me because I had cracked

up the only plane we had and theirs was the job of rebuilding it while I languished in recuperation critically watching their efforts."

But nothing daunted—as soon as his ankle had sufficiently healed. Towers took his second flight in the same plane, now reconstructed. This time he had better luck.

In the autumn of 1911 Towers and Ellyson flew from Annapolis to Old Point Comfort, a distance of 145 miles, in 2 hours and 26 minutes. This remarkable feat was headlined in all the American newspapers. "But it took us a week to get back," he said ruefully. "We had engine trouble constantly, would break down and light on the waters of Chesapeake Bay. Eventually someone would tow us ashore and then we'd generally have to walk miles, trying to find a blacksmith shop. We made all the repairs ourselves, and ofren on such flights had to buy our own gasoline for lack of appropriations. One night, I remember, we stayed in a negro cabin. Its occupants had fled in panic to the woods at the terrifying unearthly sight and noise of our flying machine."

In the winter of 1912 Towers did most of Glenn Curtiss' experimental flying. Curtiss had stopped "rising off the ground" at the urgent and earnest request of Mrs. Curtiss. Late in that same year. Jack Towers made an endurance flight of six hours and ten minutes in a Curtiss seaplane. It was a world's record for seaplanes, and an American record for any kind of plane.

He was aided by an added gas tank, holding ten extra gallons, that he had built into the plane himself. At first it failed to function. The valve jammed.

Just in time he managed to free it by standing up and working over it, so every ounce of his precious gasoline became available.

The complicated instrument boards in use in modern planes were to come only after years of development. There were

no instruments then in flying machines.

"I carried an altimeter, but it was attached to a cord around my neck," he laughed.

Towers was the Navy's first aerial photographer, getting some splendid views of the Naval Academy, as a companion held the controls. These first aerial photographs are now part of an interesting collection that belongs in a museum. Jack Towers' scrap books are a pictorial history of aviation's swift advance. Shots of the initial catapult experiment in 1912 are faithfully recorded, the first time a plane ever took off with compressed air at its back. "But it ended disastrously as you can see," he remarked, pointing to a photograph of the sadly crumpled plane, nose down in the water.

Hospital at Annapolis, but not until he had insisted that they look diligently for Billingsley. After twenty minutes' search they could no longer take chances with his life, refused to listen to him and rushed him off to the hospital. Besides the broken ribs and torn ligaments, one kidney was ruptured, his liver was found to be torn loose from its moorings and there were other internal injuries. But he lived, the first man to fall 1700 feet in an airplane, remain conscious all the way down, and survive the ordeal. This accident led to the invention of the safety belt. To prove he had a charmed life, some years later he lived 11 days aboard a destroyer with a ruptured appendix before he could be gotten to an operating table.

On the 20th of June, 1913, occurred one of the most remarkable accidents in early aviation history. Lieutenant Towers and Ensign Billingsley were flying in a Wright seaplane over Chesapeake Bay. Billingsley, a Wright raised aviator, was at the controls when they hit a downward "pocket" at an altimde of 1700 feet. Both men were catapulted from their precariously flimsy seats on the wing. Billingsley was thrown clear and killed, joining the Valhalla of pioneer flyers, but Towers managed to grab a wing strut and hold on to the rapidly falling plane.

"We had run into a strong downtrend of air and the plane plunged forward on its nose, bucking like a broncho. I grabbed a strut and held on until about half way down, when the plane flipflopped onto its back. My hand slid up the strut to its top. The jerk broke two of my ribs and tore the ligaments of my shoulder. But I held on and hit the water firsr, the plane falling on top of me.

Part of the pontoon floated, but I hung on and managed to tie my wrist to a keel iron of the pontoon with a handkerchief. Then I forgot to remember."

Towers was picked up 45 minutes later by some enlisted men in a boat.

His own bull terrier, who liked boatriding, was wirh them and began to bark frantically, leading the men to the rescue.

Somehow they got Towers to the Naval

In 1913 Towers flew for the movies, "doubling" as it was called then, for one of the actors. "But I didn't get paid for it," he chuckled.

By 1914 the Navy boasted 8 planes and Towers was in command of the aviation unit on shore at the occupation of Vera Cruz.

Always being a firm believer in long distance flights, since his memorable record, he succeeded in getting ordered back to Hammondsport, New York, where Glenn Curtiss named him as the American pilot representative in an attempt to fly to Europe. His companion was to be an English flyer and Rodman Wanamaker was the sponsor of that venture. But war came and the plan had to be abandoned. Instead, he was ordered to Europe as an aviation observer being attached to the London Embassy. In 1916 he returned to Washington and assumed charge of aviation under Naval Operations.

After the war, still convinced of the practicability of flying to Europe, he was ordered to command the famous NC-1, 2, 3 and 4 division that was to make the first trans-Atlantic flight in the history of the world via the Azores and Lisbon to Plymouth from Trepassey, Newfoundland. Preparations were full of anxieties and setbacks, but finally the flight began on May 16, 1919- Only three "ships", the NC-1, 3 and 4, started

on the famous first hop.

"The NC-2 was the "dog' plane," Admiral Towers explained. "We had done all our experimenting with her and used her for test flights and spare parts."

The luckier NC-4, under Commander Reed, thrilled the entire world by getting through to Ponta del Gada and thence to Lisbon and Plymouth, but the NC-3 with Towers had been forced down to take radio bearings on the destroyers stationed 50 miles apart along the route.

The NC-1 suffered a similar experience.

Rough seas and a gale that later reached the velocity of 71 miles an hour at its height kept the NC-3 from getting off the water. The crew of the NC-1 were fortunately picked up almost immediately after landing by a Greek steamer which saved their lives as she was rapidly breaking up in the storm.

"So we sailed the NC-3 with various objects for sea anchors 205 miles to Ponta del Gada. First we used a regular fabric sea anchor—it carried away; next we used a bucket and finally strips of fabric from the wings which incidentally was the best sea anchor of the lot. It took us 62 V^ hoiurs, but at times running before the gale we made the remarkable speed of 15 miles an hour. We couldn't use our engines for fear of cracking up, and, of course, our radio gear was gone and most everything else was swept away. But we did do some pretty good navigating and I had a sextant, getting some sights through rifts in the clouds. We lost our wing tip pontoons and the wings themselves took an awful beating."

The damaged plane sailed safely into Ponta del Gada to everyone's surprise.

Captain Towers was decorated by the British and Portugese Governments for his supreme effort and received a special medal from Congress. Only six of these were issued for the combined crews of the NC boats.

Throughout his career John Henry Towers has not only been the foremost aviator in the Navy, but has been the greatest moving spirit in the scientific advance of naval aviation both afloat {Continued on page 6)

Graeme (Red) Bannerman, '18, the Skipper of the CANOPUS, writes us from China — "I am one of those forgetful souls that you, in doing a fine job of editing SHIPMATE, are having to prod in the columns. Even when I wrote you that letter—a long time since—it never occurred to me that a U. S. dollar was a necessary means of exchange. As you know the dollars in North China are practically a dime a dozen, so that some of the gals figure that they are losing if they are not spendin it. I am not quite so logical, but undoubtedly, more Scottish. At any rate two U. S. dollars are enclosed herewith.

LET'S GO NAVY!

Notre Dame 14 — Navy 7 Notre Dame's leading power-house football team did not have too much trouble in handing Navy its first, and we hope only, defeat of the current football season at Cleveland's vast stadium on Saturday, October 21st. A capacity throng of 80,000 howling fans saw the game and got their money's worth.

Those who saw the game marveled at the great power in the Irish backfield.

They are big, as fleet as deer and as powerful as elephants. WTiile they were the better ball club. Navy acquitted themselves in great style.

Navy's one touchdown was sweet. It came in the fourth period on a beautiful pass to Whitehead. Just before Navy had held the Irish for downs. Leonard passed to Foster for 17 yards on Navy's 36. On the next play Leonard faded far back to his own 25 and rifled a pass down the field. Whitehead had gotten beyond Notre Dame's defense. The pass came true to Monty who gathered the ball in on the dead run and raced over the goal to score standing up. He then kicked the placement and the score was Navy 7, Notre Dame 14.

Notre Dame scored in the second and third quarters. The first score came on the first play of the second quarter. Sheridan, one of Notre Dame's many great backs, weaved his way around Navy's right end and down the middle for 26 yards and the score. Kelleher's kick was good.

Then in the third quarter, Notre Dame got the ball on their own 35. The Irish put on a 65 yard drive for the score, Zontini, Stevenson and Peipul doing the work. Zontini converted to make the score 14 to 0.

Plebes Swamp Kisld The great Plebe football team remained undefeated, turning in a fine allaround performance on Saturday, Oct. 21 against Kiskiminetas Springs School eleven, the final score being 38-0. Kiskiminetas comes from a suburb of Pittsburgh and has a record of turning out great football players. But, beyond the first quarter, they were no match in any way for the Plebes.

Practically every member of the Plebe squad saw service in the game.

Army Harriers Beat Navy Army's strong cross country team won both the individual and team honors in the Annual meet in which the Cadets, SHIPMATE

Princeton, Columbia and Navy met in Van Cortland Park, New York City, on Saturday, October 28th.

Cadets Moore and Vanderhoef finished in a dead heat for first place for Army in 20—10.4. They also placed five scores in the first 12 for team honors with a total of 30.

Navy finished second with 38; Princeton took third place with a 52, and Columbia fourth with 90.

Plebes Down Bordentown 16-7 Continuing their march toward an undefeated season, the powerful Plebe eleven defeated Bordentown Military Institute on Saturday, Nov. 4th, by 16-7.

After a scoreless first quarter, a Bordentown kick from their goal line was blocked. Donaldson, Navy, fell on it for a safety. After the kick-off, the plebes got going. In three running plays they went to Bordentown's 45. Busick then passed to Bill Maxson for a touchdown.

Vimcci kicked the extra point.

In the fourth quarter, the Plebes, with Busick and Ploszay carrying the ball, went to Bordentown's 20. Zechella on a double reverse scored. Again Vitucci converted and the score was 16-0 in their favor.

Bordentown then opened up a passing attack which clicked. With the ball on the Plebe 20, Reiges passed to Haydn for the score. Reiges then converted.

Penn 13—Navy G A highly favored Penn Team defeated Navy at Franklin Field before a nearcapacity excited crowd of 70,000 on Saturday, November 4th.

The winning play came in the third period when Frank Reagan threw a perfect pass to Gene Davis who ran 32 yards DECEMBER,

for the score. Bob Stephens made Davis' run possible by a perfect block of Navy's last defender.

Otherwise, the teams battled on even terms. Navy's fight matching Penn's speed.

Penn scored in the second and third quarters; Navy's score came in the 4th quarter when Tommy Blount, who recently came up from the B Squad, passed to Dick Foster on 4th down, Dick catching the ball in the end zone for the score.

Mayo's drop-kick fell short for the extra point.

In the first quarter, both teams depended on power plays, neither team uncovering a passing attack.

The first score came late in the second quarter when Bob Leonard's attempted forward pass was intercepted by Reagan near midfield. Reagan ran the ball back to Navy's 43 when he was brought down on a hard tackle, so hard in fact that he fumbled. In the mad scramble Stephens recovered the ball.

His first pass was from Navy's 29 to Everett Malcolm and it carried the ball to Penn's 20. Malcolm took the pass around Navy's 43 and ran 37 yards to Penn's 20 before he was stopped.

Clemson won the toss and elected to defend the North goal with a strong breeze at their backs. Navy elected to receive and the game was on.

Navy reeled off a couple of first downs right at the start but then the going got heavy and Navy had to kick. Maness' punt, with the aid of strong wind, sailed over Leonard's head. He ran back to get the ball and, after fumbling, fell on it on his 6 yard line. Navy lined up to punt.

Whitehead missed the pass from center and the ball bounded around in the end zone as he tried frantically to recover it.

He was trapped. He tried desperately to throw a forward pass to the playing field and thus have second down even if the

pass was incomplete but it landed in the end zone and Clemson had scored a safety.

Na'vy came out to start the second half a determined, fighting team. After they had forced a Clemson punt with the wind against them Na-vy got possession of the ball on the Tiger 36. With Rowse and Leonard carrying the ball they managed to reach Clemson's 11 before they were forced to give up the ball.

Later in the period Cox intercepted one of Leonards passes and returned the ball to Navy's 44.

Navy Drops Fourth in Row Striking thrice through the air, Columbia's football team overtook Na-vy to hand the Midshipmen their fourth successive defeat on Saturday, November 11th, at the Naval Academy.

The score was Columbia 19, Navy 13.

The Lions' scores came on passes, one in each of the last three quarters. Na-vy's scores came in the first and second quarters.

Credit must be given to Columbia's Naylor and Stanczyk,—and the Columbia Team. Naylor threw 4 out of 5 passes, two going for touchdowns. Stanczyk tossed one and it went for a touchdown.

Navy, on the other hand, had superior power. They missed 5 scoring chances in which they had the ball within Columbia's 40-yard line—two were due to fumbles; twice the attack bogged down; once Columbia held for downs.

Navy scored first. Navy kicked off and, on third down, Columbia was forced to kick against the wind—a poor punt which wobbled out on their 28.

The Lions stopped the first attack but Navy came roaring back. With the ball on Columbia's 18, Tommy Blount let fly a fourth-down pass to Sammy Boothe, putting the ball on Columbia's 4. Two Navy fumbles which they recovered, yet they cost downs, and Columbia forced the ball to be surrendered on their 1-yard line.

Naylor's punt went out on the Lion 18. On the next play, Boothe slid off left tackle on a reverse from Whitehead for the score—Whitehead's kick was low.

Early in the second quarter. Suavely intercepted Blount's pass deep in Navy territory. On first down, Stanczyk flipped a pass to Stulgaitis who twisted clear and streaked 25 yards to score. Will placekicked the extra point.

for Navy at midfield. Battering the tackles. Navy took the ball to the Lions' 10. On fourth down, Blount passed to Gillette for 7 yards and a first down on Colvtmbia's 3. Whitehead slammed through tackle on the next play for the score. Leonard was rushed into the game and placekicked the extra point to put Navy in the lead 13-7.

The half ended shortly afterwards.

In the third quarter, Columbia tied the ball game up when Naylor passed to Wood for a touchdown. WiU missed the placement and the score was tied.

Then came the final air attack.

Taking the ball on their 19-yard line, Columbia, in three plays, scored. Naylor shook loose on a line play and did a fancy piece of spinning and dodging.

When he was stopped he was on Na-vy's 38. Naylor's pass was incomplete by inches. Then, he heaved another to De Augustinis, who had eluded the Navy defense man covering him, which he took on Navy's 2 and scored sranding up. The placement was wide but the score stood 19-13 against Na-vy. * N o football game is scheduled for Navy until the Princeton game at Princeton on November 25 th, because of the Bi-Monthly examinations at the Naval Academy.

Penn State *B' Ties Navy 3 ' , 6-6 Darkness was fast falling and the floodlights had been turned on when Penn State's clever 'B' football team, trailing by a 6-0 score, struck through the air to score and tie up the old ball game.

It all took place the "late" afternoon of Friday, Nov. 10th, at the Naval Academy.

All the faithful were there.

The Navy "B' Team struck early in the game—the first quarter—when Bob O'Donnell, right end, blocked a Penn State punt and Navy recovered on Penn State's 8-yard line. From there Navy smashed through the line for the score.

The game then see-sawed up and down the field. State managed to get to the Navy 4 in the second period but were thrown back. Late in the last quarter it looked like Navy would score when a lateral pass was good for 40 yards and the ball was deep in State's territory. But, State held.

After due deliberation, Mr. Sadler appointed a committee comprising Admiral Nimitz, '05; Capt. Bryson Bruce, '07, and Edwin F. Cochrane, '16, to study the resolution and make recommendations to the trustees at the next trustees meeting.

The proposed amendment to the Constitution to change the term of office of the officers of the association from one t o two or three years, as submitted by the DECEMBER,

Philadelphia and Boston Branches, was considered. The President was authorized to appoint a committee to study this proposed change and submit their recommendations at the next trustees meeting.

The committee on the adoption of a button for the members of the association presented a sample button which met with the unqualified approval and pleasure of the trustees and the committee was directed to negotiate the necessary contract, etc., at an early date.

It is a small, conventional button with the Naval Academy seal, in gold, mounted on an enameled navy blue background circled in gold. For a 10-K button, the price will be around one dollar.

Mr. Van Brandt, '11, chairman of that committee, and his aides, hope to have a contract completed by December 1st at the latest.

Those desiring buttons may write to the Secretary-Treasurer who will gladly advise you when the buttons are ready, etc. The January issue of SHIPMATE will also carry all the dope on the button and rosette.

The date of the next trustees meeting was not set.

That night a number of the officers and trustees and their wives artended the dinner-dance given by the Washington Branch for Mr. Sadler.

H. McCoy Jones, President of the Washington Branch, and his committee out did themselves in making the parry highly enjoyable. Vince Gallagher's entertainment was greatly enjoyed as his shows always are. The dinner prepared by the famous Army-Navy Counrry Club, was up to their usual high standard.

That he did this alone marks him a man of no mean ability. His telling of the story of the voyage is an epic worth reading—one that will make you stay up long past your regular time to retire, standing the lonely watch with him, knowing that if you go to sleep, the winds may carry you off your course.

But as the name implies, this narrative of the "home made" sailor is a story of his own escape from the bitter realities of life—an escape in which his mental growth passes through the bleakness of skepticism and disappointment into the more gratifying sphere of resolution and belief. Richard Hughes, who writes the introduaion, has called this a spiritual odessy. As such, it will attract many readers. Yet, as a story of the cruise of a tiny sailboat across the Pacific, it is intensely interesting and worth reading.

Maybe you'll darned near tear the seats up just as we did, for Wallace Beery and Chester Morris make an interesting hour and twenty minutes for anyone.

Alex Hudson spins another submarine story for Saturday Evening Post called "Battle Stations." Maybe you read his last one about a Chinese submarine. This time, Alex, as engineering officer of an American submarine takes you down to the bottom and from there, you disembark, via the Momson lung. "Battle Stations" is timely. Hope you caught it. Good reading. "Alex Hudson," by the way, is a pseudonym for one of our gang. His real name is withheld by the publishers.

DETROIT, MICH. Many of the Naval Academy Michiganders were on hand at Cleveland for the NavyNotre Dame Game. We saw a good clean game and it was the unanimous feeling that we can be proud of the team and its coaching staff. Before the final whistle was blown we were all scheming in our minds how we could bring that game back to Cleveland next year and make it an annual affair. Many of us were impressed with the lack of reserve material on the squad, and we returned to Michigan with the determination that next year and in the future Michigan is going to furnish its share of material for "Swede" and his staff to work on.

The City of Detroit put on a splendid Navy Day program. We were fortunate to have as the speaker of the day Raymond J. Kelley, Commander of the American Legion.

In no uncertain terms he made it clear that the American Legion and the City of Detroit were for the Navy one hundred per cent.

The next meeting of the Naval Academy Association of Michigan will be held the night of November 17 in the Ward Room of the Naval Armory in Detroit. It will be a dinner meeting and we would be very happy to have out-of-town visitors attend our meeting.

MILWAUKEE, WIS. Fred L. Caudle, '23, Meteorologist at the Milwaukee County Airport and a member of the faculty of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, addressed the members of the Milwaukee Chapter of the USNA Alumni Association at the November meeting. His subject was an advanced lesson in "skinny" in relarion to charting weather observation for use by airlines. An interesting problem in lighter-than-air navigation was explained.

Fred was assisted by Floyd Tamblingson, at the controls of the projector.

The Milwaukee Chapter was pleased to welcome Victor Johnson, '25, a leading realtor in Racine, Wisconsin. Chas. P. Smith, '28, of the sales department of the Wadhams Oil Company, was with us after several absences.

Henry Banzhaf, '33, the Chapter's representative on the Milwaukee Committee for civilian observance of Navy Day, made his report. Action was deferred, as to what part the Milwaukee Chapter would take in next year's program.

Commander S. C. Norton, '18, addressed an open meeting of ex-Navy men at the Alonzo Cudworth Post of the American Legion on the evening of Oaober 19. Several sound track films were shown, following Commander Norton's splendid talk.

Commander Norton is instructor of the Wisconsin area of the Naval Reserve.

The Milwaukee Chapter of the Association is meeting regularly with former West Pointers now located in the vicinity of this brewery city. We are most happy to have with us Lieut. Col. W. F. Lieut. Comdr. F. R. Stolz appears to have put the Milwaukee Business Men's sketch class on a paying basis with an original lottery scheme he devised.

Frank Donohue, '26, of the Allis-Chalmers Co., soared into Fred Caudle's stratosphere with eloquence and history as "she were never writ." Or was it? Who are we toiling slaves of commerce to argue? And what kind of a business is this Allis-Chalmers that needs such power of persuasion?

Byron Hough, '15, the treasurer, will now have definite financial duties. It is rumored that about $1.65 has been amassed in the treasury.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. At our recent meeting, November 1st, thirty-three members gathered about the table. Among them was Captain Davis and Commander Irwin who fifteen months ago was severely injured and this is the first meeting for him to attend in that time. We were all very happy to welcome him back.

The speaker was Charlie Chapel, ex-class of '26 and a retired Marine Corps officer.

Charlie spoke on the proposed Nicaragua Canal and its relation to National Defense.

He possessed an obviously accurate and comprehensive knowledge of his subject, and the presentation of the entire subjea was entertaining and instruaive.

As previously announced, proposed changes in our name and by-laws were submitted to a vote and as a result we have unanimously changed the name of our Association to read "Naval Academy Alumni Association of San Francisco" so as to conform to the name of the parent body. Our by-laws have also been changed so as to allow the President to be ex-officio Chairman of the Executive Committee; and also to allow the President to designate the chairmen of such standing committees as he may deem necessary, such chairmen and committees to serve during the term of office of the President who appoints them.

After considerable discussion it was decided not to hold a football broadcast meeting this year by reason of the faa that the regular meeting and the proposed broadcast meeting would come so close together that a good attendance at one or the other might not be obtained. It was also proposed by Admiral Osterhaus, and the Secretary was instruaed, to communicate with the Navy Department to the end that we secure if possible from the Department a loan of some sixteen millimeter moving picture films of

recent football games so that we may exhibit these pictures at some of our coming meetings. We trust to be fortunate enough to be given this privilege.

Recently our local Association voted $50.00 toward a bust of the late Admiral Sims which will be installed in Bancroft Hall.

The undersigned is just in receipt of a letter from Commander W. H. McGrann, informing him that the projea has advanced so far that the Committee on Memorials at the United States Naval Academy has formally approved the installation of the bust and that the forwarding of the contribution is in order.

B. P. Lillis, one of our members, has recently been recalled to aaive duty and is now Yard Communications Officer at Mare Island. We hope that he will find the time to drop down at least occasionally and attend a meeting.

During the temporary absence of Captain Culp, Jimmie Howell is carrying on as Chairman of the Entertainment Committee and we look to Jimmie to produce an interesting speaker with an interesting subjea on December 6th.

Before closing, attention is invited to one year which is near its close and another one about to commence. It was heartening lasr Wednesday to find four or five members paying their dues for 1940, and with this bulletin goes a request that our membership please take notice and send their $2.00 as soon as possible to the Secretary so that 1940 can begin securely with a good start in replenishing our diminished treasury.
