ADVENTURES IN HOSPITALITY THE BUILDING OF SHINTA MANI WILD

JASON M.FRIEDMAN -January 2024

The year was 2015, when Bill Bensley and Sokoun Chanpreda, two men of vision, invited me to become a part of an extraordinary journey. Our shared history, dating back to the creation of the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand, fortified our camaraderie. The challenge this time was grander - the creation of Shinta Mani Wild in the remote heart of Cambodia’s Cardamom Forest.

Our canvas was an expansive 800-acres, the size and shape of New York City’s Central Park, a logging concession won at a government land auction. Our intent, however, was not to exploit but to foster. We envisioned a sanctuary, a private nature reserve with a luxury resort nestled within it.

Our initial task was to understand this wild terrain. Each visit to the site was nothing short of a discovery. The jungle was so dense that the riverbed became our pathway, the only means to explore potential spots for our luxury tents. We found two local villagers to help us navigate through this wild maze. Armed with machetes, they carved out a path for us, later becoming stalwarts of the Shinta Mani Wild team. Their growth is a testament to the positive impact our resort has had on this remote community.

Understanding the tumultuous temperament of the Tmor Rung river was crucial. Its untamed flow fluctuated wildly with the rain, demanding strategic positioning of our tents to prevent succumbing to annual floods. A year of observation and wisdom from village elders helped us understand the river’s whims and cater to it.

Our numerous visits to the region were not just about scouting the location or staff village. They were about absorbing the culture, understanding the regional nuances, and discovering what we could offer our guests. Our experiences shaped the essence of Shinta Mani Wild.

With this wealth of local knowledge, we embarked on the design phase. Bensley’s holistic approach to design is unique. He sought to harmonize the hotel with the regional features and the offerings for guests inside and outside the hotel. It was a time-consuming process, yet the result was a hotel that fits seamlessly with its surroundings.

Construction was a mammoth task. Building a luxury tented camp, a staff village for a hundred, and infrastructure, all without disturbing the natural environment was a daunting endeavor. Every piece of material was transported to the site by hand or oxcart, preserving the sanctity of the forest. The result was a camp that appears to have existed since time immemorial, providing guests with a feeling of timelessness.

Thus, Shinta Mani Wild came to be. An adventure in hospitality that was as much about learning, understanding, and adapting, as it was about creating. An embodiment of our collective spirit and the wild spirit of the Cardamom Forest. A testament of our journey in the wild, a journey that transformed us, just as much as we transformed the wild.

THE FOREVER CHANGING BEAUTY OF SHINTA MANI WILD

ASthe seasons gracefully transition from green and lush to warm and dry, Shinta Mani Wild reveals its everchanging beauty. The vibrant colors soften, while the gentle breeze and rhythmic dance of the surrounding forest carry the seasonal white migrating butterflies down the river. It is a time of transformation, as the forest and rivers slowly dry out, revealing breath-taking pools and smaller waterfalls.

This natural dynamic adds a new dimension to our interactions with the river, inviting you to swim and frolic in its idle pools, or simply enjoy a leisurely picnic at the riverside. It also allows us to embark on captivating adventures deeper into the forest, where hidden waterfalls and invigorating hiking trails await. Our knowledgeable butlers will guide you on journeys of exploration, allowing you to connect with nature in a way that is both meaningful and profound.

At Shinta Mani Wild, our commitment to creating a haven for the remarkable wildlife that call the Cardamom Forest home remains unwavering. In fact, we are ramping up our efforts with the addition of 5 new rangers to the Shinta Mani Ranger Station, expanding our defence against poachers in the forest. We continue to diligently work to remove snares daily, having already eliminated 14,700 snares with your help. Our aim is to protect and preserve the environment and its inhabitants, with the hope of one day providing space for the reintroduction of confiscated animals from our anti-poaching patrols.

As we further our commitment to conservation, we are delighted to announce that Shinta Mani Wild has joined The Long Run Organization. This organization comprises a group of sustainable properties at the forefront of conservation in remote places around the world. By joining The Long Run, we have aligned ourselves with pioneers in sustainability, dedicated to doing things differently and leveraging the power of our business for the health of the planet and the well-being of people. This membership connects us to a global community of exceptional destinations, where we support and inspire each other to expand positive impact and exceed the highest standards of sustainability.

Additionally, we are thrilled to introduce the opening of a new boutique at Shinta Mani Wild. In partnership with Julilyn Designs, we proudly present a stunning collection of custom jewellery inspired by the Cardamom jungles. These exclusive designs perfectly capture the essence of our surroundings, offering you a unique memento to cherish time spent in the wilderness.

We cannot wait for you to join us at Shinta Mani Wild, as we embrace the changing seasons and celebrate the beauty of nature. Allow us to guide you on an extraordinary journey where luxury and conservation intertwine, and where every precious moment spent with us makes a difference.

ASwe wrapped up 2023, we took a moment to look back at the achievements we’ve made together and look ahead to the exciting prospects of 2024. Your continued support has enabled us to touch the lives of many in need, and for that, we are grateful.

In October 2023, we celebrated the graduation of 27 students from our Hospitality Training School. All of them have found decent jobs - a testament to the hard work of our dedicated team and the students’ determination. Our first alumni meeting party was a heartening occasion, with 165/324 alumni sharing their inspiring success stories.

December saw the successful launch of the Bensley Gallery in Siem Reap. We are overwhelmed to announce that the event raised $40k for the foundation through the sale of Bill’s artwork.

Between August and October, we were able to construct 26 homes for underprivileged families, a significant step towards providing better living conditions for those in need.

In partnership with Global Dental Relief and HUSK Cambodia, 16 American dentists visited Siem Reap in November, treating 595 young patients aged 7-17. This initiative has provided them with essential dental care and education on oral hygiene.

As we ushered in 2024, we welcomed 33 students to our Hospitality Training School. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of individual sponsors, foundations, and community grants. Together, we’re helping these young minds escape poverty and build a promising future.

Looking ahead to 2024, we are excited to share our upcoming projects. We plan to build 30 houses and donate 15 toilets in early February. With the growing need for clean drinking water in rural areas, we will distribute 100 water filters to families in need.

Understanding the importance of education and the challenges rural children face in commuting to school, we will donate 100 bicycles to students in need in March.

As we embark on these new projects, we remain steadfast in our commitment to improving lives and creating lasting change.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to sharing more success stories with you in 2024.

Warm Regards, The Shinta Mani Foundation Family
