TEZEN MUSEUM 手錢記念館

WINDOW ON THE RICH CRAFTS OF SHIMANE

The Tezen Museum in Izumo Shimane has a long tradition of highquality craftwork, including ceramics and lacquerware. A great place to learn about these traditional local crafts is the Tezen Museum in Izumo.

Located a short walk from Izumo Taisha, the museum preserves a treasure trove of art and crafts passed down over generations in an important local household. The Tezen family were once grain merchants who also ran a sake brewery that produced the sacramental rice wine used at Izumo Taisha. Heads of the family served as local elders as well as stewards of the official inns reserved for high-ranking visitors to the shrine.

島根には陶磁器や漆器など、長い 歴史を持つ良質の伝統工芸品があ ります。その歴史を学ぶのに最適な 美術館が、出雲市にある手錢記念 館 （ 以 下 、記 念 館 ） で す 。 記念 館は出雲大社から徒歩で行ける場 所にあり、地域の旧家である手錢 家に代々受け継がれてきた貴重な 美術品や伝統工芸品を保存、管 理してきました。元々は雑穀商だっ た手錢家は、のちに造り酒屋も始 め、出雲大社に納める御神酒も造 っていました。手錢家の当主は、出 雲大社を訪れる位の高い人物（藩 主や藩士、その家族）のための御 用宿（ごようやど）の主人や、地域 のまとめ役である大年寄（おおどし より） も務 め まし た 。

Shimane tem uma longa tradição de artesanato de alta qualidade, incluindo cerâmica e laca. Um ótimo lugar para aprender sobre esse artesanato tradicional local é o Museu Tezen em Izumo. Localizado a uma curta caminhada de Izumo Taisha, o museu preserva um tesouro de arte e artesanato transmitido de geração em geração em uma importante casa local. A família Tezen já foi negociante de grãos que também administrava uma cervejaria de saquê que produzia o vinho sacramental de arroz usado em Izumo Taisha. Thanks to such high connections, over the years the family came into possession of a number of particularly fine artworks, including paintings

by Yusei Horie (1802-1873), one of the most celebrated artists of Shimane. These and other treasures go on display in rotation in the first gallery near the museum entrance, a converted rice storehouse, part of special exhibitions that change several times a year.

The sake brewery was converted into the second and larger gallery, which houses a permanent exhibition of traditional crafts of the Izumo region. Many of the pieces date from an artistic renaissance that took place under Harusato Matsudaira (1751-1818), the seventh daimyo of the Matsue clan, who in Shimane is usually referred to by his tea name, Fumai-kō. An enlightened leader who worked hard to improve the lives of his subjects, he was also a great patron of the arts.

Graças a essas ligações, ao longo dos anos a família passou a possuir várias obras de arte particularmente belas, incluindo pinturas de Yusei Horie (1802-1873), um dos artistas mais célebres de Shimane. A cervejaria de saquê foi convertida na segunda e maior galeria, que abriga uma exposição permanente de artesanato tradicional da região de Izumo. Muitas das peças datam de um renascimento artístico ocorrido sob Harusato Matsudaira (1751-1818), o sétimo daimyo do clã Matsue, que em Shimane costuma ser referido pelo nome do chá, Fumai-kō.

But visitors to the museum can take in beautiful examples of both styles, as well as Izumo’s local lacquerware. Don’t miss the three-tiered confection box with intricate maki-e decoration in gold and silver. The brushwork on the elegant tied-cord design is so fine that one can distinguish even the individual threads of the tassels.

The second gallery also displays several hundred articles for everyday use that date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Standouts include a bridal trousseau brought by a woman who married into the family in 1890, including an assortment of intricate silver hairpins designed so individual ornaments can be affixed to the end.

The most charming of these baubles is a miniature copy of the pulleysystem seen over wells, complete with tiny buckets that move up and down on a chain. Most exhibits are captioned only in Japanese, so look for the binder, placed on a bench, that provides explanation in English.

Visitors are also advised to dress for the season as the gallery has neither heat nor air-conditioning and can be chilly in the winter and warm in the summer.

With Valentines Day quickly approaching, we were on the lookout for some places to buy unique chocolate and sweets for those you love. Below our some of our suggestions that will add a little something extra to your Valentine’s Day giving. And guys, don’t forget White Day is just around the corner as well.

PAYS NATAL

MATSUE

Fifteen minutes walk (1 km) from Matsue Castle, Pays Natal has a variety of confectionary, from cakes and choux croquant to macaroons and bûche. They also offer a variety of chocolates, all made inhouse and offer a special Valentine’s box perfect for that special someone, some of which are praline chocolates made with their almonds freshly ground from their kitchen. If the person you are buying for isn’t a fan of chocolates, they also carry a wide variety of other small sweets like arlettes, sautnon and almond covered doigts.

If you’re up for some fresh air and a scenic mountain drive, head out to Milk and Beans Mui in Onanchou. As the name implies, the theme here is milk, cacao, cocoa, and coffee. They offer a variety of unique products including high quality chocolate intended for making your own sweets, milk jams (yes jam made of milk), icecream, and my personal favorite, Ushinofun (Cow Poop); a delightful and fluffy cookie-type confection perfect for that special someone with a sense of humor.

Near the top of the shopping district leading up to Taisha Shrine, fifty meters off the main road, is the small but fashionable chocolatier, Okinogami Blue Cacao’s, which offers a wide variety of your favorite chocolate products all made from carefully selected beans from around the world. Some of the highlights include unique items like cacao milk, blue chocolate, white chocolate with Ghanaian roasted cacao nibs, baked white chocolate, and locally sourced Izumo matcha chocolate and a full range of dark chocolates.

Nestled amongst the green farming fields of Hikawa sits the artistic gallery of La Chocolaterie Nanairo a very contemporary and stylish chocolate workshop and café offering inspired sweets using an ancient method of production that ends with an additive-free work of craftsmanship. Using Fairtrade products, the owner of Nanairo creates chocolate in small, numbered batches which means that each batch is unique and never available again and seasonal themes that are made from different cacao production areas from around the world. I’d like to introduce you to Hajime Wilds. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to Taki, Izumo as a child, Hajime grew up as the rest of the country boys in the Tagi, Taki area. However, watching his father working for himself as a sculptor and his mother work as a child`s book illustrator helped him decide that he too did not want to work for others but for himself, he just wasn`t sure what that would be. Then in jr high school he realized that working with wood was something he enjoyed and he was good at doing.

そんなあなたへ、ワイルズはじめさんを紹 介します。はじめさんはアメリカミネソタ州 のミネアポリスで生まれ、子どものころに 出雲市多伎町に移り住み、少年時代 を出雲市多伎町の田儀近辺で過ごし ました。彫刻家の父と、絵本のイラストレ ーターの母が働く姿を見て育ったはじめ さんは、誰かに仕えるような仕事ではな く、自分も何かを産み出す仕事をしたい と思うようになりましたが、何をしたらよい か、分からずにいました。中学のとき、自 分は木工することが好きで、得意である と気が付きました。

First designing and making furniture pieces as seen in the pictures he has grown to designing and building rooms along with restoration of traditional Japanese homes.

He is currently studying architecture in hopes of designing even more.
