11 Interesting Facts about Medjool Dates and Other Varieties The small brown date fruit, which has been cultivated for over the past 5,000 years, is a super food. Despite high levels of fructose, dates don’t have a high glycemic index. Medjool dates are packed with fibres and various vitamins, and minerals like iron, potassium and calcium, and help in lowering cholesterol and improving digestion, among many other benefits. While these are facts known to many, here are some interesting facts about dates that you did not know about: 1. Dates can be stored for months together. Their high sugar and low water content increases their shelf life. 2. If seeds of the date palm tree do not receive sufficient water and light, they can be dormant or inactive for several years. 3. It is believed that in the Garden of Eden, the fruit was actually a date and not an apple. 4. During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims break their fast with dates. 5. There are about 200 varieties of dates available today like Ajwa dates, Medjool dates and Khidri dates.
