Shildon vs Seaham Red Star Match Preview
by Adam Gill
The Railwaymen welcome Seaham Red Star to Dean Street on Tuesday, looking to get back to winning ways after a 2-1 defeat away to North Shields.
Shildon have had a mixed start to the campaign, picking up seven points from a possible 15 following Saturday’s result.
Tuesday night’s visitors Seaham, who have played a game more than Shildon, sit 14th in the league after picking up five points from their first six games. Seaham visit Dean Street off the back of an 2-0 away win against Bishop Auckland, so they will be looking to Tuesday’s as the start of a winning run.
Ahead of a busy October month for Shildon, where they play seven league games and a FA Vase Qualifying round, the home side will be in the search to create some momentum by picking up three points.
Billy Greulich-Smith remains out of tomorrow’s clash, whilst Jordan Lavery serves the last game of his three match ban. Matty Robson is expected to return to the squad.
SHILDON AFC - HISTORY FORMED in 1890 as Shildon Town, the Railwaymen joined the Auckland and District League two years later and in 1894 merged with the Rangers and Heroes to become Shildon United. In 1900, the club played in the new Northern League Division Two but folded that season due to financial problems – as did the Second Division. A re-formed club joined the Northern League in 1903 to replace Stockton St John’s. In 1907, Shildon joined the semi-professional ranks of the North Eastern League, finishing second in season 1932/33. Before WWII the club won four successive Northern League Division One titles; a record that stood until overhauled by Blyth in 1984. In 1937 the team was unbeaten on their march to the title with Jack Downing firing in a record 61 league and cup goals. A replay win at York City in 1927/28 saw the club reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. In the first round they have also played Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United and Oldham Athletic three times. The last time the club reached the first round was in 2003/04, losing out 7-2 against Notts County. The club also reached the second round, in 1936/37 against Dartford. The Dean Street turnstiles and distinctive grandstand were erected in 1923.A £45,000 grant saw new dressing rooms and a social club built beneath the stand 60 years later. Shildon won the Second Division championship in 2001/02, scoring 135 goals and finished runners-up in two cup competitions. The following season they won the Northern League Challenge Cup with a 3-2 golden goal victory over Billingham Synthonia at Feethams. Tragedy struck the club in February 2004 when 26-year-old player, Lee Hainsworth was killed in a road accident on his way to training. He had been with the club for six years. The Brown Street stand was renamed in his memory. Bill Aisbitt, a lifelong stalwart at the club, died in June 2003 and the boardroom was named in his honour after over 50 years loyal service. At the end of the 2004 season, the Railwaymen came under serious threat through financial difficulties when the former chairman severed all ties with the club.At the end of the season all the players and the
manager left the club, leaving it crippled. But during the close season, the club appointed a new chairman, Brian Burn who ensured its survival. The club survived a relegation scare and since then has gone from strength to strength. In 2012-13, the club reached two cup semi-finals.A depleted side lost in the Durham Challenge Cup to Spennymoor Town. The match brought an end to the playing career of midfielder Chris Hughes after he suffered a knee injury. And there was more heartbreak as the side narrowly missed a dream day out at Wembley after losing their two-legged FA Vase semifinal to a late extra-time goal in the second leg at home. In season 2013-14, the management team further strengthened the playing squad, bring in several experienced players in a determination to bring silverware back to Dean Street for the first time. The investment paid off with the club narrowly missing out on the league title, remaining competitive until the final weeks of the season. But the club were able to avenge the semi-final defeat of the previous season when they faced Spennymoor Town in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup. On an historic Good Friday, Shildon striker, Billy Greulich-Smith added a new chapter to the club’s history books with two late goals – the winner in added time at the end of the 90 minutes – to overcome their local rivals by two goals to one. After missing out on the Northern League Championship in the 2014-15 season by one point, the team re-grouped and won the Northern League Cup and became Champions of the Northern League the following season. Following the sudden departure of the Management Team, Chairman David Dent appointed Daniel Moore in January 2017 and Moore guided us to 3rd position in the League and a Durham Challenge Cup SemiFinal. The first piece of silverware came at the start of the 2018/19 season with a 4-1 Penalty victory against Dunston UTS. During this season Daniel Moore guided us to another top 6 finish and the season finished as it started with silverware coming back to Dean Street after the Club defeated South Shields 1-0 in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup held at the Stadium of Light.

Peter Sixsmith Column SEAHAM RED STAR 2020 A warm welcome to our good friends from Seaham Red Star for tonight’s game at Dean Street. For many years, they participated in my all time favourite Northern League game, when they took on Shotton Comrades – Comrades v Red Star, a Socialists delight, up there with Dinamo Moscow v Lokomotiv Moscow, Dukla Prague v Sparta Prague and Lokomotiv Leipzig v FC Karl Marx Stadt.Alas, Shotton Comrades are no longer with us and join FC Karl Marx Stadt,Vorwarts Berlin and Third Lanark in the dustbin of history. They come here after notching up a comfortable 2-0 win on the by pass on Saturday thanks to goals from Andrew Johnson and Nathan Greenwood.Andrew is always welcome back at Dean Street (except when he scores against us). He has been a top player in the Northern League for a number of years and I have fond memories of his time here. If the fading memory serves me correctly, he had an outstanding game at Stotfold Town when we won at Roker Park in the FA Vase. I missed the game at North Shields for a couple of reasons. I have been dog sitting for a couple of weeks and the wee doggie, a Border Terrier called Alfie, does not like to be left on her own for too long. North Shields was just too far away so I went to Richmond Town and took the dog with me. They have been Wearside League stalwarts for many years and their lovely Earls Orchard ground, underneath the curtain wall of the Norman Castle passes muster at Step 7 but not at Step 6.There was not the slightest possibility of erecting floodlights, building stands and new dressing rooms in the shadow of one of England’s finest castles so they have negotiated a deal with Richmond School to build a new ground on surplus land on their extensive campus. I had heard on the bush telegraph that we groundhoppers use, that this could well be the last senior game on the field and it seemed like a good idea to go there – and so it turned out. Town are managed by former Darlington, Ross County and Aston Villa player Neil Tarrant and have Alan White as their assistant manager. Opponents Silksworth Colliery, who have no such lofty ambitions had no such esteemed managerial duo.
Alas, the dog was not allowed in, despite having the Covid19 Track and Trace app on its phone, so we spent much of the game watching from the path that ran alongside the pitch. We were in good company; dog walkers stopped to view the game and by midway through the second half, the path resembled the main ring at Crufts, with the wee Border Terrier being joined by various Border Collies., Labradors, whippets,Yorkies and Bitsa’s – you know bits o’ this and bits o’ that. The game was always interesting, with Richmond coming out on top 2-1 and with both keepers making one outstanding save each. It certainly sounded better than the game I listened to on the way home on BBC Newcastle as Sunderland muddled to a rather fortunate 1-0 win over Peterborough United. Should you wish to berate me for any opinions expressed here, you will have to wait as I am away in Buxton in the Peak District for a few days.As well as a spot of walking – two easy ones and a harder one up Kinder Scout – I have managed to find games on three of the four nights I am there. Two are in the Northern Premier League Division One South and East and both are new grounds for me while the third is in the Step 7 Staffordshire County League. I contacted the two NPL clubs – Market Drayton Town and Kidsgrove Athletic – and both were super helpful. Market Drayton said that the chances of them exceeding 300 would only apply if Wolves sent their first team so pay at the gate, while Kidsgrove reserved me one of the last six tickets for their “El Staffico” clash with Leek Town. Great stuff and I am sure that our officials would do the same for any itinerant ground hoppers who want to visit Dean Street. Talking of Leek Town reminds me of a quip from a pal of mine who said that when he lived in Leicestershire, he visited the Vegetarian Derby between Quorn and Leek Town. Priceless…. And talking of derbies, we have our big one on Saturday as Bishop arrive trailing a dismal record behind them. It would make this old man very happy if we could heap more misery on them. You can do it Lads.

Seaham Red Star - History Seaham Red Star are named after the pub in which they were formed.A Sunday morning side in 1973, they are now widely regarded as one of the Northern League’s leading clubs. Much of the credit for the Club’s early development belongs to Ralph Pigg, the initial Secretary, and Larry Phillips, the Club’s first Manager. The pair, supported by a small committee, entered a side in the Houghton and District League and, after a promising first season, made a successful application to join the Northern Alliance League in 1974.After a further five fairly successful seasons, the Club felt sufficiently confident to join the then highly competitive Wearside League in 1979. This confidence was soon justified, the Club winning the Durham Challenge Cup in 1980 and the League and League Cup “double” in 1981-82. In 1983, they were elected to the Northern League Second Division and , after some near misses, eventually gained promotion to the First Division in the 1987-88 season. Bryan Mayhew took over as Chairman of the Club in 1986 and, with able support from former Secretaries, Harry Hobson and John McBeth and a small hardworking committee – in particular Reg Atkinson, Dave Copeland, Jim Ferguson and John Smith – the Club enjoyed First Division status for an unbroken fourteen seasons. Notable successes during this period, included finishing third in 1993-4, winning the League Cup in 1992-3 and, after leading the table for most of the season, finishing second in 1999/2000. Mayhew was also a prime mover in getting the League to join the National Pyramid, calling the Special General Meeting of clubs which eventually led to the historic decision being made. Just two years after finishing runners-up in the First Division, the Club suffered its first ever relegation in its near thirty years history. Even worse was to follow when, as a result of dwindling committee support, officials took the reluctant step of tendering the Club’s resignation from the League. However, following a positive response from a number of local people keen to see the Club continue, a new committee was formed under the chairmanship of John Smith and the resignation was withdrawn. The Club’s re-introduction to Division 2 at the start of 2002/3 got off to an unpromising start but, after bringing in Neil Hixon as Manager, the Star failed by the narrowest of margins to gain an immediate return to Division 1. Unfortunately for the Club, Neil’s achievements resulted in him being snapped up by Durham City shortly after the start of last season, effectively putting our promotion aspirations on hold for at least another year. However, with experienced Northern League manager Peter Mulcaster steadying the ship, the Club finished in a respectable mid-table position. Neil Hixon returned as manager in 2005 and along with Stuart Gooden and former Sunderland & Scotish International George Herd put together a side that
won promotion back to the First Division in the 2006/07 season. The following season Hixon & Herd moved to Sunderland RCA and Gooden took over the team which finished in a creditable 8th place in the table. The following season saw yet another change in management with former Darlington player Andy Toman taking over.Another dip in club fortunes saw the side face relegation. The 2010/11 and 2011/12 were two of the worst seasons in the Red Star history with the team involved in relegation battles which could have seen the club relegated to the Wearside League, both battles were successful and the club retained it’s Northern League status. In 2012 the club appointed Mark Collingwood and Simon Johnson, who achieved great success in the Northern Alliance League with Hebburn Reyrolle. They brought the nucleolus of the side from their previous club and have added experience and quality into what may well be a team that could challenge for honours. Steady improvement was noticed over the next four season’s and saw a 10th place finish in 2012/13 and 4th place in 2013/14, missing out on promotion by 1 point. The 2nd division championship was won in 2014/15 and in 2015/16 season we finished a creditable 9th place in a very tough First Division. After only 9 games of the 2016/17 season Collingwood left the club to go to Jarrow Roofing FC. Chris McCabe was promoted to manager and promptly brought in Paul Johnson as his co-manager.A good run of results had the Star placed comfortably in the upper half of the table, however only one win from the last 12 games saw the Star end the season in 15th spot. During that poor run McCabe resigned and Craig Lynch stepped us as player manager. At the end of a disappointing 2017/18 season, in which two managers resigned and numerous players decided to jump ship, Mark Collingwood was installed as manager for his second spell at the Star, he brought in Simon Johnson and ex Easington manager Paul Frame as his assistants along with Shaun McKenna and started his rebuilding programme in the summer of 2018. More changes saw Collingwood bring in specialist coaches in Ian Longstaffe and Michael Johnson ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Previous managers in the Club’s history include Northern League legend Paul Walker, in conjunction with the long serving Chris Copeland; former Hartlepool Manager, Billy Horner; and ex Burnley player, Harry Wilson. Former players going on to join Football League clubs include Nigel Gleghorn (Ipswich and Manchester City), Bobby Davison (Halifax, Derby and Leeds) and Stephen Harper (currently with Newcastle United).Tommy Henderson remains the Club’s leading goalscorer, netting 211 goals in 276 appearances including a record breaking 62 in 1978-9.
