ANNUAL REPORT

July 1, 2021

June 30, 2022

“With 25 years of experience, learning from our mistakes and constantly striving to do better, that puts us on a solid footing to shoot for impacting a million farms. We have the staff, the Board of Directors, and the supporters that can take us towards that next level.”

SHI CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

In 1997, Florence Reed founded Sustainable Harvest International (SH) with 3 employees and 50 partnering families in Honduras. Within two years, the Honduras pilot program expanded to Panama, Belize, and Nicaragua. Today, SHI has active programs in Belize, Honduras, and Panama, and a community of more than 8,000 supporters spanning 37 countries and 6 continents.

In 2022, SHI celebrated 25 years by recognizing 25 people and organizations who’ve helped make SHI the organization it is today. For each person honored here, there are hundreds of others who’ve contributed to SHI’s mission to create a just and sustainable future.

FY2022 PROGRAM IMPACT

SHI field trainers partnered with 351 farming families in FY22, directly improving the livelihood and well-being of 1,755 people in 25 communities across Central America. 42% of partnering families share the knowledge and training they’ve received through SHI with neighbors and extended family members, expanding SHI’s impact to approximately 2,445 people in FY22 alone.

As these farmers continue to transition their land to regenerative practices, they join more than 3000 program graduates who’ve now planted 4.39 million trees and restored 27,365 acres across the region.

Building a compost empire...

with Rogelio + Agapita

Before partnering with SHI field trainer Jaime Soto, Rogelio Mazariegos and Agapita Oviedo were barely scraping by. Rogelio made a daily wage of 50 lempiras, or approximately 2 US dollars. Rice and beans were their daily fare.

“When I first met Jaime, I didn’t have anything; I was completely stuck,” Rogelio says.

Now, he proudly lists all the different fruit and vegetables decomposing in his compost pit – yuca, banana, papaya, melon, and so much more. What’s more? That compost pit has helped him double, if not triple, his income in the past two years.

He’s started a business selling compost and other organic fertilizers. It’s not just a job; it’s his passion. Today, he has 20 loyal clients, some of whom travel more than half a day to reach him, and dreams of billboards and parking lots which would allow him to continue expanding their business.

“Even at my advanced age,” Rogelio notes with a smirk, “I can prosper.”

FINANCIAL REPORT CONTRIBUTIONS

TOTAL: $1,682,087

A 36% increase in FY22 revenue over the prior fiscal year reflects the steadfast generosity of individual donors and a noteworthy growth in foundation support. In FY21, grants comprised 6% of SHI’s annual contributions; Today, they represent fully one-quarter of contributions.

SHI’s FY2022 expenditures totaled over 1.3 million with 80% dedicated to SHI’s programs in Belize, Honduras, and Panama.

EXPENSES

TOTAL: $1,319,895

TRANSFORMATIONAL PARTNERS

We are especially grateful for the outstanding support of the following business partners:

A special congratulations to Greenbar Distillery on 1 million trees planted!

In 2008, founders Litty Mathew and Melkon Khosrovian pledged to donate the cost of planting one tree for every bottle sold. After 14 years, this simple pledge has taken on incredible proportions – as the years passed and the bottles sold, one tree turned into one million.
