leadership Over the last century, women have had incredible growth in leadership positions.

Locally, the Shawnee Heights district gained four female board members, making the majority of seven members female. Three of these women are new to the board: Renae Grame-Hansen, Erica Price and Rosa Cavazos. Lauren Tice Miller has been on the board since the last election.

“When I was elected, I was the seventh woman ever elected to our district’s school board. I believe it’s a significant milestone for our district,” Tice Miller said.

In August 1920, women got the right to vote. In November 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote during the presidential election. Today, we see women in leadership positions everywhere.

“It has validated the importance of having diversity in leadership. I think it will also demonstrate to students that anyone can hold elected office and serve in leadership roles,” Tice Miller said.

Sophie Brazington, a junior at SHHS, gave a TED talk titled “Our Own Femininity” in April. TED talks are popular lectures over Technology, Entertainment, and Design.

Having the opportunity to speak at a TEDx event is exceptional, especially for a high school student. In her talk, Brazington described what it was like to be a female in modern day society, along with gender roles and expectations.

“I hope that [women in leadership] are more accepted and celebrated,” Brazington said.

Brazington hopes to go into politics and try to make the world a better place with her knowledge and voice as she has impacted the school community. She recently applied to Leadership Greater Topeka.

“Right now, I want to focus on doing more local work and trying to figure out what it means to be a mature and intelligent leader,” Brazington said.

Recently, the middle school offered an opportunity to seventh grade girls called ‘Women in Science.’ Danielle Mott, a seventh grade science teacher, took 40 young girls to this event. It was held on the Washburn campus and each student was treated like any professional would be treated at a conference.

“The reason Shawnee Heights is always in, is because Sherri Monhollon, your assistant principal, she was the woman in science teacher for seventh grade. She’s actually the one who found it, I’ve just carried on her tradition,” Mott said.

While participating in the activities offered by the trip, the girls also got to understand the importance of being a powerful female.

Activities included an opening experiment involving DNA from the girls’ cheek cells. The girls then moved to separate groups they chose to participate in.

“I kind of want to be student of the month to prove I can do it,” Rachel Donaldson, a student that attended Women in Science, said.

Along with the women in science trip, the middle school also has a leadership studies class for eighth graders to participate in.

This class is taught by Danielle Bergman.

“Every year girls seem more interested in my class than boys.

This year, I have the greatest amount of boys, which is seven,” Bergman said.

FELIX HARRINGTON WINS ART SCHOLARSHIP

Kaw Valley Bank hosted an art show for high school seniors in the Topeka area, and SHHS artist, Felix Harrington, won first place, being awarded a $1,500 scholarship for his sculpture representation of mental illnesses.

Harrington entered sculptures focusing on mental illness, Spaulding

entered paintings on cynical realism, and Steffen entered 3-dimensional jewelry pieces. Students were able to enter any pieces made before the competition took place. Pieces included sculptures, paintings, drawings, and other mediums.

Kaw Valley Bank hosted and sponsored the event for the students. A professor from Washburn University, Azyz Sharafy, was the

judge for this competition. Three students from each high school in the Topeka area were invited. About 15 students attended the art show.

Students were able to attend by receiving a recommendation from an art teacher at their school. They submitted their pieces a couple days prior to the event and they were judged the day before. The awards were already put on the pieces when the students got there.

“The sculptures were all a part of my AP studio art portfolio last year,” Harrington said. “They were all based on bad thoughts and around mental illness. They were all personifications of thoughts, and mental illnesses and things I struggle with.”

He uses art as a form of expression for personal feelings.

All of his art has a deeper meaning than what is seen at first glance. This year Harrington has been working on sculptures that represent relationships and personal growth. He likes to combine that concept with metaphorical creatures in nature.

“It wasn’t anything that I just looked up on Wikipedia, there are a lot of artists out there who do that because they think it’s cool or spooky,” Harrington said. After graduating, Harrington is planning to attend Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR.

Eleven students from Shawnee Heights High School recently participated in the KU Engineering Design Competition themed “Engineer the 80s.”

Each team received positive comments and feedback from judges.

The Civil Engineering Team (Calvin Teater, Calin Martinez, and Tristan Kramar) built a bridge that would span the Tampa Bay Area and allow for barge traffic. Cost of the bridge was taken into account, support weakening was tested, and deck failure was tested. The team had to pitch their design, provide a cost analysis, and explain their design process.

“We looked at a lot different bridge designs used today and went with what we thought was the most supportive and would work the best,” said Teater. “

The Mechanical Engineering Team (Katherine Cook, Spencer Doole, Lauren Fleischer, and Rachel Hill) had to build a prosthetic hand for Luke Skywalker who lost his hand in battle with Darth Vader. Scoring was based upon factors such as design

process, creativity in the use of materials, and functionality.

The team presented to judges from Westar and KU Biomedical Engineering.

“There was a lot of schools there and it was really intimidating,” Fleischer said.

“We got to tour the entire engineering center there and it was really cool.” The mechanical engineering team didn’t place but performed very well and scored 93 and 94 out of 100 from the two judges.

The Chemical Engineering Team (Hayden DeLorge, Blake Hollingsworth, Jake Huffman, and Nathan Lamb) build a chemical reaction car to replace a damaged Back to the Future DeLorean in order to travel forward in time. Scoring was based upon the distance traveled, time of travel, and type of chemical reaction used to escape to the future.

TONY EMERSON wins city council Shawnee Heights’ very own parent Tony Emerson secured the election on Tuesday Nov. 7, re-electing him as the district four city council member. Emerson previously held the position for part of the year last year after the resignation of the current member. Emerson ran again this year with hopes of re-election.

Emerson owns his own business which helped persuade him to run.

“I have owned and operated a construction company for the past 28 years, constructing large civil projects. Many of these projects have been within the City of Topeka.

In recent years, the way the city contracted and the way we constructed these projects changed and started to be inefficient. I thought I could help reform this process. That is the main reason I ran,” Emerson said.

Emerson’s signs could be seen all over Topeka. He went door-to-door campaigning and visited around 1,400 houses. He spent a total of $2,500 of his own money campaigning, hoping to ensure his re-election.

Many Shawnee Heights families do not live within the Topeka city limits; however, because Emerson’s neighborhood happens to fall within the city limits he was able to run and secure the position.

Emerson’s platform consists of policies that he hopes will help the citizens of Topeka. Emerson has three main goals; one, to improve the efficiency of street rehabilitation, two, to stimulate economic development, and three, to make Topeka a “citizen’s first” city.

He wants the city to be able to afford to fix the streets and to do so at a faster rate.

One of his biggest campaign platform is his economic stimulation plan.

“I know a lot of Shawnee Heights families are hurting right now. Please know that while we can’t change the larger economic trends upending retail, we are working feverishly to recruit several large firms to Topeka,” Emerson said. “On a district level, I am working

with a couple of developers to get some additional retail stores into the 29th and Croco area.”

The results of the election showed that Emerson’s campaigning payed off. He secured the position with 1,202 votes, winning over 68.3 percent of the voters.

Emerson’s initial reaction after realizing he won was to thank god and to get back to work. Emerson urges citizens to get involved in local elections.

“Many more people vote in the Presidential and Congressional elections than in the local elections and yet the laws we pass have much more impact on your daily life than many of the national laws do,” Emerson said. “Therefore, I urge you all to get involved by voting, by emailing or calling me, or by coming down to speak at council meetings. Your voice really is important to us.”

HOW TO SUCCEED IN business Without really trying

Have you ever wondered how to commute in a three button suit? This year’s musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, follows the life of window washer J. Pierrepont Finch, played by sophomore, Bronze Constantino. This is his second musical with the high school, performing in Shrek last year.

“It’s a big responsibility, especially for this play, because I have to memorize like two hours of dialogue, and it’s crazy to think that I actually did it,” Constantino said.

Finch finds a book called How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying that helps direct him through the business world. He starts his career at the World Wide Wicket Corporation with a position in the mail room.

Along the way we’re introduced to his love interest, Rosemary, played by senior, Rylie Purling. Finch continues to climb his way to the top from junior executive to advertising manager.

He is tasked with coming up with a great idea to help the company. Since he does not actually know what he’s doing, he takes advice from Bud Frump, played by junior, Jojo Katsbulas. He’s the boss’ nephew who wants Finch gone. Bud gives him the idea for a treasure hunt show his uncle previously shut down. The idea goes awry when the location of the treasure is prematurely revealed to be in the Wicket company buildings.

Finch’s job is on the line when the chairman of the board arrives in the aftermath of the raids. Luckily, he’s able to get the chairman on his side when he learns that they both started out as window washers. In a riveting conclusion Bud ends up fired and working as a window washer himself.

For those who don’t know, history teacher, Charlie Appelhanz, played a significant role in the musical. He was the book voice that navigated young Finch through his journey. Appelhanz was originally approached by Mr. Jeff Boyer for the part. He practiced reading the script several times to work on pacing and pronunciation.

“I did not actually memorize the lines,” Appelhanz said.

“It did however give me great respect for the actresses and

actors who have so much to learn and memorize for their roles.”

The role came as a shock to students.

“When I heard that he was going to be in it I was surprised because I love Mr. Appelhanz,” Constantino said.

The musical is a way to get involved in school while having fun. There are many parts that help make the musical what it is: the pit, sound and light department, stagecraft, makeup/hair, and acting.

“It’s fun to be apart of something for the school,” senior, Morgan Shipman said.

Getting the news out is an important aspect in class.

Students don’t pay as much attention to daily announcements over the intercom as they should to get school news. Chasity King has proposed the idea to get news out a different way; for example, over canvas or even a news cast on the TV in the lunch room.

Students would have more access to school news than they do having it said over the intercom.

Teacher appreciation is the issue Reagan Emerson decided to write her proposal over. Emerson believes that appreciating teachers can take a small amount of effort, while creating a more positive attitude throughout the school.

Teachers spend a large portion of their time teaching students and the least students could do it show some appreciation for them.

Every year, high school students spend a large amount of money on school supplies. Ali Crawford proposed that we have a school dispensing machine that will provide students with school supplies and help them save money. The supply dispensers would help our school to have a more constructive environment.

Rice also suggested that there could be a fee for painting the spot, which would help raise money for the school.

Fellow of Christian Students (FCS) is a club which students can come together and talk about Christ and strengthen their relationship with him. Tyler White proposed that students who are a member of the club should be able to purchase a bible so that they could use it and follow along during club time. White believes that it would help the students be even more engaged and it would have a positive impact for students and their relationships with Christ.

Abby Parker has proposed the idea to have a garden club for the high school. The garden club would hope to add more greenery around the school. Parker would like to have a place where deer and birds could go to. By doing this, Shawnee Heights would become a more environmental and green high school. The club would create the garden and take care of it.

SWITCHING FROM IPADS TO MACBOOKS

Switching out the iPads for Macbooks in the educational setting was proposed by multiple seniors in their composition papers, including Tristan Fulzenloger. Currently, SHHS has a 1:1 initiative where every student has a tablet, but Fulzenloger argued that other schools use MacBooks or Chromebooks as a more efficient use of technology.

“The idea came up in my comp. class when we were told about our proposal paper,” Fulzenloger said. “I use a laptop myself, and I know many other students do the same, so I thought about us making the switch.”

When students are writing proposal papers, background research is necessary. Going around and asking how the students and administration felt about the proposal is how Fulzenloger went about finding his research.

“First I ran the idea by Dr. Stessman - he liked the idea, but the only issue would be financing the Macbooks,” Fulzenloger said. “He did mention that if the benefits outweighed the cost, it would be worth it.”

The most recent Macbook Air base model starts at $999, while the more powerful Macbook Pro starts at $1,299. On the other hand, iPads start at $329.

(These prices do not reflect any sort of education discount.) With Macbooks costing $1,000- $1,500, iPads were the more cost-friendly option for the district when they were purchased for the first time five years ago.

OF STUDENTS PREFER Although iPads are more costefficient, many students have expressed the frustration in writing essays and taking notes on a tablet. The iPads do not come with keyboards. Also, because the iPads for upperclassmen are now at least four years old, some are experiencing slow speeds and batteries that quickly lose power.

The student body’s reaction was in favor of the Macbooks according to a poll posted on Twitter by Valeri Dodds, another senior who wrote about changing from iPads to Macbooks. Out of 236 voters, 88 percent said they would prefer a MacBook to an iPad..

“Admin did say they’ve been looking at options to replace the iPads,” Fulzenloger said. “Mr. West said he is down for MacBooks hands down. He’s also in the same boat as Dr. Stessman with the cost of the issue.”

“I would like to see the iPads be replaced by MacBooks, not all at once, though, because that would be too expensive,” Fulzenloger said. “Maybe just phase them in by grade, like the iPads.”

Seaman High School has a 1:1 initiative using Macbooks instead of iPads.

Administration at Seaman High School was pleased with roll out of the laptops.

“Based on feedback that I have received from our students, teachers, and parents, the 1:1 rollout has gone very well,” Seaman principal Mike Monaghan said. “An increase in student and teacher engagement has been seen from having the laptops. It’s improved student learning through tools like discussion board activities, resources, and class calendars.”

The policies Seaman has adapted for these Macbooks fits the needs of the student body best, and students can personalize their Macbooks to them.

“The technology has enriched, enhanced, and expanded educational opportunities for students and professional development opportunities for our teachers,” Monaghan said.

In a survey, 30 teachers at Shawnee Heights responded with their feedback discussing Macbooks and iPads. One of the questions in the survey was “How do you think the iPads have impacted the students’ writing ability (if at all)?” The majority of staff responded that iPads have affected the students’ writing ability in a negative way because of things like autocorrect or unprofessional emails. “iPads are limiting. Advanced and upper class students especially need to have access to college-level technology. They write a LOT, not just major papers, but projects, bills, all kinds of assignments,” one teacher responded.

Of the thirty responses received from staff members, 56.7 percent of staff would prefer students have a Macbook while only 13.3 percent of staff members would prefer iPads.

The remaining preferred Chromebooks or no technology at all.

“I think that the student iPads can be very beneficial for students. They allow them to have access to current technology in a world where it is always advancing. This is important for them as they continue their education and into employment after high school or college. However, for most students if they go to college they will need an actual laptop in order to be successful. The iPads do not give them this benefit as most of the programs are vastly different on an iPad versus on a laptop whether it be a MAC or a PC,” another teacher said.

In addition, Ms. Coulter gathered student responses from her senior English classes on how students felt about Macbooks and iPads.

Repeated responses included, “Apps regularly crash,” “Short battery life,” “Easy to look up information,” “Easy to carry,” and “Laptops would be much better.”

ADDING RECYCLING BINS AROUND THE SCHOOL Each classroom has a recycling bin in the form of a box or can, but the school produces most of it’s recyclable waste in the lunchroom. This is why senior Madison Stessman proposed in her Composition paper that we provide recycling bins in the lunchroom to reduce from throwing away recyclable materials. She proposed this for both the benefit for students, but also the benefit to the environment.

“Recycling obviously reduces the amount of recyclable waste in the environment, which benefits the community by reducing the amount of trash that can end up in the various fields and streets of this district,” Stessman said. Thousands of tons of recyclable materials are thrown away every year, and end up in landfills. Plastic water bottles and other recyclable materials do not biodegradable, so it is better for the environment to recycle them so that the plastic can be melted down and reused.

“I was tired of carrying my empty drink bottles to the classroom just to recycle them,” Stessman said. She would bring her recyclable materials to the classroom just to avoid from throwing it away. Not every student is willing to go through

all of that trouble, so it would give them easier access to recycle if there was a bin in the lunchroom.

“It would help make students more responsible, not only by preparing them for a future in college, the workplace, and the community where recycling will be expected of them, but also by teaching them about their role in the health of the environment,” Stessman said. She explains in her proposal that we must teach students about recycling and taking care of the environment.

Another good point in (per ton) this proposal is that it is low maintenance and a low price TO RECYCLE compared to some. A bin, depending on style and size, can start at $130. To maintain TO SEND TO the recycling bin the only thing LANDFILL required is someone to empty it.

PAINTING PARKING SPOTS

Jared Sands proposed the opportunity for students to paint their parking spots. You would get your design pre-approved by administration, bring your own paint, and paint within the guidelines of your parking spot. Not only would it be a fun and engaging activity, it would let the artistically talented show off their creativity. Painting the parking spots also helps students gain a sense of belonging by allowing them to add a piece of themselves to the school, even if that addition is only temporary, argued Sands. This is beneficial to students and easy to implement.

The event could also act as fundraiser. At the moment, the parking spots cost $5. Shawnee Heights could charge each student an extra $10 or $15 dollars. The extra money collected would go towards whatever club would like to organize the activity. The journalism staff has taken interest on organizing the event and supervising on painting days. The money would go in the journalism account, which would go towards better cameras and equipment. Other clubs, such as Spirit Club, StuCo, or even NHS, might be interested in helping as well. This past year, students who wanted a parking pass were required to come out to the school in the summer to reserve a spot.

After they reserve a spot, seniors could then get started painting right away.

Before being allowed to paint students must show that they are using latex-based paints. To ensure the spots and stall numbers are easily visible there will be at least one inch of space from all lines and stall numbers.

Shawnee Heights would not be the first school to participate in this activity. In and out of Topeka, multiple other schools are annually painting their parking lots, separating themselves from other schools. A relevant school to recently partake is Hayden Catholic High School.

“This is the first year we did assigned stalled parking.

We had the students come out on a day in August at 8:30.

Some kids started lining up at 6:30. When they picked their spot they showed their design for the parking spot to us. It had to follow all our school rules and remain respectful and modest. After they picked their spot students were able to come in that whole week following and paint their spots,” Cody Whitney said. Whitney is an administrator

at Hayden, and was previously a special education teacher at Shawnee Heights. This was Hayden’s first year doing it and it was successful. A regular parking spot at Hayden costs $25. If you chose to paint your spot it added an extra $10 to the fee. During the painting week, the teachers and Whitney supervised the students to make sure the seniors were actually painting what they said they would. If the journalism staff would take this on, adviser Mrs. Jeni Daley and the journalism students have already agreed to organize it.

“The biggest problems that are likely to occur are students vandalizing other students’ parking spots and students painting inappropriate messages or pictures,” Sands said. “The school already has extensive rules regarding vandalism and destruction of property. The inappropriate messages would be controlled through the students having to submit their designs early and have them approved by administration. Some students will try and paint something completely different than their submitted designs, if they want to do this they will need an administrator to okay their new design before starting to paint. Students will be supervised at all times while painting to ensure that they are adhering to the approved school appropriate designs. If they do not, they will not be allowed to paint and will be sent home.”.

IMPROVING ROADWAYS INTO SHHS The four-way stop intersection at 45th and Shawnee Heights road has become a busy and hazardous road for the students and patrons. The main people traveling through here are students and teachers going to and from school. Multiple times there have been incidents where people are running late because of the back up from the intersection. Since people don’t want to be late to where

they are going, this increases the chances of collisions.

Senior Ericka Miranda has proposed an idea to fix these problems. She believes that putting in a roundabout and a left turning lane could be a solution for the problems.

Miranda has done research on the benefits of having a roundabout, and found that they reduce crashes by 75 percent, decreasing the likelihood and severity of collisions.

Miranda argued the roundabout would make traffic run smoother and be more safe overall. Traffic

moving smoother would decrease the chance of collision. Many students are on their first year of driving, and people struggle with knowing when it’s their turn to proceed. Miranda argued this problem would be eliminated with her proposed solutions. Roundabouts are much easier to understand and travel through. Miranda would include adding the left turn lane into the high school and middle school in case traffic is backed into the roundabout.

“Drivers are more knowledgeable of driving through roundabouts than they are of stop sign controlled intersections,” Miranda said.

To help with her research, Miranda contacted the original architect who designed the roadways leading into the school when it was built in the early 60s. His original plan differed from what was ultimately implemented, and he encouraged Miranda to bring her proposal to local officials.

The roundabout would ultimately take two to three years to build. The construction would start during summer break and be constructed in chunks. There would be a plan for the residents of nearby homes and others needing to travel through. This would cost around $300,000 to create. The money could come from the left over sales tax for transportation from the city. Although this seems like a lot of money, it would be beneficial in the long run for the safety of the drivers and passengers Miranda said.

However, the intersection is very busy at certain times of the year. It would be tough to make the construction plans so students and residents of the nearby homes could still get to where they’re going while the construction is happening. Finding the $300,000 could also be tough.

Most drivers are more knowledgeable of how to drive through a roundabout than a four way stop intersection. Miranda proposed this would reduce the amount of tardies for students and make it ultimately safer, along with decreasing the number of collisions by making the speed of traffic slower but smoother.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DUAL CREDIT CLASSES In high school, students are given the opportunity to take dual credit classes. These classes are half of the original price if taken in high school, but it can still be expensive. Cade Holmes has proposed the idea to raise the parking pass price from $5 to $20 with the extra $15 put into scholarships. Students that need financial assistance with paying for these classes would then apply for the scholarships.

For Washburn University classes the price for high schoolers is $141 per credit hour and most classes are set up to be three credit hours.

Shawnee Heights also offers Allen Community College classes that are $97 per credit hour.

Although these are less than the original price that seniors would be paying next year in college, it can still be expensive especially for students paying on their own. This is one of the reasons why Holmes has proposed the scholarship idea.

There are about 450 students who get parking permits each year at the price of $5. The school brings in approximately $2,250 from these fees. By raising the parking permit from $5 to $20 the school would have an extra $6,750 that could be put in the scholarship funds for students. If split into $700 for each scholarship, there would be nine full scholarships to give out. The money could be split however the school would like to do it. This is just an idea Holmes put out there.

Holmes’ plan for the scholarship is that a committee would be formed by either administration or board.

“Though for some teachers committee work is a negative thing, this would allow staff to have positive interactions with students that increase their educational opportunities,” Holmes said.

The committee would be in charge of reading and reviewing applications and then would select the winners after. The committee would have control of dividing the money to the winners as they please knowing that some students may have more dual credit classes than others that apply. They would also have the say on what rules

and guidelines they would like to be implemented for the scholarships.

“One might argue that it is unfair for different students to receive different amounts depending on the number of college hours a student is taking, but the hope is that the application process and the staff committee would work to make it as equitable as possible,” Holmes said.

This proposal would have to be approved by administration and possibly the board. Several positive outcomes would come from this scholarship idea because it may be the students who want to take college classes are held back by the cost. Students would also get the experience of turning in applications for scholarships for colleges as well. This would give students the next step to getting used to college and what it will be like next year.

Holmes stated in his paper that if this proposal takes off, the school could raise other fees that students pay each year as well. This additional money could go to concurrent enrollment classes that often have a price to them as well. These classes aren’t as hefty of a price as dual credit classes, but it would help students who are taking multiple classes with fees to lower the overall payment.

PROVIDING CONTRACEPTIVES FOR STUDENTS Senior Avery Hauschild proposed to the school that they provide free condoms in the nurse’s office for students to use.

Hauschild explained how she thought condoms in the nurse’s office bathroom would increase the use of the contraception and help to prevent teen pregnancy and the spread of STIs and STDs. “I wanted to write something that had the potential to help other students, and create a safe environment at the school,” Hauschild explained.

She found that 43 percent of high schoolers admitted to not using a condom the last time they had sex. The amount of teen girls who contract a new infection each year is 51 percent, and 49 percent for teen boys. To lower these numbers, Hauschild wants to make attaining condoms easier for teens.

Although many people would argue that this will increase the amount of teens having sex, Hauschild disagrees. “Having condoms available would just be another resource that students can take advantage of if the need arises, and would not be encouraging students to engage in sexual activity,” Hauschild said.

Both Lawrence High School and Free State High School provide their students with this contraception. They keep them in the nurse’s office bathroom to

The basketball season is finally here and the T-birds have started off the season with a big overtime win against the Desoto Wildcats on Friday, Dec. 1, even after giving up 51 points in the first half.

“We shot the ball extremely well and showed toughness coming back down 11,” head coach Steve Wallace said. “We obviously started poorly on defense in the first half, but proved in the third quarter holding Desoto to four points that we can play defense when motivated.”

The Thunderbirds lost key players from last year including Poncho Freeman, Michael Brooks (Baker University) and Trey Brown (Missouri Western State University), but Wallace has faith that the new players will step up and fill in those spots.

“We have guys that worked at the JV level, worked this summer, and competed against our seniors last year and they are ready to prove themselves this year,” Wallace said.

Another player that has been added to the roster this year is senior Cade Holmes. Holmes played football for the Thunderbirds all four years of high school, and his senior year he earned a spot on the class 5A All-State Football team as an Offensive Lineman, and earned first team All-Centennial League honors as an offensive tackle and a defensive lineman. Holmes looks to take his competitive edge and winning momentum from the football field to the basketball court.

“It’s my senior year and I wanted to play one last time. Playing basketball is also going to help with my footwork for football as well,” Holmes said.

Since Holmes is going to play football in college he has started a special diet so he won’t lose too much weight during the basketball season.

“I am trying to keep my weight up while I’m playing basketball so, I try to eat 7,500 calories a day. Before I go to bed I make a shake with 2,000 calories in it,” Holmes explained.

One of those players returning this season is star Tyler White. White has been a part of the team all four years and made a great debut in the 5A state games.

“I’m using last year and the experiences I had to help lead this year. Now that I know what it takes to win a state championship and how good it feels to do so, I just want to help the younger guys understand that so hopefully we can make another run at it this year,” White said.

White had a big game Friday night, with a game high of 22 points, six of them being threes. “I was very happy with it (the game). With so many young guys without varsity experience playing their first games, it’s kind of expected to have the slow start we had. I was just very glad with the fight we had to be able to come back and get the win, and starting the season 1-0 is always a great feeling,” Tyler White said.

After talking to Wallace and asking if he feels pressure this year to win state again he had the simple answer of “No, this is a completely new team.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL COMBATS LOW NUMBERS

After finishing last season 8-13, the Lady Thunderbirds are looking to senior Lydia Ostenson to lead the team this year. Ostenson averaged 17 points and finished 2nd team All League and 1st team All City as a guard last year.

However, the Lady Thunderbirds will have to combat low numbers and the loss of two coaches this season.

“[My goals are to] Improve from last year and do the unexpected; surprise people,” Ostenson said. “I’m excited for my senior year and playing home games in front of the student section.”

The team will also start to rely more heavily on senior and point guard Kelsey Riedel, senior post Ali Crawford, junior forward Lauren Fleischer, and sophomore guards Kamrin Wells and Ali Fulks.

Compared to the last five seasons, girls basketball had the fewest number of girls tryout this year.

From 2013 to 2016, the team averaged 30 girls after tryouts from freshmen to seniors, according to data collected from the athletics office. However, as of print date, the team has 16 girls,

only two of which are freshmen; 19 girls total tried out for the team.

In his 18th season, head coach Bob Wells said he doesn’t believe the low numbers will impact the varsity team.

“Working on getting better both as players and as a team every single day, I think if they work hard and focus on improvement then some of the wins are going to take care of themselves,” Wells said.

In May, JV coach Amanda (Fessenden) McNeill took a head coaching position at Shawnee Mission North. Freshman coach Danielle Falor is now coaching at the middle school. Replacing McNeill is Kim Brown, who was previously the 8th grade girls head coach. The decision was made to not hire for the freshman coaching position because of low numbers.

“It’s actually kind of depressing that no one’s in the gym [and] sad that no one plays girls basketball,” Ostenson said. Wells attributed the lack of participants to difficult class schedules and other sports commitments.

“A lot of kids who don’t like basketball as much as they do other sports [which impacts numbers],” Wells said. “It’s a big commitment for four months and a lot going on, especially when you have a lot of kids who are busy in other sports...There were only two freshman that came out this year, and there’s usually double digits in freshman, at least 10 to 12, and so if you take that number and put it with the group, that pushes us up there close to 30 which is usually where we’re at.”

According to data from the athletics office, girls participation in KSHSAA activities has fluctuated dramatically over the past five years. Participation in cheer has doubled since 2013, going from 25 girls to 51 in 2016. However, last year the volleyball team and softball team took home state championship titles, but numbers were about the same as always. Tennis went from 39 girl participants in 2012 to 18 last season. Overall, the number of girls participating in KSHSAA sports (including cheer and dance) went down 50 from the 2015-2016 school year to 2016-2017. Numbers for the 20172018 school year are not finalized.

“I think the main trend that many schools are seeing is an increase in specialization and fewer girls being three-sport or even two-sport athletes,” Athletic Director Mr. David Wonnell said. “I believe that high school athletes should play multiple sports and not specialize due to burnout, over use injury, and to just be a better overall athlete and competitor.”

Lady T-Birds opened their season with a loss to De Soto last Friday. Their next game is December 8 against Topeka West.

by Chad Parks

Chad Parks is involved in multiple activities with our school such as teaching PE at the middle school, 8th grade strength and conditioning, and coaching the wrestling team. He connects with the students by being involved in Young Life and FCS. Parks’ favorite part of being a part of the school is building relationships with students and faculty, and wrote a book about his experiences.

“The Shawnee Heights community is tight knit and that has provided ample opportunity to build lifelong relationships,” Parks said.

Parks began sharing his stories and experiences with mentors and teams. A couple years back he created a blog where he writes about these lessons. The blog is what sparked the idea of his book. You can visit his blog at coachchadparks.com

“The success of those blogs ultimately made me realize if these lessons are not written down, they may one day be lost to the world and the people that could benefit from them,” Parks said. He began speaking in front of people all over the midwest, including our Fellowship of Christian Students club. He explained that when he is speaking to students, he feels alive and that he is doing what he was called to do in life.

Parks wrote and published a book called ‘Game Changing Moves’. The book involves life lessons and principles of success that he’s learned throughout his life. This book is all about personal growth, and growing through the years and your experiences. One thing that is special about his book is that at the end of each chapter there are questions that allow the reader to apply them to themselves and connect personally with.

Parks is an example of learning from other’s experiences, and the book includes lessons on leadership, sports, business, faith and more. He was inspired by mentors throughout life that ranged from coaches to the people he cut grass for when he was young.

“My dad is a good husband, father and is a Hall of Fame wrestling coach,” Park said. Parks has been highly influenced by his father. Throughout his day to day life, his motivation is to use the gifts God has given him.

”I want to make sure I use it all up before I pass one day,” Parks said.

1. I bough some simple vases from the dollar tree 2. I taped them with patterns and spray painted them.

3. I added a loved ones favorite flowers.

Marble Mugs 1. To start off i went to Dollar Tree and found these mugs for a dollar each.

2. Get a container full of room temp water.

3.Pick you colors of nail polish and drip it into the water 4. I dipped the mug into the water and cleaned the excess with a Q-tip

Six-Pack Survival Pack 1. I started with a six pack of coke bottles 2. Spray paint the carton your dads favorite color 3. Paint the words with acrylic paint.

SAME DREAM The gym has been rearranged this season to better serve athletes and fans.

In the previous arrangement, the home team had to walk past the visiting student section on their way to the locker room. However, in this new layout, Shawnee Heights athletes will be closer to the locker rooms and have better access to the new training room. In addition, the band will be right next to the student section and the cheerleaders will have more space to perform.
