OUR MISSION In collaboration with our partners, we provide dignified, equitable and consistent access to nutritious food, creating a foundation for community health. OUR VISION An Orange County with food and nutritional security for all. OUR VALUES Integrity & Accountability People First Stewardship Purpose Driven Compassion feedoc.org 2 FY22 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your support of Second Harvest Food Bank. While the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, it’s not entirely behind us. The need remains above the prepandemic levels of 2019, and we continue to fill that need. Higher prices at the gas pump, the grocery store and elsewhere are felt by all of us. But none more than those who are food insecure and forced to choose between paying rent or medical bills and buying groceries.

There is much uncertainty in our world and our community. Yet there is also much to be hopeful for. In August 2022, we celebrated the first anniversary of Harvest Solutions Farm. Thanks to our volunteers, we harvested over 2.5 million pounds of fresh, nutrientrich produce for the community. Speaking of volunteers, this year more than 6,000 individuals returned to volunteer at the Farm and in our Distribution Center, totaling over 37,000 hours.

We are grateful to all who help make our work possible: the donors who fuel our mission; the almost 300 members of our Partner Network who work on the front lines; our volunteers including our Board of Directors; and our passionate, dedicated, smart team of employees. Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dave Coffaro, who served concurrently as board chair AND as interim CEO (his second tour of duty) in 2021.

As we mark the start of our 40th year, our ability to serve food-insecure neighbors in need for four decades would not be possible without your support and that of so many in Orange County. Thank you!

With gratitude and hope for a brighter tomorrow!!

Food for Good CONSISTENT ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOOD SUPPORTING MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES LEADING TO ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES LEADING TO OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS We increase capacity for self-sufficiency throughout Orange County by helping everyone consistently eat well. As a result, the economy benefits, health outcomes improve and children and families are better prepared for success. When adults are fueled with nutritious food, they are better equipped to perform at work, pursue career advancement and contribute to the health and growth of our local economy. Additionally, better academic outcomes for young people create greater opportunities. Elementary students who eat well have the energy and focus they need to learn and play. Studies show that good nutrition improves attendance, behavior, concentration and academic performance. Healthy meals each day support growing, learning and achieving. With healthy food on their plates, children can grow and develop and adults of all ages can reduce their risk of chronic diseases and better maintain socio-emotional well-being and health. In addition, research shows eating a healthy diet and avoiding processed foods and refined sugars can reduce symptoms of depression. Food is fuel. When everyone has access to healthy food such as fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy and protein, our community develops a foundation of resiliency on which to build. Consistent access to nutritious food options increases food security and supports enhanced community resiliency. By providing fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy, whole grains and proteins for our neighbors in need, Second Harvest is setting up children and families for success in school, at work and in life. Grateful and Giving Back

Georgina, originally from Cuernavaca, Mexico, lost her husband to COVID in December 2021. Money was extremely tight and with skyrocketing inflation, it was becoming increasingly difficult to put food on the table for her and her daughter, Rosario. She turned to Latino Health Access (LHA), a Second Harvest partner, for help.

“I’m disabled and Rosario isn’t making enough for both of us. But God brought me through the front door here, and I am thankful every day,” she said.

Georgina, overwhelmingly grateful, wanted to pay it forward. She began volunteering at LHA, helping people like her who are in need of food assistance.

“I thank God for the opportunity He gave me to serve. We came from Cuernavaca without anything. But God supported us and brought me to this place. It’s a blessing to help and I receive blessings in return.”

TESTIMONIAL FY22 ANNUAL REPORT feedoc.org 8
“The food is very nutritious and there’s lots of variety. I love the bananas, strawberries, grapes and recently watermelon. It’s a very complete pantry, and every seven days I have groceries.”

Happy Birthday, Harvest Solutions Farm

Harvest Solutions Farm, a 45-acre farm in Irvine that is a collaboration between Second Harvest, Solutions For Urban Agriculture and South Coast Research and Extension Center, recently turned one. In August 2021, we transplanted 26,000 cabbage plants. By Fall 2022 we harvested an abundance of leafy green cabbage, broccoli, broccolini and celery, totaling over 2.5 million pounds of fresh produce.

VOLUNTEERS GET DOWN AND DIRTY ON THE FARM EVERY WEEK FOR OUR COMMUNITY. ONLY THROUGH THEIR GENEROUS PLANTING, WEEDING AND HARVESTING ARE WE ABLE TO PROVIDE THIS FRESH, NUTRITIOUS, LOCALLY GROWN FOOD TO ORANGE COUNTY.

A Fresh Approach

The Orange County Hunger Alliance (OCHA), the first-of-its-kind joint venture including Abound Food Care, Community Action Partnership of Orange County / Orange County Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, deploys its resources through OC’s food distribution network to effectively address and mitigate root causes of poverty and hunger. Two important OCHA initiatives were kicked off this fiscal year:

THE IMPACT PARTNER

MODEL: Select community partners that each offer a wide variety of wraparound services in addition to food distribution are working with OCHA to optimize and eliminate the pain points in food distribution. As a result, they will be able to focus on other comprehensive services that lift individuals and families out of poverty.

CALFRESH OUTREACH:

Over 30% of individuals in Orange County who are eligible for CalFresh food assistance (known nationally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) are not receiving those benefits. This is especially true among Hispanic families in Santa Ana and Anaheim. OCHA hired a bilingual Public Relations & Outreach Specialist focused on these underserved communities. The coordinator utilizes our Partner Network sites in those cities, school districts, local officials, other nonprofits and others to educate families about the benefits of CalFresh, dispel misconceptions and ultimately increase the low program take-up rate in Orange County.
