Thank you for joining us as we share memorable moments from this school year and introduce you to a few of the people who make Sherwood Christian Academy wonderful. Within these pages, you’ll catch a glimpse of who we are and where you belong in the SCA family. While we can’t capture every incredible blessing and event, we have so much to be thankful for this season!
As I reflected on Scripture recently, Ecclesiastes 4:12 resonated deeply:
“Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (NKJV).
With this verse in mind, I envision SCA as the third cord partnering with your family and the Lord. Together, we’re committed to nurturing your children with a steadfast biblical worldview, ultimately shaping them into mature, Christ-like leaders who not only thrive, but also positively impact the world around them.
In the following pages, you’ll meet current students, faculty, alumni, and families who exemplify this leadership. They’re leading in various spheres, using what they learned at SCA to make a difference for Christ, whether in their classrooms, on the court, or across the globe.
Rooted in Southwest Georgia, our legacy at SCA reaches beyond our community, building and cultivating lasting leaders like eagles soaring above obstacles and challenges, sharing Christ’s love wherever they go. Through our distinctively Christian college-prep education, we integrate biblical principles into every aspect of school life. From daily instruction and spiritual development to athletics and fine arts, Scripture guides our approach, shaping well-rounded individuals who lead with excellence and integrity.
As you journey through the pages of Soar Magazine, we invite you to witness the Lord’s blessings and vibrant community that makes SCA truly special.
We are thrilled to have you here!

We hope as you flip through the pages of this magazine you get a glimpse into the DNA of our school and what makes it so special. In this edition, you’ll see families that served together on mission, experienced teachers who are difference makers, a headmaster who loves his school, and students who are committing to do everything with excellence, whether it’s in athletics, fine arts, or academics! With the goal of keeping students, parents, alumni, faculty, friends, and future Eagles connected, Soar Magazine arrives both digitally and in print in the summer.
Nestled on a picturesque and serene campus, Sherwood Christian Academy (SCA) offers a dynamic and expanding environment for students to thrive academically, spiritually, and socially. SCA has been a vital part of Christian education in Southwest Georgia since 1985 and was founded as a ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church.
SCA continues its legacy of providing a distinctively Christian college-prep education. At SCA, our mission goes beyond academic achievement; we’re committed to nurturing future leaders. Through our rigorous academic programs, numerous extracurricular activities, and unwavering focus on character and spiritual development, we empower students to make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
SCA is distinctively Christian in that biblical training is interwoven into every facet of school life. Every grade level, including K3, is provided daily biblical instruction and regular Scripture memory. Science, for example, doesn’t shy away from controversial topics like evolution, but instead addresses them from a biblical worldview. Likewise, in English literature, students are introduced to literary classics, but again are guided through these works from a biblical perspective by Christian educators.
Regarding athletics, SCA athletes are trained for the highest level of competition while also being instructed on how to navigate success and failure, as well as manage the balance of confidence and humility. SCA’s athletic staff is committed to sports programs that produce athletes who compete with excellence — on and off the field.
In our fine arts programs, biblical standards again guide every decision. Show selection, set construction, and script writing are all
influenced by Scripture. Student leaders are being encouraged to take ownership of major productions including creating choreography. We desire more than to be a Christian school in name only. We’re intentional in allowing Scripture to permeate everything we do.
SCA’s mission is to partner with parents to provide students with a quality, Bible-based education that will lead students to strive for excellence in all things as they become Christ-like leaders in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities.
Our caring, qualified teachers spend more time with their students because of our small class size. With an average teacher experience of 18-plus years, SCA faculty goes above and beyond to make learning fun and interesting, while providing students with the tools they need to succeed in life.
There’s something very special at SCA. Contact our admissions director at (229) 883-5677 to schedule a tour and see it for yourself.
You care about the future and education of your child. You’re concerned about their environment and their heart. We are too.
Your child is not another number at SCA. We value and celebrate every new family that partners with us each year. Teachers, staff, and administration all know your child by name. From the moment they’re greeted getting out of the car until the moment they leave campus, your child is welcomed and loved.
We’re here to shine bright in our community and make a lasting difference in the lives of those we impact. Come join us and shine at SCA!
IN HER TIME AT SHERWOOD, JOY EARNED:
• Senior Eagle Award
• A Honor Roll
• Honor Graduate
• National Honor Society
• ACSI Distinguished Christian HS Student
• Homecoming Queen
• Senior Athlete Award
Asmall cross plaque adorned the wall of Joy Kendrick’s childhood bedroom. Gifted by her grandmother, the cross was etched with the words from Philippians 4:12-13, reminding Joy of her life Scripture verses.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV).
“I would quote this verse while I was racing and out of breath, especially during my cross country days,” said the SCA ’22 graduate and talented athlete.
In the summer of 2022, that dainty plaque was packed away and traveled to Kentucky as Joy settled into college life and her first year of collegiate basketball at the University of the Cumberlands, where she was awarded a full athletic scholarship in September 2021.
In her first year of collegiate basketball, Joy played as a true freshman and excelled, and her team made it to the NAIA Sweet 16. But in her sophomore year, the UC Lady Patriots had their best season in the university’s history by winning 26 games and making it to the Final Four. During her two seasons so far at the University of the Cumberlands, Joy has played in 65 games — scoring 196 points, 90 assists, 37 steals, 14 blocks, and 80 rebounds.
During her nine years at SCA, Joy competed
in cross country, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and track. She was a three-time individual state champion in cross country, and she earned team state championships in cross country, track, and middle school girls basketball. She was named All-State player and Most Valuable in multiple sports, and her impressive athletic résumé spans two pages. But when asked, Joy says her favorite sport is basketball.
Joy describes herself as “competitive, Christian, and laid back or chill,” and basketball is the place where she shines bright as a player and a leader. Early in her high school career, Joy set goals for herself, including 1,000 career points. She achieved that incredible feat and surpassed it — hitting 1,725 career points by the end of her senior season!
SCA Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Gary Oxendine coached Joy for four years. He said of her high school career, “The most impressive thing about Joy’s career point totals is the fact that she has been averaging around doubledigit assists for the last two years as well. So she is accounting for about 20 additional points per game.”
Joy’s basketball career at SCA was extensive and full of achievements and awards, but one of the biggest accomplishments she earned was building her leadership skills. As senior team captain and the oldest player of the 202122 basketball season, Joy stepped up. She had the entire team to think about, not just what she could achieve as an individual player.
The leadership role gave Joy the push to be more vocal with her opinions and encourage
and instruct her teammates.
“Being a leader was important because there were no other seniors. Earning the team’s trust and their respect and wanting them to hear what I had to say was important, whether on the court or off the court,” Joy said.
This led to Joy’s senior basketball experience becoming one of her favorite seasons, and the girls varsity team felt like a family with its comradery and unity. Teammates spurred each other on and had each other’s backs.
“The way we spoke to and treated each other off the court reflected our unity on the court,” she said. “We looked out for each other.”
“It helped with chemistry, and we played well together. It was refreshing to be on a team where everyone got along and was unified.”
Not only did the varsity team feel like family, but Joy had the unique opportunity to play alongside her younger sister Julia, rising sophomore at SCA and an athlete to watch in the years to come.
“Playing with Julia was one of my favorite memories,” Joy said. “Some of the best times on the court were when we made plays together. It was awesome to play with her and watch her score.”
Another time Joy warmly remembers is playing on teams with her older siblings, specifically
with her sister Anna (’19) during Joy’s freshman year.
“Playing with my older sister was amazing for me. I loved being able to talk with her about sports. It felt like she was so much older and wiser.”
Joy watched her sister Anna rally and encourage the Lady Eagles to be the best they could be during their games. Playing with Anna pressed Joy to do more as an athlete and leader.
There was an intense basketball game Joy’s freshman year with Anna that got down to the wire and ended up being a nail-biter.
Joy told the story, “We were playing at home and were down at halftime by more than 20 points. In the fourth quarter, two of my teammates ran into each other, and one broke her ankle. We were worried for her and said, ‘We’ve got to do this for Nat, and we can’t lose this game!’ We came back and tied them to go into overtime. It was an exciting moment! We came back and won the game!”
Joy’s teams made it to state both her freshman and senior years, and the Eagles won runnerup at both. That didn’t diminish the effort and time she put into those seasons and the special moments she spent with her basketball family and sisters.
Joy considered it a privilege and honor to have the opportunity to play with her siblings during her high school career. Having older siblings who thrived in athletics pressed her harder in her own career. Joy’s oldest sibling, Joshua (’17), played basketball in college. Joy played SCA soccer with older sister Catherine (’20), who received a collegiate soccer scholarship. Joy and her younger brother Caleb, upcoming SCA senior, practiced together at home and helped each other improve their basketball skills.
“I am so glad to be in a big family. There’s pros and cons to being a middle child, but it’s definitely a pro being able to compete with older siblings,” Joy said.
Participating in sports at SCA has been a family
experience since Joy started cross country in middle school. There was a season when the Kendrick family turned cross country meets into mini family road trips and cheered on all six children during Saturday competitions. It’s a memory they look back on fondly.
Her parents, Alex and Christina, are Joy’s biggest cheerleaders. Alex filmed Joy’s games for their family so she could rewatch them for highlights and mistakes. Cheering on Joy, Julia, and Caleb in her senior basketball season “was definitely some of my parents favorite moments of that year,” Joy said.
SCA athletics has been a big part of Joy’s life and has given her an opportunity to cultivate relationships with her peers and be encouraged by her coaches.
“Sports has grown me in a lot of ways that I’m thankful for because it’s pushed me mentally, physically, and spiritually. I’ve had coaches and teachers pour into me,” Joy said.
“Coach Ox[endine] would always say, ‘Whether you win or lose, do it all to the glory of God.’ He would rather us keep our witness and lose every game than to win a game but lose our witness.” Joy remembers him stating this truth before every game.
Joy is currently double majoring in coaching
and exercise/sports science at the University of the Cumberlands. She landed at the private Christian university through a series of Godordained events stemming from her summers playing competitive basketball with the Amateur Athletic Union.
Acknowledging that only God knows her future, Joy commented about how special it would be “if I go off to college, finish in four years, and end up back in Albany” and possibly help coach her sister Julia during her senior year of high school.
“I wasn’t able to beat the three-point record, but Julia might be able to!” Joy exclaimed.
There’s no doubt that Joy is championing the
younger generation as well as her teammates in Kentucky as she continues to seek to glorify God and rely on Him for strength. Joy has already made an impact in SCA’s basketball athletes over the past two years since she graduated. She invested time with young Eagles at Kenny Roberts’ Lil Eagles Basketball Camp as well as at a summer basketball camp that several of our middle school students attended last summer.
Joy’s advice to high school athletes: “Make sure your relationships are strong with your teammates first. You’re not playing for yourself, but for the Lord. All glory to God! Push yourself in every single area: sports, life, and school. Manage time wisely. Make a lot of memories with your team — on and off the field. Make the most of your time, because it flew by so fast.”
We’re building up leaders in Christ through in-depth Bible instruction, weekly chapel messages, community service, mission trips, and personal discipleship. Here are a few highlights of what our students love about spiritual growth at SCA!
“SCA has contributed to my spiritual growth through chapels and Spiritual Emphasis Weeks. This year we mainly focused on the topic of witness. This challenged me to go out and share my faith publicly. It encouraged me to be bold in my faith and not keep it quiet. This also pushed me to worship more freely and openly during worship in chapel. I’ve grown a lot, especially this year because of the spiritual aid Sherwood provides.”
“Sherwood Christian Academy is an influential Bible-based school. I can testify to this statement for I have seen so much spiritual growth in my life. That occurred when I was in a huddle after a football game or in musical theater right before the show by praying together. Each and every teacher has helped me and guided me in my walk with the Lord.”
“Sherwood Christian Academy prioritizes not only salvation, but also growth and maturity. While biblical principles and applications are integrated throughout classrooms and lessons, chapel serves as a designated time for students to spend one-on-one time with the Lord. Throughout the week, I look forward to chapel because it allows me to reflect on God’s provision and the grace that He gives daily.”
“SCA is a school where God comes first. He is the motivation behind everything and I am constantly reminded by teachers of His power and love for me, even through normal academic lessons. Having been in a public school system for most of my education and transferring into the Sherwood Christian family over a year ago, the difference, environment, and support from those around me has exponentially grown my faith. SCA is a place where God and His Word are sacred and I am so grateful to call it my school.”
“I have gone to Sherwood for 12 years. From all my years at Sherwood, I would say that the staff of SCA is what has encouraged my walk with the Lord the most and has caused me to grow the most spiritually. The kind, loving Christian spirit of my teachers from when I was younger helped form me into the young woman I am today. Now, I have men and women of God who lead by example daily and without even knowing exemplify how a man or woman of God should live. I am truly honored to be able to be surrounded by such wonderful people and I can’t wait for next year!”
In November 2023, a group of SCA students, faculty, staff, and parents embarked on a transformative mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Led by SCA Athletic Director Jay Flynt, the group collaborated with SCORE International to organize and conduct sports camps for children and youth. Their outreach efforts extended to hundreds of children, including those from a local orphanage, leaving a profound impact on the community. Additionally, SCA Spanish teacher Kelsey Hudson provided invaluable translation assistance throughout the trip. This commitment to sharing the gospel globally exemplifies the core values of SCA, and we’re looking forward to many more impactful mission trip opportunities in the future!
“Serving on the mission field with my whole family was absolutely incredible. Robert and I could not be prouder of our kids and how each of them jumped in to serve and show the love of Christ. There were moments that I remember thinking nothing else mattered except for living in the moment watching my husband and kids being the hands and feet of Jesus in the Dominican Republic.”
“This has been a life-changing event for our family. We’re now acutely aware of how richly blessed we are and how much we’ve taken for granted. This experience pulled us out of ourselves and deeper into obedience in Christ. We want less and want to serve more. We are going back in the future and hope more families come with us.”
Meet Will Moorhead — a three-time state champion in tennis and rising senior at SCA with aspirations to go to law school and return to Albany to join his family’s law firm!
Q: What drives you to do your best in life and in academics/athletics/activities?
A: There are two big things that drive me. First, my relationship with God drives me to do my best so that I will be the best representation of Christ to others that I can be. Second, my love for my family also drives me to do my best because I want to represent them well.
Q: Do you have goals or visions for what you’d like to do when you graduate from SCA?
A: I would like to attend the University of Georgia’s business school and after that, attend its law school. Following law school, I plan on coming back home to practice law with my dad and grandfather.
Q: What are your extracurricular activities and leadership roles at SCA?
A: Tennis: My primary extracurricular activity throughout my life has been and is currently the sport of tennis. I have had the honor of playing No. 1 singles for the SCA Eagles varsity boys team and serving as team captain since freshman year. Our SCA boys varsity team won the team state championship all three years
and the region championship my freshman year. In addition to our team’s successes, I won the individual tennis region and state championships all three years. Playing tennis is a joy, and I’m very thankful for my coaches who have poured into me at SCA.
Outside of school tennis, I was able to train for a few weeks in Atlanta this past summer, which allowed me to mature greatly and to become more self-reliant. Another fun fact about me is that I played an adult United States Tennis Association match on grass courts in Scottsdale, Arizona, a couple of summers ago and am scheduled to play the same tournament this summer!
Additional Sports: Basketball, cross country, and golf
Literary Competitions: I enjoyed competing mentally through the literary competition’s impromptu speech in both 10th and 11th grade. My 10th grade year, I won third in the state competition and won fourth place in my 11th grade year.
Chess: I competed as a member of the top flight on the SCA chess team all three years. My 10th and 11th grade years, our team won
Our mock trial team won first place in region and district and competed in the state tournament my sophomore year.
“
third place in the region tournament, sending us to state competition.
Mock Trial: I had the opportunity to compete on SCA’s inaugural mock trial team my 10th grade year. I served as an attorney in both my 10th and 11th grade years and presented the opening argument my 10th grade year. Our team won first place in region and district and competed in the state tournament my sophomore year. This year, our team won third place in both the region and district tournaments.
Community Service: Since eighth grade, I have served on the Sherwood Baptist Church technology team during Wednesday night Elevate youth church services and have served in the same position since ninth grade for the SCA chapel every Thursday.
Q: Do you have any high school awards or honors?
A: In addition to my tennis state championships and mock trial wins, I am in the National Honor Society and received SCA’s headmaster’s A honor roll all three years in high school. I also have the fourth highest numeric average in my class.
Q: What do you do during your summer time off to prepare for your future?
A: This past summer, in lieu of seeking an internship, I pursued a higher level of tennis training on my own in Atlanta to help me in several ways: first, to help me determine if I wanted to pursue a path to play tennis in college; and second, to give me the freedom and independence to start figuring life out on my own. I learned to play under demanding coaches, played with higher level players, and explored and developed relationships with both teenagers and adults that continue today. It was maturity training that will stay with me for life. I spent the remainder of my summer pursuing SAT preparation that led to being invited to be an inaugural member of Khan Academy’s Schoolhouse.world, a peer tutoring program created by Sal Khan. This entailed hours of material learning and testing to improve my chances of obtaining entrance to my dream college: the University of Georgia.
This summer, in addition to playing tennis, I am considering taking a course with Clemson University to learn how to pilot a commercial drone, obtain my drone piloting license, and explore business opportunities related to drones. I also intend to explore providing tutoring services through Schoolhouse.world on a part-time basis to help other students prepare for the SAT.
Q: What is a favorite memory or moment of high school so far?
A: My favorite memory in high school so far was winning the tennis team state championship in the ninth grade. I had a great time making memories with my coach and teammates (including my brother, Sam) in Rome, Georgia. Grant Fricks [SCA tennis teammate] was very funny and made every moment a blast.
Q: What are you most looking forward to over the last year of high school?
A: I am looking most forward to the college application season, including touring and applying to colleges.
Q: What is your favorite thing about SCA?
A: One of my favorite memories in high school so far was when I won Homecoming Court for my freshman year. Furthermore, I really love my teachers and coaches who invest their time in me to help me succeed. Finally, the small classes at SCA create a tight class community that has shaped my high school experience with much joy and lasting friendships.
Q: What advice would you give to someone entering high school at SCA?
A: I would tell someone entering SCA to use their time wisely during study halls and after school to get their homework done so that they do not miss out on making great memories with their friends at sporting events or church. I would also recommend they stretch themselves into new activities they may never have considered doing before. Trying new things, such as cross country, golf, literary competitions, mock trial, and chess, were opportunities SCA afforded me and a lot of my growth as a person was spawned in these activities. Go out and do!
Q: What makes a person a good friend?
A: A good friend is someone who is easy to be around, pushes you to be the best you can be, and never allows you to settle for less than you are capable of being. A good friend is someone you enjoy spending time with.
Q: What makes someone a good student or a good learner?
A: A good student is someone who values education and understands the importance of knowledge and wisdom. A good student is someone who puts in the work to get better every day, even when they are tired. Discipline creates the results that come from the extra effort it takes to achieve a good education. A good learner is happy to work.
Q: What is your favorite Bible verse?
A: “Learn to do what is good. Pursue justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow’s cause” (Isaiah 1:17, CSB).
My favorite thing about SCA is all the opportunities to compete and make memories with my friends. “ “

It doesn’t take long after meeting SCA Headmaster Kenneth Roberts, Jr., to notice that he’s a dedicated, humble, servant-hearted leader and mentor on the basketball court, in the community, and as the headmaster of Sherwood Christian Academy.
Mr. Roberts has more than 25 years of education experience, including headmaster at Shiloh Christian Academy and assistant headmaster at Piedmont Academy. He was awarded Teacher of the Year for the Lamar County School System. He earned his master’s degree from Walden University and an Ed.S. from Valdosta State University.
Originally from Barnesville, Georgia, the Roberts family of eight landed in Southwest Georgia at Lee County Schools, and a series of God-ordained meetings and events led him to teach and coach at SCA. His roles over his years
at SCA have included Bible teacher, basketball coach, football coach, high school and middle school principal, and assistant headmaster, up until January 2023, when he stepped into the role of headmaster.
But why the interest in Christian education?
As the father of two SCA alums and four children currently enrolled, Mr. Roberts says he could speak for a long time on why he appreciates SCA and Christian education. His highlights include “biblical instruction every day, the influence of godly men and women in everyday decisions, opportunities to develop well-rounded lives with activities such as One Act play, musicals, and championship-level athletics for grades third through 12th.”
As SCA’s headmaster, Mr. Roberts has influence on not only students, but also
teachers and staff. He leads weekly faculty Bible studies in addition to his regular duties serving SCA staff and faculty. He said, “It is important to me that our faculty and staff are affirmed and encouraged regularly. If there is nothing to affirm or be encouraging about, I will take responsibility for that.”
His life verse is Matthew 6:33, and he applies it to all aspects of his life, including his leadership at SCA.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33, ESV).
“At SCA, we wholeheartedly believe if we honor the Lord in all that we do and continue to submit everything to the Lord in prayer, He will provide all our needs,” Mr. Roberts said.
A tangible example of Mr. Roberts’ uplifting
and inspiring leadership was shared at SCA’s 2023 Catalyst Sports Awards Ceremony. While receiving the award for best coach in his role as interim head football coach of the 2022
state championship-winning season, Coach Roberts mentioned in his acceptance speech that he encouraged his assistant coaches to offer positive encouragement to their athletes at least 10 times before sharing any critique. This certainly had a profound impact on our varsity football athletes in their championship season. Imagine the significance and positive response if every coach and teacher in our community adopted this approach!
Mr. Roberts’ ability to lead others to their greatest potential didn’t happen overnight. God planted a desire to teach and coach in his heart as a sophomore in high school. A teenage Kenny Roberts witnessed his high school basketball coaches, Gerry Kosater and Jim Massey, building confidence and growth in everyone under their care through encouragement and accountability.
“They both inspired me to love students while also teaching them things that will impact their adult life,” Mr. Roberts said. “In fact, Coach Kosater became the headmaster of my alma mater and eventually my first boss in education. He was inspirational and encouraging as a leader of adults as well. Later, after accepting Christ in my 20s, I realized the most impactful way to reach students was with the gospel and the teachings of Scripture. As I grew in Christ, so did my desire to be an example of a godly man, coach, father, and husband.”
Continuing the same affirmative legacy of godly mentorship he received from his mentors, Coach Roberts’ positive influence with his players and students extends far beyond the field, the office, and his time leading secondary chapel services. His impact builds with each interaction with him in the hallway as he remembers every student’s name, the moments he stops during chapel or a staff meeting to pray for a need, his visits to the hospital to minister to a school family during a difficult time, and his time spent pouring wisdom into students.
Mr. Roberts not only leads SCA with excellence, but also serves in several roles that impact the community, such as being a Sunday school teacher for high school seniors, offering basketball clinics for young athletes, and serving as a godly mentor to many.
“I believe that every adult will have an impact on those around them,” Mr. Roberts said. “I want the impact that I have to be not only positive, but distinctively godly. If every young man or young lady that is placed under my care is pointed back to Christ, then I will consider myself a success. The only way young men and women know how to live a life with and for Christ is through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and those whom God sends to them as leaders.”
The future is bright at SCA, and we’re grateful for the leadership of Mr. Kenny Roberts!
At SCA, we wholeheartedly believe if we honor the Lord in all we do and continue to submit everything to the Lord in prayer, He will provide all our needs. “ “
This year, SCA fine arts students took center stage to not only showcase their talent, but also lead and mentor their fellow performers in SCA’s productions!
In fall 2023, the One Act team was not able to compete with the play initially chosen because they were limited by copyright to alter the content that would have been unfitting to our school standards and dishonoring to the Lord. So the team had a choice: either forgo the competition or come up with a new title to perform. The students chose a new piece, cast the show, and largely self-directed the play, along with the help of Jessica Albano, SCA alumna. They pushed hard to continue even though they were only five weeks out from competition, showing perseverance, passion, dedication, and enthusiasm for their art. The audiences laughed hard at their new selection, The Importance of Being Earnest, and the actors were blessed to take first place at the One Act GAPPS state competition in the fall!
Several of the numbers from the SCA Fine Arts department’s big spring musical, Music Man, were choreographed and led by upperclassmen.
Senior Hannah Albano choreographed and taught “Marian the Librarian,” junior Cooper Powers choreographed “76 Trombones,” and senior Caden Thomas acted as dance captain, coaching many of the dance and musical numbers. These students showed their creativity and peer leadership skills through the way they patiently conducted rehearsals and taught their classmates the moves, even while they were under pressure to perfect their own performances. There was also a strong student team behind the scenes creating the props and set dressing for the show.
In March 2024, high school fine arts students acted along with middle schoolers in their production of Anne of Green Gables, as well as helped behind the scenes. It was an opportunity for the high schoolers to pour into the middle schoolers as well as inspire them to continue in their passion for theater.
Our 4th and 5th graders leapt high in their production of A Year with Frog and Toad, Jr.
Meet Olivia Keith — class president, stellar athlete, ballerina, and rising junior at SCA with goals to become a physician and go into orthopedic medicine!
Q: Do you have goals or visions for what you’d like to do when you graduate from SCA?
A: The vision I have for myself after I graduate is, if at all possible, to play basketball in college for a few years, if — and only if — time and energy permit. As it has been my forever dream, I’d love to become a physician. My interests include orthopedics, orthodontics, and osteopathic medicine. In college, engaging myself with internships in both collegiate and professional sports is one pathway I’d love to pursue. After my years in college, having my own medical practice seems ideal to me.
Q: What’s a favorite memory or moment of high school so far?
A: One of my favorite memories in high school so far was last year when I won Homecoming Court for my freshman year. The people I was surrounded with were nothing but supportive and congratulatory of my crowning. The entire Homecoming experience was a delight! From being behind the scenes working with student council to pulling Homecoming night off to riding in a canary-yellow Corvette with my dad, the night was very special, as I shared it with my family, friends, and acquaintances.
Q: What are your extracurricular activities and leadership roles at SCA?
A: Extracurricular Activities:
• Varsity girls basketball
• Varsity girls track and field
• Amateur Athletic Union basketball
• Dance (ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary)
Leadership Roles:

Q: Have you been in any internships or do you have future internships planned?
A:• Summer Health and STEM Academy (hosted by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Albany State University): My ASU internship was filled with exposure to various fields of medicine and engaging in each branch’s activities and work-like experience. Due to my age, my internships will significantly increase in my field of interest.
UPCOMING:
• Middle Georgia HOBY Youth Leadership seminar
• Congress of Future Medical Leaders (UMass Lowell)
Q: What motivates you to do your best in life and in academics/athletics/activities?
A: God gets all the glory for how I present myself. His grace is the reason for my achievements. Knowing I have Jesus on my side, I can’t lose in life, so there’s no reason not to try new activities and seize the moment.
Q: What are you most looking forward to over the next couple years of high school?
A: Since I have two years left in high school, I’m eager to enter AP classes while starting college early and finishing top of my class. Athletically, however, I am ready to win another state title for track and bring one home for basketball.
Q: What is your favorite thing about SCA?
A: My favorite thing about SCA is the personalization and connection between the teachers and students. My other favorite thing about SCA is Snack Attack (snack break for 6th12th grades)! It is available for a brain break and socialization, which is vital, as well as food to power us students through the day.
Q: What advice would you give to someone entering high school at SCA?
A: Drop all expectations of what you may think this school does or doesn’t have to offer. Come into our high school with an open mind and just be the student you are, because the only way to get the full experience of Sherwood is by being who you truly are, not who you’re trying to be.
Q: What is your favorite sport to participate in? What other sports do you play?
A: My favorite sport to participate in is basketball. In basketball, my main position is point guard and shooting guard. However, since I’m a very aggressive player, I prefer positionless basketball and like to play the entire court. Besides school ball, I run track
and participate in AAU basketball during the summer. In addition to these activities, I participate in dance, which consists of ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, and some pointe.
Q: What makes a person a good friend?
A: A lesson commonly learned in this adolescent stage is how many true “friends” one has. It becomes very apparent who is a friend rather than simply an acquaintance. A good friend is one who holds their friend up to their standards, pushes them when they’re down, and supports them through thick and thin. They’re authentic and genuine, which allows the relationship not to be one sided. Good friends remind one another of how far they have come and where they are going. They are two people who “do life” together and are happy for one another regarding their achievements and successes. It’s someone who holds their friend’s deepest secrets and always has an open ear. Good friends not only respect one another, but learn from each other in how they live their lives.
Q: What makes someone a good student or a good learner?
A: A good student or a good learner is someone who is willing to learn and asks questions to further expand their knowledge. However, there is no stereotype or condition every student must fit in order to be considered a “good student” or “good learner.” The qualities each person presents are different. This type of student would be one who is engaged with the teacher and studies diligently to remain ahead in their work. A good learner is one who questions why something is the way it is and digs deeper than what is extended to them. These kinds of students come in various shapes and forms. Everyone has their forte in life, and the way they choose to express themselves is unique.
Q: What is your favorite Bible verse or life verse?
A: One of my favorite verses, as it applies to life and my plans in general, is Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established” (ESV). As I have big expectations for myself and my success, I often have to remind myself to stay in God’s will because it is better to remain in God’s will than venture out and wander like a vagabond.
God gets all the glory for how I present myself. His grace is the reason for my achievements. “ “

In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, the playwright states, “If we do meet again, we’ll smile indeed; If not, ‘tis true this parting was well made’” (5.1.128-129). One classroom where students are sure to be met with a smile is Mrs. Dawne Beck’s high school English classes.
“Mrs. Beck is the type of teacher who is gracious, outgoing, and understanding. She tries to do her best to relate to her students in beyond personal ways and brings it all together with a bow of God’s Word,” said student Olivia Keith.
With a Master of Arts in Teaching Languages, certifications in both English and Spanish, as well as training from Classical Conversations, Mrs. Beck is a highly skilled teacher who has been associated with SCA since she began attending as a freshman in high school, later working in the STAR program during college. After graduating from college, she taught Spanish at SCA from 1996 to 2007 until her family moved to Texas for a ministry position. During her time at SCA, she participated in the school’s first mission trip to Honduras, later serving on numerous medical mission trips to Honduras and Guatemala. She also led SCA’s first European trip in 2003 when she took students to Spain.
Returning to SCA in 2021 to teach English and writing, Mrs. Beck continues to impact students with her love of learning and focus on interpreting literature and life through the lens of God’s Word. Providing more than just content knowledge, she works hard to make her classroom relevant to students’ lives every day. For example, while reading the dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 with her 10th graders, you might find her discussing artificial intelligence and the necessity of cultivating real relationships. Also, while reading Night by Elie Wiesel with the ninth graders, students may be writing haiku or creating book trailers to grapple with the tragedy of genocide.
You’ll often find her students composing by hand as they learn to improve their writing skills through outlining, drafting, and redrafting before typing their papers. Or they might be playing a game as they work on vocabulary, punctuation, or parts of speech. You may also find them reading Romeo and Juliet outside or acting out Greek tragedies in full costumes in her room. She’ll do whatever it takes to engage students in reading, writing, and understanding their world with a biblical worldview as they consider the implications of the literature they read.
Interestingly, you never know what Mrs. Beck’s class might be doing on any given day, because she seeks to customize learning based on individual student needs while balancing the demands of a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. However, you do know that students will be challenged, engaged, and active participants in class — often presenting and discussing issues as she works to improve their critical thinking skills. Perhaps this is why her students describe her as kind, funny, interesting, interactive, inclusive, and creative.
Even more than academic excellence, she’s committed to reaching every student with their unique interests and through the many modalities of learning. You’ll often find her room full of students getting extra help throughout the day. One of the best things heard from her classroom last year was a young man finishing up a paper who exclaimed, “Mrs. Beck, I didn’t know I could write like this!” She’s committed to helping improve student writing as part of the SCA Writing Project implemented over the past five years.
In her personal life, Mrs. Beck is married to Keith Beck and is the daughter of retired pastor Neal Hager and SCA elementary principal, Mrs. Sylvia Hager. She has three children: Charis Beck, who graduated from SCA in 2023; Selah Beck, a rising senior; and Eliana Beck, a rising freshman.
“ “
Mrs. Beck’s love for reading and writing... is contagious and helps everyone achieve more through her class.
Perhaps the greatest thing about Mrs. Beck is how she loves people. When you talk to her, she looks you in the eye, quietly listens, and thinks before she responds. Her empathy and connection with students make her a talented, relatable teacher. Furthermore, her love of Jesus and deep biblical knowledge bring a Christian worldview and insight to everything she teaches. Mrs. Beck’s love of reading and writing combined with a love for Jesus Christ is contagious and helps everyone achieve more through her class.
Her student Kyra Bevel summed it up well when she said, “Mrs. Beck is one of my favorite teachers. I look forward to her class every day and hate when her class is over. She has helped me grow in my love of the Lord and of reading. Mrs. Beck has increased my love for English, and I don’t think I could have made it through this school year without her.”
Truly she seeks to create lasting, Christ-centered relationships in her classroom so that even on days when students enter without a smile, they’re sure to leave with one.
