ultiple fatalities renewed urgency around vaccination and public health awareness. The 2025 measles outbreak in the Southwest has become the worst in decades with over 1 000 cases and several deaths Originating in Gaines County, Texas an area with low vaccination rates the virus has spread to nearby states and was linked to international travel through Denver International Airport U S Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. faced backlash for initially downplaying the outbreak and making misleading claims about vaccine effectiveness Though he later supported vaccination in an op-ed, his early promotion of alternative remedies like vitamin A supplements raised concerns The federal response has been further hindered by budget cuts and the closure of vaccination clinics, reducing access to the highly effective MMR vaccine. Public health officials stress the need to boost vaccination rates to 95% to prevent further spread The outbreak highlights the dangers of misinformation and the importance of strong public health infrastructure

n 2025, NOAA and FEMA faced major budget cuts and staffing shortages, leaving key offices critically understaffed just as hurricane season begins The National Hurricane Center and multiple Weather Service offices lack essential personnel, raising concerns about the agencies’ ability to issue timely forecasts FEMA’s leadership and reduced disaster response programs have further weakened national preparedness for climate-related emergencies

alifornia wildfires, deadly tornadoes, and record-low temperatures challenge scientific and emergency response systems In early 2025 the U S faced extreme weather: deadly California wildfires a record-breaking tornado outbreak and drastic temperature swings from historic cold to extreme heat These events strained emergency systems and highlighted the urgent need for improved climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and public infrastructure to handle intensifying environmental threats

As the Founder and Publisher, I am beyond honored to open these pages to voices often silenced, stories waiting to be told, and realities reshaped by the courage of survivors, the wisdom of educators, the soul of artists, and the prayers of the faithful.

In a time where headlines shout confusion and division, this publication offers clarity and connection. From the heartbreak of public health crises like the 2025 measles outbreak to the resilience demanded by historic wildfires and devastating tornadoes, we explore how our communities rise again and again. We speak truth to power, unpacking court rulings like the federal overturning of sweeping tariffs, immigration crackdowns affecting our scholars and students, and cuts to disaster agencies like FEMA and NOAA that place the most vulnerable at greater risk. Yet, even in this, we see sparks of light of advocacy, action, and revival.

Inspired by the soulful dialogues of Shernita's Coffee Shop Talk, this magazine pours from the cup of real talk and divine purpose. Within these pages, you’ll discover spiritual awakenings, healing circles, and the voices of everyday heroes survivors of trauma who now stand tall, educators molding minds for justice, and leaders lighting the way for a truer democracy.

We celebrate the rhythm of our resilience through the arts You’ll find reflections on groundbreaking Black and Brown films, music festivals that honor our joy, and TV premieres that finally show our truth. JERMAINE

W I L L I A M S

CINEMATIC HEALING:

JERMAINE WILLIAMS AND THE THERAPY OF TRUTH-TELLING

The mental health therapist, activist, music artist, and filmmaker doesn’t create for applause. He creates to heal for himself and the community that raised him. With a story that threads through pain, resilience, and divine purpose, Jermaine opens the door to a deeper understanding of what it means to be whole, even when broken.

"For me, filmmaking is therapy. It’s how I process pain, loss, love, and growth. I’ve lived through some heavy things addiction, grief, being misunderstood and telling stories helped me make sense of it all When people see my work and say, 'That felt like me,' that’s the healing. It reminds us we’re not alone in the struggle."

Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Jermaine never turned a blind eye to the beauty and brokenness around him. "I got tired of waiting for change, so I decided to tell stories that forced the conversation. Stories have the power to make people feel seen, and when you feel seen, you start to believe change is possible."

He wears many hats advocate, mentor, storyteller and he wears them with grace, even when it feels heavy. "Some days I don’t balance it all. But I’ve learned to give myself grace. I keep a small circle that checks me when I’m running on fumes. I can’t pour into others if I’m empty."

His film “A Cross in Time” became a turning point. "It’s about a broken man finding purpose through faith. That was me. Writing and directing it felt like laying my soul bare. It forced me to confront wounds I hadn’t fully healed, and in the process, it helped others face theirs too."

His work is often misunderstood. "People think I’m just trying to make movies. But it’s deeper than that. I’m building a legacy. I want to spark conversations, shift perspectives, and open doors for the next generation of storytellers. This ain’t just about film it’s about freedom."

Programs like Lens of Hope reflect that commitment. "I want youth to realize their story matters. That pain can be fuel, not a death sentence. My hope is they go further than I ever will."

His mental health work helps him guard his own soul while telling hard truths. "If a story’s too fresh, I wait. I talk to my therapist, I pray, and I set boundaries. Every story ain’t mine to carry." Faith anchors everything he creates "Even when I was deep in addiction, I knew God wasn’t done with me. Now, every story I write carries a piece of that redemption."

To his younger self? "Stop doubting yourself. Take the long road. That pain you’re running from? It’ll set you apart. Keep going. God’s got a plan."

And his legacy? "I want folks to say, 'He made us feel something He told the truth And he gave people a shot when no one else would.'" Jermaine Williams is not just making films. He’s making room—for healing, for voices, for hope.

CONCLUSION: REFLECTIONS ON THE JOURNEY

Jermaine’s story is not just his own it’s all of ours. His truth reminds us that healing is possible, purpose is reachable, and your past doesn’t disqualify your future. The courage to create, to speak, to care especially as a Black man navigating grief, growth, and grace cannot be overstated. In a society that often silences male vulnerability, Jermaine’s voice is both balm and blueprint.

Mental health among men is a silent crisis. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, men die by suicide nearly 4 times more often than women. The stigma surrounding mental health, especially for men of color, keeps many in silence. But Jermaine’s life says otherwise: your story matters. Your healing matters.

His work, faith, and fire stand as testimony that pain isn’t the period it’s the process. You can survive. You can rise. You can create light from your darkest places. Let Jermaine’s journey be your reminder: it’s never too late to begin again, and never too early to believe that your dreams still have breath.

--VERYWELL MIND

These statistics emphasize the importance of breaking the stigma especially for men of color by creating safe spaces to heal and share. Jermaine Williams’s story and advocacy through therapy, creativity, and community mentorship are a powerful counterpoint to this epidemic. He shows us that vulnerability and love can be revolutionary and that every voice matters.

SURVIVING THE FLAMES

Before I lost my mother, I had already lost parts of my innocence. As a child, I endured the trauma of molestation silent wounds that I carried with me through every stage of life. Then, on July 24, 1976, the unimaginable happened my mother, Hattie, was murdered. That day shattered me. But it did not end me.

Through it all abuse, bullying, betrayal in marriage, domestic violence, suicide attempts God held me together. My faith in Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit became the anchor I clung to. Through Him, I learned how to forgive what seemed unforgivable. I learned how to show love even after being broken, and how to rise each day with purpose.

SMOKEY MOUNTAIN WOMEN’S RETREAT, TN

TURNED MY PAIN INTO PURPOSE

I learned affection from my mother and strength from the discipline I witnessed. I learned to honor my husband without diminishing him, even when I felt diminished. And I learned to mother with grace despite the storm—raising three beautiful children: Stephon, my eldest, CJ, my “bonus baby boy,” and my daughter Hatiara, lovingly called Tia. They are my crown. I now have ten grandchildren, with two more growing in the womb of their wives each a reminder that God restores. In a retreat in May, I wrote a note to God about all of the things I wanted Him to do or remove in my life, I put it into a seashell and cast it into the ocean. I spoke to my mountains, and Yeshua has already been moving them out of my way.

To every reader man, woman, or teen you can make it. Find your tribe and lean on them.

THE LOST SON FINDS ITS STAGE: A JOURNEY OF REDEMPTION WITH LEN GIBSON

When you sit down with Len Gibson, founder of GO Media Productions, you ’ re not just talking to a producer you ’ re sitting across from a man of vision, faith, and resilience As we discussed The Lost Son stage play, his voice carried the weight of both passion and purpose What began as a script passed along in faith became a movement of healing, music, and transformation one that’s now touching lives across the South.

TheSeedWasPlantedinFaith

“The story of The Lost Son actually started over a decade ago, ” Len shared “The playwright, Mrs Sheron Weston, reached out to me about thirteen years ago. The timing just wasn’t right back then, but even then I knew. I saw her gift. I felt it.”

Fast forward to Thanksgiving 2024, and the seed was watered again “She came back and said, ‘Len, I want to really do this’ So I took it to prayer I brought in my GO Media Productions team, and from there it just blossomed What inspired me most was the realness of the story. It’s rooted in the Prodigal Son, sure, but this version… it’s modern. It’s raw. It’s necessary. ”

This play is currently seeking cities ready to showcase this talent and share its truths Contact GO Media Productions if you ’ re interested len@gomediaproductions

When asked about his first impression of the script, Len didn’t hesitate “It made me realize something powerful there are millions of lost sons and daughters out there People are walking around wounded, disconnected, but still deeply loved. This story hits home for so many. ”

His relationship with the writer brought something extra to the table.

“I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to build with people I trust That connection made the creative process honest and collaborative There was trust in the room, and that’s rare. ”

ChoosingtheRightDirector

Producing a play of this magnitude takes more than just faith it takes the right people in the right roles Enter Carl Gilliard

“We needed a director who had heart, who understood the assignment spiritually and artistically,” Len explained. “Carl stood out because of his experience in both theater and film. He’s not only a talented actor himself, but his ability to manage chaos with calm and work with such a wide range of talent that’s what made him perfect”

So what does Len want audiences to take away after seeing The Lost Son?

“That God can do anything,” he said. “Keep the faith. Don’t give up on your loved ones. It may not be your child it could be a parent, a friend, a neighbor. Keep loving them. Keep praying. God will do the rest.”

TheMessageThatMatters

This isn’t just a play It’s ministry “Our goal is simple,” Len said, his voice growing more serious “We want lives changed We want families to be restored. If even one soul is saved… if one broken family finds their way back to the table, we ’ ve done what God called us to do.”

When asked about his first impression of the script, Len didn’t hesitate “It made me realize something powerful there are millions of lost sons and daughters out there People are walking around wounded, disconnected, but still deeply loved. This story hits home for so many. ” His relationship with the writer brought something extra to the table.

“I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to build with people I trust That connection made the creative process honest and collaborative There was trust in the room, and that’s rare. ”

TheRoadAhead

With a few dates already in motion, Len’s vision doesn’t stop here.

“Our goal is to take The Lost Son on tour throughout the Southeast,” he said. “We’re believing for sponsors and investors to walk with us. The support we’ve gotten so far has been amazing, and we’re not done. We’re expecting a 12 to 18-month run, God willing”

Len Gibson is a man of faith, creativity, and endurance and with The Lost Son, he’s helping bring something bigger than entertainment to the stage. He’s ushering in healing. One story, one city, one soul at a time.

"FROM MY HEART TO THE STAGE: A FATHER'S REDEMPTION JOURNEY"

AN INTERVIEW WITH EARNEST PUGH

Earnest Pugh is a 5x #1 Billboard Gospel artist, known for his powerful vocals and inspirational songs. He's a 20-year veteran in the gospel music industry, and his notable hits include "Rain on Us" and "I Need Your Glory".

When I was offered the role of Mr. Davis in “The Lost Son,” I knew immediately this wasn’t just another part to play. It was confirmation from God. As a father of two sons in real life, walking beside them through life's twists and turns, this story felt deeply personal In fact, I was in the thick of a situation with one of my own children when the opportunity came It was as if God was handing me a script from heaven one that mirrored the very pages of my life.

Preparing for the role didn’t require acting so much as it required remembering. Emotionally and spiritually, it was second nature because I was already living it offering counsel, being that steady voice in times of marital storms and emotional breakdowns Every conversation I’d had recently with my own sons became fuel for how I portrayed Mr Davis, a father trying to love, guide, and restore two very different sons just like mine.

Faith was my compass. I leaned into the countless victories God has brought us through the ones that looked impossible until He stepped in right on time As parents, we’ve all had moments where it seems our children have drifted too far but then God shows up He vindicates, He redeems, He restores That faith that hope is what I brought to the stage

There was one moment in the play that stopped my heart in its tracks. Our incredible director, Carl Gilliard, inserted a line where my son John, in speaking

to his Heavenly Father, says to let his earthly father know that he was coming home Whew That hit me hard Because it’s in those dark moments when our children are lost that the Heavenly Father and earthly father talk the most. It’s when we go to the throne of grace that God whispers, “I’ve got him.” And suddenly, peace replaces panic.

My goal in this role was simple: make Mr Davis come alive with the depth, struggle, and hope of a real father

A man balancing old-school parenting with today’s reality where listening is as important as leading. Where being a voice of reason doesn’t mean silencing your child, but guiding them with love and discernment. My prayer is that audiences felt that felt the tension, the faith, and the unshakable love of a father doing his best

Working with Carl Gilliard was a blessing Watching him, an actor himself, direct with precision and heart was nothing short of inspiring. He knew exactly what to pull out of each scene, and made the journey feel like family. Under his leadership, we didn’t just rehearse we transformed

And that’s what The Lost Son is about: transformation Redemption. The homefront the family is the gift that keeps on giving. No matter how far our children roam, love leaves the door open. Always.

This experience reignited my own creative fire. I’m currently working on a docu-series titled A Song in the Night, sharing my story in both ministry and the entertainment industry And this role was another piece of that beautiful, unfolding journey

Interestingly, this fatherly role isn’t new to me anymore From Love Mountain to Valleys, I’ve watched my character evolution shift from the brother role to the father. And you know what? I embrace it. Because there’s a unique strength in fatherhood that deserves to be seen not just the disciplinarian, but the nurturer, the counselor, the big brother when needed. We’re more than just a stern voice We’re protectors with purpose and listeners with love

To anyone stepping into the shoes of a father onstage or off bring your full self Lead with grace, negotiate with wisdom, and always listen first. Today’s father needs more than just authority he needs heart, healing, and humility.

And if I had to sum up The Lost Son in one word? Redeeming.

FROM PRODIGAL TO PURPOSE: CARL GILLIARD BREATHES LIFE INTO THE LOST SON

When veteran actor and director Carl Gilliard was approached by longtime friends Len Gibson and Wayne Overstreet to helm the stage production of *The Lost Son*, he didn’t hesitate. 'I was drawn by the subject matter,' Gilliard reflects. 'The Prodigal Son is one of my favorite stories in The Bible That, and the opportunity to work with Len and Wayne we had a dream team Truly a blessing '

Meeting playwright Sheron Weston only deepened his commitment. The story’s raw spiritual truth aligned perfectly with Gilliard’s faith-driven artistry.

'I’ve directed theater before, but this opportunity was different I knew I could contribute something powerful I jumped on it '

From a director’s standpoint, Gilliard immediately began shaping the emotional heartbeat of *The Lost Son*. 'I wanted it to move with purpose. It had to be entertaining but it also had to minister,' he explains 'Thankfully, we had a gifted cast and the singers ALL roof-raisers That made my job easy '

Gilliard’s approach to directing is grounded in authenticity 'My job is to help actors find their truth If we don’t believe it, the audience won’t either I don’t over-direct I help them connect to their own experiences and then let them fly. It’s magical to watch.'

His goal was to create a tone that invited the audience into the story without pretense. 'When an audience pays for a ticket, we owe them a journey. We set the tone early and invite them to come along '

Guiding the cast was a lesson in trust and faith. 'We didn’t have a lot of rehearsal time, but I trusted God and the actors. They showed up, ready and open. I just helped shape what was already beautiful.' One of the most powerful moments came during the performance of the climactic number, 'God Did It.' 'That scene watching the Lost Son return home after everything the audience had witnessed it had to be high energy. It had to feel like victory. And it did.'

Gilliard speaks candidly about the challenges 'Scheduling was tight But communication, prayer, and a shared purpose made it work Everyone on the team had heart.'

For Gilliard, the core message of *The Lost Son* is timeless: 'It’s never too late to come home. God forgives and restores. Start by forgiving yourself.' Looking ahead, Carl Gilliard is busy as ever He’s rebranding his series *Black Famous*, appearing in the new *Naked Gun* film with Liam Neeson, teaching his Atlanta-based acting class, and developing new projects with the same heart and vision that shaped *The Lost Son*. His advice for aspiring directors? 'Be open to serve. Be open to learn. Find mentors. Read. Attend plays. And most importantly start.'

Carl Gilliard is a dynamic force in the entertainment industry, hailing from Chicago/Detroit. A veteran actor, director, producer, and marketer, Carl has captivated audiences on stage and screen with his signature baritone voice and powerful presence. His credits include standout roles in Inception, “Coach Carter”, “Red Eye”, “Contact”, “House M.D.”, and “24”. As a producer and director, Carl has developed awardwinning films like “Retiring Tatiana” and “Section 8”, and impactful stage plays including “Steel Magnolias” and “The Things That Make Men Cry.”

With a background in sales and advertising at Variety and the L.A. Times, Carl brings sharp business insight to creative storytelling. He currently partners with the legendary Bill Duke on projects such as Black Diamonds and the Duke Media Youth Bootcamp, which empowers youth through media and financial literacy. Carl Gilliard continues to inspire, lead, and shape the future of entertainment with purpose and heart.

“RETURN TO GLORY: A PRODIGAL’S JOURNEY FROM THE STAGE TO THE SOUL”

In the powerful and soul-stirring stage play The Lost Son, audiences are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions through laughter, tears, conviction, and healing. Inspired by the timeless parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32), this modern retelling speaks directly to today’s generation. At the center of the story is John, the youngest son, played with passion and depth, who loses himself in a world of destructive indulgence His fall is deep, but so is his redemption.

Ernest Pugh, portraying the compassionate and unwavering father, delivers vocal performances that truly take the audience to church, ushering in healing with every note Chris Blue and Paris Bennett light up the stage with compelling performances, while Tony Grant's portrayal of a troubled neighborhood drug kingpin adds grit and realism. His character’s downfall was not only believable, it was sobering.

Dr Sean Cook, as the older brother of John, masterfully shows the slow-burning tension of jealousy and judgment until, in a moment of grace, he offers forgiveness. It’s a heartfelt reminder of the power of mercy and reconciliation.

The brilliance of this production rests in the hands of writer Sheron Weston, whose creativity masterfully wove a familiar scripture into a dramatic masterpiece that captivates modern audiences. Director Carl Gilliard brought that vision to life with cinematic finesse and heartfelt precision, using every member of this dynamic cast to their fullest.

The Lost Son is more than a play It’s a ministry It’s a message It’s a miracle for every heart still finding its way home.

LEGACY IN MOTION:

SATIE GOSSETT ON CARRYING THE TORCH OF HOLLYWOOD TRAILBLAZER, LOUIS GOSSETT, JR. .

Satie Gossett

Legacy Upbringing

Growing up under the powerful shadow of a man revered by the world is both a blessing and a burden. For Satie Gossett, son of the iconic Louis Gossett Jr., that legacy began to take shape early and unexpectedly in a moment of childhood wonder.

“The most prominent memory is when I went to the Oscars with him and he won. I was about 8 years old. The next day, half of the school wanted to be friends with me.”

That golden night may have introduced young Satie to his father’s global stature, but it was the intimate moments at home that revealed the man behind the legacy.

“At home, he liked to relax, watch westerns, basketball, entertain friends, and family. He always liked to have family around.”

From early on, Louis Gossett Jr. laid a foundation rooted in humility, faith, and discipline. His father, Louis Gossett, Jr., laid the foundation rooted in moral and leadership.

“He told me to always treat people with respect. Put God first and work hard at whatever you do.”

It was his father’s resilience during the filming of Enemy Mine spending grueling hours in heavy prosthetics that filled Satie with admiration.

“It took eight hours to take on and off… what he endured for that role made me most proud to be his son.”

Yet with recognition of his famous father, there came assumptions that he didn’t need to spread his own wings. Satie shares these words:

“His influence helped me get my first couple of jobs in Hollywood. But there was also an assumption why do I need to work independently when I could just work for my father?”

The Weight and Wisdom of Legacy

Louis Gossett Jr didn’t just act he acted with purpose Every gesture, every word, every public moment carried weight because he knew eyes were watching especially the eyes of Black America

“He was always aware that the Black community was watching him every picture, every handshake had a positive ripple effect.”

This awareness became Satie’s moral compass, guided by one enduring phrase: “School is never out.”

A mantra that still echoes as Satie teaches the next generation and walks his own creative path. For Louis, success was never measured in accolades it was measured in legacy.

“His definition of success was legacy… that his life and work would be remembered.”

Few roles captured his essence more than his portrayal of Fiddler in Roots, a performance that did more than entertain it educated, uplifted, and empowered.

“He led and told slaves and the audience what they needed to do in order to survive… he did the same in real life.”

Louis was also deeply connected to his heritage, tracing his roots to the Mende tribe of Africa and Cherokee ancestry, and instilled in Satie a pride in where he came from.

“He felt it was important to understand your roots… and represent it to the fullest.”

Though he walks his own path as a writer and director, Satie acknowledges that the legacy opens doors but it’s his talent that earns the respect.

“The legacy will get people to pay attention to my work. My talent will get people to stay.”

According to Satie, his father, Louis Gossett, Jr. wanted future generations to remember that “He broke down a lot of barriers of diversity in Hollywood. That he made sacrifices so others could thrive.”

And if alive today, Louis would still be fighting injustice through his passion project:

Personal & Untold Stories

Beyond the accolades, there was a man of quiet strength, unshakable hope, and complex struggles.

“He met Nelson Mandela when he got out of prison. My father was in turmoil with his status in Hollywood… but seeing how Mandela endured changed his mindset.”

Louis’ spirit continues to push Satie today, especially as he works on a documentary his father requested before passing.

“A month before he passed, he asked me to tell his story. I carry that with me.”

Behind the public poise was a man who faced and overcame addiction. His recovery became a light to others. “He struggled with addiction for a long time… He would’ve been 20 years sober last July. He helped people with his experience, strength, and hope.”

There’s one letter Satie still longs to find.

“He said he wrote me a letter… I haven’t found it. I’d tell him I hope the work I do makes him proud.”

Many never saw Louis’s sensitive side, nor knew of his musical talents that might have rivaled legends like Bill Withers or Al Green. “He was a sensitive man… but God had other plans.”

Vision Going Forward

“The Eracism Foundation was his conduit to fight for a world without racism.”

As the next chapter of the Gossett story unfolds, Satie is not chasing his father’s impact he’s pursuing purpose. “I just want to do the best work I possibly can.

I’m not in charge of the results.”

His mentorship work with youth in urban areas hints at how he might build his own version of Eracism possibly through recovery work or creative education. “I teach video production to children in urban areas… or maybe something around rehab and recovery.”

At the center of it all is a hope that the documentary becomes a global mirror reflecting his father’s full humanity. “Hopefully the documentary tells people globally who my father was in his totality.”

In five to ten years, Satie sees himself further down the creative path, with a greater impact as a filmmaker and storyteller. When asked to define his father’s legacy in one word, his answer is powerful and poetic: “Equalizer. Not like Denzel beating up bad guys, but leveling the playing field for people of color to equally express their voices in cinema and beyond.”

And so the story continues not as an imitation, but as an evolution. Not in his father’s shadow, but in his light.

As the next chapter of the Gossett story unfolds, Satie is not chasing his father’s impact he’s pursuing purpose. “I just want to do the best work I possibly can

In 1983, Louis Gossett Jr. made history as the first African American man to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming only the second Black actor ever to win an Academy Award for acting. (with son, Satie)

Legacy in Motion: The Living Tapestry of Louis Gossett Jr.

Some actors entertain.

Others transform.

And then, there is Louis Gossett Jr. a man whose life and work have not only shaped cinema but have touched the soul of a nation

From the moment he first stepped onto a stage, Gossett became more than a performer He became a vessel carrying generations of truth, resilience, and artistry in every role His journey began in the golden age of stage and screen but was never confined by the limits of time, type, or tradition His performances didn’t just move audiences they awakened them

It was his powerful portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) that earned Gossett an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor a historic first for a Black man in that category But Louis didn’t stop there He followed that moment with a legacy-defining turn as Fiddler in the iconic miniseries Roots (1977), a performance that earned him an Emmy and carved a place in American cultural history that no one can erase

With more than 400 film and television credits, Gossett is a master storyteller He’s brought grit to Iron Eagle, wisdom to A Raisin in the Sun, raw emotion to Enemy Mine, and soul to Lackawanna Blues He’s journeyed from the skies of Jaws 3-D to the spiritual depth of Watchmen, and from blockbuster fame to deeply human, independent films that have stirred the hearts of critics and communities alike

But Louis Gossett Jr isn’t just a name on a marquee He is a movement an artist who has challenged the industry to open doors, and inspired generations to walk through them with purpose His legacy is a living force One that continues to call us higher To feel deeper To think critically To love more fully

In an industry that often forgets its giants, Gossett remains timeless His work carries with it the weight of struggle, the dignity of survival, and the light of hope He reminds us that no role is too small when it is played with conviction and no voice is too soft when it speaks the truth

As we revisit his unforgettable performances and honor his contributions, we are reminded that Louis Gossett Jr didn’t just act he awakened us And through his enduring body of work, he continues to do so

Breath of Grace: How Jacoby Curry Turns Pain into Praise with Every Note

When you hear Jacoby Curry play the saxophone, you’re not just hearing music you’re witnessing a miracle in motion The smooth flow of his sound carries the power of healing, the presence of grace, and the testimony of a self-taught artist who refused to give up.

“What inspired me to play saxophone was me listening to Pandora one day and Kenny G came on,” Jacoby recalls. “After hearing it, I was like I wanna be bigger and better than Kenny G.” That spark was all he needed Without lessons, books, or videos, he bought his first saxophone and let his heart lead the way

“I taught myself in under two months,” he shares. “It was just me, Pandora, and my new saxophone ”

The journey wasn’t easy “I had a lot of malfunctions and mess ups,” he admits “There were times I wanted to quit because I sounded so horrible. But one day it finally came to me.”

And thank God it did!

Jacoby’s passion goes beyond sound “I hope me playing saxophone heals people’s hearts from the obstacles they face on an everyday basis,” he says. “So that the problems cease right away from the first note.”

Before each performance, he has one sacred ritual “I thank God for the gift He bestowed upon me And that it sends a message to everyone that there’s still some hope left in this world.”

A self-taught saxophonist’s journey from doubt to divine purpose, healing hearts one song at a time

He always includes a song about God in every show “I always put God first in my music,” he says “Every single time ”

Jacoby Curry isn’t just playing to impress he’s playing to transform. And in his own words, he’s still chasing a bold dream: “I wanna be bigger and better than Kenny G!”

He’s already halfway there because when Jacoby plays, hearts listen.

His spirit is magnetic He reads a room’s energy and creates a live playlist in his head “Depending on the setting, I adapt really well I fill the room with positive sounds everyone loves.”

One unforgettable moment happened while playing the gospel song *Oceans* at the beach “A random person fell to his knees and started crying. Afterward, he told me thank you, that he was going through a hard time, and my music touched him tremendously.”

To those struggling, Jacoby offers this: “There’s hope Give it to God, and He will turn doubts into wonders.”

What can fans expect from his performances? “Love, glory, praise, excitement, and hope all in one package ”

BREAKING THE CHAINS:

Generational Mental Instability in the African American Community

Dr. Jerome Dorn

n cloaked in silence. The phrase What happens in this house stays in this house echoes through generations, serving as both a protective shield and a barrier to healing.

This culture of secrecy has, over time, allowed mental instability to pass silently from one generation to the next unspoken, untreated, and often misunderstood. Historical trauma from slavery to segregation to systemic racism has left deep emotional scars. For generations, African Americans were expected to endure pain quietly, to be strong, to survive. But survival often came at the cost of emotional wellness.

Depression was labeled as “the blues,” anxiety as “nerves,” and trauma as “just life.” Seeking help was considered weakness, or worse, betrayal. The impact of this generational mental instability is evident today. Higher rates of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and suicide are reported within the community especially among young Black men and women. Yet stigma still keeps many from reaching out. Thankfully, the narrative is beginning to shift.

A new generation is choosing transparency over silence, therapy over shame, and healing over hiding. Black therapists, mental health advocates, and safe community spaces are emerging as powerful forces to break the cycle. Social media campaigns like #BlackMenCryToo and #TherapyIsDope are making it clear: addressing mental health is not weakness it’s liberation. The road to healing isn’t easy, but it begins with one bold step: talking about it. And in that conversation lies the power to change not just one life, but the trajectory of a family, a community, and a culture.

THREE GENERATIONS OFLEGACIES

Three generations, one legacy of strength, creativity, and purpose. A grandfather's endurance, a father's voice, a son's vision shaping the world through passion and divine purpose

LIVE YOUR PURPOSE.

John Amos remained a loyal Kansas City Chiefs member long after he was cut from the team to pursue his acting career, that he named his son, “KC.”.

WHISPERS FROM THE WIND:

A SON REMEMBERS JOHN AMOS

NATURE

My father had an immense respect for nature

In his younger years, he’d take his horse into the desert, riding bareback across vast landscapes, breathing in rhythm with the animal beneath him. It wasn’t just about the ride it was about becoming part of something bigger than himself. The desert, the wind, the pulse of the earth these were his teachers. In later years, he found magic in the mountains and clouds, where he would spot the shapes of animals and faces in the sky like messages from beyond. Nature didn’t just move him it gave him stories.

Stories that were shaped not only by what he saw, but by everything he lived

My father’s life was layered Football player Actor Writer Producer And above all else storyteller He didn’t separate those chapters they were all pages in the same book He brought the same passion he had on the field to his performances on stage The same discipline he learned in the game fueled his writing Every lesson, every hardship, every triumph he folded them into the man he was

And to me he was dynamic Unshakable Both a father and a lifelong friend

He taught me the tenacity of an athlete The relentless resilience to never back down and never give up That mindset was woven into my bones It wasn’t just spoken it was lived

But it wasn’t just about strength My father understood the power of softness too the power of words

He’d often say, “Protect your vision with your voice. Let your words shape your world.”

His stories were more than entertainment they were blueprints. Lessons in courage, discipline, craft, and dignity. He wove those into everything. And I carry them with me, every day.

This is just the beginning of his story. Of our story.

More chapters remain

Nature, legacy, and the voice of a father who will never stop telling stories

LEGACY

My father, John Amos, lived a life that was more than just scripts and screens His legacy is not measured by the number of roles he played or the awards he received, but by the lives he touched, the perspectives he shifted, and the pride he instilled in generations who saw themselves in him finally represented, strong, dignified, and unapologetically Black

If you asked him what legacy he’d want to leave behind, I believe his answer would be simple and soulful: to inspire He would want people of every background, race, and creed to see their full potential reflected back at them He’d smile knowing that he made people feel seen, heard, and uplifted, even if it was only for a moment on a screen or a line in a script

Through every character he embodied from James Evans Sr on Good Times to Kunta Kinte in Roots my father fought stereotypes and dismantled barriers He helped audiences move past prejudice by simply being authentic, strong, and grounded in truth He didn’t just act he transformed minds, one scene at a time That’s the kind of legacy that lingers

If he could speak directly to the next generation of storytellers, I know he’d say: Guard your voice. Protect the essence of your perspective. The world doesn’t need a copy it needs your truth. He’d encourage them to tell stories that are raw, rooted, and real because that’s how hearts are changed.

To future artists, my father would say this: Never let obstacles compromise your vision. Keep pressing. Keep rising. Keep believing that your story matters because it does. And if his life teaches us anything, it’s that legacy isn’t what you leave behind it’s what you leave within others.

PUBLISHER’S HIGHLIGHT

When John Amos enters a scene, he doesn’t just perform he commands the moment His voice carries the weight of wisdom. His presence, a quiet force of dignity. And his legacy? It’s woven into the very fabric of American television, film, and cultural consciousness.

For more than five decades, John Amos has been a powerful fixture on screen and stage. To many, he is forever etched into memory as James Evans Sr., the hardworking, no-nonsense patriarch of Good Times, a role that gave voice and visibility to Black fatherhood in a way television had rarely dared. But Amos was never one to be boxed into one character or one era. His career is a testament to range, resilience, and unapologetic truth.

His portrayal of the adult Kunta Kinte/Toby in the groundbreaking miniseries Roots became a generational touchstone earning him an Emmy nomination and helping the world confront a deeper reckoning with history He didn’t just play a role; he embodied a story that could not be forgotten

From The Mary Tyler Moore Show to The West Wing, from the strong-willed Admiral Fitzwallace to the principled Mayor Ethan Baker in The District, Amos brought layered authenticity to every character His film credits span decades and genres from cult classics like The Beastmaster, to blockbuster hits like Die Hard 2, to timeless comedies like Coming to America and its sequel, Coming 2 America

But beyond the scripts and spotlights, John Amos is a storyteller at heart a man whose body of work has always pointed to something greater Whether on Broadway or behind the camera, he has remained a fierce advocate for stories that reflect our shared humanity and challenge us to see each other with greater compassion

His impact isn’t just what he’s done it’s what he’s made us feel Pride Courage Reflection Hope

As audiences rediscover his roles or introduce his work to a new generation, John Amos stands not just as an actor but as a keeper of truth, a craftsman of legacy, and a father figure to the culture

In every performance, he reminds us that Black excellence is not a moment it is a movement And John Amos has been marching at the front of it for over 50 years

THE TURK

In every professional football camp, There’s a man that’s known to all, Now there’s no one way of describing him, Cause he’s husky, thin, long, short and tall. Now, if this sounds contradictory, then listen on my friends, As I describe this man of many faces, And I assure you before I reach the end, You’ll agree he’s in many places Now, no one has ever seen this man or this figure made of mist, But I defy you to find one pro ball player who would not claim he does not exist Now his occupation is cutting heads, On that we all agree, You ask, “Amos, how is it you know so much of him?” My answer: he’s walked on me

Now the phrase “cutting heads” seems to cause you concern, You tell me it’s meaning you have yet to learn Well, my friends gather around and lend me an ear, And I’ll tell you how I met his acquaintance one year I just finished college ball in the fall of ’63, When the Denver Broncos contracted me Now being of sound of body and strong of limb, I decided to try my luck with them July 15 found me just raring to go, My young rookie hands already counting that dough But in training, however, I pulled a hamstring, For a free-agent rookie, ‘twas a terrible thing Later that night, still my first day in camp, Something came across my mind leaving an indelible stamp ‘Twas a phrase quite foreign to my rookie ear, A vet mumbling something about “The Turk being near ” I inquired of this vet, “Hey, just what does that mean?” And in the quite of my room, he unfolded this scene

His name was Leroy Moore, but he was known as Sweet-Pea, And it was he who first mentioned The Turk’s name to me “Oh, he’ll come for you, Amos You rookie just as sure as can be, All you hamstrings, sprained ankles, and those not sound of knee” He preceded my friends without further ado, To tell me in detail what Turk’s work bid him do His eyes slanted down to the thinnest of dimes, And he riveted his pupils and irises on mine He said in a voice still quivering with fear, “There were sixty of us at noon, now there’s fifty-nine here.” Unless you recuperate with all possible dispatch, Your head will be added to The Turk’s growing batch. I told Sweet-Pea, “Leave!” I considered his presence an imposition, All this talk about cutting me, And he and I playing different positions. He reluctantly rose and as he reached for the door, He sorrowfully said, “Well, The Turk’s claimed one more. ” Just as I retired and turned out the lamp, Something at the window made my feets turn damp. Two glimmering eyes they seemed like to me, Fire-like and fiercely they burned into me. Big as life, strong as death, He was there, Standing outside my window, On fourth-story mid-air.

Big he was with a beard and a ring in his nose, With a sack full of heads that hung down to his toes I slumped to my knees, My heart all a flutter, Before losing consciousness, I heard the thing utter “I AM THE TURK! Of that you can be certain, And some time on you, Amos, I’m going to ‘ring down the curtain” I lost all track in things that took place, The last thing I saw was The Turk’s wicked face For I sank into a blissful coma at last, When I awoke, the evening had passed When in walked the trainer, On his face the queerest look, He said, “The coach wants you, Amos, And, uh, bring your playbook” The coach greeted me and said, “Have a seat”, The next words I still find it hard to repeat “Son,” he said affectionately, And this made my heart glow, “I’m afraid we ’ re gonna have to let you go ” His words stunned my ears with their smashing impact, My mind ceased to function like a train off the track My thoughts of a ranch home, a new XKE had gone up in smoke The Turk walked on me, To pay off that mortgage that was owed by mom Shucks, The Turk blew that up in a ten-second storm My hopes and my dreams had just turned to dust, The Turk in my ear whispered, “Cut you, I must” My pride had been shattered, My ego deflated, I was dejected, The Turk was elated

So in parting, I leave you with this simple advice, Beware of The Turk, for his heart is like ice His eyes are all-seeing, His ears hear all sounds, He picks up on dropped passes, And all missed first downs He picks up on linemen who forget who to block, He picks up on flankers faking you out of your jock He’ll even cut no-cuts, Pay them off, send them home, He’ll cut and hack a squad down to the bone Those surviving the ax need not feel too secure, For The Turk’s always waiting of that be assured

You there, vet, and you, rookie, And you, free agent like me, The Turk will have all of helmets hanging from his tree.

So heed these last words as I bid you adieu, Look over your shoulder, Who’s that reaching for you?--John Amos

Every great movement begins with a spark and for the Hattie M Wiggins Beacon of Light, Inc, that spark was a woman named Hattie Mae, a 22 year old young mother of two children who lost her fight to domestic violence at the hands of her husband

As the devoted Secretary to the Navy Chaplains at NAS Pensacola, Hattie Mae Wiggins, or Heddie Mae, as she was affectionately called, wasn’t just a professional; she was a quiet storm of love, compassion, and advocacy She poured herself into her community, helping those in crisis, comforting the brokenhearted, and uplifting those overlooked Her mission was love in action

Tragically, her life was cut short, but not her impact In the nearly 50 years since her passing, her daughter, Shernita, has taken up the mantle, turning that spark into a blazing fire of hope Through trauma-informed care, faith-based initiatives, and strategic collaborations, the Beacon of Light uplifts survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and chronic illness both men and women.

With partnerships across nonprofit sectors, advocacy for holistic wellness, and a relentless pursuit to be a voice for the voiceless, this organization shines brightly. The legacy of Hattie Mae lives on in every outreach, every healing retreat, every life changed.

Let her story be a call to action. Watch closely. Listen carefully. Speak boldly. Abuse has no gender, and silence is not an option.

Hello my brothers and sisters in the Lord!

I am so excited to share with you what the Lord has given me regarding the power in the last days It might seem like the Church has lost her power, but that is the farthest thing from the truth

You see, Jesus left us the truth in the Bible within the scriptures

We must be willing to pray and ask God for guidance as we search and seek for them, apply them to our lives, and then witness to others so that they can apply them to their lives That’s called making disciples

According to the Bible, we need power in order to witness effectively That kind of power does not come from your positions, titles, or material belongings. It comes from God alone. Let’s go deeper.

Joel 2:27–32 (KJV)

Pastor Mary Johnson

Voice for Jesus Outreach Ministries

Email: Marythevoice8@gmail.com

27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit

30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call Acts 1:8 (KJV)

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth

These two scriptures Joel 2:27–32 and Acts 1:8 are timely and powerful reminders for us to meditate on, especially in this very hour Truly, I believe with all my heart that we are living in the last days Just look around we are witnessing all kinds of evil at work The love of many, even among our own family and friends, seems to have waxed cold. Our children and grandchildren appear to be doing everything but the right things. Every time we turn on the television, it’s more bad news, more tragedy, more confusion

And yes sometimes it feels like the more we pray, the worse things get But I came to tell you today: that’s just the enemy trying to wear you down He wants you discouraged He wants you to stop believing

But wait a minute God made a promise! He said He would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh, and He said we would receive Power after the Holy Ghost comes upon us. And guess what? God always keeps His promises

Our sons and daughters will prophesy That wayward child? That broken family member? That friend you thought was too far gone? Don’t be surprised when they break forth in power!

The Spirit of God is being poured out right now, in the name of Jesus Keep believing Keep praying. The fire is falling, and the promise still stands.

God bless you.

Footprints of Faith Meet Keionna Odom

NOTE FROM PUBLISHER

There’s something undeniably powerful about a soul transformed by fire someone who's walked through storms and come out refined by the love of Christ. In this heartfelt testimony, you’ll meet a woman who’s not afraid to be honest about her journey. She doesn’t hide the broken pieces she holds them up to the light of God's grace. From religious routines to radical redemption, her words unfold like a prayer, rich with pain, healing, and revelation. This isn’t a story about perfection. This is a story about pruning — about what God cuts away so something new can bloom. Her walk with Christ was not born from tradition, but from a raw, authentic encounter that shifted her entire life. And in every word, there’s hope for anyone who’s ever felt lost, unsure, or undone. Lean in. Her voice is your invitation to believe again.

“The Pruning Before the Promise”

“Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” –Proverbs 22:6

Growing up, I can recall being in church what felt like all the time under my mom and grandparents for every Pentecost, every youth meeting, every Sunday school convention I was there But of course, there’s a huge difference between being in church and the church being in you. One thing I can tell you now that I’m older is that Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it” is one of the many scriptures I’ve found to be true.

Looking back over my life, I set a plan for myself. I wanted to be married at a certain age, have children at a certain age. I even set an age for when I was going to get saved But God always has a way of letting us know we’re not on our own timing. On June 25, 2023, I gave my life fully over to God and received the Holy Ghost

I wish I could say I came to God as a child, but that’s not my testimony I came to Him after having my heart broken I began seeking answers through dark magic. I was drinking, smoking doing anything I could to reach what I thought would amount to happiness I went to God when I was at a place where I had finally given up on my plans and wanted to take on the plans He had for me.

Once I got saved, I thought everything was going to be easy WRONG! Life with Christ is easier, but the Bible tells us that trials and tribulations are bound to come. The thing about being saved is that scripture also gives you a guarantee: If you suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will reign with Him So even though you go through it, your end reward is with the Father which makes going through it all worth it.

After I graduated high school, I always told my grandmother that one day I would get married, have children, and then I would get saved and settle down. Granny would always follow up with, “Until you get THE man, He won’t send you THE man ” Of course, I used to laugh it off, like, “Yeah, okay we’ll see about that.”

Fast forward: sure enough, I kissed a few frogs, had my heart broken, and ended up turning to tarot readers trying to find answers but still came up broken, ashamed, and lonely.

Once I received the Holy Ghost, it seemed like everyone I was once involved with came back confessing love But I had finally reached the point where I told God, “I don’t want anything or anyone unless he comes from You.”

I had finally settled into single life and was happy with just Jesus I went on a family vacation, and I got a DM on Facebook Mind you, I hardly ever check my Facebook messages, but I saw it and was like, “Hmm... okay God, if it’s from You, it’ll work out and if not, so be it ” We continued talking, praying together, and growing in love We got engaged and surely, I thought, “Well Lord, this is it.”

Antioch Apostolic Ministries 1131 Barth Lane, Molino, FL 32577. Overseer Kenneth Wilson and Assistant Pastor Jerri Wilson

I thought it was all happening just how Granny said it would Now that I had THE man, I thought He had sent THE man for me

We set the date. Invites were sent. Plans were made. Money was spent. Excitement was built. But still God’s plans are not always ours. Two months before the date of the wedding, I was terminated unexpectedly from my job It left me saying, “Lord, what is going on here?” Yet I had a peace that was unexplainable It was nobody but God

The following week, after the termination, the wedding was called off. I remember saying, “Okay… did I do something wrong? Like, why is everything falling apart?” But it wasn’t until going through these tests and trials that I realized what looks to be falling apart to us is really God’s way of reshaping, refining, and restoring us to where He desires us to be in preparation for our next.

I wish I could say I’ve been a strong soldier through it all but no. My flesh had moments of doubt, sadness, and confusion But what I love the most about having the Spirit of God on the inside is that He never leaves you in that place. He sends the Comforter to remind you of who you are and whose you are.

I ended up facing my ex for the first time, and I thought it would be nothing but anger and hatred that I’d feel But God has a funny way of turning things Seeing him again, I felt sadness but not for myself No one ever talks about the part where God will literally have you pray for the one who hurt you.

But surely God’s Spirit is real and so is His love. I found myself praying for him and was even able to embrace him Something I never thought I’d be able to do

But God.

I say all of this to say: no matter what you face no matter the tests, trials, ups and downs know that God will be there through it all. God’s growth is sometimes uncomfortable But once you begin to see the beauty in His pruning, you begin to see the tests and trials as a blessing because after it’s all over, you know that God is getting ready to birth something new.

I pray this encourages you not to give up in the faith and to know that: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning ”

Still Standing: Strength Through the Storm

Adversity may bend us, but it does not break those rooted in faith. Life’s trials loss, betrayal, trauma are often the soil where purpose is planted Like gold refined by fire, you emerge stronger, wiser, and more radiant Even when the night is darkest, hope is not lost.

Scripture:

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair."

2 Corinthians 4:8 (NIV)

Wahoos Game

for Enrichment and Advocacy

On May 24, 2025, the Hattie M Wiggins Beacon of Light, Inc (HMWBOLI), 501c3 nonprofit in Pensacola, Florida continued its mission of mentoring young men through purposeful engagement, taking 15 members of its first Nex-Gen Men of Distinction cohort to the Blue Wahoos home game in Pensacola, Florida This meaningful outing was not only an opportunity for community bonding but also aligned with the organization's commitment to advocacy and service, as the mentees participated in a Snack Drive benefiting cancer patients. The donation was made in the name of the program’s lead facilitator, former Police Chief David Alexander III, a beloved community figure and dedicated mentor The Nex-Gen Men of Distinction program focuses on mental health, healthy masculinity, and leadership development, encouraging boys and young men to become holistically healthy individuals who positively impact society

This initiative was birthed from a powerful partnership with A Call to Men, a national organization focused on promoting healthy, respectful manhood and preventing violence against women, children, and others Using their evidencebased curriculum, HMWBOLI empowers young men to "get out of the manbox" a restrictive set of societal norms that stifle emotional expression and promote dominance over vulnerability The outing was attended by the organization's Founder and Executive Director, Shernita Wiggins-Wynder, a strong supporter and community leader, alongside her husband, Dr. Lawrence Wynder. Also accompanying the group were President and Director of Programming, Hatiara Owens, Lead Facilitator David Alexander III and his wife Alcuin Alexander, as well as Facilitator Coach James Long and his wife, Educator Margo Long Together, these staff and facilitators modeled unity, compassion, and strength core values imparted to the mentees through the program

By attending the Blue Wahoos game, mentees not only experienced the joy of sports and camaraderie but also witnessed firsthand the power of community advocacy Donating to the Snack Drive for Cancer patients was a moment of humility and purpose, giving the young men a deeper understanding of service leadership For HMWBOLI, cancer advocacy is not a passive commitment, but an active initiative integrated into their work throughout the year "This trip was more than just a baseball game," said Mrs Wiggins-Wynder "It was a lesson in leadership, service, and collective joy Watching these young men laugh, cheer, watch the f ireworks, and give back was a powerful reminder of why this work matters."

As the program continues to grow, Wiggins-Wynder, who is certified to replicate the program across other cities, hopes to inspire more communities to implement similar mentoring 1 models Through training and outreach, HMWBOLI aims to equip other leaders to break toxic cycles and build generations of emotionally healthy and socially responsible men. Ms. JoAnne Bland

Ms JoAnne shares wisdom with the mentees after she is presented with gifts for her office from the founder of the Hattie M Wiggins Beacon of Light, Inc , Shernita "Movements for social change are like jigsaw puzzles Everyone is a piece If your piece is missing, the picture is not complete

Why? Because you're the most important piece. By the time I was 11 years old, I had been arrested 13 times that are documented. I was an active participant in Bloody Sunday, marching alongside 600 or more only to get brutally beaten, tear gassed and hit by policemen on horses with billy clubs.”-JoAnne Bland

Dr. Lafayette’s Legacy of Nonviolence: His Unshakable Courage

In the face of brutal violence, Dr. Bernard Lafayette never wavered in his commitment to nonviolence. In 1961, as a Freedom Rider in Montgomery, Alabama, he endured a vicious beating at the hands of a white mob—while police stood by and did nothing. Just two years later, on the night civil rights leader Medgar Evers was assassinated, Lafayette was again severely beaten, this time in Selma. Still, he did not turn back. Instead, he turned these acts of hatred into a deeper commitment to peaceful resistance. Dr. Lafayette’s strength came not from retaliation, but from his belief in the power of love and justice to overcome hatred. His life stands as a testament to the enduring power of nonviolence—even when met with unthinkable cruelty. His legacy teaches us that courage isn't the absence of fear, but the decision to fight with peace in the face of it.

Chef

Whether you're craving village kitchens in Southeast Asia or hidden gems in American food cities, these strategies help you eat well, stay safe, and travel smarter. By blending research, spontaneity, and local wisdom, your meals will feel more meaningful and your stomach will thank you

5 essential foodie travel tips

1. Eat Where the Locals Eat

Choose restaurants and stalls frequented by locals not just tourists Long lines outside often signal authenticity and quality, not hype Ask people “Wheredoyou eat?” rather than “What should I eat?” to uncover hidden gems

2. Avoid Tourist Zones—Five‑Block Rule

Walk at least five blocks away from major attractions usually the best food is just outside the touristed areas This simple rule leads to better flavor, fairer prices, and more authentic local eats.

3. Plan for Flexibility & Spontaneity

Research must try dishes and local markets before you go but leave room to wander Street vendors and markets often yield unexpected delights you can’t prebook or anticipate

4. Protect Your Health—Simple Travel Food Safety

Choose stalls where food is grilled or served hot and fresh, with minimal exposure to flies or heat Skip items left out in the sun; opt for freshly cooked meals Carry reusable water bottles, healthy snacks, and plan your meals packing items like hard boiled eggs or fresh veggies ensures you’re fueled and fit

5. Pack Flavor Enhancers for Untasty Options

Airplane food often tastes bland due to altitude dulling taste buds carry a small tin of sea salt or chili flakes to elevate in-flight meals A tiny seasoning boost can transform a mediocre meal into something memorable

Legacy in Motion:

THE FAMILY TREE THAT STILL BEARS FRUIT"

There are families whose stories are etched in struggle, strength, and triumph and the legacy of the publisher Shernita’s grandmother Arzella Nettles is one of them A resilient farmer and matriarch, Arzella raised twelve children and countless grandchildren with little more than faith, hard work, and unwavering love After the tragic loss of her daughter, Hattie Mae, she embraced the calling to raise her grandchildren, Shernita and Steven, adopting “Neda” and becoming the sole guardian of Steven and successfully anchoring them in values of perseverance, love, and determination. It didn’t mean that the outcome would come without challenges, but the foundation she established allowed all of them to trust God in His process of endurance.

On May 3, 2025, the J F Shields Athletics Hall of Fame Class IV Induction Ceremony became more than just an event it became a living tribute to Arzella’s legacy Family gathered in unity to celebrate her grandson, Darryl McMillian, inducted into the 2025 Hall of Fame class, and her sons Charles, Perry, and Thomas Wiggins honored as part of the legendary undefeated teams

Their achievements are more than athletic milestones; they are seeds sown from Arzella’s strength. Her legacy lives on in each stride, every victory, and all the lives she touched. To our honorees: your excellence inspires future generations to rise.

We celebrate Arzella Nettles. We honor her. We continue the journey strong, proud, and rooted in love.
