Strasbourg, 1518. A mysterious and occasionally deadly fever which forces those infected to dance, grips the streets of the city. 500 years later in South Wales, the fever has returned. Joanne Bevan, a lonely and frustrated call centre worker, finds herself disconnected from her family, her community, and her own body. One day she is visited by St Vitus, the Patron Saint of dancing, who invites her to dance away her problems. But what happens if she’s forgotten how to dance? What happens if she can’t stop? What happens if the fever spreads?

Hero or enemy? Who can actually tell the difference?

A HERO OF THE PEOPLE

Everything is going to be fine, better than fine, in fact there’s nothing that can’t be achieved if everyone just believes a little. That’s what the town’s MP, Mick, thinks. He’s optimistic, positively boosterish about his plan for the town. He just wants the naysayers to pipe down. But there’s a problem. His sister, Dr Rhiannon Powell, has discovered that the project appears to be polluting the town’s water supply. Mick sold the town a story about the future, but what will happen when reality looks to tear that story apart?

What will the cost be for himself, his family and his town? Is he in too deep?

Experience the latest work from some of the UK’s best playwrights as Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s celebrated new writing festival NEW returns. This year Sherman Theatre will play host to two of the four plays. Performances at the Sherman include our seventh successive collaboration with the Royal Welsh College with Jungle Green by Jacob Hodgkinson (Between Eternity and Time, Lung Water), alongside the premiere of Really Bad by Louise Orwin.

At Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, awardwinning playwright Roy Williams (RWCMD Writer in Residence) joins the line-up, alongside writer Charlie Josephine. See the world premiere performances in Cardiff before they transfer to The Yard Theatre in Hackney.

Where, if anywhere, can we find hope? Once a cycle of violence and cruelty has been set in motion, can it ever be stopped? David Judge’s bracing and powerful play asks these questions and many more.

Chat Back, Sherman Youth Theatre’s first live production in two years, promises unflinching and uncompromising theatre made by and for young people. Chat Back deals with adult themes and contains strong language, scenes and references some audience members may find distressing or upsetting.

Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for young people aged 13 – 18 and is one of the most vibrant and important events in the youth theatre calendar. It gives young people invaluable experience of professional theatre-making.

Sherman Theatre is proud to host Connections once again. This year joining Sherman Youth Theatre, with performances of these exciting new plays across three days will be The College Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend College, Everyman Youth Theatre, Actors Workshop, Perfect Circle Youth Theatre, Sundial Theatre Company, and Swan Theatre Young Rep Company.

Performed by the young people of Group 4. Join us on Saturday for an additional performance by Sherman Youth Theatre’s Group 3.

Performed entirely on and under a kitchen table, this classic story is brought to life in a playful and fascinating show full of Lyngo’s magic with feathery spinning birds, a flying house and a portable forest.

In a muddied nightdress, in a country kitchen, Violet finally smiles. For years, her tired daily routine has been dictated by the inescapable chime of the Clock Tower, until one night she feels time quicken. Suddenly an hour is lost – every day. As the hours disappear, long-held certainties evaporate and ordered society falls into disarray. With the townspeople in crisis, can Violet finally escape?

Sung in English, with English and Welsh subtitles.

A co-production for the Aldeburgh Festival by Music Theatre Wales and Britten Pears Arts.

The nearest car park is NCP Dumfries Place which is a five minute walk from Sherman Theatre. Find out more on our website. There is on street car parking in Cathays Park which is just over five minutes’ walk away. On street parking is now very limited on Senghennydd Road. There is blue badge parking outside the theatre.

Our Café Bar serves exceptional Welsh coffee, tea and produce alongside a range of light bites (including lots of vegan and vegetarian options) as well as an extensive range of soft and alcoholic drinks.
