Community is defined as a group of people living in the same place who share attributes of the people in it, and the strengths among them. Basically, you need a bunch of people who are alike in some way, who feel some sense of belonging or interpersonal connection. Having been in the community for 10 years at the Park District, I am grateful for all the wonderful partnerships we have with local businesses, government organizations, and the residents who participate and are involved in our programs and events. The Park District is an integral part of the community and provides several opportunities throughout the year to bring everyone together. Whether that is an opportunity for you and your family to attend one of our parks, programs or special events, the Park District allows people the chance to gather and recreate from infancy all the way to our active older adults and everything in between. I often think, we get to throw multiple parties each and every year for Warrenville to come together from events such as the Multicultural Festival, Summer Daze, Fall Fest, Art on the Prairie, and Holly Days, just to name a few. I often catch myself standing back just taking in the event, enjoying seeing all the happy faces and camaraderie taking place.

As I mentioned in my article last brochure, we are conducting our community wide strategic master plan. Surveys were sent out to the community in a random manner in early October and are currently being collected and tabulated. By the time you receive this, the survey will be out for anyone and everyone to complete which is an integral part of our planning process that will shape the future of the Park District for the next 5-10 years. We want to hear from you on things that are important to you and your families along with providing us a road map for our future. This will help guide our efforts to improve Warrenville’s fast growing parks system and plan for the future of our parks and recreation services, including prioritizing projects, maintenance, policy and funding.

The consulting team has developed an ADA accessible, multilingual crowdsourcing website to guide the project at www.warrenvilleparkplan.com. This website will provide information on all the plan updates, meeting dates, and online surveys. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions on how the Park District can better serve you, please feel free to contact me directly. I wish you a fun and healthy winter/spring season with

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – ROB & KATIE SPERL: “We moved to Warrenville in 1999. About a year after moving in, Rob saw in the newsletter that the park district had an opening on the park board. Between volunteering for that and working for another park district, to a part of the community events. We both used to run in the Firecracker 5k, but these days were watch traffic at corners. Since the race goes past both ends of our block, the walk to and from our posts is a much shorter distance! The beer tent at Summer Daze is another fun one. Barb Thornbury has encouraged a lot of people to make up the great teams working together throughout the event and we are glad to have helped out!”

Warrenville Park District Strategic Master Plan

#RECreateWarrenville

Warrenville Park District is embarking on a journey to create a Strategic Master Plan to shape future parks and recreation needs.

Residents are invited to participate in this process to help the District imagine what future parks, programs, special events, recreation facilities etc. could look like.

Can anyone participate in this project?

Yes, this is a community-input driven process and the outcome and future recommendations will be driven by the needs and vision articulated by community members.

How do I participate in the process?

Through the various section on our Strategic Master Plan Website, www.warrenvilleparkplan.com, you can provide open ended suggestions, respond to the online survey, know the dates for public meetings and even share feedback through social media as well.

What is the project duration?

The project duration is a 9–10 month process and anticipated to be completed in March 2023.

Who is responsible for the Strategic Master Plan?

The Master Plan is led by national consultants PROS Consulting, INC. (led by Mr. Neelay Bhatt) and ETC Institute.

Tiny Tornados Tae Kwon Do Ages 4-6

“These young ages are absolutely crucial for building a solid foundation that any child’s life is built on. Our program is specifically designed to work on the physical and mental skills necessary to support a happy, successful, healthy life. Teamwork and social skills - learning to interact with others is an essential skill. The activities in class will help develop teamwork and social skills that will benefit our students forever. Coordination & motor skills - a strong, healthy body is essential to a pain-free life and benefits the mind. Our classes will help develop good motor skills and develop a movement habit throughout their lives. Self-expression and emotions - as kids interact with screens and technology more and more, their social and emotional skills can suffer. Our classes will help your child learn how to healthily handle their emotions. Confidence - our classes strategically set up challenges to overcome. The process of failing these challenges and persevering until they succeed is the cycle that will build a strong instinct that they can overcome anything.” DW

Beginner Tae Kwon Do Ages 7-13

Getting your child started on the path to health and happiness is all about starting early. The earlier they receive these skills, the more accessible and more impactful the benefits will be in their life. Martial arts classes for kids aged 7-13 years offering a beginner level experience in “”Tae Kwon Do”” specifically focused on building 3 major life skills: Build confidence - we set up systematic obstacles that our students must overcome to build a deep, instinctual understanding that they can overcome anything, building true confidence. Most places just TELL kids to be confident. We BUILD confidence. Build discipline - discipline is a core tenet of martial arts. We help our students develop the tools to always accomplish anything they want and capitalize on whatever passions and goals they have. Build a strong mind and body - not only does martial arts form a strong, healthy body, but also a strong mind. We help students gain control over their emotions and behavior so that THEY are in control of their lives instead of the other way around. DW

new Chair Yoga Ages 15+

Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines physical poses, controlled breathing, and meditation or relaxation. Gentle yoga classes use basic yoga poses in a slow, low-impact way, flowing from pose to pose or staying with one pose for a longer amount of time for a slower paced and gentle practice. The intensity may be lower, but the focus and commitment are high. This gentle yoga class moves at a steady pace, slowly cycling though a series of floor based or seated asanas and standing poses to balance strength and steadiness in body and mind. It is appropriate for all levels and ages of practitioners. A gentle yoga practice is a great choice for anyone who is afraid they are not flexible or fit enough to do the yoga poses. NB

Reasons We Love Fitness Now

“Where do I begin? I’ve been going to the Warrenville Park District’s FitnessNOW for almost a year now and it’s been a wonderful experience! From the sense of community & positive energy to knowledge & passion for fitness, I truly enjoy going there for my daily workouts - which is a true testament. And the staff are the best including the front desk, trainers, fitness supervisor and group class instructors.

I’ve gone to other gyms/worked with other trainers and I can say with 100% certainty I’m going to be a member here indefinitely. Big box gyms and their trainers aren’t as dedicated to their clients and just seem to want $ but my experience here has been the exact opposite of that. My trainer goes above and beyond to create a fun, physically safe workout program for me and I can’t wait to see what’s next. We’ve already seen so much success and I can’t imagine having a better partner in my fitness/ health & wellness journey. Seeing him weekly for our workouts is truly one of my favorite parts of the week (which says a lot as someone who hadn’t worked out for about 2 years before that).

I feel like I’m learning more about my body and how to change for long term success while collaborating with my trainer who actually wants to know my input on things along with always checking in to see how I’m doing/feeling.

Simply put: it’s the best, so affordable and more than just a gym but a community!” - Nikki C.

Youth Baseball League WARRENVILLE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

Baseball Season Is All Year!

The WAA is a not-for-profit organization comprised of up to a 12-member all-volunteer board and is an affiliate of the Warrenville Park District. The WAA’s mission is to provide high quality youth baseball programs to Warrenville and surrounding communities. Emphasis at all levels is placed on sportsmanship, team spirit, and baseball fundamentals. It is the belief of the WAA that baseball programs serve our community by creating a place for our children to have fun, become more physically fit, learn good sportsmanship, and learn basic concepts of teamwork -- including tolerance of others -- and recognition of different skill levels.

Some of our major activities throughout the year include the season opener and league banquet, All-Star games and the annual 4th of July Cerny Series. We also fund travel team tournaments, capital improvements, and general field maintenance via our procurement and management of Hotel Funds from the City of Warrenville.

The league is open to boys and girls between the ages of 5-14. Practices usually begin around April 1 with games starting April 30. Games are played throughout the week and continue until June. Playoffs for Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony leagues end the first week of July. In addition to the spring season, we also offer a "Fall Ball" season. We will be sending out more information on registration for fall ball in the near future.

You can volunteer your time for special events that support our program; please contact the WAA at volunteer@waasports.com. Leagues fill up fast so get in early to ensure your spot.

For more information on registration or for baseball related inquiries please contact: Robert Schwichtenberg, rjs78@hotmail.com, 630.723.8425

Planned Financial Independence Co. presents Warrenville Park District Community Impact

On November 9, the Warrenville Park District celebrated the 10th anniversary of Pickleball. This interactive and low-impact sport provides many health and social benefits. Tony Malia will forever be known for introducing the sport of Pickleball to the Warrenville community and we are thankful for his dedication to the Warrenville Park District athletic programs.

The resurfacing project for the gym floor at the Recreation Center was completed in September. This included a complete sanding of the original 17-year-old floor, fresh lining, new seal and the addition of our logo at center court.

On October 21, FitnessNOW hosted a Boot Camp for Breast Cancer fundraiser. Through registration fees and donations, together we raised $275 which was donated to the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center here in Warrenville.

Our Commitment to Quality and Service

Total quality management is one of our goals. We strive to provide you with high quality recreation programming, and we take pride in making your experience with the Warrenville Park District an enjoyable one. If you are not completely satisfied with your recreation experience or any service that the park district provides, please contact us to share your concerns and suggestions for improvement. We would also like to hear what you especially like about our programs and services. Please call 630.393.7279 to receive our Customer Feedback Form.

Errors and Adjustments

While we at the Warrenville Park District try to be accurate in the information presented in our brochure, some unavoidable errors or changes to the programs, fees, schedules, and other information may occur. The Park District apologizes for any inconvenience resulting from these necessary adjustments.

Park District Risk Management Association

In 1993, the Warrenville Park District became a member of the Park District Risk Management Agency (PDRMA). As a loss prevention measure, that group has asked its members to require program participants to execute a release form. The Waiver, Release and Hold Harmless Agreement is part of the registration form. Please read the form carefully, sign it and submit it when you register for any particular program. At the time of registration or at the first program session, you may be presented with a sheet describing some of the particular risk involved in that particular activity for which you have registered. If so, that additional material will become a part of the Waiver. Release and Hold Harmless Agreement. We want the registrants in our programs to be aware in advance that, when they participate in certain activities, there is a natural element of risk of injury which each participant must assume. We do not carry medical or accident insurance for program participants. The costs of that type of personal health insurance would make program fees prohibitive. Please review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have the proper coverage. The use of this form is one of our answers to the national liability insurance crisis, allowing us to continue to offer quality programs to the public at a reasonable cost. If you have any questions, please call 630.393.7279.

Behavior Management/Code of Conduct

All participants, parents, siblings, volunteers, and affiliate groups are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. The following guidelines have been developed to help make all of our programs, events, and affiliate programs safe and enjoyable for all participants. Additional rules may be developed for specific programs as deemed necessary by staff.

Warrenville Park District insists that all participants, parents, siblings, volunteers, and affiliate groups comply with a basic behavior code. All participants, parents, siblings, volunteers, and affiliate groups shall:

1. Show respect to all participants, staff, and volunteers.

2. Follow all program/event rules and take direction from staff.

3. Refrain from using abusive or foul language.

4. Refrain from threatening or causing bodily harm to self, other participants, or staff.

5. Refrain from harassment of any kind to other participants or staff.

6. Refrain from any type of bullying.

7. Refrain from any type of aggressive and violent behavior during park district or affiliate sponsored programs.

8. Show respect for equipment, supplies, and facilities.

9. Not possess any weapons.

The Warrenville Park District expects all individuals to conduct themselves in a manner in keeping with their levels of development, maturity, and demonstrated capabilities with a proper regard for rights and welfare of other individuals, staff, volunteers, and district officials.

Discipline

A positive approach will be used regarding discipline. Staff will periodically review rules with participants during the program session. If inappropriate behavior occurs, a prompt resolutions will be sought specific to each individual’s situation.
