Doughnuts are beloved breakfast staples. A glazed doughnut to go with morning coffee on the way to work is a morning ritual for many people.
Despite their popularity, many people do not know much about how doughnuts came to be.
Oily cakes precede doughnuts
The origin of doughnutss is widely debated. Desserts made from fried dough can be found in various countries and cultures. However, historians largely believe that the Americanized doughnut arrived thanks to Dutch immigrants. According to Smithsonian magazine, when Dutch settlers came to New York, they brought along olykoeks, translated to “oily cakes.” Records show the Dutch were making these creations as early as the mid-nineteenth century. These earliest doughnuts were balls of cake fried in pork fat until they were golden brown. Since the center of these doughnuts did not cook as fast as the outside, many also were stuffed with fillings that did not need to be cooked.
Literally minded name
In a similar fashion, Elizabeth Gregory, a New England ship captain’s mother, used her son’s spice cargo along with lemon rind to fashion her own fried dough. Gregory made these pastries so that her son, Hanson, and his crew could store them on long voyages, and eat something that would ward off scurvy and colds. Gregory stuffed walnuts or hazelnuts in the centers of the dough. She came to call the pastries “doughnuts.” However, others attribute the name to the original olykoeks, which were sometimes shaped into knots and called “dough knots.”
Seaworthy improvements
While the doughnuts certainly were acceptable, Captain Gregory came up with a way to improve his mother’s concoction. Rather than stuff the doughnut to make up for the uncooked center, he punched a hole in the middle of the dough ball before it was fried. The hole increased the surface area and exposure to the hot oil, ensuring the entire doughnut cooked evenly. Other stories about the doughnut hole attributed the modification to the fact that Captain Gregory could then hang the doughnut on the ship’s steering wheel so he could use both hands to steer.
Doughnuts get automated
Prior to 1920, doughnuts were made entirely by hand. Adolph Levitt, a Russian refugee and baker, began selling doughnuts from his bakery in New York City’s theater district. To keep up with the crowds, Levitt invented a gadget that could make the fried rings faster. A circle of dough shaped like a ring dropped into a vat of boiling oil, circulated, was flipped over, and emerged from the oil on a moving ramp. Many modern doughnut companies still make their doughnuts like this.
Modernization and mass production brought a shortening of the name “doughnut.” Various doughnut companies use “donut” for the cakes. Whether you call them dough knots, doughnuts or donuts, the treats are delectable.

chopped 4 eggs, beaten
2⁄3 cup milk
Oil for deep-frying
Salt and pepper
Cut each slice of bread into two triangles. Top eight of the bread triangles with the mozzarella slices and chopped anchovies. Place the basil leaves and olives on top and season with salt and pepper to taste. Lay the other eight triangles of bread over the top and press down around the edges to seal.
Mix the eggs and milk and pour into an ovenproof dish. Add the sandwiches and leave to soak for 5 minutes.
Heat the oil in a large pan until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds — the oil will then be hot enough for deep-frying. Before cooking the sandwiches, squeeze
the edges together again.
Carefully place the sandwiches in the oil and deep-fry for 2 minutes or until golden, turning once. Remove the sandwiches with a slotted spoon and drain on absorbent paper towels. Serve immediately while still hot.
Creamy Tomato Soup
Serves 4
3 tablespoons butter
1 pound, 9 ounces ripe tomatoes, preferably plum, roughly chopped
33⁄4 cups hot vegetable stock
2⁄3 cup milk or light cream
1⁄4 cup ground almonds
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons shredded basil leaves
Salt and pepper
Melt the butter in a large saucepan.
Add the tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes, until the skins start to wrinkle. Season to taste with salt
and pepper. Add the stock to the pan, bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, under a preheated broiler, lightly toast the ground almonds until they are golden brown. This will only take 1-2 minutes, so watch them closely. Remove the soup from the heat and place in a food processor. Blend the mixture to form a smooth consistency. Alternatively, mash the soup with a potato masher. Press the soup through a strainer to remove any tomato skin or seeds.
Place the soup in the pan and return to the heat. Stir in the milk or cream, ground almonds and sugar. Warm the soup through, and add the shredded basil just before serving.
Transfer the soup to warm bowls and serve hot.

Transform bananas into a moist dessert Bananas are a versatile fruit that can be eaten right off the bunch or utilized in a bevy of recipes. Despite being characterized as the first “superfood” endorsed by the American Medical Association in the early 20th century, bananas are avoided by some people. Some claim that bananas make people gain weight or develop constipation, but many medical organizations point to the nutritional benefits of bananas, which contain potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6, fiber, and manganese.
A banana’s flavor starts out as mildly sweet and gains more sweetness as it ripens. Very ripe bananas, or those that have brown speckled skins, don’t need to be discarded. They make perfect additions to baked goods, notably banana bread. Before tossing out brown bananas, consider this recipe for “Chocolate Chip Banana
Bread” courtesy of Jenna
Barnard and the Butternut Bakery Blog.
Chocolate Chip Banana
Bread
1 loaf
11⁄2 cups ripe and mashed banana (3 to 4 medium bananas), measured
1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar
1⁄2 cup granulated sugar
1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 large eggs
1teaspoon vanilla extract
1⁄2 cup 2 percent Greek yogurt (sour cream also works)
11⁄3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
3⁄4 cup mini chocolate chips, plus a handful more for sprinkling on top
Preheat your oven to 325 F and grease and line a 9x5 loaf pan with parchment paper.
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter and sugars until you reach a paste-like consistency. This may take some vigorous whisking for a minute or two. You can either use a whisk or an electric mixer with the paddle attachment. Add in your mashed bananas followed by the eggs, yogurt and vanilla.
Once all of your wet ingredients are mixed together, fold in the dry ingredients. Then, fold in the chocolate chips. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top if you like. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let it cool completely before removing from the pan. Store at room temperature in an airtight container.

The month of August has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in August 1923.
• United States President Warren G. Harding dies suddenly in San Francisco on August 2. President Harding was conversing with relatives when he passed away from what was then suspected to be a stroke but is now believed to have been heart failure. President Harding was 57 years old.
• Henry Sullivan becomes the first American to swim the English Channel when he completes the feat on August 6. Sullivan needed a little more than a full day to make his mark on history, swimming the channel in 27 hours and 25 minutes.
• Many businesses close and owners go on strike in Berlin on August 9. The protest is an attempt to force German Chancellor Wilhelm Cuno from office. Opposition to Cuno hardened over the next several days, ultimately prompting him and his cabinet to resign on August 12.
• An expedition by the American Museum of Natural History to the Flaming Cliffs in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert leads to the discovery of the first velociraptor fossil on August 11.
• A series of tidal waves strike the western coast of Korea on August 15. At least 346 people are killed and an additional 1,000 are considered missing after 25,000 homes are submerged in waves and flooding.
• Thousands of Canadians lose their savings when the Home Bank of Canada closes its doors on August 17.
• Ada Delutuk Blackjack is rescued on August 19 after being marooned on Wrangel Island above the Arctic Circle. Blackjack, an Alaskan native hired as a cook for a Canadian expedition to claim the island for Canada, had been marooned since September 15,1921. Blackjack was the last survivor among the five-person expedition team.
• On August 20, a train is robbed near Okemah, Oklahoma, and bandits take off
with $20,000 in cash and bonds. The incident marks one of the last train robberies in the United States.
• Lawmakers in Kalamazoo, Michigan, pass an ordinance on August 21 that forbids dancers to stare into their partners’ eyes.
• Four-year-old child actress Peggy-Jean Montgomery signs a three-year, $1 million contract on August 26. Known as “Baby Peggy,” Montgomery would make more than 150 short films and receive millions of fan letters in the 1920s. However, Montgomery’s parents mismanaged her earnings and she was forced to work as an extra by the 1930s.
• The first parliamentary election since the founding of the Irish Free State is held on August 27.

Filtration for Your Home’s Water
Standard filtration often leaves behind contaminants in your water that if you knew were there, you wouldn’t want in your home. Depending on what’s in your water, you may need additional filtration or even a combination of water treatments to make sure it’s as clean as can be. There are two main ways to connect a filter to your home’s water—whole home systems and point of use systems.
Water Softeners are available for sale or rent.

5 fun facts about the month of August
Summer is in full swing in August. Come the eighth month of the calendar year, temperatures outside tend to be especially steamy and individuals and families are doing all they can to make the most of the last full month of summer. As summer winds down, individuals can ponder these fun facts about the month of August.
1. Not unlike July, August is named after a notable individual associated with ancient Rome. Augustus Caesar, also known as Octavian and sometimes referred to as Caesar Augustus, was the first Roman emperor. Augustus’s reign was a lengthy one, beginning in 27 B.C. and lasting until his death in A.D. 14. Augustus’s maternal great-uncle was Julius Caesar, who happens to be the namesake of July.
2. August weather can make some people uncomfortable, and that has made the month part of what’s become known as “The Dog Days of Summer.” The
Farmer’s Almanac indicates that the moniker is linked to the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks believed that the rising of Sirius in mid- to late-summer caused the temperatures to rise and conditions to become less comfortable. Though temperatures remain hot and conditions humid in many parts of the northern hemisphere throughout the month of August, the dog days officially end on August 11.
3. Millions of adults feel there’s no more refreshing beverage on a warm summer evening than a cold beer, and that may be even more so on the first Friday of August. That day marks International Beer Day®, which began as a local event in the western United States in 2007 but has since spread globally. More than 200 cities in 80 countries and across six continents now celebrate International Beer Day®, and celebrants
can take part by enjoying a cold one and/or giving a loved one a beer. This year’s celebration will take place on Friday, August 4.
4. One of the most enduring motion pictures in Hollywood history premiered in August nearly 85 years ago.
“The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland premiered at the Orpheum Theatre in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on August 10, 1939. The Hollywood premiere at the famed Grauman’s Chinese Theatre occurred just five days later.
5. August is a notable month for one of the world’s most accomplished athletes. American swimmer Michael Phelps took center stage at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing when he won a total of eight gold medals, setting a record for the most gold medals by an athlete in a single Olympic Games. Phelps won his eighth gold medal in Beijing on August 17 in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, officially eclipsing fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz, who had won seven gold medals at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
6 health benefits of yoga
Are you ready for warrior pose? Have you engaged in downward dog today? You no doubt understand these questions if you have an even cursory knowledge of yoga.
Yoga is an ancient, ascetic Hindu discipline comprised of controlled breathing, body positions and meditation. The goal of yoga is to attain a deep state of tranquility and spiritual insight. While people may be quick to associate yoga with popular poses, it’s the complete package of breathing and reflection that does wonderful things for the mind and body.
Johns Hopkins Medicine says yoga can benefit people of all ages. It can help the healthy, but also can be utilized to treat people recovering from illness or surgery or those living with a chronic condition. While the scientific research into yoga’s health benefits is preliminary and not extensive, certain trends have emerged.
1. Improves flexibility: According to Yoga Journal, even the lowest intensity styles of yoga have been shown to increase flexibility. Yoga is especially helpful for adults ages 65 and
older, helping to slow age-related loss of flexibility.
2. Brain boost: Gray matter in the brain can diminish as people get older. However, according to a 2015 study funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there is no relationship between gray matter and age among yoga practitioners. In fact, yoga participants showed increased volume in certain brain regions commensurate with the number of years of yoga experience and practice,.
3. Back pain relief: Yoga poses can help alleviate pain in various regions of the body, notably the lower back. The American College of Physicians recommends yoga as a first-line treatment for chronic lower back pain.
4. Alleviate joint pain: Johns Hopkins Medicine says gentle yoga can alleviate some of the discomfort of arthritis, particularly tender, swollen joints.
5. Improved mental health: A 2017 meta-analysis of 23 interventions looking at yoga to alleviate depressive symptoms overwhelmingly indicated yoga can be an effective alternative treatment for major depressive disorder. MDD is thought to be one of the most
common mental health disorders in the world.
6. Reduced inflammation: A study published in 2018 in Biological Research for Nursing determined yoga is a viable intervention to reduce inflammation across a multitude of chronic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, Crohn’s disease, and cancer.
In addition to these health benefits, yoga can help tame stress, reduce pain, improve quality of sleep, and even boost immunity. Individuals are urged to start gradually in basic level yoga classes and slowly increase intensity as they grow more comfortable.
