After a devastating Wyoming winter, the importance of supporting elk and elk habitat (and thus lots of other wildlife) can’t be overstated, so to all of you who attended or supported our April Banquet, the Sheridan Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation offers a sincere THANK YOU! Your contribution to the Foundation’s mission, “to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage” is something to be proud of. When you see a cute calf and momma this summer, or a big bull next fall, remember that you helped make it happen; the nearly 250,000 members of the RMEF do big, great things! And when you interact with the companies and folks listed below, please be sure to let them know you appreciate their continued support of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation! The Banquet Committee and Volunteers worked hard to provide all our patrons with an evening of fun and friendship, and we sure couldn’t do it without all of these sponsors, underwriters and other supporting entities. Thanks again to everyone who pitched in to help make the Banquet a success and we look forward to seeing you next spring, hopefully with some great stories of your autumn elk hunt.

June marks the official start of summer in the northern hemisphere, and it’s the month when summer vacation begins for millions of schoolchildren. Those two things make the month of June especially popular in many households. But June is about more than summer and the end of the school year. The following are five fun facts about the beloved month of June that anyone can use as a great ice breaker at backyard barbecues this summer.
1. June is named after Juno, the Roman goddess of childbirth and fertility.
2. The day with the potentially longest hours of sunlight of any day all year is in June. When the sun is out on the summer solstice, which marks the official start of summer and in 2023 is celebrated on Wednesday, June 21, people in the northern hemisphere can anticipate more hours of sunlight than any other day during the calendar year.
3. According to the American Gem Society, June is one of only two months that is associated with three birthstones: alexandrite, moonstone and pearl. Pearls are especially unique among gemstones, as they are the only ones made by living creatures.
4. In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June.

Picnics are a fun way to bring people together to enjoy food and conversation. While there are no limitations to what a picnic may entail, when it comes to food, it may be best to pack items that are portable and do not require many accoutrements for eating. That is why finger foods make such great picnic fare. Fried chicken long has been a popular picnic menu item, but other chicken dishes can fill in for this staple quite easily. For example, this recipe for “Sesame Chicken Fingers with Honey Dip” can be enjoyed by kids and adults on a picnic or even at casual events at home. This recipe, from “125 Best Chicken Recipes” (Robert Rose) by Rose Murray, features a sweet honey dip, but other dips can complement the meal as well.
Sesame Chicken Fingers with Honey Dip
Serves 4
1⁄3 cup light mayonnaise
3 tablespoons liquid honey
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1⁄4 cup light mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1⁄3 cup dry bread crumbs
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 teaspoon dried Italian herb seasoning
1 pound skinless boneless chicken breasts cut into fingers, 2 inches long by 1⁄2-inch wide
1. Honey Dip: In a small bowl, stir together the 1⁄3 cup mayonnaise, honey and 1 tablespoon lemon juice until well combined. Refrigerate if making ahead.
2. In a small bowl, combine the 1⁄4 cup mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and 2 tablespoons lemon juice.
3. On waxed paper or in a shallow bowl, combine the bread crumbs, sesame seeds and Italian seasoning.
4. Coat chicken with mayonnaise mixture, then with bread crumb mixture. Place on prepared cookie sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown and the chicken is no longer pink inside, turning once. Serve hot with the honey dip and potato wedges, if desired.

Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden
Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church.
Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the
world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers — celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.
