1 tablespoon caraway seed
1 teaspoon cumin seed
4 large cloves garlic, unpeeled
4 large red bell peppers
1⁄2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons crushed New Mexico red chiles

Dip your spoon into a creamy mushroom meal
Soup can be a delicious meal for lunch or dinner or even make for a comforting snack. The versatility of soup undoubtedly contributes to its appeal. Just about any ingredient can go into a soup to yield the ideal result.
The benefits of soup do not end with flavor alone. A bowl of soup can be filling, helping to corral hunger and reduce overeating. Plenty of studies also link soup to increased wellness and recovery from respiratory illnesses. Soup also is a perfect comfort food on a cold day. It warms from the inside out, helping to chase away chills from damp or frosty conditions.
Mushrooms can be the star of soups, adding earthy notes to the broth. Enjoy this creamy recipe for “Easy Mushroom Soup” courtesy of the Mushroom Council.
Easy Mushroom Soup
Yield: 3-4
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 garlic cloves, minced 1 shallot, finely chopped 4 ounces crimini mushrooms, chopped 4 ounces white button mushrooms, chopped 2 tablespoons all-purpose
flour
3 cups chicken stock
1⁄4 teaspoon fine sea salt, or to taste
1⁄4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
Sliced sautéed mushrooms for garnish, optional
Chopped parsley for garnish,
optional
1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large pot such as a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and shallot, cook for 1 minute, until they begin to soften. Add the mushrooms and cook for about 3 minutes, until tender
and browned. Transfer all the contents of the pot to a bowl.
2. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the pot. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk it quickly into a paste. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the stock a little at a time, whisking out
the clumps between each addition.
3. Increase the heat back to medium-high and allow the soup to simmer well for 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms back to the pot and continue
to cook for 2 minutes more. The stock will thicken slightly to be somewhat creamy.
4. Let cook for 3 to 4 minutes, then ladle into bowls. Garnish with mushrooms and parsley, if desired. Serving

LEARNING TO DO, DOING TO LEARN, EARNING TO LIVE, LIVING TO SERVE.
FFA CREED
I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds – achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.
I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.
I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.
I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so–for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me.
I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.
The creed was written by E.M. Tiffany and adopted at the Third National FFA Convention. It was revised at the 38th and 63rd Conventions.

AG Teacher Burnout By Autumn Paustian Sheridan John B. Kendrick FFA District Speech 2023
Take a second and think of one individual that has had an impact on your life. For some of us, it might have been a coach, maybe a teacher, or a supervisor. For me it’s my ag teachers, and I am not alone in this feeling. Many people that have been involved in FFA or taken agriculture classes contribute their success in life to their ag teachers. Now, fellow FFA members, imagine that you just got the news that your ag teacher, your number one supporter and mentor, was quitting their job. The person who has led your FFA chapter for years has decided to leave the profession. This would be heartbreaking, right? This is an all-too common trend facing agricultural education. In order to better understand and combat this issue, it is necessary to find out what causes ag teachers to leave the profession, and how we can address the mass exodus from the profession. Unfortunately, in this past year my chapter had one of our advisors leave her job, and though she left mainly for the sake of her family, burnout had a big part in her decision. According to World Psychiatry, Burnout is “...a psychological syndrome emerging as a prolonged response to chronic interpersonal stressors on the job,”. Burnouts are typically found in professions that have a substantial amount of stress, like the medical field, law enforcement, or any jobs involving children. This poses the question, “What is causing this much stress for ag teachers?” I am sure all the ag teachers in the audience could name 50 reasons off the top of their heads. Some of the main stressors revolve around their overly demanding school responsibilities in addition to rigorous FFA schedules. First of all, ag ed cators tend to have very complex schedules that can easily wear them out. Planning and creating lesson plans for one class is already hard enough, but ag teachers are doing that for up to 7 different subjects a day. They are responsible for teaching classes that range from veterinary sciences to mechanics to welding, and the list goes on. For example, one of our advisors has 5 different classes with different curriculums throughout the day. Along these lines, I conducted a survey for current Wyoming ag teachers to better understand their experience levels, the number of hours they put in, and the amount of support they receive. In this survey, 48.9% of responders said that they put in 10 hours over their contracted hours every week, and 19.1% said they put in over 20 additional hours. Ag teachers do not just work from the first school bell to the next, but they put in hours before and after school that oftentimes they do not get paid for. Advisors choose to spend time developing and coaching teams in order to better prepare their students for competitions. Not only that, but they actually have to take them to competitions all over the state! And, depending on how long of a drive and the weather conditions, they might just end up having to spend the whole weekend with their students. This does not stop after just a few months of the CDE/LDE season. They have county and state fair, national convention, and their own chapter they need to organize and run. The AET has done the math, and found that advisors have led FFA members through 9.9 million experiential learning hours inside and out of the classroom just since July first. That figure is both astounding and impressive. All of those hours turn into experience that can be used to get ahead in their future careers. While all of this extra time makes teachers’ lives difficult, it is also what makes them so important to students. Students’ connection with ag teachers are not like any other. In my chapter, an overwhelming majority of students consider our advisors to be more like family rather than just a teacher. Something that I personally noticed is that no matter what kind of day I am having, my ag teacher is going to be the first to hear about it. With bonds like these, it is easy to understand how essential our ag teachers are to us. By the same token, our teachers often make their work with us the priority in their lives, leaving little to no time for their families, friends, personal hobbies and enjoyment. There is no absolute solution that will fit for every ag teacher in America, but there are some solutions that can help lighten the load and make the job more balanced for teachers.Number one: We can raise pay. Although the majority of ag teachers don’t join the profession because of the pay, it can be a significant reason why they leave. The average Agriculture Teacher salary in Wyoming is about $40,000 as of October of 2022. With ag teachers being so knowledgeable in so many different topics, they can apply their skills to many more high paying jobs. For example, one could choose to be an iron and steel worker, where the pay has the potential to double their income. This should say something about how little our ag teachers are getting back. Number two: we need more community support. Teachers often have a hard time asking for help, especially when they first join the workforce. According to The AET, “36.8% of ag teachers are ages 18-30”. Younger teachers are spending so much of their own time outside of their classes to help with practices and events. That is where alumni and other members of the community can help. Knowledgeable and experienced past members, family, or community connections can be a valuable asset to coaching CDE teams, while an alumni can help set up for fundraisers and events. Number three: A lot of the time ag teachers are not recognized in their community. They are working year round and non stop, yet they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Having recognition can let people know that they are appreciated and needed, and can make their exhausting jobs worth it. Even the smallest amount of recognition can go a long way. Now, as we leave here today, I hope that we can agree on at least two things: our ag teachers are too important to lose, and that we need to work on solutions as students and members of our community if we want to keep them around. Ag programs such as FFA are the learning ground for those who will ultimately lead the agricultural industry into the next decade and the one after that. The people who challenge, grow and encourage the next generations of agriculture professionals are those who teach them–day in and day out, year after year. So let’s do our best to preserve the vital role these individuals play in our society.

10 Things FFA Does
By Zoe VanWinkle
John B Kendrick Treasurer
1. Promotes leadership through events like speaking, and officer opportunities.
2. Builds teamwork abilities as members often are a part of a Career Development Event or committee.
3. Builds social skills throughout the state. Many events ask students to network with other students and industry professionals.
4. FFA members complete many hours of community service to make their communities a better place to live.
5. Builds character as students are usually asked to be comfortable being uncomfortable and challenging themselves to be better.
6. Promotes agriculture through advocacy and doing the best for the agricultural community.
7. Students asked to work on teams often have to work through conflict resolution.
8. Prepares students for real world experiences through competition in Career Development Events and Leadership Development Events.
9. Gives students confidence to make decisions and network with others from different backgrounds.
10. Members often are asked to speak in front of crowds conquering the world’s number one fear.

Tongue River Valley FFA Chapter
Fundraising by Colter Hanft
Every year we run a few different fundraisers, each with a different goal in mind. We start each fall by raffling off 2 halves of a pig to help raise money for our officers trip to nationals. Then following that in November we sell boxes of fruit to the community. This fruit comes all the way from Texas. Then our final fundraiser of the year is Donkey basketball in the spring. This is exactly what it sounds like. The kids in the chapter get on a donkey and play against the staff members
Importance of FFA
by Lily Krumm
FFA is an organization that has given me more oppor-
Problem
tunities than I ever thought possible. Throughout FFA I have gained invaluable knowledge, experiences, and memories. When I joined FFA as a freshman I was unsure of what this organization was or what it stood for. I quickly discovered that the idea of leadership is one of high importance. Within the FFA creed, there is a statement that says, “I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others”. Developing leadership skills is critical to today’s society. It allows us to solve problems, work efficiently, allow for guidance, and to help make informed decisions. One of the main ways I have developed leadership skills is creed and prepared speaking which are just two of the many leadership development events that FFA has. This has helped me gain the skill of public speaking. Public speaking is a career skill that can be extremely beneficial no matter what career path you choose. This has improved my leadership skills immensely. I now serve as the vice president of the Tongue River Valley FFA Chapter where leadership is a trait that’s needed. During my time as an FFA member,
I have gotten the opportunity to compete in different career development events as well. I have been lucky enough to compete at the state level in farm business management which is set up to simulate what it’s like to run and understand the business side of ranching or farming. This has given me a whole new perspective that I never understood before. Also, I got the chance to compete at state FFA in the veterinary science CDE which combines basic knowledge which can be tested, and a practical hands-on part. Both of these career development events have allowed me to see two very different career paths, and get an understanding of them that I may not have learned without FFA. I have always been extremely passionate about showing horses, and when I got to high school and joined my FFA chapter I discovered that I could show for my chapter. For the last three years, I have been able to show wearing an FFA jacket. I have shown at my local fair, and even got the chance to represent my chapter at the Wyoming State Fair. FFA is an organization that isn’t just for kids that come from agricultural backgrounds but is a club that has something for everyone. FFA builds a strong connection within the community. Every chapter performs different acts of community service throughout the year which strengthens relationships with members of the community. My FFA chapter always delivers food boxes to members in need in the community. As a chapter, we work with our community cupboard and use the food donated from food drives in the Tongue River school for food boxes for the holidays. We then go out into the community and hand out boxes of food. I have seen how grateful people are for an act of kindness which is something that I will take with me for the rest of my life. My time in FFA has taught me more than I thought possible and given me opportunities that I will never forget.
with the Water Industry By Amy Peldo Sheridan John B. Kendrick FFA District Speech 2023
70% of the world’s usable water is operated for agriculture annually. Why is this percentage so important to us as agriculturists? As the population is exponentially growing, and productive land is used for building development, there is a higher demand for water now than ever. Due to drought and unavailable land, farmers are struggling to adjust and find solutions to these problems. Some states have different climates from one town to the next. Farmers depend on the water given to them through ditches, rivers, and other water management resources, but they also depend on natural water distribution that cannot be controlled. Droughts are feared by agriculturists that survive off of the water to feed the consumers. Farmers cannot control these natural disasters. They have to maintain water and figure out new ways to improve their own priorities. Agriculture feeds America, without the proper distribution of water to farmers and other agriculturists, we cannot grow crops or feed our animals. If America does not prioritize the water industry in Agriculture, the industry as a whole will not grow and people will starve. Water is needed everywhere, not just in agriculture. Other leading uses of water are drinking, household uses including dishwashers, washing machines, hygiene, and cooking. As much as we try to cut down on our water usage, water is still a necessary resource for daily life. (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Irrigation accounted for 34 percent of the total withdrawals; public supply, 11 percent of the total; self-supplied industrial, 5 percent of the total; and self-supplied domestic, livestock, aquaculture, and mining combined accounted for around 2 percent of the total withdrawals. (USDG 2021). As most agriculturists know, desperate times call for desperate measures. Farmers are using more GMOs to help crops grow with less water. This ultimately means that there will be more Genetically Modified crops grown. Farmers use GMOs to prevent crop loss. Corn has been genetically modified to help farmers grow more with less water. Farmers have chosen corn because it has an abundance of uses. This specific crop can be used to feed livestock as well as people. Corn yields and planted acres have risen substantially in recent decades as farmers have adopted new technologies, particularly genetically engineered seeds, and precision farming systems, that have supported higher yields and expansion into new areas. Corn is the largest crop grown in the U.S. and uses the most land. In 2021 U.S. farmers and farmworkers produced about 15.1 billion bushels of corn. The United States produced about 32 percent of the world’s corn. These statistics are extremely important today. For example, if this number was cut in half, there would not be enough resources, or corn, to maintain a steady lifestyle for ranchers raising livestock, as they depend on this crop. Farmers and ranchers depend on recycled water heavily. If agriculturists can focus on recycling as much water as possible; then this is one of many solutions for the loss of water. Maintaining and managing the only water that is available for crops is crucial for the future of crop production, as well as livestock health. Irrigation is one of the many ways farmers can help reduce losing water and focus more on gaining and reusing the current water. Irrigation management works to upgrade and maintain irrigation systems, such as groundwater irrigation, that are already in place and expands the irrigation areas to increase the number of crops being produced. Recycling the water that farmers already have is beneficial for all. Recycling conserves energy. Recycling water also means it’s better for the community, it is locally controlled and managed. Another method used for agriculture and water management is rain fed agriculture systems. Some techniques in water management for rain fed agriculture include the use of supplemental irrigation and water harvesting techniques, such as rain catchment systems and weirs or sand dams. Although it may not be common, this technique is very beneficial in states that are clearly supplied with rainfall. As previously mentioned, states prone to drought with less water are more dependent on managing the water they have. These techniques help provide much-needed water to areas where rainfall is inconsistent. Having this water helps to increase the number and quality of the crops grown. This crisis in the water industry is detrimental to farmers nationwide. A local rancher in Sheridan,Wyoming shared his experience with how the water industry has affected his life. He states, “The cattle ranch that my family and I operate is something I am very proud of and work hard for. It is a dream out here every single day. Without water management practices today, the ranch that keeps us fed and helps us survive will not be here today, and neither will my dream. Water is something that we do take advantage of but will never have enough of. We have to have enough water for irrigation and cow water. We cannot live without it.” For this local rancher, it is his dream to raise high-quality cattle with his family. He depends on water and irrigation practices to keep his ranch going. America and the rest of the world need to understand the passion that ranchers have for agriculture and feeding the people as well. Although water needs to go to other priorities like treatment plants for drinking water and holding water, we as agriculturists need to make sure to set aside enough water for agriculture. Noting the costs for this improvement may not be easy, but it will have a good product in the end. People feel as if agriculture is affecting their world in a negative way. 70% of the world’s usable water is utilized for agriculture annually. As an outsider, that may be intimidating. People think that there are other important factors in their lives that are cut short by agricultural water use. In Wyoming, the city of Sheridan has been taking reservoirs and putting them for urban use instead of agricultural use. It is a very controversial topic for the City vs. Farmers. Agriculture’s importance in society affects our quality of life, nutrition, food, clothing, and shelter. There are endless problems that could be said about the water industry, today. When there is a problem, there has to be some sort of solution. All people worldwide can help with the problem at hand. As an FFA member, advocate for how important it is to manage water efficiently. It is important to spread information about priorities in the water industry and how it impacts all people.

Individuals with diabetes understand the importance of maintaining a doctor-recommended diet to help keep blood-sugar levels in check. It’s not always easy to stick to a healthy diet, but choosing versatile and tasty recipes can help make healthy eating that much easier.
In a saucepan, whisk together the soup, water and flour over medium heat. Stir until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Add the soup mixture and paprika to the beef in the frying pan. Over medium heat, stir the mixture until warmed through. Remove from heat and add the sour cream. Stir until combined. To serve, divide the pasta among the plates. Top with the beef mixture and serve immediately.

Animals with rabies can present with many different symptoms. They may appear nervous and agitated or become aggressive, attacking other animals or people. Most often the main symptom is unusual behavior, leading to depression or paralysis. Other symptoms are drooling and abnormal swallowing, making them appear to have something caught in their throat. Do not approach any animal with any of these symptoms.
If you feel you see an animal that you are concerned about, call our rabies mitigation trapper, Paul Herman, 751-1412.

You don’t have to spend a small fortune to get a great used vehicle. Stop in and let us show you these great buys.
We’ll treat you like family and we’ll show you the best buys in any price range.
They want me to end with a funny quote, but I refuse to joke about exchanging your vehicle just because I’m the foreign exchange student from Germany. That’s not even very funny.
We’re still fighting inflation and high prices by keeping our overhead expenses down and passing the savings on to our customers.
We specialize in maintained 1-Owner or 2-Owner vehicles and sell lots of great vehicles that never even get advertised.
We also sell several hundred vehicles a year under $10,000 when other dealerships say, “They just aren’t out there any more.”
