The arrival of a new year is a time of celebration for people across the globe. It’s customary to mark the occasion with fireworks, countdowns and champagne. For those who indulge a little too much on New Year’s Eve or stay up well past midnight, January 1 may be a day to recuperate. But spending New Year’s Day with Mother Nature is a great way to enjoy the first few hours of a new year.

• Go hiking. Time spent in freshly fallen snow and crisp air can offer a great way to recharge and approach the new year in a novel way. First Day Hikes were created

by America’s State Parks to encourage people to enjoy the outdoors. They are held across the United States, but people in Canada or elsewhere can organize these January 1 hikes as well.

• Host a firepit brunch. Spending time around the firepit may seem like an activity tailor-made for autumn evenings, but dusk need not have fallen to enjoy an outdoor fire. Dress warmly and gather friends around a firepit or outdoor fireplace. Swap s’mores for cheese cubes on sticks that can be made warm and slightly melted over the open flames.

• Float or paddle. Take in nature from the water. Although these types of events may be better in warmer climates, those who are courageous enough to brave the elements can spend some time kayaking or floating on waterways that have not frozen over.

• Head to the slopes or a skating rink. Winter and skiing or ice skating are a perfect match. Spend the first day of the year testing out fresh powder, practicing double axels or sipping hot cocoa in the ski lodge.

• Visit a theme park. Some theme parks are still open after hosting holiday-centric special events. Crowds may be small on New Year’s Day, ensuring ride enthusiasts they can ride their favorite coasters multiple times.

Spending time outdoors is a fresh way to enjoy the start of a new year.

Winter is an especially popular time to utilize a slow cooker, which are widely associated with hot and hearty meals. Such is the case with

this Lines+Angles recipe for “Beef Stew,” which makes a great dinner on busy, cold nights.

Beef Stew Makes 6 servings 2 pounds boneless stew beef 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, peeled and diced 1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely chopped

3 carrots, peeled, trimmed and thickly sliced 3 ribs of celery, rinsed, trimmed and diced 6 medium new or red bliss potatoes, rinsed and quartered 2 bay leaves 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1⁄2 cup red wine 2 cups vegetable or beef broth 1. Rinse the beef under cold running water and pat completely dry with paper towels.

3. Heat the oil in a heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the flour-coated beef and brown on all sides.

4. Place browned beef in the crock pot. Add onions, garlic, carrots, celery, potatoes, bay leaves, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, wine, and broth.

5. Cover and cook for 1 hour on high and reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 6 hours, or until meat is tender and vegetables are cooked through.

6. Remove bay leaves and discard. Ladle stew into individual serving bowls and serve.

Note: Cooking time may vary depending on age and size of the slow cooker.

Screen usage is a fact of modern life, and it’s an issue parents find themselves navigating on a daily basis. Though even especially young children use devices like tablets, the desire for screens may grow considerably once kids enter elementary school. Many schools now utilize tablets and laptops in the classroom. While studies have found screens can foster cognitive development in young children, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry urges parents of school-aged children to limit activities that include screens. Excessive screen use can lead to a host of negative outcomes, including sleep disturbances, poor academic performance, obesity, and poor self-image and body issues, among other problems. The AACAP does not offer specific recommendations for school-aged kids regarding daily screen usage, but the organization notes children age five and younger should be limited to no more than one hour per day. A reasonable increase on that recommendation may not adversely affect schoolaged kids, though parents are advised to encourage healthy screen habits and turn screens off 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.

But no games are bigger than those that take place once the calendar turns to a new year. That’s when the postseason begins in both college and professional football.

Game watches with fellow fans, family and friends are a great way to make playoff football even more enjoyable.

With so many big games on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are

a great match. Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. As this year’s playoffs kick off, football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes. com.

Nachos: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 110-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed 4 ounces tortilla chips, or as needed Toppings (optional): 1⁄2 cup sour cream (optional) 1⁄2 cup salsa (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced black ol-

ives (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional) 1⁄4 cup green onion For taco seasoning: Stir paprika, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, chili powder, oregano, and salt together in a small bowl; set aside.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more.

Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared

taco seasoning mix.

Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes.

To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese.

Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer.

Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.
