Foods that will push you past the post-lunch slump

Lunch is a welcome respite in the middle of the day. Lunch is coveted because it provides a break from work and a chance to sit down and refuel the body until dinnertime.

Feelings of fatigue after eating a “hearty” lunch are not uncommon. Kim Yawitz, LD, a registered dietitian/nutritionist in Missouri, says it’s natural to get a little tired in the afternoon due to circadian rhythms and the release of melatonin between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. But choosing the wrong foods at lunchtime may exacerbate afternoon fatigue, compromise an individual’s ability to concentrate and even result in hunger pangs. According to nutrition experts, certain food combinations at lunch can satisfy cravings and keep anyone energized through the commute home.

• Grain bowls: Complex carbohydrates tend to be high in energizing B vitamins and whole grains will keep you feeling fuller longer due to their high fiber content. Look for complex, protein-rich grains, such

as quinoa, farro or brown rice. Balance the grain with plenty of vegetables.

• Salads with nuts: Salads are a go-to healthy lunch provided they’re not covered with fatty dressings or cheeses. Add chopped nuts to salads for added texture, protein and nutrition to fill you up and provide energy.

• Smoothies: Smoothies aren’t just breakfast fare. They’re delicious and nutritious any time of the day. You can add high-protein items, including plantbased protein powders or ground chickpeas and kale, to smoothies for an additional energy boost.

• Crackers and hummus: Purchase whole-grain crackers or ones made from almond flour for added nutrition and pair them with a healthy hummus dip. Hummus usually is made with chickpeas, garlic, tahini (ground sesame seed paste), and olive oil. It provides healthy protein and fat sources to keep you satiated.

• Overnight oats: Create a lunchtime or snack parfait using an overnight oats recipe. According to the Food Network, overnight oats are made by mixing old fashioned oats, milk (dairy or nut milk), yogurt, and other add-ins and letting the ingredients sit and thicken for at least five hours or even overnight. Change the flavor profile by experimenting with nuts (or nut butters), fruits and spices. This nutrientdense meal will provide plenty of energy without

bogging you down.

When dining out for lunch, fill up on vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, such as a quality white fish like wild cod. Starchy, cheesy and fast foods can contribute to fatigue that compromises afternoon productivity.

Cottage pie is a meal traditionally served in areas of Great Britain and Ireland. The name is sometimes used interchangeably with shepherd’s pie, but that’s a mistake. While shepherd’s pie uses lamb in the recipe, cottage pie contains beef. Cottage pie features a layer of meat and vegetables topped with potatoes. Some people opt for a mashed potato topping, others arrange thin slices of potatoes to look like “shingles” on the cottage. This recipe for “Cottage Pies” from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done” (Time Home Entertainment) from the editors of Real Simple prepares the pies into individual servings. They can be prepared up to two days in advance and then baked straight from the refrigerator as needed.

Cottage Pies

Serves 4

11⁄2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes (about 3), peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces Kosher salt and black pepper

1⁄2 cup whole milk

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 pound ground beef

1⁄3 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

11⁄2 cups frozen peas and carrots

Heat oven to 425 F. Place the potatoes in a large pot and add enough cold water to cover. Bring to a boil and add 2 teaspoons salt. Reduce heat and simmer until just tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk, butter, and 1⁄4 teaspoon each salt and pepper and mash to the desired consistency.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink, 5 to 6 minutes. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, 1⁄2 teaspoon salt, and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper. Fold in the peas and carrots. Transfer the beef mixture to 4 individual baking dishes and top with the mashed potatoes. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes.

7 fitness resolutions that are easy to keep

Resolutions to get in shape, exercise more and eat healthier foods are popular each January. Optimism reigns when making resolutions, but for many, the difficulty lies in keeping them. Individuals looking to get healthier in the year ahead can try these strategies to stay the course.

• Wake up earlier. Waking up a half hour earlier each day can have a substantial impact. That small amount of extra time can be devoted to meditation, deep breathing exercises or even some yoga stretches.

• Move around more frequently. Many people with office jobs spend hours sitting in front of computers. A sedentary lifestyle can have an adverse effect on overall health. Set a timer or use a reminder on a fitness tracker to remind you to get up and move around for a little bit every hour.

• Eat more vegetables. Vague goals like “eating better” are difficult to maintain because there is no specific goal to achieve. Rather, a resolution like eating a fruit or vegetable each day at every meal is something measurable. Vegetables can be hidden in favorite foods, such as desserts. Swap pasta noodles for spiralized zucchini as another easy fix.

• Stand straighter. Posture tends to decline with age, advises AARP. This can cause the spine to lose flexibility. Stretches to maintain posture can help anyone stand straighter and improve long-term health.

• Add “bursts” to your walk. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic tout the benefits of interval training. While highimpact workouts may not be appropriate for everyone, adding little speed bursts to a daily walk can provide significant health benefits. Aim for 30 to 60 seconds of rapid walking at regular intervals to shake up the workout.

• Drink more water. Increasing water intake can help you feel fuller, thus reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Gradually increase your water intake by adding a few ounces each day until drinking water becomes rote.

Winter is widely known as the coldest time of the year in most locales, but that’s not the only thing that makes the season unique. Explore these other cold, hard facts about wintertime.

• The Earth actually is closest to the sun in December, even though the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. The amount of daylight hours has to do with the tilt of the Earth on its axis rather than its proximity to the sun.

• The Southern Hemisphere, due to having less land mass and a more maritime climate, tends to have milder winters than the Northern Hemisphere.

• According to Smithsonian, ancient Romans used daylight and darkness to determine the time. As a result, an hour in ancient Rome lasted 45 minutes in the winter and 75 minutes in the summer.

• Two islands, called Big Diomede and Little Diomede, are located in the Bering Strait, which divides Alaska from Russia. Big Diomede is owned by Russia, while Little Diomede is owned by the United States. • Snow is common in many areas during the winter. The highest snowfall ever recorded in a one-year period in the U.S. occurred at Mount Rainier, in Washington.

Between February 19, 1971, and February 18, 1972, 31.1 meters (1,224

inches) of snow fell.

• Russia remains the coldest country in the world during the winter. Canada and Mongolia are not too far behind.

• The largest snowflake ever recorded measured 15 inches wide. It was found in Fort Keogh, Montana.

• A city in Sweden uses light therapy in bus stops to help combat seasonal affective disorder during winter, when 19 hours of darkness are common.

• Unlike hurricanes and other summer storms, winter storms are not named by the National Weather Service.

• Snowflakes are translucent, not white.

• No country in the Southern Hemisphere has hosted or applied to host the Winter Olympics.

• Most weather-related crashes in the U.S. happen on wet pavement during rainfall rather than during snow or sleet, ac-
