SHERIDAN HOUSE COUNSELING SERVICES

Having experienced my parents’ divorce at the age of 12, and subsequently living in an abusive situation with one of my parents, I sought a way to escape the pain at a very young age --- right into the arms of a boyfriend.

After a few years I became pregnant, but he was not ready to be a dad. I chose my child and was on my own, or so I thought! God was lovingly pursuing me.

When Justin was 6, we started counseling at Sheridan House with a wonderful counselor named Craig Handwerker. He was able to connect with Justin on levels I couldn’t. He helped me understand that Justin needed structure, consistency, and showed me how to apply Biblical principles to parenting. I read Dr. Barnes’ books, attended classes at Sheridan House and applied many of the principles. I would love to say everything was perfect after that, but the truth is, parenting is hard work! Yet, I began to notice a marked difference in both of our lives as a result of applying these principles.

What’s The “IT”?

The theme for this year’s Family Advocates has been “It Works.” When you read this month’s story about Tina you discover the “Secret Behind The It”.

An awesome single mom named Tina wanted to do the best she possibly could as a parent to her son. To do this she sought out some parenting education. In her search a friend told her about a parenting seminar that Sheridan House offers. During that class she heard about the foundational ingredient for every parent: a faith in Christ.

Tina went from that seminar directly to Sheridan House. She didn’t stop at getting just a little information. She wanted all she could get. Sheridan House continued helping her and pointed her toward a church. In the process Tina and her son came to put their faith in Christ.

Today, Tina is one of the lead volunteers at Sheridan House. She has gone full circle, from having a need to meeting needs.

God used a need in Tina’s life to get her to a point where He changed her whole life and now she is helping to change other lives.

It started with a need and ended with success. Yes, God used Sheridan House, but the obvious “It” in the phrase “It Works,” in every Sheridan House story, is God. A faith in Christ!

Sheridan House is here to meet people at their point of need, help them with that need, and then point them to Christ. We are supplying answers for today’s family, but God is the One changing lives.

Tina, a single mom, was looking for answers... and attended a Sheridan House Parenting Seminar that pointed her to a relationship with Christ.

She then took the next steps and received counseling at Sheridan House for her son. She dove in and attended classes for single moms, read Dr. Barnes’ books and applied the Biblical principles to her life. Along the journey, her son Justin also accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Today, Tina is giving back. She is now the Financial Administrator at Parkridge Baptist Church and one of Sheridan House’s very best and most beloved volunteers. It is so rewarding to see a single mom coming back to Sheridan House to give back… by serving single moms in need.
