A Note From Bob This month’s story of Mike gives us all an excellent example of why Sheridan House is here. There are many angry kids out there. Angry with their dad for not being there. Angry with their moms because they are there. Some are just angry with life. Quite often some of these kids are angry at God.

We do that initially by placing the child in one of our homes so they can observe a mom and a dad who love each other and in turn pass their love onto the child. They point the child to Christ on a daily basis. Each child is given the opportunity to begin a personal relationship with their Heavenly Father.

I myself spent part of my childhood in a single parent home. I know that anger well. I also experienced relief from that anger when I was introduced to Christ. That’s what we are here to do.

If we took votes or wagers this would have been a kid voted least likely to succeed or rather most likely to get dismissed from our residential program.

Mike Scott came to live at Sheridan House for boys in 2009.

He was by all definitions an angry young man… he missed his dad who left him and his brother years ago and he “hated” his mother for putting him in Sheridan House. He idealized the parent who left him and resented the one loving him.

His explosive and volatile behavior piled up the work hours [consequences] which he refused to do. While at Sheridan House he was getting into trouble at school, deliberately continued

breaking rules, sneaking things into the homes and being disruptive to the other kids – especially at bed time. This went on for months.

Then Mike had an encounter. During the summer of 2010 he met Jesus. Everything changed… his entire outlook changed about his mother, life, school and Sheridan House.

School became important. Grades shot up.

Mike shifted from being a disrespectful boy to a positive leader in the house. He was now respectful to all of the adults in his life and his chores and work hours were done with excellence. All of us were stunned by his vast improvements. In the fall of 2010, Mike enthusiastically graduated from the program.

He idealized the parent who left him and resented the one loving him.

Today, Mike is the MVP on his varsity football team and a straight “A” student on the honors list with a 3.8 GPA. He found his real Father and is a changed life.

Mike’s mother attended the Sheridan House Family Values 5K this past February. She let us know how well he is doing at home, school and on his new job

at an ice cream shop. His former house parents Steve and Teri Griffith visited with him at his job for lunch. They were welcomed with a huge smile and hugs all around. Mike began to reminisce and express his “love for Sheridan House” and how much he missed it.

A few weeks later his mother called Teri with the news that Mike’s dad called him to apologize for not being there when he was growing up.

We are convinced none of that would have happened without Jesus.

Jesus used Sheridan House to reach out to Mike.
